The After Eight Game.
AS MADE FAMOUS IN OUR RECENT TV COMMERCIAL FEATURING JIM HAYNES’ PARISIAN DINNER PARTIES,
THIS GAME IS BEST ENJOYED BY THOSE WHO DON’T TAKE THEMSELVES ENTIRELY SERIOUSLY. TAKING
IT IN TURNS (AND MAKING SURE EVERYONE ELSE IS WATCHING, TO ENSURE MAXIMUM HUMILIATION)
BALANCE AN AFTER EIGHT MINT ON YOUR FOREHEAD. THEN USING ONLY FACIAL MOVEMENTS,
CAREFULLY MANOEUVRE IT DOWN INTO YOUR MOUTH. BELIEVE US, IT’S A LOT HARDER THAN IT
SOUNDS. AND IT’S EVEN MORE DIFFICULT ONCE THE AFTER EIGHT MINT STARTS MELTING.
RULES: NO HANDS ALLOWED.
TIP: CHILLING YOUR AFTER EIGHT MINTS FIRST CAN MAKE THIS GAME A BIT EASIER.
1
After Eight Random.
EMPTY OUT A BOX OF AFTER EIGHT MINTS ONTO A TABLE AND SPACE THEM OUT INTO A FAIRLY NEAT
GRID. THEN TAKE IT IN TURNS TO PICK UP EITHER ONE, TWO OR THREE MINTS. THE IDEA OF THE GAME
IS TO AVOID PICKING UP THE VERY LAST MINT (AND HAVING TO PERFORM A SUITABLY EMBARRASSING
FORFEIT).
RULES: TAKE NO MORE THAN THREE MINTS AT A TIME.
TIP: THE FORFEIT COULD BE STANDING UP TO SING A SONG OR HELPING WITH THE WASHING UP.
2
Shove After Eight.
A CLEVER SPIN ON THE TRADITIONAL PUB GAME, ‘SHOVE HA’PENNY’, THIS PARTY PLEASER NEEDS
A LOT OF SKILL AND A LONG EMPTY TABLE. THE IDEA IS TO REST AN AFTER EIGHT MINT SO THAT IT
OVERHANGS THE TABLE EDGE. THEN USING THE FLATTENED PALM OF YOUR HAND, ‘SHOVE’ THE MINT,
SENDING IT DOWN THE TABLE INTO A MARKED OUT TARGET AREA. THE MOST ACCURATE
‘MINT-SHOVER’ IS THE WINNER.
RULES: ONLY ONE ‘SHOVE’ IS ALLOWED. IT’S OK IF YOUR MINT SHOVES OTHER PLAYERS’ MINTS OUT OF
THE AREA (A BIT LIKE BOWLS OR CURLING).
TIP: AFTER EIGHT MINTS TEND TO ‘SHOVE’ A BIT FURTHER WITH THEIR WRAPPERS LEFT ON.
3
After Eight Flick.
THIS GAME TAKES CAT-LIKE REFLEXES. THE AIM IS TO PLACE AN AFTER EIGHT MINT SO THAT IT HANGS
OUT OVER THE EDGE OF THE TABLE, AND USING THE BACK OF YOUR FINGER TIPS, FLICK IT UP INTO THE
AIR AND CATCH IT - WITH THE SAME HAND WITHOUT TURNING IT OVER. SOUND TOO EASY? NOW SEE
WHO CAN DO IT WITH THE MOST NUMBER OF MINTS AT ONCE.
RULES: NO CHEATING! FLICK AND CATCH WITH THE SAME HAND WITHOUT TURNING IT OVER.
TIP: TRY TO FLICK AND CATCH IN ONE SMOOTH MOVEMENT AND DON’T FLICK YOUR MINT TOO HIGH.
4
After Eight Elbow Snatch.
YOU MAY HAVE SEEN SOMETHING DONE LIKE THIS BEFORE WITH A STACK OF COINS, BUT AS YOU CAN’T
EAT COINS, THIS VERSION IS FAR BETTER! BRING YOUR HAND UP TO YOUR EAR AND BALANCE AN
AFTER EIGHT MINT ON YOUR ELBOW. THEN WITH A SINGLE DOWNWARD SWING OF THE SAME ARM,
CATCH THE MINT IN YOUR HAND (OBVIOUSLY TRYING NOT TO SQUASH IT). THE WINNER IS THE PERSON
WHO SNATCHES THE MOST MINTS IN ONE GO.
RULES: ONLY ONE ARM CAN BE USED.
TIP: IT CAN HELP TO FLICK YOUR ELBOW UP CUNNINGLY THE MOMENT BEFORE THE SNATCH.
5
After Eight Duel.
THIS GAME TAKES TWO PLAYERS, TWO DESSERT SPOONS AND TWO AFTER EIGHT MINTS. EACH PLAYER
ARMS THEMSELVES WITH AN UPTURNED DESSERT SPOON AND BALANCES THE AFTER EIGHT MINT ON IT.
THEN, IN A KIND OF CHOCOLATY DUEL, THEY MUST USE THEIR SPOON TO TRY TO KNOCK THEIR OPPONENT’S
AFTER EIGHT TO THE FLOOR, WITHOUT DROPPING THEIR OWN.
RULES: NO LICKING THE AFTER EIGHT BEFORE THE DUEL TO GET IT TO STICK TO THE SPOON!
TIP: YOU CAN GAIN THE ADVANTAGE BY ATTACKING YOUR OPPONENTS SPOON FROM ABOVE.
6
After Eight Tower.
THIS ONE TAKES A VERY STEADY HAND AND A NUMBER OF AFTER EIGHT MINTS. FIND AN EMPTY WINE
BOTTLE (WHICH SHOULDN’T BE TOO TRICKY), STAND IT IN THE MIDDLE OF YOUR DINNER TABLE AND
BALANCE A SINGLE AFTER EIGHT MINT ON THE TOP OF ITS NECK. THEN GET EACH OF YOUR GUESTS TO
ADD ANOTHER MINT, TO BUILD AN INCREASINGLY WOBBLY TOWER. THE PERSON WHO FINALLY TOPPLES
THE TOWER IS THE LOSER. (ALTHOUGH THEY PROBABLY SHOULD BE THANKED FOR LETTING YOU ALL
TUCK INTO A PILE OF AFTER EIGHT MINTS.)
RULES: FOR THIS GAME THERE ARE NO RULES.
TIP: THIS GAME CAN TAKE A LOT OF AFTER EIGHT MINTS, SO IT’S BEST TO PLAY IT BEFORE YOU’VE
EATEN TOO MANY.
7
After Eight Football.
FOR THIS, YOU’LL NEED TO SPLIT INTO TWO TEAMS (EQUIPPED WITH DRINKING STRAWS) ON OPPOSITE
SIDES OF AN EMPTY TABLE. PLACE AN AFTER EIGHT MINT STILL IN ITS WRAPPER IN THE MIDDLE OF THE
TABLE. THEN USING YOUR STRAWS, WORK TOGETHER TO TRY TO BLOW THE MINT OFF YOUR
OPPONENTS’ SIDE OF THE TABLE.
RULES: NO PHYSICAL CONTACT IS ALLOWED (APART FROM THE OCCASIONAL CLASH OF STRAWS).
TIP: FOR A BIT MORE OF A CHALLENGE, WHY NOT USE SOME GOAL POSTS? SALT AND PEPPER POTS,
SAUCE BOTTLES ETC.
