I would like to express my greatest appreciation to all the members of the Arizona Swiss Society for your support of my educational and photographic endeavors while I attend school here at Daytona State College. I wish I

I would also like to thank everyone on the scholarship committee and all those that make this scholarship possible every year. I have the fondest memories of the
Swiss Society, all of the wonderful picnics and playing Jazz have been some of my most cherished memories as

Andre Cuenoud
It truly came as a shock when we heard that Andre Cuenoud had a
stroke and was in the hospital. A recent visit showed what a wonderful
attitude Andre displayed. He is recuperating wonderfully and is getting
lots of therapy. Please mail cards to his home address. It was great seeing Andre at the recent Christmas party.

It is with great sadness that we have to inform you that Ruedi
Strasser has passed away a few weeks ago. Our prayers are

Today I had a great time at our wonderful Swiss club Christmas party. At my table we were wondering why
Charles Choffat, a long time member and card player (Jasser), didn’t come to the party. On the way home I decided to check up on him atthis home. He was home alone with his cute little kitten as the sole companion.
Charles can’t walk well and can’t drive, and since he didn’t get many Christmas cards last year, he thinks this year
he’ll get even less. Being a moldy oldy myself I feel sorry for our friend and I wonder if some of you would be so
kind and send him cards and tht ay he won’t feel so forgotten.

Do you know A Bell for Ursli (Schellen-Ursli? It is a Swiss children's book from the Engadin written by
Selina Chönz. The beautiful pictures are done by artist Alois Carigiet.
Ursli lives on a small farm in the Engadin. He has many chores to do. Do you have chores? When Ursli has
finished his chores he runs outside and plays with the other boys from the village. In winter the cows and
goats stay in the valley in their barns, but when spring comes they will go up to the mountain meadows.
Each animal carries a bell around its neck. Before the cows and sheep are herded to the meadows something important is happening, it is the parade of boys who carry the bells.

Claude Burgin, Biography

I was born on June 7th, 1966 in Zurich, Switzerland. I have an older brother and two younger sisters. My dad was working for a
construction company as a supervisor, and my mom was working part-time as a sales clerk. We lived in a two bedroom apartment in Oberengstringen, a suburb of Zurich, for the first six years. Then my parents purchased some real estate and built a
house in Daenikon ZH, located in the Furttal. It was like paradise to me, the backyard was the forest, which went on for miles and
miles. Since my town was very small, I had to ride my bicycle to Otelfingen to attend the Sekundarschule.
While growing up, my brother and I spent many Saturdays working for my dad, who in the meantime had started his own landscaping business.
During my last year of school, I successfully applied for an apprenticeship position with Swissair. In 1982 I started a four year
apprenticeship in Zurich Airport (Kloten).
I graduated in 1986 with a Machinist/Mechanic degree from Swissair. A few months later I reported to basic training in Isone TI
as a Grenadier. Being over 6 ft tall I was unable to get through unnoticed by my superiors.. I returned in 1987 for the
Unteroffiziersschule and earned my sergeant rank.
I left Swissair and started working for a construction company as a mechanic. Two years later I needed a new challenge and
started working for Contraves AG in the MR&D department as a composite technician.
My girlfriend, who was a travel agent, convinced me to travel to Australia with her and visit a foreign language college in Perth.
For three months we attended college and then we traveled across Australia for another three. Shortly after my return I applied
for a job as a computer technician at ICL. One year later I traveled to the USA together with my best friend for 6 months. During
this trip we visited Phoenix AZ, where I met LuAnne, my future wife. We stayed in touch after I returned home. A few months later
I submitted my resume to Sun Trek, a tour operator in the US. I got hired as a camping tour guide. In April of 1993 I returned to
the US where I worked for two seasons as a tour guide. I loved coming to Phoenix in the winter and enjoy the outdoors with my
girlfriend LuAnne. As my stay was limited in the US, I returned home during Christmas. There I worked as a mechanic in a salad
factory (Gastro Star) for a few months. In February 1995, LuAnne came to visit and we got married. Two months later I moved to
Phoenix AZ. First I worked part-time as a janitor at the condominium complex where we lived. The same year we moved into our
first house in Chandler. In 1996 I went back to school at Chandler Gilbert community college. While attending school, I worked
part time at Chandler Airport. In 1997 I submitted a resume to McDonnell Douglas in Mesa and started a job as an aircraft mechanic on the Apache helicopter production line.
The same year our son Cameron was born. Then finally a dream came through, I earned my private pilot’s license. One of my
hobbies is building and flying experimental airplanes. In 2002, our daughter Chelsea was born. Today I still work at the same
place, now the Boeing Company, although I traded my assembly line job for an office position.

Zuercher Bahnhofstrasse wird trendy.

Uhrenlaeden und ein paar Edel Hotels liessen nicht gerade Stimmung aufkommen.
Doch jetzt wird es im Herzen der Schweizer Metropole lebhafter. Allein in den vergangenen Monaten haben dort zwei Clubs aufgemacht; insgesamt sind jetzt vier angesagte
Locations. Dazu kommt das Restaurant Baerengasse, das Multikuenstler und Unternehmer Dieter Meier (Yello) sein eigen nennt.
Es liegt im Lichthof der Grossbank Credit Suisse und erfreute gerade US-Prominenz
beim Zuerich Film Festival. Meier zuechtet ueberigens seine eigene Rinder in
Suedamerika.
When she blows the Alphorn, it’s not all Mountain Music

The alphorn, a 12 foot long wooden folk instrument played by Swiss shepherds to communicate
across mountain valleys, hasn’t exactly been the inspiration for many rock stars.
Never mind its unwieldy size. Would-be players are also turned off by its limited tonal range and the
traditional tunes evoking images of misty Alpine meadows. And then there’s the outfit. The alphorn
costume is typically a black felt hat, short sleeved black velvet jacket with silver buttons and a crisp
white shirt.
Enter Eliana Burki, a petite 25 year old jazz musician with a pierced nose from Solothurn, Switzerland. She performs in short skirts and torn jeans, and likes to play funky jazz tunes on her collapsible
carbon-fiber alphorn. “People thought I was a bit weird at first but it’s getting more accepted now,”
she says in her apartment in Berne, before tearing off a riff, skipping from low to high notes, blending
in trills and low rumbles.
But to the purists, carbon isn’t cool, “I can’t see us allowing carbon alphorns in the competition.” Mr.
Kolby said on the sidelines of the Swiss Federal Yodeling festival in Lucerne this summer, where he
was on the panel of judges.
There are other, more practical reasons to want to keep the alphorn in the hills, chief among them:
The thing is loud, really loud. Because it was originally as a tool to help farmers communicate across
remote valleys, sounds can carry up to 25 miles, if the air is still. “ Playing deep sounds for half an
hour is a really therapeutic experience for me,” says Ms. Burki, but “you have to have tolerant
neighbors if you want to practice indoors.”

The Collapse of the Old Confederation in 1798 and the Long March to
the New Federal State of 1848
The Confederates remained neutral during the War of the First Coalition against revolutionary France. But once Napoleon Bonaparte had established French power in northern Italy
the military pressure Switzerland increased. Its alpine passes were of strategic importance for
the French army, since they commanded the direct route from Paris to Milan. French revolutionary troops marched into the Bernese Vaud on 28 January 1798. The Diet was unable to react
decisively to the French invasion. Berne alone withstood the French army, but its forces were
defeated at the battle of Grauholz and on 5 March 1798 the victors entered the city.
A long and tortuous path led to the foundation of the Swiss Federal state in 1848. The
events of 1798 ushered in a 50-year-long political crisis, during which the conservative and progressive forces more than once resorted to violence in attempting to resolve their disputes.
The thirteen old cantons were joined by six new ones, the former subject territories of
Aargau, Thurgau, Ticino and Vaud and the former Allied Cantons of Sankt Gallen and
Graubünden.
After Napoleon's defeat the Congress of Vienna (1815) restored the old neutral league
of sovereign states. Three new cantons were added: Geneva, Valais, and the Prussian Neuchâtel. The diplomats in Vienna rewarded the Jura to Berne as compensation for the latter's loss of
former subject areas in Aargau and Vaud.
The Paris revolution of 1830 brought about a change in Switzerland, too. A strong liberal movement began to develop and in a number of cantons the aristocrats were divested of
power.
The old order found its defenders above all in the Catholic cantons of central Switzerland, and they united their forces in a military defense pact, known as the Sonderbund.
Matters came to a head in 1845 against the background of a severe economic crisis.
Switzerland's last famine was the result of the terrible potato blight which struck all of Europe.
The rise in prices caused a depression in the rural textile industry. After a brief campaign Federal troops occupied Lucerne (1847).
The new Federal Constitution guaranteed a whole range of civic liberties, such as the
right to reside wherever one wished, freedom of association, and equality before the law. It also
heeded the interests of the vanquished minority by making far-reaching provisions to maintain
cantonal sovereignty. The Swiss Federal state of 1848 marked the end of 18 years of bitter conflict. By 1850 the Confederation was recognized as the most heavily industrialized country in
Europe after Great Britain. But Swiss industry was of the cottage type and had a peasant background.

86. Auslandschweizer-Kongress am 23. August 2008 in Freiburg
Am Freitag, 22. August 2008 wurde in Freiburg der 86. AuslandschweizerKongress eröffnet. Traditionsgemäss startete der
Kongress mit der Sitzung des Auslandschweizerrats
(ASR).
Dieses «Parlament der Fünften Schweiz» wahrt die
Interessen der rund 670'000 im Ausland lebenden
Schweizerinnen und Schweizer und ist auch deren
Sprachrohr. Im Zentrum der Debatte stand die Zukunft der «Schweizer Revue», der Zeitschrift für Auslandschweizerinnen und
Auslandschweizer, deren Budget das EDA um 500'000 CHF kürzen will. Ein
weiteres wichtiges Thema war zudem die Einführung des E-Voting für die
Auslandschweizerinnen und Auslandschweizer, das der ASR so rasch wie
möglich zur Verfügung haben will.

Eine Schweiz ohne Grenzen?
86. Auslandschweizer-Kongress ? Freiburg, 23. August 2008
Jedes Jahr treffen sich die Auslandschweizer im August während dreier Tage zu
ihrem Kongress ? 2008 fand er in Freiburg statt.
Mehr als 400 im Ausland lebende Schweizerinnen
und Schweizer nahmen an der 86. Ausgabe teil. Das
Thema war die Personenfreizügigkeit. Grenzen
überschreiten, als Nichteinheimische im Ausland
leben. Die Auslandschweizer kennen viele der themenspezifischen Aspekte aus eigener Erfahrung.
Angesichts der Bedeutung der anstehenden Abstimmung über die Personenfreizügigkeit lag es nahe, unseren Landsleuten im Ausland das Wort zu
erteilen. Der Samstag versprach sehr interessant zu werden und wurde schliesslich zu einem spannenden und emotionalen Erlebnis.
Ausbildung junger Auslandschweizerinnen und Auslandschweizer in der Schweiz
Zahlreiche junge Auslandschweizerinnen und Auslandschweizer entscheiden sich jedes Jahr dafür, eine Ausbildung in ihrem Ursprungsland zu machen. Die Integration in das Schweizer Bildungssystem ist für sie
nicht immer einfach; sei es weil ihre Sprachkenntnisse ungenügend sind, weil ihre Vorbildung nicht anerkannt wird oder weil sie die zahlreichen Ausbildungsmöglichkeiten nicht kennen. Der Verein zur Förderung
der Ausbildung junger Auslandschweizerinnen und Auslandschweizer (AJAS) unterstützt und berät junge
Auslandschweizerinnen und Auslandschweizer bei Fragen rund um eine Ausbildung in der Schweiz und
kann auf deren besondere Situation eingehen.
Neubestellung des ASR fuer die Amtsperiode 2009-2013
Der Auslandschweizerrat (ASR) ist das repräsentative Organ der Auslandschweizerinnen und Auslandschweizer. Er vertritt die Interessen aller ausgewanderten Schweizerinnen und Schweizer in den politischen
Kreisen der Schweiz. Der ASR spielt somit eine entscheidende Rolle für die Wahrung der Interessen der
Auslandschweizer. Die Delegierten des ASR werden für die Periode von 2009 bis 2013 neu gewählt. Ein internationaler Aufruf richtet sich daher an alle Auslandschweizerinnen und Auslandschweizer, die als Delegierte
im ASR Einsitz nehmen möchten. Dieser setzt sich aus Vertretern der Schweizergemeinschaften im Ausland
sowie aus Inlandschweizern zusammen. Als von den Behörden anerkanntes Sprachrohr der Auslandschweizerinnen und Auslandschweizer vertritt der ASR die Interessen unserer Landsleute im Ausland und nimmt zu
den politischen Fragen Stellung, die für diese von Belang sind. Er ist das «Auslandschweizer-Parlament», das
legislative Organ der Auslandschweizer-Organisation (ASO) und tritt zweimal jährlich in der Schweiz zusammen.

Eine Schweiz ohne Grenzen?

Die Schweiz hat den Beitritt zum Schengen-Raum am Freitag als historischen
Tag gefeiert. Justizministerin Eveline Widmer-Schlumpf sprach von einem
Gewinn fuer Sicherheit und Freiheit. Der Schweizer EU-Botschafter Michael
Reiterer sagte, die Schweiz habe eine wichtigen Schritt gemacht, um selbst gebaute Grenzen abzubauen.
Die Schweizer hatten 2005 fuer den Beitritt zur Schlengenzone gestimmt. Am
27. November dieses Jahres beschlossen die Inerminister der 27 EU-Staaten
dann die Aufnahme der Schweiz.

Der Luxus wächst in Shenzhen mit Riesenschritten
Interlaken in China ist eine Wundertüte im Grossformat
Auch wenn man bereits Bilder gesehen hat, Interlaken im OCT-East Resort bei Shenzhen ist irgendwie
unglaublich: Die Chinesen bauen seit gut vier Jahren eine neun Quadratkilometer grosse Landschaft
komplett in einen Erlebnispark um, Luxushotels und Luxusappartements inklusiv. Der erste Teil wurde
Das Hotelzimmer war verblüffend: eine weite Wohnlandschaft mit gepflegter Dusche, mit einem gut ausgerüsteten Schreibtisch, TV-Flachbildschirm über einer Stuckatur-Cheminée-Attrappe, zwischen dem fürstlichen Bett und dem Fenster ein leicht orientalisch angehauchter Arkadenbogen. Dahinter, mit Aussicht
auf den See, eine runde Luxus-Badewanne, eine Sitzgruppe mit Salontisch und eine Recamière. Ein
Riesenstrauss zartgelber Löwenmäulchen, ein Korb mit auserlesenen Früchten, eine zierliche Schachtel
mit drei Pralinés. Das Interlaken Hotel bei Shenzhen lässt keine Wünsche offen. Ausser vielleicht, wenn
die raffinierte Elektronik so raffiniert ist, dass es nicht gelingt, die stilvolle Nachttischlampe ganz zum
Verlöschen zu bringen.
Unglaubliches Tempo
Vor wenigen Jahren war die Landschaft, in der das Hotel liegt, noch Landwirtschaftsland. Dann kam die
OCT-Gruppe, die dem Staat gehört und deren Kerngeschäft der Tourismus und Wohneigentum ist. OCT
ist aber auch im Elektronik-Business tätig. Die chinesische Zentralregierung verfolge – so steht es auf einer
entsprechenden Webseite – das Handeln von OCT in Südchina mit grossem Interesse und ermutigt die
Gruppe, sich weiter zu entwickeln. Die Bauern, die früher in den drei Gebirgstälern lebten, hatten die
Wahl, Gärtner zu werden oder wegzuziehen. Die Drei-Täler-Landschaft wird zu einem touristischen Natur
- und Erholungsparadies umfunktioniert. Im Visier der Erlebnis-Touristiker ist auch das nahe Hongkong.
Die Stadt Shenzhen selbst ist eine der am schnellsten wachsenden Städte Chinas und hat das höchste ProKopf-Einkommen des Landes.
Interlaken als Glücksfall
Interlaken steht schon. Eine Kopie von Interlaken, das weiss man seit dem Besuch einer Delegation im
Jahr 2007, ist es nicht. Zum einen ist Interlaken das Hotel mit riesigen Sälen mit viel Dekor, auch mit etwas eigenwilligen Interpretationen von Kronleuchtern. Es gibt eine Bar, die einer gotischen Kathedrale
nachempfunden ist, inklusive Bardamen in einer Art Nonnenlook. Unklar blieb, ob das Schiff im neu angelegten See eher das Piratenschiff von Peter Pan oder die Santa Maria von Kolumbus darstellt und ob es
auch fahren kann. Jedenfalls besteht im Hotel eine romantische Anlegestelle, ein bisschen wie IndoorVenedig. Neben dem Hotel steht Interlaken als Einkaufsstrasse und die Brücke Interlaken. Diese erinnert
irgendwie an die Kapellbrücke in Luzern. Die Häuser haben einen tirolerischen Schwarzwaldstil mit
einem Hauch Engadin. Wiederkehrend als Deko-Element sind zwei Statuen: Er ein Stehgeiger wie Johann
Strauss, sie eine grossbusige Muse. Auf einer Terrasse sind die beiden gemeinsam mit einer Kuh zu sehen;
da hat jemand in Interlaken, wo etliche Kunstkühe stehen, genau hingeschaut. Auf dem grossen Platz,
dort, wo das einem Dampfzug nachempfundene Bähnchen, mit dem man auf Resort-Sightseeingtour
fahren kann, im Bahnhof Interlaken ankommt, gibt es eine offene Konzerthalle. Mit einer Dachründe, fast
wie beim Kursaal Interlaken. Allerdings verrät die Schrift – Schwarzwald Dorfplatz – dass da andere
Dächer als Vorbild dienten. Ein anderes Gebäude hat vier Türmchen wie das Palace in Gstaad. Ein Konglomerat von «good old Europe», mit seinem Herzen, der Schweiz, und mit der Marke Interlaken als Aufhänger. Zwischen den Seen ist ein sehr glücklicher Name, denn Wasser bedeutet in China auch Glück. Die
Chinesen brauchen nicht mehr so weit zu reisen, um Europa zu entdecken. Und wenn Showtime ist, gibt
es schottische Dudelsack-Pfeifer zu hören. Britische Bärenfellmützen-Soldaten reiten hoch zu Pferd, und
eine königliche Hochzeitskutsche hat Plastikblumen in die Räder geflochten.

Die ganz grosse Show
Das ganze Resort ist noch eine Baustelle. Insbesondere der gigantische künstliche Wasserfall, stolz als die Nummer
eins der von Menschen geschaffenen Wasserfälle der Welt bezeichnet, ist erst halb fertig. Er wird 300 Meter lang
und 70 Meter hoch. Ein Staubbachfall mit vielen Klonen. Ein bisschen an den Mystery Park erinnert der Platz der
bemalten Felsen, der zum Wasserfall führt, und der ebenfalls im Bau ist. Felsblöcke verschiedener Herkunft sind mit
Höhlenzeichnungen oder Totems aus alten Kulturen der Welt bemalt. Weil es auf dem Platz so heiss wird, versprüht
eine Art Lampen kühlenden Nebel. Oben auf einem der Hügel drehen sich Windmühlen, denn OCT-East schreibt
sich Ökologie gross auf die Fahne. Ein Öko-Themenpark wird gebaut. Auf dem Programm der Delegation stand die
Tea Show Performance. Irgendwie tauchte ein Bild von einer knienden Frau in Landestracht auf, die den allgegenwärtigen Grüntee – die Teeblätter sind vor dem Trinken leise wegzupusten – in besonderer Weise kredenzt. Was
dann folgte, war ein Hammer. Ein riesiger Theaterraum mit einer grossen Bühne. Eine grosse Schar von Tänzerinnen
und Tänzern, zum Teil im klassischen Spitzentanz, und Zirkusakrobaten erzählten in gigantischen Bildern, unterstützt von Lichtshows und Projektionen, die Geschichte des Tees in China. Es ging im Sturm auf die Weltmeere, und
es kamen die Mönche mit ihren Kampfkünsten zum Einsatz
Die Freizeit– und Tourimusanlage dehnt sich aus so weit das Auge reicht.
Ein Sujet, das die meisten Delegationsteilnehmer fotographierten: Der Berner Baer
liegt auf dem Ruecken.
