In den frühen 80er Jahren schuf Sam Francis eine Folge
von Material Collagen von großem künstlerischen Reiz.
Nachdem er sich bereits seit Anfang der 70er Jahre mit
Monotypien befasst und die Herstellungstechnik stetig
weiterentwickelt hatte, begann er dann Holz statt Glasoder Kupferplatten als Träger zu verwenden. Sein
spezielles Interesse galt dabei einerseits der Ausweitung
der Malfläche in das Dreidimensionale als auch der
Wirkung der Farbe auf dem gemaserten Holz: Sowohl der
auf der Oberfläche haftenden Farbpigmente selbst als
auch der in das Holz einziehenden Ölfarbe.
Bezeichnenderweise wollte sich Sam Francis zu seinen
Lebzeiten von diesen Objekten nicht trennen. "Nicht diese,
die behalte ich selbst" sagte der Künstler stets auf
Anfragen. Erst jetzt kamen die Werke zur Verfügung,
wobei eines direkt in das J. Paul Getty Museum ging.
Wir freuen uns, 11 dieser außergewöhnlichen Material
Collagen in unserer Galerie vom 24. April bis

During the early eighties Sam Francis created a series of
material collages of great artistic charm. His use of the
monotype technique had started as far as back as the
early seventies and had since then undergone continuous
further development. He now began to use wood instead
of glass or copper plates as a support and was
particularly interested in an expansion of the surface to
include a third dimension as well as in the effect of the
paint on the wood grain: this concerned both the pigments
themselves as they adhered to the surface and the oil paint
permeating into the wood.
Interestingly enough, Sam Francis never wanted to part
with these works during his lifetime. Whenever a request
was made, he said, “Not those, I will keep them myself.”
His material collages have therefore become available
only recently, with one of them going directly to the J. Paul
Getty Museum. We are now pleased to present 11 of
these extraordinary works at our gallery from April 24 to
May 22, 2004.
