Married Four Times
The local news station was interviewing an 80-year-old lady because she had just gotten married for the fourth time.
The interviewer asked her questions about her life, about what it felt like to be marrying again at 80, and then about her
new husband's occupation..
"He's a funeral director," she answered.
"Interesting," the newsman thought... He then asked her if she wouldn't mind telling him a little about her first three
husbands and what they did for a living.
She paused for a few moments, needing time to reflect on all those years. After a short time, a smile came to her face and
she answered proudly, explaining that she had first married a banker when she was in her 20's, then a circus
ringmaster when in her 40's, and a preacher when in her 60's, and now - in her 80's - a funeral director.
The interviewer looked at her, quite astonished, and asked why she had married four men with such diverse careers.
-She smiled and explained, "I married one for the money, two for the show, three to get ready, and four to go."

KIBITZING RULES ...
WHEN CAN YOU KIBITZ IN THE PLAYING ROOMS?
You will be able to kibitz at any of the tables during this event. However, except in the Open Room during the Round
Robin, you will be subject to the following regulations:
Kibitzers may enter the room ONLY at the start of play for a segment. Once play has started, the room will be closed.
A kibitzer who leaves the room may not return until the start of the next session.
Cell phones and other electronic devices are not allowed in the playing rooms, even if they are turned off. Any kibitzer
who is found with a cell phone will be evicted and not allowed to kibitz during the remainder of the tournament.
When a match is being shown on BBO Vugraph, no kibitzer may sit on the same side of the table as the Vugraph
operator.
SCREENS
All of the Senior USBC is played with screens. If you've never kibitzed at a table with screens before, you need to know
that it is quite different from kibitzing at a regular table. You need to be seated at an "open" corner of the table (not next
to the screen) in order to see much, and once there are 4 kibitzers at a table it will be very hard for additional kibitzers
to see.
USBF KIBITZING RULES
The USBF General Conditions of Contest contain specific rules about kibitzers. They are designed to promote security
at the tournament and are set forth in the conditions of contest section labeled "Security." They are:
a.
During any use of duplicated boards across multiple matches, Kibitzers must select one table for kibitzing and
may not move to any other table during a session or segment.
b.
Kibitzers may not speak with players, must watch only one hand at a time, may not sit in such a position as to see
more than one hand at a time, may not sit in such a position as to see a computer screen in use for Internet broadcast,
must check communication devices with the Director, cannot call attention to irregularities other than a board being
placed incorrectly on the table (arrow positioning), but may serve as witnesses to a possible irregularity.
c.
Kibitzers must enter the playing room before play commences. Kibitzers are required to remain until the segment
of play is completed at the table they are watching or to leave the playing area entirely. Kibitzers are expected to abide
by the same rules as the players regarding leaving the room (e.g. be escorted to the restroom).
d.
Except as expressly provided in these conditions and appendices, NPC’s shall be subject to the WBF General
Conditions, Section 17.
e.
No one other than the Internet broadcast personnel and Tournament Directors may watch any computer screen or
any other mechanism for enabling the Internet broadcast at any time in either the Closed or the Open Room.
f.
These rules may be revised in specific instances by the DICs for the orderly running of the event.
A little old man shuffled slowly into an ice cream parlor and pulled himself slowly, painfully, up onto a stool… After
catching his breath, he ordered a banana split. The waitress asked kindly, 'Crushed nuts?' 'No,' he replied, 'Arthritis.'
Two elderly women were eating breakfast in a restaurant one morning. Ethel noticed something funny about Mabel's
ear and she said,
'"Mabel, did you know you've got a suppository in your left ear? " Mabel answered, "I have a suppository?" She pulled it
out and stared at it.
Then she said, "Ethel, I'm glad you saw this thing. Now I think I know where my hearing aid is."

Age is important only if you're cheese or wine.
Of all my husband's relatives, I like me best.
Once over the hill, you pick up speed.
I used to get lost in the shuffle; now I just shuffle along with the lost.
The twinkle in your eye is only the reflection of the sun on your bifocals.
You’re so old you confuse having a clear conscience with having a bad memory.
"Doctor, I get heartburn every time I eat birthday cake." “Next time, take off the candles."
The older I get, the better I was.
Seen it all, done it all, can't remember most of it.
I'm on a 30-day diet. So far I've lost 15 days.
5
Your secrets are safe with your friends because they can't remember
them either.
Travelling to see historical sites isn't as much fun when many of the sites are younger than you are.

Vugraph
The Knockout stages of the 2015 Senior USBC will be covered on BBO Vugraph. We plan to cover 4-8
tables in the Round of 16 and Quarter-finals, all 4 tables in the Semi-finals and both tables in the Finals,
and all of the tables in the USA2 Semi-finals and Finals, as well as some of the Quarter-finals. To watch
the Vugraph online, go to the BBO website where you can either log on directly from your browser, go to
"Vugraph" and choose which table to watch, or download the BBO software to run BBO on your
computer. If you choose the latter approach, after downloading, install the software on your computer, log
on, follow the directions to become a BBO member and you'll be magically transported to the Lobby of the
largest bridge club in the world. Click on the button labeled VUGRAPH and you'll be able to choose which
of the USSBC matches you want to watch.
There will usually be a "yellow" user on BBO called USBF. If you have general questions, please ask
USBF, not one of the hard-working Vugraph Operators, some of whom may not have time to respond to
private messages. Thank you.
Each day's schedule is the same (these are Chicago times; to see the times for your time-zone, go to
the BBO Vugraph schedule site):
10:00 - 12:10: Segment 1
12:20 - 2: 30: Segment 2
3:40
4:00 - 5:50: Segment 3
6:00 - 8:10: Segment 4
Segments 2 and 4 may start a little earlier or later than they are scheduled depending on when segments
1 and 3 end.
In the Round of 16, each match will play a different set of boards. In the Quarterfinal, the matches may
play the same boards or different boards. In the Semi-Finals all of the teams will play the same boards,
but for security reasons, if the matches do not all start at the same time, we will not start the Vugraph
broadcast until all matches have started play.
After a session, you can review the Vugraph action on our Web Vugraphs, which show each hand played
with a link to bidding and play records. Take a look at the events currently available to see what we'll
have for the 2015 Senior USBC. Web Vugraphs are posted within about half an hour of completion of the
Vugraph show.

A solo dice game is played where, on each turn, a normal pair of dice is rolled. The score is calculated by taking the
product, rather than the sum, of the two numbers shown on the dice.
On a particular game, the score for the second roll is five more than the score for the first; the score for the third roll is
six less than that of the second; the score for the fourth roll is eleven more than that of the third; and the score for the
fifth roll is eight less than that of the fourth. What was the score for each of these five throws?
A high school has a strange principal. On the first day, he has his students perform an odd opening day ceremony:
There are one thousand lockers and one thousand students in the school. The principal asks the first student to go to
every locker and open it. Then he has the second student go to every second locker and close it. The third goes to every
third locker and, if it is closed, he opens it, and if it is open, he closes it. The fourth student does this to every fourth
locker, and so on. After the process is completed with the thousandth student, how many lockers are open?
You want to hire a temporary employee for one month. You offer him reasonable wages, but the employee suggests an
alternative. For the first day of work, he will be paid a penny. For the second day, two pennies. For the third day, four
pennies. The salary for each subsequent day will be double the previous day's, until the one month term is over. Ignoring
the legalities of such a situation, would it be a good idea to accept the potential employee's proposal?
Arrange the numbers 1 through 9 on a tic tac toe board such that the numbers in each row, column, and diagonal add
up to 15.
Two trains travel toward each other on the same track, beginning 100 miles apart. One train travels at 40 miles per
hour; the other travels at 60 miles an hour. A bird starts flight at the same location as the faster train, flying at a speed
of 90 miles per hour. When it reaches the slower train, it turns around, flying the other direction at the same speed.
When it reaches the faster train again, it turns around -- and so on. When the trains collide, how far will the bird have
flown?
Since the trains are 100 miles apart, and the trains are traveling toward each other at 40 and 60 mph,
the trains will collide in one hour. The bird will have been flying for an hour at 90 miles per hour at that
point, so the bird will have traveled 90 miles.

Cubs: June 11-14 vs Reds
So the number of open lockers is the number of perfect squares less than or equal to one thousand.
These numbers are one squared, two squared, three squared, four squared, and so on, up to thirty one
squared. (Thirty two squared is greater than one thousand, and therefore out of range.) So the answer is
thirty one.
The only lockers that remain open are perfect squares (1, 4, 9, 16, etc) because they are the only numbers
divisible by an odd number of whole numbers; every factor other than the number's square root is paired
up with another. Thus, these lockers will be "changed" an odd number of times, which means they will be
left open. All the other numbers are divisible by an even number of factors and will consequently end up
closed.

In the Open Room, Woolsey/Stewart did well to bid the slam. They used a “seldom seen in tournament play” (Kit’s words)
convention and it worked like a charm (see above). Of course, it didn’t hurt that the major suit kings were slotted!
Seamon led a diamond. Stewart won the jack with the queen. He cashed the DT and led a club to the king. A heart to the
ten followed, and when that held, Stewart could breathe a little easier. He played the H5 to Seamon’s four and Cayne’s
nine. Cayne played the spade jack. Stewart finessed, and when the queen held, he had twelve tricks. +990
In the Closed Room, Zia and Kamil stopped in game. Like Stewart, Kamil took twelve tricks. +490

As opposed to the hand above where everything lies perfectly for slam, this hand
is less friendly even for game. The heart king and the club A/Q are all offside.
In the Open Room, Cayne led the DK. Woolsey won and pulled two rounds of
trump ending in hand. He finessed the HK. That failed and Seamon cashed two
rounds of high diamonds. With no entires to Cayne’s hand, Seamon took his club
ace for down one. –100
In the Closed Room, the play was the same until Granovetter won his HK. He was trying to defeat the partscore and led a
small diamond from his QJ to dummy’s nine. Zia pulled the last trump and claimed ten tricks. +170

Howie Doing …
Limey Jack …
Gads but you Yanks are at it yet again. This time the
Codgers take the pulpit.
Eight teams survive in USA1.
Two teams are sidelined till two days are done.
Limey Jack is right pumped to bring you all the winners.
Call the punter and put a tenner on these picks. Beware
that the buffoon is also lurking. Howie Dung is quite
potty, you know. He will go left, right, and centre without
actually leaving Paddington Station.
Look at the field. It’s filled with great skill.
Watching the VuGraph will be quite a thrill.
Predicting that Katz has only one life.
Batting heads with this group will cause him much strife.
Of the ten teams entered, eight will play the next
segment. Limey Jack gets it sorted for you here and now.
As always, Howie Dung will pick all favourites but that is
not how it works. Watch Levine or Morse and his mates
stumble out of the gate while two of the bottom dwellers
are granted more days. Of course the greatest player both
here and in the Colonies leads his team to the front
position without breaking a lather.
Heard on the Street that Paul will be fine.
Sidelined with Katz will be Mike Levine.
Good luck to all. You’re all senior winners.
See you tonight at the “early bird dinners!”
Cheers, LJ

In the Closed Room, against 6S, Watson led a third best diamond. Rubin ruffed
and played the king of trump and a trump to the ace. He ruffed a diamond in
hand, led a club to the ace and king, pitching a low heart and ruffed a club in
hand. He played the queen of hearts, covered by the king and ace. Another heart was led to the ten and jack. Liu was
forced to yield a ruff and sluff to Rubin for 12 tricks a making slam.
In the Open Room, against 6NT, Hamman made the neutral lead of the S7. This did not help declarer at all.
cashed all of dummy’s spades. North pitched four diamonds, a club and two hearts; South pitched five diamonds,
and a heart; Dummy pitched two hearts, two diamonds, and a club. At this point, Brady could have played the
hearts with both the king and jack falling to make the slam. Instead, he cashed the ace and king of clubs and
dummy with the diamond king. Hamman won the ace and cashed the club queen.
