-101THE PRESIDENT'S LETTER
AN URGENT MESSAGE
Subject:
RR 7762
CLOSING CENSUS RECORDS TO PUBLIC
Dear Members,
It has come to our attention that there is a bill in Congress to close all census
records to the public. There also seems to be an amendment to allow the 1900
census to be examined by certified genealogists and historians.
It I sound confused, it is because I am. The wording of the bill is confusing
and appears to contradict itself. Even my senator and representative gave
different interpretations of the bill. We are ·still trying to find out more about
the matter, but in the meantime, we urge all of you to WRITE TO YOUR CONGRESSMEN
in protest of any possible closing of the pre-1900 censuses and of limiting access
to certified genealogists. Ask for copies of HR 7762 and No. 93-246, and read for
yourself.
ACT Na-l.
TOMORROW MAY BE TOO LATE ~
The following are the main paragraphs from
feelings on the matter.
(
my
letter of protest, which express
my
"The startling and appalling news that there are bills pending in Congress to
close the pre-1900 censuses to the public has just reached me. This is utterly
ridiculous~ I can well understand withholding census information until after the
lifetime of the people contained in it, but it mak:es no sense to close records
that have been open to the public for a long period of time as these have been.
Most of it is on microfilm in major libraries all over the country, and much of
it is in print. Does Congress intend to confiscate all these copies? Are we to
have book-burnings as Hitler's Germany did?
"Genealogy is one of the foremost hobbies of Americans, and most prefer to 'do it
themselves', for it is in this that the challenge and pleasure lies. Most are not
looking for illustrious ancestors, but are searching for their American heritage
and history. The famous American Spirit has already been dragging its tail in the
past few decades. Are we to stamp it out altogether? What better way is there to
inspire loyalty and patriotism than to study the role our ancestors played in
building our country?
"The words 'certified genealogist' •••• disturb me. There are many, many genealogists
equally as competent who are not certified because they have no desire to make
money from genealogy; so certification would serve them no purpose. Why should
the censuses be available to those who wish to make money from it and closed to
those who don '·t? ••••••• "
Your president,
/I..;;d; d. AI• ."

P.S.
My soapbox took most of my space, but I do want to say that our Kentucky
Seminar was quite successful. Eyeryone seemed to enjoy Mr. Hinds' talk.
The best part was seeing all you out-of-town people again and meeting a
few new ones.
-102NOTES FROM THE EDITOR'S DESK
Our book review section is rather brief this m~nth, due to the illness of our
faithful reviewer, HERMAN L. BOGAN. Illness also has eliminated from this issue
THE FILE BOX column, written by Associate Editor JERRY BLAIR. Best wishes to both
for quick recoveries and returns to the pages of "ANSEARCHIN"'.
The Society regrets the resignation of MRS. H. H. SHUMAKER, who has done a
wonderful job of keeping the Society's scrapbook. Heartfelt thanks to Mrs. Shumaker
for her competent performance of this work and unflagging interest in the Society.
She promises to help whenever possible.

KALEIDOSCOPIC FAMILY, BASS 1769-1971. DESCENDANTS OF TWO BROTHERS, PETER AND
LAWRENCE BASS. Mrs. J. M. Wood, Jr. (Christine), compiler and editor (1971).
Soft cover, over 183 pages, indexed. Order from Mrs. J. M. Wood, Jr., 2410
47th St., Lubbock, Texas 79412. $9.00.
The Bass family of Missouri originated in the persons of two brothers, Peter and
Lawrence Bass, who were born in Baltimore, Maryland (1769-1780). Both died in
Missouri. The story of these two men and their descendants is thrillingly told
in KALEIDOSCOPIC FAMILY. This was a Southern family, and most of them were for
the Confederacy. The stories and lives of these people are those of the early
settlement of the upper South (Va., Ky., Tenn. and Mo.), and are of undying
interest. Very much genealogical information is found here.
GIRLS CHRISTIAN NAMES, THEIR HISTORY, MEANING AND ASSOCIATION by Helena Swan (1973).
Hard cover, over 516 pages, indexed. Order from Charles E. Tuttle Company,
Rutland, Vermont 65701. $5.50.
Do you have, or have you had a baby girl in your home? if not, you have been
fortunate enough to have a sister, and, of course, your mother will be of precious
memory to you. Their names -- where did they get them and what do the names mean?
This little dictionary and history will be a delight to you. Perhaps you will be
in need of a name for a little girl -- your little girl? Then for a small price
you can put this wonderful publication in your home. It is an excellent and well
done little book.
1850 U. S. CENSUS, COLUMBIA COUNTY, GEORGIA by Mrs. W. D. Theim (1969). Soft
cover, over 77 pages, indexed. Order from Mrs. W. D. Theirm"Route 3, Box 142-A,
San Angelo, Texas 76901. $6.50.
This is an excellent publication, and has an important place in the records of
Georgia. Richmond County (Augusta is the county seat) is the mother county from
which Columbia was formed Dec. 19, 1790. Richmond County was formed in 1777 from
St. Paul's Parish. The Creek Indians ceded the territory to the colony of Georgia
on May 20, 1733. St. Paul's Parish, Richmond County, Columbia CQunty, and Augusta,
Georgia, are rich in genealogical information, and .lmost everyone who went to
Georgia and on south and west passed through these points. The work is well done.
1850 CENSUS, LAWRENCE COUNTY, TENNESSEE, INCLUDING SOME OTHER EARLY RECORDS by
Marymaud Killen Carter and Joan Coffey Hudgins (1973). Soft cover, over 164
pages, indexed. Order from C & H, 221 Admiral Circle, Lawrenceburg,
Tennessee 38464. $10.50.
The book is a genealogical composite of several sources of information about early
Lawrence County, Tennessee. In addition to the 1850 census of the county, there
are- found: "Field Calls for First Civil Dis tricts, Lawrence County, Tennessee";
1800 census; 1818 list of taxables, polls and census; 1820 census; some marriages
pri~r to 1838.
Each item has a separate index. The publication is very well
done, and a valuable contribution to Tennessee genealogy.

Note from contributor: Thomas Springfield is believed to be the son of Thomas
and Dicey (Langston) Springfield of Edgecombe, North Carolina. He brought his
family to Denmark, Tennessee, in 1836, settling on a plantation there. Known
marriages of his children are: Sarah m. Maj. R. D. Cross; Elizabeth m. F. B.
Ragland; Charity m. Thomas Jefferson Neely. The Springfields were not a numerous
family, but there were many Langstons in N. C. before 1800. Dicey, dau. of Solomon
Langston, lived near Greenville, S. C. during the Revolution. G.P.R.
