New technologies and exhibitors at Automotive Interiors Expo 2015
New FIA-approved lightweight safety webbing
Spanish automotive manufacturer, Ponsa, plans to bring its newest motorsport webbing to
audiences at this year’s Automotive Interiors Expo.
The new patented webbing was created in partnership with OMP, and is designed to be the lightest
yet most resistant safety harness, suitable for all car competitions. The product has been approved
by several racecar manufacturers and the FIA, and is currently being used in Formula 1 and the Rally
World Championship (WRC), among other race series.
Ponsa says the webbing is manufactured using the latest technical fibres with advanced finishing,
which add up to a product that is 50% lighter and 30% more resistant than previous webbings.

New environmentally friendly, coloured plastics range
Addiplast plans to unveil its new ADDIBIO Renew GEI 52009 + GEI 52021 products at this year’s
Automotive Interiors Expo.
These bio-based compounds are designed for coloured interior aesthetic parts, and have been
created to be totally in line with the green materials policies of OEMs.
With very low density, the new products use a renewable PP compound, which Addiplast says is the
answer to the ever-important weight and cost saving dilemma because it is able to be injected into
the same tools as PP filled with minerals.
ADDIBIO RENEW GJI 52066 is designed for structural parts, to increase weight saving to more than
20% with a high modulus and high heat resistance >115°C, and designed with a visible natural fibre
aspect to be customised to customers’ requests.

New aluminium supplier
Aludium, exhibiting at this year’s Automotive Interiors Expo, is a newly formed company comprised
of three former Alcoa mills in Spain and France and a state-of-the-art aluminium research and
development centre in Spain.
Combining these assets under the Aludium brand by Atlas Holdings, Aludium’s facilities have deep
industrial pedigree, with a specialism in automotive trim products and decorative finishes with high
surface quality and a good level of response to bright and anodised surface treatments.
The new company is focusing on its lead product, Decorandum, a high-quality, lightweight rolled
aluminium sheet that is available in a range of brushed surfaces and can be rolled to thicknesses as
low as 0.1mm.
The company says the metallurgical structure of its products creates the drawing, forming and
assembly processes, which are achieved via its R&D and manufacturing technologies using highpurity alloys.

Non-wovens for high-performance motorsport
Automotive Interiors Expo exhibitor, Sandler AG, specialises in developing and manufacturing nonwoven roll goods, and ranks among the top 15 non-wovens manufacturers in the world.
The company plans to use its Stuttgart presence to highlight its lightweight absorber non-wovens for
interior applications, designed to reduce engine and driving noise in a variety of applications.
Billed as highly efficient and completely odour neutral, the fabrics help keep the interior at a
comfortable temperature, using anthracite-coloured versions for visible areas.
Sandler’s product range includes self-supporting, lightweight and temperature-stable non-wovens
for moulded parts, which the company says offer high mechanical stability and contour precision as
well as high acoustic efficiency; they also allow very deep mouldings.

EU investment for advanced sustainable polymer technology development
UK-based technical compounder Luxus, as part of a consortium with Jaguar Land Rover, has secured
a €1.4m investment co-funded by the Eco-innovation initiative of the European Union.
Automotive Interiors Expo exhibitor Luxus aims to commercialise its Hycolene range of lightweight
polypropylene (PP) compounds with up to 60% recycled content to target Europe’s auto interior trim
market.
The company says this investment will significantly boost the sales potential for Luxus’s lightweight
PP range, on show at the expo, and will enable the automotive industry to increase its use of
recycled-content polymers to satisfy ELV and emissions targets.
Luxus will be collaborating on this project with twin screw manufacturer Coperion to help with
complex processing, Tier 1 moulding supplier IAC for materials trials, and Jaguar Land Rover. The
auto manufacturer will be providing end-user guidance on the project to ensure the technical
requirements are met, allowing exploitation of this technology in future applications.
Since January 2015 Europe’s auto industry has been required to reuse and recycle 85% of the
vehicle’s weight. At the same time the performance requirements for car interior trims are steadily
increasing too. Improved scratch resistance for a high-quality finish, plus greater stiffness and a
lower weight per part are criteria increasingly demanded.
Luxus project manager, Dr Christel Croft, comments, “We’re pleased that the commercial potential
of our Hycolene range has been recognised by the EU. This investment will enable us to effectively
make a fundamental step change in our technology as we aim to replace our filled compounds with
next-generation reinforcing additives.”

New RIM coating systems
RIM Casting lacquer systems from Automotive Interiors Expo exhibitor Votteler will be brought to the
market under the new brand name PURIFLOW.
PURIFLOW will be showcased at this year’s Stuttgart event, and Votteler says the system has been
designed to coat high-quality real wood trims, with its casting lacquers formed of two components:
solvent-free, aliphatic polyurethanes, which are processed free of bubbles in high-pressure casting
plants, to create highly transparent surfaces, giving an impressive depth effect.
The new coating range, tested according to VDA-278, is near emission free, meeting the stringent
requirements of the automotive and consumer goods industries and setting standards for thermal and
UV resistance.
Votteler says the PURIFLOW range is suitable for a broad spectrum of applications, and is built on a
modular system, suitable for light-conducting functions alongside capacitive sensors due to lacquers’
transparency.

Sheet metal specialist
First-time exhibitor Mario Fernando Group plans to highlight its metal sheeting capabilities at this
year’s Automotive Interiors Expo.
Specialist in cold deformation of metal sheets, Mario Fernando offers planning and construction of
moulds for cold deformation of metal sheets, including drawing, deep drawing, bending, trimming,
blanking and the total manufacture of the product.
The company is skilled in stainless steel and aluminium processing, but also has experience with a
broad range of metals for automotive applications, including brass, copper, titanium and zinc. It has
worked with a range of Tier 1 suppliers and OEMs.

Complete car prototyping
Automotive Interiors Expo exhibitor Skorpion Engineering will use its presence in Stuttgart to
highlight its vast, complete car prototyping capabilities.
Using integrated additives such as FDM, stereolithography, SLS and Objet, and subtractive
technologies such as milling, Skorpion aims to become a global specialist for rapid car development.
Skorpion’s recent portfolio features the Chevrolet Niva concept project, including a pre-series of 25
specimens that were used during the design and aesthetic process and to carry out crash tests.
The company’s technologies involved in this project include monolithic stereolithography (2,000 x
1,000 x 1,000mm) for dashboard, bumpers and other parts, vacuum casting of 25 replicas, and a
range of finishings.
Skorpion engineers will be on hand in Stuttgart to offer advice on how the company can provide
personal manufacturing during pre-production, from painting to the coating of wood or carbon, to
the most up-to-date metal plating, with a wide range of finishes to obtain products that can meet
any marketing or testing needs either functional or aesthetic.
