FROM THE PRINCIPAL’S DESK
Dear parents/caregivers,
We are entering the time of year when we
celebrate the achievements of our students
for 2015. Last Monday, at our Sports
Awards Evening, we acknowledged the
great work of our sporting teams and
athletes. Congratulations to all those who
received awards and a special mention to
our three top awards winners, Elly Buckholz - Junior
Sportsperson of the year, Jason Castle - Senior Sportsman of
the year and Sabrina Savill - Senior Sportswoman of the year. A
full list of our major sports’ award winners can be found in this
newsletter.

November 20 to complete QCAA attendance requirements for
certification. I look forward to seeing all Year 12 students and
their parents/carers at the Valedictory Ceremony to officially
farewell them from our school.
Our next Parents and Citizens’ Association meeting is on this

We continue the celebration of student success at our Awards
Night this Tuesday, October 27, where we will recognise the
outstanding academic, artistic and citizenship achievements
of our students. There will be three more inductees onto the
school’s ‘Wall of Excellence’, so please join us at our premier
night for student recognition.
Thank you to our Year 12 students for a great night at your
formal. It is always amazing to see these young men and
women in their suits and gowns enjoying themselves. It was
a night that will long be remembered by students and staff.
Our Year 12 students now face a very busy period as they
race towards the end of their schooling. All Year 12 students
have some very important assessment to complete before they
can relax and I ask all parents and carers to encourage their
students to work right up to the end of their exams. So much
can be gained in these last few weeks and the reverse is also
true, so much can be lost. Year 12 exams will commence on
Wednesday, November 11. Parents are reminded that Year 12
students are only required to attend school for their scheduled
exams and they must be in full school uniform, including correct
footwear.
We will farewell our Year 12 students at the Valedictory
Ceremony on Thursday, November 19. This is an invitation only
event and students are required to wear their formal uniform for
the Valedictory, including the correct shoes. Students who do

however, as the Year 12 leadership camp for 2016 has now
been changed to take place in that week, the work placement

Industry Pathways
Caboolture State High School offers a variety of subject options
for students in the senior school. More and more, there are also
a range of industry pathways which are available in conjunction
with students’ senior studies. Currently, some of the industry
pathways on offer include:
• Certificate III in Early Childhood Education and Care
• Certificate II in Automotive Servicing
• Diploma of Business
• Certificate II&III in Health Support Services
• A range of TAFE courses (some with a fee, some are
free)
• A range of vocational courses from other providers.
At any time throughout the year, students can come to the
Senior Schooling HOD office (administration building) and see
the industry pathways list.

QCS Test
A huge congratulations to all of the Year 12
students who sat the QCS test at the end of
Term 3. The QCS test was conducted on 1
and 2 September in the school hall.
Students were provided with a range of fruit
and juice for breakfast, and then provided a
healthy bread roll for lunch. The two days
were exhausting for everyone involved, but the Year 12s should
be congratulated for their prompt attendance on the day, as
well as their enduring efforts throughout the two days.
This year, the Year 12 QCS individual results will be available
to students via the student connect website after 9am
Wednesday, 18 November. Students will need their LUI number
(located on school ID card) to log in to student connect.
Year 12 Leadership Camp 2016
It is a Caboolture State High School tradition that Year 12
students attend a leadership camp in the first three days of the
school year. For 2016 Year 12s however, rather than attending
camp in January, the camp will now be at the end of Year
11 in 2015. The new dates for the Senior Leadership Camp
are November 25-27. Further information about the camp,
permission notes and payment information was handed to
students last week.
Year 11 students in vocational courses with
structured work placement please note:
It is usually timetabled into the school calendar that all Year
11 students in vocational courses with compulsory work
placement, attend this during Week 8 of Term 4. This year

YEAR 11 NEWS
Term 4 has kicked off with a bang, with the
Year 11s hitting the ground running. We
have
a
shortened
term
with
block-examinations, so have a very busy
five weeks ahead.
In the past, the Senior Leadership camp
has occurred in the first three days of Year
12. This year, a school decision has been
made to ease the transition into the new school year, to hold
the Leadership camp in the last week of Year 11. The new
dates for the Leadership camp are 25 to 27 November 2015.
The Leadership camp takes place at Noosa’s Northshore and is
designed to promote team-spirit, nurture leadership, and foster
new relationships with their peers. More details, regarding this
camp, were given to students last week.
At the end of Term 3, a number of students nominated for
School and Vice-Captains. This is a multi-stage process,
requiring students to nominate, respond to selection criteria,
write and perform a speech in front of peers and staff, and
attend an interview process - much like a job application. In this
process, students nominate and respond to why they make the
ideal leader for Caboolture State High School for 2016. With
such a high calibre of applicants, I know the school leaders
for 2016 will make excellent role models. The School and
Vice-Captains will be announced at Valedictory, on 19
November, in front of the current Year 12 cohort and families.
During the Leadership camp in November, students will also
vote for their House Leaders and Captains of their houses.
Nominations for this were due 16 October. Students who have
nominated for leadership positions in 2016 have a selection
criteria they have responded to. With such a strong group of
athletes in the current Year 11 Cohort, our sporting carnivals will
be led by excellent Leaders and Captains in 2016.
Following in tradition, the current Year 11 student body voted
on a jersey design. The winning jersey was designed by our
Jersey Committee. In Week 1 of Term 4, a note was sent
home to all families regarding the 2016 Senior Leaders Jersey.
Jerseys are $69.85, payable to the Cashier. There are two key
dates to keep in mind for jerseys and payment. Deposits of $35
for jerseys and names for jerseys were due Friday, 23 October.
Remaining balance, in full, is due 12 February 2016. Students
have been attending jersey sizings during house-group over the
last two weeks, with a final make-up sizing to be on Monday,
26 October during second lunch.
Over the September school holidays, I had the pleasure of
attending the Annual School Ski Trip to Perisher. This year, four
Year 11 students attended. Corey Carroll, Steele Ford, Nathan
Francis and Grace Fenwick spent four days on the slopes, all
snowboarding at Mount Perisher. The maturity, willingness, and
adventure displayed by these students during the six day trip
was commendable, despite the bus dance moves and dreaded
creek challenge. Expressions of interest for the ski trip will be
out later this term. This is an extra curriculum excursion, but
provides students with the opportunity to experience snow with
their peers.
With so much going on over the next five weeks at school,
stress management and looking after yourself will be
paramount. It is a good time to focus on making sure we are
eating properly, getting plenty of sleep, and taking 30 minutes
to exercise. Enjoy the term, I’m looking forward to reading out
the names of our leaders for 2016 and fostering those positive
relationships on Leadership camp.

JUNIOR SECONDARY NEWS
As we welcome Term 4, I hope our Junior
Secondary students are taking advantage
of the last opportunities, academic and
otherwise, available to them at their current
year level. The following are a few things
that are coming up over the next seven
weeks.
Term 3 report cards have been distributed
and therefore PRIDE letters will be on the
way in the post shortly. To achieve PRIDE
status, students must receive all Excellent and/or Very Good in
Effort and Behaviour on their report card. Our final PRIDE
excursion will be occurring on Monday, 7 December with the
students booked in at Aussie World on the Sunshine Coast.
Congratulations to those students who will be eligible to attend
this trip.
Our Year 8 students have been participating in literacy and
numeracy rotation sessions during access this semester and
this program will continue to run into Term 4. Our Year 8s are
also currently participating in the process of nominating and
selecting their Junior Secondary Captains and House Leaders
who will be appointed by the end of this term. If your child
would like to nominate to participate in the Leadership process,
they need to speak to Ms Pinney in K-Block ASAP.
3
I encourage all students to continue trying their best right up
until the last day of Term 4, bringing the right equipment,
wearing the correct uniform, handing in assessment and
studying hard for their final end of year exams.

YEAR 8 NEWS
As the year draws to a close, it is hard to
believe that the Year 8s have almost
finished their first year of high school. As
usual,
students
have
been
busy
participating in various school events and
activities. On 9 September, the school
celebrated R U OK Day by hosting a
sausage sizzle to create awareness for
mental health. Students were encouraged
to take this opportunity to ask their peers “R U OK?”
At the end of each term, students who demonstrate the
school’s values of PRIDE are rewarded by taking part in an
excursion to a theme park. For Term 3, we took 15 Year 8
students to Movie World. It was great to see those students
enjoying themselves on the rides and having fun, knowing that
they have given everything they can to their studies.
As a part of the Year 8 High Resolves and Global Citizenship
program, students are encouraged to give back to the local
community. This semester, the Year 8 cohort have been
running the Friends of the Street Food Drive to raise much
needed funds for the Wunya Support Centre who provide food
for the disadvantaged of Caboolture.
The Junior Secondary Leadership selection process for 2016
has also officially begun. As Year 9 leaders, the Junior
Secondary Captains, Vice Captains and House Leaders will be
responsible for building team spirit and organising and running
events in 2016. The Junior Secondary leadership selection
process is outlined below for students who are wishing to
become leaders in 2016:
impressive. This shows what our students are capable of and
I’d like to commend all of them for their efforts.
Thursday, 10 September saw R U OK Day promoted by Year 7
leaders. The purpose of this was to foster positive discussions
about wellbeing at our school. It was an important day to raise
awareness for this important cause and to remind students
about the support they can access at school. This was further
reinforced with activities in their Access lesson. Year 7 leaders
assisted with a luncheon on the day and this gave them a
hands-on role during the event.
Term 4 began with the girls being reintroduced to Mrs Brady
and Mrs Everitt: our Head of Department for Junior Secondary
and our Student Mentor. This information session was set up
to discuss how to maintain positive relationships with others as
well as discuss resilience building strategies. The girls reported
that they found the session fun and entertaining – a big thank
you to Mrs Brady and Mrs Everitt! The boys were mature and
respectful during their information session with Josh Woods,
our School Chaplain. All students were given the opportunity to
ask questions and we did our best to answer as many as we
were able to.
I’d like to acknowledge the unsung heroes who have done so
much for our students this year. The ladies in C block go above
and beyond to assist with organising events for the cohort thank you to Ms Haynes, Ms Long and Ms Dutka.
As the school year comes to a close, it is interesting to note that
the current Year 7s will be graduating in 2020. I’m sure the time
will fly by just as this year has.

This has been a momentous year, not just
for the students, but also for community
members and teachers alike. Our inaugural

SAND AND SEA … AND SPIDERS - YEAR
9 AND 10 GEOGRAPHY MORETON
ISLAND ADVENTURE
“Do we really have to leave?!” was the
consensus about our 2015 Geography
Moreton Island Adventure. This year we
saw even more of the island on our two day
camp and ‘WOW’, what an adventure it
was.
The day began early but before we knew it
we were on the high seas and gliding over
the waters of Moreton Bay to our destination. The views from
the catamaran were beautiful and the first of many ‘things to
remember’ about the trip.
Let’s start with the wildlife for I guess once we got onto the
island, it was the wildlife that caught everyone’s attention …
some of the biggest spiders anyone had seen! These were
friendly: not so the inquisitive curlew guarding its chicks ….
and preventing entrance to one of the tents! More importantly,
though, was the wildlife we came to see: multiple whales
breaching close to shore at Cape Moreton and the myriad
of fish we saw while snorkelling the Tangalooma wrecks. The
schools were so thick it was amazing.
Snorkelling was only one of many fantastic experiences: we
drove on rough 4WD tracks and across pristine beaches; we
swam in tidal pools and freshwater lakes; we sand-boarded
down huge dunes; we gazed at sunsets; we sat under the stars
and chatted around our camp fire. It was a hugely rewarding
two days.
‘Many thanks’ are due to those who made the day a success:
you the students for your exemplary behaviour; Mrs Stanger
and Mrs Burton for their valuable assistance; and Livio/Olivio,
our

driver
from
Sunrover

Stay tuned for where our 2016 adventure might take us.

SUNSHINE COAST: SUNSHINE BEACH,
PARADISE CAVES AND NOOSA
NATIONAL PARK – YEAR 11
GEOGRAPHY
August 14 produced an absolutely beautiful
day for our Year 11 Geographers to head to
the Sunshine Coast to study Coastal
Management.
First stop was the beautiful Rocky Coast
Reserve between Point Arkwright and
Coolum Heads where we learnt about
coastal processes and got some ideas
about managing this scenic area.
Our main study area was the northern section of Sunshine
Beach and the spectacular Paradise Caves in Noosa National
Park. After a short walk to the beach, students settled to take
notes about environmental and management issues along the
beach and how to deal with these. This was followed by a
walk along the beach to the headland. The climb to the top
of the headland, although a little rocky, was easily managed
by all students. As always, it was well worth the effort: the
views of the caves, the waves crashing onto the headland,
and the beaches to the south were, quite simply, breathtaking.
Once again, students noted the erosional processes at work
and looked at possible solutions to environmental processes to
manage the area.
After the long walk back to the bus, students topped off the day
with a well-earned lunch at the Sunshine Beach shops.
Some students’ thoughts of the day:
• ‘A fun, educational day which was
good to expand our knowledge of
the research for our assignment.’
(Kate)
• ‘A good day out at the beach, learning about Geo
while having a good time.’ (Lucas)
• ‘The day taught me a lot. It was nice being around
the lovely scenery and was an enjoyable experience.’
(Chantelle)
• ‘A major help in completing our assignment and
making the subject interesting.’(Rachel)
A big thank-you goes to Mr Boxall and Mr Spaull (pre-service
teacher) for their help on the day. As well, I would like to thank
all the students who worked hard to make the day a success.

ICT – BIG DAY IN
ICT Services have been very busy getting
ready for the roll out of the eJunior and
eSenior programs next year. Our 2016
model aims to offer a highly supported ICT
environment
through
providing
two
purchasing options for parents. An outline
of these and other options can be found
here.
A small group of Year 10 LearnIT students attended the ACS
Foundations “Big Day In” held at QUT. Students listened to
lead speakers from companies such as Microsoft, Westpac,
IBM, WiseTech Global and Adobe talking about the future of
technology and how students can get involved in shaping the
future. One of our lucky students even walked away with an
Xbox One from the day.
The Year 10 LearnIT students are nearly finished their Certificate
II in Information, Digital Media & Technology. Lilly Wease wrote
this reflection of Term 3 in the LearnIT program:
“Throughout Year 10 LearnIT so far, we have explored
many interesting topics ranging from creating games,
social media study, hardware and software, flash
animation and premier pro. This year has been super
fun with many great opportunities towards our future.
My favourite topic this year would have had to be
GameMaker as it was easy to work with and is an
exciting program. I am looking forward to eSenior in the
near future. We have all had so much fun this year and
can’t wait to get our Certificate II!”
LearnIT enrolments for next year are nearly finalised and offers
will be sent out soon. Looking forward to a busy Term 4.

YEAR 12 ANCIENT HISTORY STUDENTS
FIND RELIGION
On Thursday, 17 September, students of
Year 12 Ancient History travelled to
Brisbane to investigate a number of Eastern
religions associated with their unit on “The
Religions of Ancient China and India”.
In the morning, they visited the Chung Tian
Temple at Priestdale. Students were given a
tour of the Bodhisattva Hall and other areas
of the Buddhist complex. They were shown
how to meditate, practise Chinese
calligraphy and were involved in an offering ceremony to the
Bodhisattva. The newly built Pagoda and the museum with its
statues of Buddha and models of the Entombed Warriors were
highlights. The visit to the Chung Tian Temple, set in its beautiful
parks and gardens, was amazing.
At lunchtime, we made our way to Chinatown in Fortitude Valley
for a delicious Chinese banquet at the Golden Palace Chinese
Restaurant which is famous in Brisbane for its wonderful food.
Students had time then to stroll through the Chinatown Mall to
soak up the atmosphere. After lunch, we travelled to Breakfast
Creek to visit the Chinese Temple Society. The Breakfast Creek
Temple, built in 1885, contains elements of Confucianism,
Daoism and Buddhism and is dedicated to Queensland’s early
Chinese pioneers.
In the late afternoon, we toured the Evergreen Daoist Temple at
Deagon. This Temple is a splendid structure on a grand scale with its huge ceremonial doors, statues of Daoist gods, murals,
paintings and architecture. Feng Shui had been used to design
the complex and there’s evidence of Yin and Yang principles all
around.
It was a pleasure to take the Year 12 Ancient History students
on their excursion because of their cooperation and good
humour. They looked very well presented in their formal
uniforms and received praise for their behaviour at the various
venues, especially at the Chinese Restaurant. A big thank you
must go to Mrs. Creffield, my fellow Ancient History Teacher,
and Josh Woods, our School Chaplain, for accompanying us
on this important excursion and helping with supervision.
Overall, it was a truly wonderful day.

ARE YOU A PARENT OF A CHILD WITH
TYPE 1 DIABETES?
Every day thousands of Australian children
suffer the effects of type 1 diabetes, and
families struggle with illness management
and children’s behavioural and emotional
adjustment.
Positive Parenting for Healthy Living is an adaptation of the
successful Triple P - Positive Parenting Program, offering
practical ideas and support for parents of children with type
1 diabetes. This innovative group program is designed to help
parents manage their child’s illness, assist children in coping
with their illness and emotions, and prevent and manage
difficult child behaviour.
Over the next few months and for a limited time only, parents
of 2-10 year old children with type 1 diabetes are able to
access Positive Parenting for Healthy Living Triple P free of
charge as part of a University of Queensland research project.
