The Expert Forum for
Composite Lightweight Construction
3rd International
CFK-Valley Stade Convention
10-11 June 2009, Stadeum Stade
Thermoplastic CFRP, Machining of CFRP,
Application of New Materials & Tooling
Greetings
With the city of Stade the State of Niedersachsen has
one of the largest manufacturing locations for lightweight structures made of carbon-fiber reinforced polymers (CFRP) at its disposal. On the basis of more than
20 years of experience in CFRP production technology, a
Europe-wide leading cluster was created with CFK-Valley Stade. The complementary performance potential
of almost ninety members from industry and research
is systematically and professionally pooled here. Its
members come from Germany and Europe as well as
USA and Japan. The resulting innovation and development force released along the entire value chain leads
to highly dynamic developments within the cluster.
The latest example for this is the ground-breaking ceremony for a CFRP research center unique to Europe,
which is supported by the state of Niedersachsen with
approx. 20 M Euro. Research on manufacturing methods for the mass production of large CFRP components
will begin here mid-2010. Approximately 100 highly
qualified engineers will be setting new standards with
state-of-the-art production technologies in industrial
manufacture.
Large components are particularly important in industries that are essential to Niedersachsen such as the
automotive and commercial vehicle, shipbuilding, wind
turbine and track vehicle construction industries. The
larger a component or product is the more the user can
profit from the advantages CFRP material has to offer,
such as weight reduction for example.
Simultaneous to research work, the training and education program in CFRP lightweight technology will
continue to be expanded. In addition to the dual study
courses for a Bachelor of Engineering (Composites), the
study course for a Master of Science (Composites) will
also be offered in English. We see in this and in today’s
event an important contribution to international cooperation. On this note, we wish all participants a successful run of the event, interesting contacts and a pleasant
stay in Stade.
Dr. Philipp Rösler, Minister for Economics,
Labour and Transport of Niedersachsen
Greetings
The potential of composites resides in their well-known,
various properties that predestine this group of material to many application fields like transportation, wind
energy or mechanical engineering. The diversity of the
properties leads on one hand to highly specific products
and, on the other, to the complexity of the inherent design and manufacturing processes. The annual CFK
Convention, with more than 400 participants, features
50 exhibitors and special lectures that motivate the
audience to discuss the well-defined topics. Therefore the convention is the ideal platform for networking,
sharing of know-how and is a venue for acquiring new
impulses.
Major challenges with regard to the production of composite parts for lightweight structures are, for example,
large and complex shapes, high volume and simplified assembly. These require significant improvements
along the entire process chain. This annual session of
the CFK Convention deals with promising approaches
focusing on thermoplastics, machining, application of
new materials & tooling. Under the awareness that the
promotion of composites solutions undergoes many restrictive criteria, considerable efforts have been made
Composite Innovations Award
to develop innovative solutions. Secondary bonding for
thermosets or welding for thermoplastics are examples of incoming improvements that denote the strong
dependence of the technology upon the material being
selected. As shown by the variety of ongoing research,
thermoplastic composites offer even more advantages
than welding capability. This, in addition to recent findings for machining and laser technologies that fulfil
stringent requirements of CFRP part assembly, surface
treatment and repair in terms of precision and material
integrity are the focus of this conference.
The “Composite Innovations Award” for developments
with a particularly high degree of innovation in CFRP
lightweight construction will be bestowed for the third
time at the CFK-Valley Stade Convention.
I wish all participants interesting contacts and discussions that may lead to new technical solutions and business success.
All firms and institutes participating at the CFK-Valley
Stade Convention are eligible to apply for this grant.
Research and engineering performances that make
particularly innovative contributions to the development
of materials and processes for marketable carbon-fiber
reinforced composite structures are included in the
evaluation process.
Prof. Dr.-Ing. Axel Herrmann
Chairman Steering Board CFK-Valley Stade e.V.
The “Composite Innovations Award” is endowed with
a Master’s grant for the new “Composite Materials/
Composites” Master’s course of studies valued at
18,000 Euro. The award is endowed by the Ministry of Economics, Labour and Transport of the State of Niedersachsen, CFK-Valley Stade e.V. and by the Private University
of Applied Sciences Göttingen (PFH Göttingen).
The laureate will be determined by CFK-Valley Stade e. V.
steering board and a representative of the government of
Niedersachsen. The deadline for entries is 29 May 2009.
Further information and application forms can be
found on the Internet at www.cfk-valley.com/award

Stade has a lot to offer. No wonder, with a history of
over a thousand years! History that can be seen not
only in museums, but also living history that can be
experienced in the beautifully renovated old town.
Stade, the town on the Schwinge, has continued to develop as a cultural center of the Elbe-Weser Triangle
since the completion of the STADEUM culture and congress center in 1989.
The secret of the avant-garde building‘s success is the
effective synthesis of atmosphere, experience, organisation, and engineering.
