in his newfound glory at a celebratory dinner with
friends and supporters at Zang Toi cafe in Pavilion
Kuala Lumpur. His Malaysian visit was a brief
one as he was and is currently busy preparing his
Spring/Summer 2014 collection, which he is plans
to showcase during the New York Fashion Week in
September.
Zang Toi is definitely a living proof of how one’s
dream can become a reality. Born in Kuala Krai,
Kelantan on June 11, 1961, he is the youngest
of a seven-sibling family. His parents were owners
of a grocery store in Kelantan and he spent his
secondary school years studying at the Sekolah
Menengah Sultan Abdul Samad in Petaling Jaya
contemplating his career options either as a painter,
interior designer or an architect before deciding to
venture into fashion designing. He left Malaysia at
the age of 18 and landed in New York a year later
where he attended Parsons School of Design and
graduated with a BFA in Fashion Design.
Upon graduation, he was personally trained under
Mary Jane Marcasiano and Ronaldus Shamask,
and five years later in 1989, he launched his
eponymous label with a modest collection of bright
sarongs, strong suits and regal dresses and opened
his own atelier. His uniquely eclectic colour sense
that brought the tropical colours of Asia on the
runway quickly captured the attention of the New
York fashion elite.
Zang Toi conferred the title ‘Datuk’ by Yang di-Pertuan Agong Tuanku Abdul Halim Mu’adzam Shah
M
alaysia’s most prolific fashion designer,
Zang Toi was conferred the title ‘Datuk’
on June 1 in conjunction with the birthday
of Yang di-Pertuan Agong Tuanku Abdul Halim
Mu’adzam Shah. This acknowledgement couldn’t
have come at a better time as the New York-based
designer celebrated his 52nd birthday on June 11,
two weeks after the ceremony was held in Kuala
Lumpur.
“I was thrilled! I was actually on my Spring 2014
Inspiration trip in Charleston when I received a
phone call from my mother. It was in the middle
of the night (due to the time difference), and I
thought something had happened to my dad. After
I learned that I would be bestowed the Datukship
in a few days, I immediately flew back to New
York and caught a flight the next day back to
Malaysia,” said Zang Toi on his first reaction
of discovering the news on his conferment in
conjunction with the birthday of the Malaysian
king.
Zang Toi, who joined international film actress
Datuk Seri Michelle Yeoh, conferred the title ‘Tan
Sri’, were among the prominent personalities to
receive honours awarded in conjunction with
the birthday of Yang di-Pertuan Agong Tuanku
Abdul Halim Mu’adzam Shah. He held a small
celebration at home with family members including
his 85-year-old mother and 87-year-old father on
the eve of the ceremony and he continued to bask
In 1991, he proudly won the Mouton-Cadet Young
Designers Award, which recognises top young US
designers of the year. Since his arrival in New York,
Zang Toi had been very lucky to have made waves
during the early stages in his career, attracting the
attention of people like Frank De Caro and the
United States Vogue editor-in-chief, Anna Wintour
as early as 1989 when he opened his own atelier.
In 1991, he was described as “the next big thing”
and he has lived up to that expectation and beyond
until today.
His first ever honour received in his homeland
took place on March 30, 1997, as the Sultan
of Kelantan bestowed him with the state award,
Bentara Seri Kelantan. And in October 2002, the
designer was recognised by the International Centre
of New York, an organisation dedicated to the
advancement of immigrants, for Toi’s achievements
and contributions. In his acceptance speech for
the award from the International Centre, Zang Toi
was quoted saying, “Lastly, to every immigrant who
came here to pursue the ‘American Dream’, always
dream big! If a small town Kelantanese boy from
Malaysia can make it here, you too, with hard
work, discipline and determination can also achieve
great success and happiness.”

COVER STORY
Vivid magazine named the award-winning designer as one of the top eight
most influential Chinese Americans in its June-July 2011 issue. Based on
the record set by his trunk shows, Zang Toi earned himself the name, ‘King
of the Trunk Shows’, as he would stash his clothes collection in a trunk and
whisk them from one runway show to the other. His fashionable goods can
be found at the Couture Department at Nordstrom, Sax Fifth Avenue and
Neeman Marcus. He has also had the privilege to dress up some of the A-list
stars and royalty including Sharon Stone, Eva Longoria, Meg Ryan, Princess
Haifa of Saudi Arabia and many more.
He opened his first boutique in Bukit Bintang Plaza back in 1995 and today
his fashionable goods are found at the Zang Toi Boutique in Lot 10. Zang
Toi’s West 57 St Cafe is tucked in one of the sections in Parkson’s department
store in Pavilion Kuala Lumpur and aside from serving local cuisine, the cafe
carries T-shirts with the hand-embroidered Zang Toi logo up for sale alongside
other accessories such as handcrafted sequined baskets and mirrors with the
signature Zang Toi crown on it. With such a reputation, the demand for Zang
Toi creations have increased over the years that prompted him to find new
outlets to reach out to his fans. Thanks to several licensing opportunities, he
has been able to grow his brand through licences with Zang Toi for Zoya nail
polish, Zang Toi for Amazing Cosmetics, Zang Toi jewellery by Amee Philips
and Zang Toi for Anew Legwear. The Zang Toi brand has also garnered
a large number of fans in the footwear scene as more than 20 department
stores promote his shoes under the label, Zang Toi, which is licensed to Larrie
Shoes of Malaysia. On top of his many licensing deals, he also started an
e-commerce site, ShopZangToi.com, where he can sell these products as well
as connect with his fans.
Despite being one of the busiest man in the fashion world, Zang Toi makes
time to contribute to the community’s well-being. The designer drew inspiration
after reading Lance Armstrong’s life story. He supported the cause and helped
to raise over US$700,000 in hopes to find a cure for cancer, which he
considers to be a worthy cause. He was recognised by the Lance Armstrong
Foundation (LIVESTRONG) with an award for being the top fundraiser in
2008/09.

Conversation with Datuk Zang Toi
COVER STORY
Zang Toi talks about the inspiration behind his latest
Fall collection, his favourite summer trend and more.
With receiving the honour of Datukship, is there anything else you would
like to achieve in your career?
This truly is the highlight of my career; and I want to continue to create
gorgeous designs to make my ladies feel and look beautiful.
What are some of the other highlights of your career so far?
Among some of the most memorable moments was when the late Farrah
Fawcett wore my navy gown with stars and stripes train to the Vanity Fair’s
Oscars after-party. She was the true epitome of old Hollywood glamour and
timeless beauty. It was a privilege to dress her, and most of all, to call her a
friend.
What is your advice to the up and coming designers?
The single most important ingredient to success is hard work.
It’s still summer time in America. What’s your favourite trend for the
season?
I love wearing luxurious white in the summer.
Where’s your favourite summer getaway?
I usually go to Paris in June to celebrate my birthday. Paris still remains one of
my favourite places in the world.
What was your main inspiration behind the Fall 2013 collection?
The collection is inspired by my recent trip to Saint Petersburg. The Peterhof
Palace is so grand and regal. The amber and mahogany reflect the colour
of the famed parquet floor in the Grand Ballroom; emethyst, emerald and
sapphire celebrate the regal splendour of Imperial Russia.
If you could collaborate with a designer or brand, who or what would it
be?
That would be Hermes as it is the most uber luxurious brand.
With Hari Raya Aidilfitri coming in August, what would be your favourite
style to celebrate the occasion?
Mini version of Kelantanese sarong ala Zang Toi.
From Russia With Love
Zang Toi introduced his Fall 2013 collection at the New York Fashion Week
in February 2013. His latest collection is what he calls a “modern take on
Imperial Russia,” with day and evening dresses perfectly suited for his beau
monde and a modern reformation of the historical opulent looks of Fabergé
Eggs and Peterhof Palace. To keep in line with the Russian theme, the show
opened with Sting’s Russians song and closed with Lara’s Theme from Dr.
Zhivago.
Zang Toi received a well-deserved standing ovation from the audience. His
latest collection had everyone raving including Miss Teen USA, Logan who
was quoted as saying, “I love it. Literally, I’m obsessed. All of the black and
gold dresses, literally I want every single piece of this collection.”
Zang Toi’s exclusive boutiques
Zang Toi’s first Malaysian boutique opened its doors in Bukit Bintang Plaza
almost twenty years ago in 1995. Two years later, the Zang Toi boutique
in the chic vicinity of Lot 10 was introduced to his Malaysian fans and
customers. The boutique in Lot 10 is the biggest and is the main outlet where
his amazing creations can be found in Kuala Lumpur. In 2002, the Coral
Gable Nordstrom boutique was the first of a series of Zang Toi Boutiques
across the U.S. Today, his clothes are sold through the Couture Department
at Nordstrom, Sax Fifth Avenue and Neeman Marcus and worn by many
celebrities.

the queen
Malaysia’s favourite songstress,
Datuk Sheila Majid chats with
KL Lifestyle on her latest projects.
By Marlina Azmi
With a successful career of 28 years in the music scene, Datuk Sheila
Majid doesn’t need much introduction. Her established music career,
which produced numerous hit albums, memorable live concerts and
many key awards has left quite an impression on her legion of fans.
Sheila has been a bit quiet for the past few years but 2013 looks very
bright and busy for our favourite jazz queen. We were indeed very
privileged to have had the opportunity to catch up on what’s been going
on with her life this year.
You’ve been quite the busy lady so far, what have you been up to in
the whole month of June?
In this one week in June, I had a show on Monday night, a birthday
party I performed at on Tuesday, a show on Friday and I had another this
morning, a photo shoot that I’m running off to in the evening, and now
taking a moment to chat with you.
That sounds like a very busy week for you. How has 2013 been
treating you so far?
Oh my god, I’ve been quite busy, Alhamdulillah and I’m not
complaining. I think its better to be busy than not. The past six months
have gone by really fast!
What have you been working on exactly?
Well, I’m launching my jewellery collection and also currently working on
a new album but that won’t be happening any time this year though. It
will probably be done some time next year.
I saw a picture of you and the Dangerdisko boys in a studio on
Facebook. What are you guys up to?
I was at the studio working on a club mix with them. So basically, I’ve
done my part of the production by providing Farez and Shah with what
16 l KL LIFESTYLE
they need to work on my song and I’m quite excited to see what they
have for me. It should be ready pretty soon.
You seem very open-minded in working with different genres.
You’ve done some hip hop with Poetic Ammo before and now you’re
involved with the nu-disco scene. Do you listen to dance music by
choice?
Yes, I do! I do listen to songs that my children play but I still do have a
soft spot for the old school disco sounds and I’m a big fan of people
like Donna Summer and a lot of the 80’s sound. I would actually like to
collaborate with more of the younger artistes around right now where I
can still keep my signature sound but at the same time infuse some new
sounds to give it more edge. So that’s basically where I am heading with
this club mix with Dangerdisko; to make it more appealing to the youth.
Speaking of the youth, when you performed at Urbanscapes, you
kept teasing the crowd if they were old enough to know your
music but they obviously knew your songs by heart. How did it feel
knowing you have a fan base from multiple generations?
Yeah, I asked the crowd if they were born yet when my older productions
were released. It feels good to know that my music appeals to the
masses. I mean, music is universal and it crosses all boundaries. To me,
I don’t cater to a certain crowd. I hope that whatever I produce will
appeal to everybody, from all walks of life and age.
When I performed at Urbanscapes, I was flattered that they younger
generation were into my music despite the fact that some of my earlier
works were released in 1985 and some of them weren’t even born yet
but they could relate to it, liked it and sang along to it. That goes to
show that music is universal and it was surprising to hear them singing to
my music and that felt good. And that was when it occurred to me that
features
I have followers from the younger generation
and I must also cater to them. I always thought
my fans were 40 years old and above but I
was wrong.
Will you be performing in any big events
like that in the near future?
Right now there hasn’t been a request because
for shows like that, you usually have to be
invited but I am performing at a public show
in October, but I cannot reveal any information
on it now. I perform at a lot of private shows
these days, actually.
There are a lot of emerging talents out there.
Are there any plans on collaborating with
any of them?
There are so many artistes out there that are
very good, and I like working with the youth
simply for their enthusiasm and they have
great ideas but some need to be fine-tuned.
Right now, I’m slowly getting to know them
and basically for my upcoming album I’m
working with people like Najwa. I’m slowly
being introduced to the younger generation
like Dangerdisko so it’s a new scene for me
altogether.
Ramadan is upon us. What’s your usual
agenda during the whole month?
The month of Ramadan is usually when I take
a break but that’s what I keep saying every
year. Instead it’s also a very busy month for
me. I usually go for interviews, meetings and
basically prepare for what comes after Hari
Raya.
Do you have any special tradition you
practise during Hari Raya? Does your family
wear matching clothes on the first day of the
celebration?
Oh yes, we do! Not just my immediate family
but my siblings and their families too. Every
year, we wear one colour. It can be any
shade but the colour is usually similar. Like last
year, we all wore yellow and this year the
colour is blue; any shade of blue. And this
tradition is practised from my eldest sister’s
family to the young ones. We usually move in
one big group when we visit people’s houses.
Okay, one last question before we end this
interview. Can you give a shout out to your
fans and KL Lifestyle readers?
I just want to say thank you to all my fans for
putting me up here for the longest time. This
is my 28th year in the business and I think
without them I wouldn’t have been able to be
in the scene for so long, so I thank them for all
the support. Watch this space for updates as
I have my jewellery line coming up, the new
album that I’m working on and also that public
concert that I cannot reveal much of right now.
It will be announced really soon so keep a
look out on all the social network and news
sites for updates.

An insight
into MICCI
Stewart Forbes gives an extensive
description of the functions of MICCI.
By Marlina Azmi
S
tewart Forbes is the executive director of the Malaysian
International Chamber of Commerce & Industry (MICCI). A
shipbroker by profession, Stewart has had 46 years business
experience in Asia, of which 33 years experience have been spent in
Malaysia. His family of four generations has been working in Southeast
Asia since the 1900s, hence his fondness for the region apart from the
length of time he has been here.
“Because of my family’s connection with Asia, I left home once I finished
school to come back as I spent four to five years in the Far East when
I was a child and returned to Europe with my family. I returned here
when I was 21 and I wouldn’t have stayed if I didn’t like it here, I even
call Malaysia my ‘kampong’. I built a house in Perak and have a small
apartment here in Kuala Lumpur. This is home as far as I’m concerned. I
couldn’t bear the thought of facing European winters,” said Stewart on
his migration to Asia.
Stewart was involved in the development of container services for
British ship owners in the Far East during the late 1960s and early
1970s. He served as vice-chairman of the International Ship-owners
Association, Malaysia for six years and is a past chairman of the MICCI
Perak Branch. He is a graduate of the London Institute of Transport and
has been actively involved in the Malaysian International Chamber of
Commerce & Industry for over 26 years and has been its executive
director since 2000.
MICCI is the longest existing trade association in Malaysia, spanning
176 years of since it was formed in 1837. “If you think about the
membership and what we were originally back then, obviously the
business model in Malaysia was dominated by the big European trading
houses and banks. In fact, we still have about four to five members
who’ve been in the chambers for over 100 years,” said Stewart.
18 l KL LIFESTYLE
MICCI began its operations to look after the interest of the big European
companies. Over the years as Malaysia continues its economic
development first under the British, then after gaining independence
and striving as a developing nation it’s obvious that the pattern of
economy has changed. It has changed from an economy that was
largely dominated by foreign investors and large multinationals to an
economy today that’s grown much more domestically with large GLCs
(government-linked companies), large international domestically owned
companies and smaller SMEs (small medium enterprises) sprouting
actively.
“MICCI membership has changed significantly. We still have a large
component of large multi-national corporations that have been in
Malaysia for many years. Companies with strong foreign equity such as
HSBC, Nestle and new players like Tesco are some of our members.
These large companies with a strong foreign equity are a strong
representation within MICCI and increasingly our membership represents
Malaysian companies as well. We have large Malaysian GLCs like
Sime Darby and Guthrie, and we have smaller companies as well, who
are interested in doing business,” he explained.
One thing that sets MICCI apart from other similar organisations
in Malaysia is the fact that all their members have an interest in
international operations. It doesn’t necessarily mean they have foreign
equity. They may be exporters, they may be even interested in becoming
an exporter and global players but their interest is more than just to thrive
in the domestic economy. Companies, which fulfil these criteria are
qualified to join as members.
Today, MICCI services over 30 different nationalities in their chambers.
MICCI is in fact a Malaysian organisation and it is incorporated
here under the Companies Act, and is one of the founding members
of the National Chambers of Commerce and Industry of Malaysia.
features
MICCI meeting
all of the things that cover the economic climate here. We will try to
engage the government and the government ministries and agencies
with a view to improve the business climate so as to increase the total
economy for the whole of Malaysia,” explained Stewart.
MICCI works closely with government bodies
The NCCIM has only five members, namely the Malay Chamber of
Commerce, Associated Chinese Chambers of Commerce and Industry
of Malaysia, Malaysian Associated Indian Chambers of Commerce and
Industry, Malaysian International Chamber of Commerce and Industry
and Federation of Malaysian Manufacturers. Unlike the rest, MICCI is a
national organization with international outlook and that’s how it likes to
position itself.
Like most chambers of commerce, there are different layers of services
it provides. At a macro level, MICCI sees itself as having a strong
engagement policy with the government. It is the mediator for its
members as it constantly meets with government officials to improve the
overall business climate. “We debate with the government on corporate
tax rate, on the GST, simplifying the tax code, Competition Act 2010,
At a more direct level, because it is a member-based organisation,
MICCI doesn’t have shares or shareholders. In Stweart’s words, its
members ‘own’ it. “We are a membership organization and we
seek to improve the economic position of each and every one of our
members. In many cases, that’s because the member has a particular
problem. They may have licensing problem, problem with hiring foreign
labour and they may have environmental issues with the Department of
Environment. In many of those instances, we will meet with government
agencies on behalf of that specific member or perhaps a specific
business sector that’s having a particular problem to try improve
their position.” In addition, however, to enhance the value of their
membership, a full suite of supporting business services is provided to
members including export documentation services, online information
archives for exclusive access by members, electronic updates on new
and updated business conditions, business briefings and conferences,
professional secretariat services and business networking.
According to Stewart, 99% of the companies in Malaysia are SMEs.
MICCI plays a role in helping out independent business by offering
training and capacity building for them, providing access to their
members to mentoring programmes either through lecturing or mentoring
on site to show them what the next process is. “Not everyone is meant
to be just a roti canai seller. Sooner or later, he has to package his
roti canai and sell it to Singapore, Thailand and Japan. And that’s
part of the challenge in Malaysia, which is to take smaller-minded
entrepreneurial companies and tell them there’s a big world out there.
They may be reasonable-sized fish in a very small pond but if they
really want to grow, they have to be willing to be a small fish but in a
big pond and grow to be a big fish.”

so happens to be around in the area on a
weekend, she must go for her cuppa. And
because she goes there so often, the baristas
at Whisk can remember her orders although
they change seasonally.
From a humble cupcake maker, Zher went
into working behind the scenes at Media
Prima before landing on her dream through an
audition for a 15-minute variety show on local
TV channel, 8TV, four years ago. Zher later got
the part she auditioned for and became one of
the hosts for 8TV Quickie.
“I go through phases with everything, even
with my coffee. When I first came, I started off
with lattes before moving on to piccolo which
has lesser milk. Then I just wanted caffeine in
my blood and went for the espresso and now
hooked to the cold brew, which is slightly
stronger because they let it sit overnight,” she
explained.
As her career picked up, Zher started her role
as a radio DJ at Fly FM where she hosted the
Fly30, a three-hour radio programme counting
down 30 of the hottest hits in town.
According to Zher, Whisk takes pride in their
coffee and although they don’t roast their own
beans, they make sure the coffee they serve to
their customers are of good quality.
Today, Zher is part of the Pagi Rock Crew,
hosting the breakfast show from 6am to 10am
with her radio husband/partner, Guibo.
When it comes to cakes, she is a big fan of
the Granny’s Cake, which is a light, tiered
apple cake sandwiched with layers of cream
cheese icing and butterscotch and flecked
with tiny chips of apple. The Granny’s Cake
is home-made, unlike the cakes you get from
other cake places. For the sweet tooth, the
macarons at Whisk, Outpost are just divine
and definitely a must-try!
“When we just took over the morning slot,
Guibo and I used to go to Whisk, Outpost
every morning to get our coffee fix as we were
both new to the early mornings. After awhile,
he realised that he could survive without coffee
and stopped getting them, but he never stops
coming with me to buy my coffee. It’s a little
routine that we have. After the show, he will
accompany me on my coffee run,” said Zher.
Since coffee is a must-have for Zher to kick-start
her day, she has never missed getting her

Lounge area by the pool
Curious about the hype, I decided to check
out the scene myself. Arriving there early – I
was told that I could catch a beautiful sunset
– the crowd wasn’t what I would expect on a
Saturday night. We were sat upstairs, facing the
Kuala Lumpur cityscape.

o relax and unwind in buzzing Kuala
Lumpur now doesn’t require forking out a
hefty sum from your pocket at the best spas
in town, but you can eat, drink and be merry
while taking a dip at the spectacular bar-cumlounge, The Pool.
Indulged by a stylish and luxurious ambience,
we enjoyed a wide variety of well-conceived
Japanese and western dishes. We started off
with a serving of Potato Salad with mesclun
salad leaves topped with fresh salmon trout. As
the dish was placed on the table, I could smell
the exquisite aroma of the truffle oil which made
this one of my favourite potato salads thus far.
Located in Jalan Ampang, The Pool is the sister
bar to The Hill and is what some claims to quite The salad was then followed by a Caterpillar
Roll and Tom Yam Flavoured Spring Rolls, an all

finds in Kuala Lumpur’s bar scene.
With a capacity of 350 pax, The Pool has the
ideal layout for a variety of events, including
live performances, fashion shows, red carpet
arrivals, screenings and many more. Its
impressive line-up of events hosted since it
opened included the Mercedes-Benz STYLO
Model Search, Jose Cuervo grand launch and
Sugar Daddy’s feature debut album launch.
Deciding on the mains was really hard due
to the very extensive menu, so we decided to
order a few and share amongst us. We chose
the Peking Duck Wrap, Brontosaurus Beef Ribs,
which came in a dinosaur size (I kid you not!)
and The Green Monster which is a stack of juicy
lamb patty, fried onion rings and the mint-based
green goo. For the love of mint, The Green
Monster is definitely something you must try!
All these food would be so lonely without the
company of some flirtatious cocktails, and The
Pool definitely has some of the most original
cocktail selections. We recommend the
Watermelon Slush, Hawaii 5-0, Malacca-Loda
and the JTI Horeca Bartenders Contest winner,
Coconutz. The Pool also has more than 10
international beers on tap.
As soon as we had done with our mains, I
realised that the crowd had started to come in.
That was the cue for us to wrap up our meal
with a dessert and join the party downstairs,
by the pool. A big fan of deep-fried Mars Bars,
I decided to go for the Deep Fried Maltesers
that were served with vanilla ice-cream and
they tasted just as good.
Wrapping up our meal with a cocktail in hand,
we headed downstairs to chill over some
good music. At the end of the day, The Pool
is what I would recommend for lounging and
shaving the edge off a long day. And if you’re
in the mood to let loose, don’t forget to bring
your bikini or boardshort as the pool is always
ready to welcome you for a quick dive.

product launches and company events.
Located on Level 4, inside Parkson, Pavilion

spread of delicious goodies, customers will be
able to find T-shirts with the hand-embroidered
Zang Toi logo up for sale alongside other
accessories such as handcrafted sequinned
baskets and mirrors with the signature Zang Toi
crown on them.
The set menu is highly recommended for
customers seeking a complete meal, which
includes a drink, entrée and dessert. The drink
featured in all set menu options is the café’s
signature drink, which is the Zang Toi Punch
Tea. This drink packs a good punch as the
refreshing iced lemon tea is served with bits
of lemon and orange peel for that extra tangy
flavour complemented with lime and mint.
The set menus feature a variety of entrees that
range from local to intercontinental delicacies.
The Original Hainanese Chicken Chop is one
of the options offered in the menu. The tasty dish
comes from a very well-marinated chicken, a
tasty tomato-based sauce, the crispiness of the
chicken, the tenderness of the meat, and the
crunchy swirl fries. The café also offers a variety
of sandwiches like the Signature Chicken Mayo
Sandwich and the Jumbo Veal Sandwich with
Cheese.
The Jumbo Veal Sandwich with Cheese is an
oblong bun sandwich stuffed with a jumbo
sausage and mozzarella cheese topped with
home-made Thousand Island dressing. The
Signature Chicken Mayo Sandwich is filled
with shredded chicken lying on a bed of sliced
tomatoes, and a sprinkling of mozzarella
cheese. This tasty treat is best to devour while
it’s hot. For a more localised meal, the Nasi
Lemak Ayam Rendang spells out perfection. The
chicken is cooked to perfection as it is as tender
as can be and the ‘sambal’ suits those who are
into spicy food and those who are not.

The best way to end any meal at West 57th
Street Café is to indulge in its sinfully sumptuous
desserts. The Dark Chocolate Banana Cake,
dripping with rich dark chocolate sauce and
served with a scoop of vanilla ice-cream is a
definite must for any dessert fan. Unlike most

What’s great about Mulberry is that it caters
to everyone’s needs, whether it’s a romantic
candlelight dinner, a catch-up session with
friends at the cocktail bar or even a dinner party.
There are ample spots and spaces for these
occasions to take place. Customers who fancy a
bit of privacy are welcomed to book the private

seating 12 plus and a larger casual sitting room
featuring two dining tables, sofas and coffee

The modern rustic decor features a lot of earth

spicy for those who are too sensitive to spicy
food.
After being teased with these tasty appetizers,
we continued our adventure with some alltime favourite entrees. The first on the list was
the nice and crispy, Meat lover’s Pizza, a
scrumptious combination of salami, pepperoni,
turkey ham, artichokes, olives, jalapenos, basil,
and mozzarella and smoked Gouda cheese.
The combination of mozzarella and Gouda
was definitely the perfect touch! We were
then served the Marinara Linguini, which was
packed with amazing flavours especially in the
spicy tomato sauce. To complement the sauce,
chunky fish, prawns and squid were added into
the mix and topped off with basil leaves. Both
of these Italian dishes are perfect to share with a
group of friends.
After being served with quite a list of goodies,
we wondered what could top what we had and
our answer came in the form of a Meat Platter.
The Meat Platter consists of a kilogram of Black
Angus rump cap served with perfect side dishes
including baby French beans, roast potatoes,
”
rocket salad and pomme Dauphine potatoes.
Our meat was perfectly roasted the way we like
it, which is medium rare. The beef was nicely
red in the middle while the crust was blackened
and crisped to perfection. The way the meat
is cooked is totally up to the customers as you
can let them know whether you want it roasted
medium-well and even well done. This for us is
a great dish to be shared with a group of four
or five people.
Don’t worry if you don’t feel like dining in as the
bar itself has an extensive list of drinks for their
customers to indulge in. Our recommendation
is the Long Island Tea. Served in a traditional
Chinese teapot, make no mistake that it is
not a hot drink that you’ve been given. The
concoction of vodka, gin, rum, tequila, orange
liqueur, lemon and cake topped off with ice
cube is the right combination for customers who
want something strong in alcohol and delicious
in taste. Mulberry’s specialties don’t end with its
drinks and food, the dessert spread is also drool
worthy. For those with a sweet tooth, the Rich,
Sinful Chocolate Cake and Red Velvet will fulfil
all sorts of cravings with its generous serving
and flavours.

With 30 different types of pastries

find something that suits your taste
buds. My personal favourites are
the Firecracker Sausage and the
Chocolate Roll.
Sven Schneider, owner of Bread Basket
F
ollowing the success of its
Bangsar South outlet, Bread
Basket recently opened its
second outlet at Menara Tan &
Tan. Founded by German-born
Sven Schneider, Bread Basket was
established in 2010 by Schneider
and his German childhood friend,
Michael, who has been living in
Australia for over 15 years.
“The idea of opening a European
bakery came about when I first
visited Kuala Lumpur years ago.
I used to work for a German tour
operator in Maldives and although
it is a beautiful place, there wasn’t
much to do when you’ve lived there
for a long time. So when I was
free I would fly to Malaysia and
spend a few days in Kuala Lumpur.
Seeing that there wasn’t any
European bakery here at that time
sparked the idea of opening one,”
said Schneider.
Schneider then made a lifechanging call to his friend, told
him about his idea and the rest is
history. “The process of opening
the first outlet was very quick. As
soon as we made the decision
to execute the idea, we found a
spot in Bangsar South and the
outlet was open within three months
although we had to build the place
from scratch,” he recalled.
Unlike the outlet in Bangsar South,
the Bread Basket in Menara Tan
& Tan is a smaller version of the
former, but you can definitely expect
the warm gestures from its friendly
staff the moment you enter. Both
outlets carry the same concept in
their set-up, which was inspired
by the bakeries back home in
Germany. “There are a few things
that are important to us when setting
up the outlets. The counter display,
for example, is furnished with stones
and black granite and, a glass front
is installed to allow customers to see
and smell the bread, but not touch
them – for hygienic purpose.
“We want to make sure the quality
of our breads is maintained at the
highest possible level, so we would
prefer to not have the self-service
method that allows customers to
grab, touch and even put back the
breads on the shelves. This way,
the quality of our bread is assured
and we can also make sure that
communication exists between
our staff and our customers,” said
Schneider.
A thick spicy German sausage
wrapped in the perfect amount of
pastry, the Firecracker Sausage is
an interesting choice that goes well
on a Malaysian tasting palate. For
chocolate lovers, the Chocolate
Roll is definitely to-die-for as it is
filled with a thick layer of chocolate
paste, unlike the ones you find at
many other bakeries.
According to Schneider, although
only 30 types of pastries and
savouries as well as a large
selection of croissants and cakes
are sold at the store, they actually
have more than 50 types that they
circulate every few weeks to make
sure their customers are not bored
with the selections.
Apart from the already-impressive
pastries and savouries, Bread
Basket sells about 15 different
types of loafs, including the
Gluten-Free Quinoa Bread Loaf,
which has lower sugar content
and is good for people who are
diabetic. If you’re one of those
who go “ewww” at the mention of
gluten-free, this might just make you
change your mind. I know I did!

before letting it rest in the fridge to give it a
rounded shape when you cut it. While waiting
for the meat to rest, Chef Danny taught us how
to prepare the sauce for our Beef Wellington.
Excited about the idea of preparing my own
meal, I decided to give one of the classes a try.
Deciding on which class to attend, however,
wasn’t easy as there were many choices
and each and every one of them was just as
appealing. But after much consideration, I
decided to take on the challenge of making
the dish that always goes wrong in Gordon
Ramsey’s oh-so-dramatic Hell’s Kitchen, the
legendary Beef Wellington.
Once the sauce was ready, it was time for us
to get our hands dirty and wrap our own Beef
Wellington. With a puff pastry laid in front of
us, we arranged the bacon and spread the
sautéed spinach combination on top of the
bacon strips, in the middle of the puff pastry.
The round block of beef that was prepared
earlier was seasoned with salt and pepper, and
lightly seared on all sides before being placed
on top of the greens.
Arriving at the Starhill Culinary Studio, I was
greeted with a friendly smile from Angela, who
baby-sit me and the other rookies throughout
the session – making sure we were at our best
behaviour. The class was conducted by Chef
Danny Lau at Wai’s Kitchen and he kick-started
the class with a brief introduction and icebreaking session.
Topping off the meaty goodness was a layer of
foie gras spread, mustard powder and thyme
before wrapping it up into a round parcel and
glazed in egg yolk. With our signature pattern
carved on the top to mark our masterpiece, we
popped the Beef Wellington into the oven and
anxiously waited as it turned golden brown.
ining out can be a bit of a bore
sometimes, especially if you do it on
a daily basis. But at Starhill Culinary
Studio, you can spice things up by preparing
your own meal and dine in a posh home setup.
As everyone got comfortable in their classroomlike seats, Chef Danny began to briefly explain
the recipe as well as the ingredients used to
make the Beef Wellington. Starhill Culinary
Studio prepares the best ingredients for their
classes even though the amateur cooks might
not know how to differentiate their basils and
corianders.
When the time came for us to take our Beef
Wellington out from the oven, everyone was
excited to see how they turned out. I for one
was happy to say that I definitely wouldn’t have
Gordon Ramsey dumping my Beef Wellington
into the trash for being raw or overcooked.
After all the hard work, especially the plating
part thanks to my OCD, it was time to move
Fine graded bacon is used in the dish
Finishing touches with a pinch of salt
into the elegantly set up dining room to dine
on our masterpieces. Wining and dining over
an enjoyable conversation after all the hard
work just added up to the whole experience,
especially now that I had made some new
friends from as far as Indonesia and Taiwan.
Starhill Culinary Studio offers many other
interesting classes like this one that I had with

Sentosa,
Section 17
L
ocated along Jalan 17/27 in Section 17, Petaling Jaya is a strip full
of food. We discovered that the hawker area is known by several
names and we like many others, know it as Sentosa. There’s an array
of food stalls lined up on this road but we must warn you that not all the
hawkers here sell ‘halal’ food.
Fishball Noodle
Soup
(non-halal)
Fishball Noodle Soup is the most basic comfort
food one will find at a lot of typical noodle stalls.
Instead of the typical kuey teow noodles, I requested
for wanton noodles to complement the clear and
relatively MSG-free broth, topped with some spring
onion, sliced fish cakes and homemade fish balls.
Everything was great in its simple goodness, but
obviously the highlight was the fish ball. Fresh
with no overpowering fishy smell and with just the
right bounce. One bowl of the noodle soup costs
RM4.50 and our only complaint is that they served
more noodles than soup and we prefer it the other
way round.
Yong Tau Foo
(non-halal)
There are two yong tau foo stalls on the strip and
the one we’re talking about is located at the end of
the street right across the stall that sells drinks. For
RM5.80, you can pack your plate up with a number
of goodies. Ours consisted of fishballs, pork balls,
deep-fried wanton, kangkung, ladies fingers and tauki
(stuffed tofu skin) served with curry chee cheong fun.
The curry was quite pleasant as the consistency was
not as thick and it tasted just nice. It’s a great meal
if you don’t fancy stuffing your tummy with too much
goodies.
36 l KL LIFESTYLE
Bubur Cha Cha
Indulge in a spread of sweet and succulent tong
sui or in plain English, dessert. You will literally
be spoilt with choices as the stall offers an array
of sweet delights. We guarantee that you’ll find
something to suit your sweet tooth. Among the
soupy desserts you will find include ‘bubur kacang’,
sea coconut, red bean soup, black glutinous rice,
sweet potato, ‘bubur cha-cha’, papaya with white
fungus, sea coconut with white fungus and the list
goes on. Our yummy bowl of bubur cha cha was
at a great bargain of RM2 for a bowl.
Apam Balik
There’s a van that sells your typical tea-time favourites
like yam fritters, banana fritters and more. The
‘pakcik’ that operates this van also sells one big fan
favourite, which is the apom balik. His version is the
crispy one and although we liked how nicely crispy
it was, the filling was a bit of a disappointment.
There was hardly enough sweet corn, chopped nuts
and sugar in it but for RM2, you’ll get four crispy
apom balik. We’re making a note to ourselves that
we need to try his other fried goodies.

Padang food is originally the cuisine of the Minangkabau people
of West Sumatra, Indonesia. It is amongst the most popular food in
Maritime Southeast Asia. Padang food is very big here in Malaysia
as it is similar to traditional Malay dishes as both are famous for their
rich taste of coconut milk and spicy chilli ingredients. Of course, there
are similar dishes by name, yet one or two main ingredients used in a
Padang dish can give a totally different taste, texture and aroma.
Signature Padang dishes include ayam goreng berempah, daging
dendeng bakar (salai), daging dendeng berlado, rendang daging
Pariaman, ayam opor, ikan goreng sambal merah, ikan berlemak
belimbing, sotong berlado, sayur pucuk paku, sambal terung,
dendeng paru, udang sambal petai and udang tusuk. To make this a
unique dining experience, the ikan bakar live cooking action will be
a sure hit with customers. The perfect marination of 18 ingredients is
the secret to Padang’s recipe. The price for this delectable spread is
RM128++ per person.

Ramadan
Sweets
After a long day of fasting, it would be nice to have a sweet treat to break yout fast,
especially if you have a sweet tooth. Here’s our personal selection of some classic
sugary treats to have this Ramadan.
Sirap Selasih
A glass of water makes the perfect opener to break fast and the
old school sirap selasih never fails to do the trick. A type of cordial
traditionally made from rose extract mixed with a generous portion
of water and a spoon or two of basil seeds gives you the Malaysian
version of the Taiwanese bubble tea. As simple as 1-2-3, this drink
is easy to make and deliciously fun, especially when it’s icy cold.

Putu Piring
Forget gourmet cakes and desserts. This Ramadan, you should
indulge in some local treats like the Putu Piring, a simple rice cake
filled with gula Melaka and freshly grated coconut that’s a popular
hit at the Ramadan bazaars. Its soft and slightly crumbly texture
accompanied by the sweetness of the palm sugar is definitely one
of the best ways to end your break fast meal.

Stuffed Dates
A date is traditionally the first thing eaten to break the fast, followed
by juice. Baaji’s wide selection of dates goes beyond plain old
preserved dates that we usually get at the grocers. From plain
selections of Saudi and Tunisian dates to stuffed and chocolatecoated dates, you’ll be spoilt for selection as you browse through
the choices available from Baaji’s.

HEALTH & BEAUTY
An oasis of regeneration and beauty smack
in the city centre, the Spa Village Kuala
Lumpur is where the new meets old to deliver
a unique healing culture. Paying homage to
the cultural diversity and rich healing heritage
of Malaysia, the spa blends ancient practices
with modern, using natural local ingredients
to provide a blissful relaxation and recovery
opportunity via a mix of the world’s most
sophisticated therapies. Their therapies range
across a spectrum of treatments – from the most
traditional of Malay to the Sensory Room, the
only one of its kind in Asia that will provide a
combination of sensory sensations designed to
soothe and heighten awareness.
Sensing a desperate need for a massage, I
decided to give the Spa Village Kuala Lumpur
a try, especially after hearing some pretty good
comments about their therapies from fellow spa
aficionados. Located within the premises of The
Ritz-Carlton in Bukit Bintang, the Spa Village
Kuala Lumpur is easily accessible via public
transport if you want to avoid getting stuck in
heavy traffic after your visit. I know I did, so
I took the monorail, which stops just about a
5-minute walk away.
Arriving at the spa, I received a warm welcome
from their staff at the reception area. I was then
led to the waiting area where I was given the
spa menu to decide which treatment I would go
for, over a cup of tea. The spa menu was quite
overwhelming and it took me much longer than
finishing my tea to decide which treatment I’d
go for – even longer if didn’t have some help
from my therapist.
After much pondering, I opted for an ala
carte experience with the Campur-Campur,
which means a blending of varieties in Malay.
Combining the best techniques of Malay
and Thai massage, this exclusive signature
creation of Spa Village uses touch, tone and
aromatherapy to give you a unique and
memorable experience. The scent of lemongrass
and pandan leaves fills the air as steamed
Chinese Peranakan treatment ingredients
herbs are pressed along the body using a
traditional steam pouch.
In the oversized treatment room with an
attached jacuzzi, I was given some privacy
to change and select the aromatherapy oil
that I would like to have. Since I was there to
reenergise, I chose the uplifting oil, which is a
blend of pink grapefruit, lime and mandarin that
smelled oh-so-good. My therapist, Junah, then
started off the massage with a medium pressure
that sent me right into slumber. Following the
aromatherapy massage was the warm steam
pouches being pressed on my body to relax the
muscles before finishing the massage with a
quick rattan tapping.
The 90 minutes seemed to pass swiftly and how
I wished I didn’t have to get off the bed. I was
told not to take a shower until three hours later,
in order to let the aromatherapy oil work its
wonders. Unlike most of the massages I’ve went
to, I didn’t feel as sticky because the therapist
wiped off the access oil after pressing the steam
pouch. So, taking a bath only three hours later
was not much of a qualm, especially since I
felt a lot lighter after the massage. The hard
bumps I had on my shoulders due to too much
hovering over the keyboard was no where to
be felt as well.
Leaving the Spa Village Kuala Lumpur a
happy camper, I look forward to come back
in the near future for a Sensory Exploration
experience. I was told that I would encounter
sounds, sights, smells, tastes and textures that
would heighten my connection to the world
around me and to my inner self, upon stepping
into the Sensory Room. If you’re looking for a
different way to spend time with your girlfriends,
the Sensory Exploration can take up to six
guests at a time. You will be guided on a
90-minute’s Sensory Exploration that includes
aromatherapy, tasting, vibration, ancient and
natural sounds and sensory relaxation, as well
as a scalp and foot massage.

T

gained a huge number of participants in
recent years. Capoeira is a combination
of martial arts, music, and dance. It is
believed to have started in Brazil by African

styles of the various tribes sometime after the
sixteenth century. It was developed in the
region of Quilombo dos Palmares, located
in the Brazilian state of Alagoas, which was
known to be the state of Pernambuco before

in the states of Bahia, Pernambuco, Rio de

a great workout, you will learn the exciting
