Kuratoriumssitzung
Das Kuratorium der beiden Martinsrieder MPIs
ist ein Gremium aus einflussreichen Mitgliedern aus Politik, Wirtschaft, Wissenschaft und
Medien. Im Mai trafen sich die Mitglieder mit
der Leitung der Institute und der Max-PlanckGesellschaft (MPG), um sich über die Entwicklungen an den Instituten sowie der MPG
zu informieren. Das Gremium kann die Institute in sozialen und wissenschaftspolitischen
Belangen beraten. Themen der Sitzung 2012
waren die Haushaltspläne der MPG und die
Entwicklung des Standortes Martinsried. Zudem informierten die Direktoren Elena Conti
und Tobias Bonhoeffer über personelle und
strukturelle Neuerungen an den Instituten.
Herwig Baier, neuer Direktor am MPIN, und
MPIB-Gruppenleiter Carsten Grashoff stellten
ihre Forschungsarbeiten vor.
Meeting of the Board of Trustees
The joint Board of Trustees of the MPIs in
Martinsried is a committee consisting of influential experts in the fields of politics, economy, science and media. In May, they met
to inform themselves about the latest developments at the Institutes and inside the
Max Planck Society. The trustees can advise
the Institutes in social issues and matters regarding science politics. Main topics of the
meeting 2012 were the budget plans of the
Max Planck Society and the development
of the campus Martinsried. In addition, the
Directors Elena Conti and Tobias Bonhoeffer
informed about staff and structural changes
at the Institutes. Furthermore, Herwig Baier,
new Director at the MPIN, and MPIB group
leader Carsten Grashoff presented their research topics.

Kronthaler, Secretary General of the MPS.

Institutstag
Am Institutstag bekommen die Mitarbeiter
des MPI für Biochemie jedes Jahr die Möglichkeit, andere MPIB-Forschungsgruppen
am Institut und ihre Arbeit kennenzulernen.
Am Ende des diesjährigen Tages am 3. Mai
waren sieben lächelnde Gewinner zu beglückwünschen: vier Doktoranden und drei
PostDocs wurden mit dem „MPIB Junior
Research Award 2012“ und einem Preisgeld
von je 800 Euro für herausragende Publikationen ausgezeichnet. In Kurzvorträgen stellten
sie rund 200 MPIB-Mitarbeitern ihre wissenschaftlichen Arbeiten vor. Das Rahmenprogramm bildeten Vorträge von Institutsdirektor
Reinhard Fässler und Forschungsgruppenleiter Thomas Wollert. Kaffee und Kuchen am
Nachmittag und ein Snackbuffet am Abend
luden zum lockeren Gespräch ein.

Institute´s Day
Every year, the Institute´s Day offers the employees of the MPI of Biochemistry the possibility to get to know other research groups
of the Institute and their field of work. At the
end of this year´s Institute´s Day on May 3,
seven smiling winners were congratulated
on their achievements: four doctoral students and three PostDocs were awarded the
“MPIB Junior Research Award 2012“ for outstanding publications including a prize money
of 800 Euros each. They introduced their scientific results in short presentations to about
200 MPIB employees. These were framed
by lectures given by Director Reinhard Fässler and research group leader Thomas Wollert. Coffee and cake in the afternoon and a
snack buffet in the evening created a casual
atmosphere for relaxed conversations.

Girls‘ Day
Am 26. April durften 19 Mädchen der siebten
bis neunten Klasse beim Girls´ Day der Martinsrieder MPIs den Mikrokosmos Forschungsinstitut genauer unter die Lupe nehmen. Wie arbeitet ein Wissenschaftler? An welchen Themen
forschen die Institute? Arbeiten an den MPIs
nur Forscher oder gibt es noch weitere Karrieremöglichkeiten? Die Mädchen konnten einen
Blick hinter die Kulissen werfen und Forschung
hautnah erleben. Sie erhielten Einblicke in die
Berufsfelder Elektrotechnikerin, Feinwerkmechanikerin, Tierpflegerin für Forschung und Klinik, Wissenschaftlerin, Biologielaborantin/Technische Assistentin und Mediengestalterin. Am
Ende des Tages durften sie ein ganz besonderes
Andenken mit nach Hause nehmen: ihre eigene
DNA isoliert aus der Mundschleimhaut.

On April 26, 19 girls between 13 and 16 years were invited to take a close look at the
microcosm of a research institute on this
year´s Girls‘ Day of the MPIs in Martinsried.
How does a scientist proceed in his work?
What are the main research areas of the
Institutes? Which career opportunities are
offered at the Institutes besides scientific
ones? The girls were able to take a look behind the scenes and get into close contact
with scientific research. They were given
insights into different occupational fields:
electric technician, precision mechanic, animalkeeper for research and clinic, scientist,
biological lab assistant and digital media designer. At the end of the day they could take
home a very special souvenir: their own
DNA - isolated from oral mucosa.

W-Seminar
Krebs ist die zweithäufigste Todesursache in
Deutschland und damit ein wichtiges Thema.
Acht Schülerinnen und Schüler bekamen im
April erstmals die Möglichkeit, sich im neuen W-Seminar der Martinsrieder MPIs mit
den Tücken dieser Krankheit zu beschäftigen.
Das Wissenschaftspropädeutische-Seminar
(W-Seminar) ersetzt die frühere Facharbeit,
die durch die Umstrukturierung des Leistungskurssystems in Bayern wegfiel. Die
Jugendlichen konnten im neuen W-Seminar
praktische Laborerfahrungen außerhalb der
Schule sammeln. Anhand eines aktuellen
Forschungsprojektes der Abteilung von Axel
Ullrich setzten sie sich mit folgenden Fragen
auseinander: Wie entsteht Krebs und warum
ist er so gefährlich? Welche Möglichkeiten
gibt es, die Krankheit zu bekämpfen?
W-Seminar
Cancer is the second most frequent cause of
death in Germany - making it a serious and
important topic. In April, eight pupils got the
chance to deal with the perniciousness of
this disease in the first “W-Seminar“ of the
MPIs in Martinsried. The science-propaedeutic seminar (“W-Seminar“) has replaced the
former “Facharbeit“ at school in the course of
restructuring the Bavarian advanced course
system. In the new “W-Seminar“ the teenagers obtained practical experience in the laboratory beyond the daily school routine. On
the basis of a current research project of the
department of Axel Ullrich they dealt with
the following questions: How does cancer
develop and why is it so dangerous? Which
options exist to fight this disease?

Hans Thoenen, 1928 – 2012
Hans Thoenen, ehemaliger Direktor am MPI
für Neurobiologie und geschätzter Kollege,
starb am 23. Juni nach langer Krankheit.
Hans Thoenen beschäftigte sich mit dem Vorkommen und den Wirkmechanismen von Nervenwachstumsfaktoren. Seine Pionierarbeiten
trugen maßgeblich zur Erschließung dieses
damals noch ganz neuen Forschungsgebietes
bei. Er legte im wahrsten Sinne des Wortes
den Grundstein für das MPIN und erweiterte
dessen Forschungsstruktur, indem er neben
den von Direktoren geleiteten Abteilungen
auch unabhängige Nachwuchsgruppen einführte. Seine große Kompetenz als Neurobiologe, seine Begeisterungsfähigkeit für neue
Ideen und seine Fähigkeit Andere zu inspirieren, machten Hans Thoenen zu einem besonderen Menschen. Wir werden ihn vermissen.

Hans Thoenen, 1928 – 2012
On June 23, Hans Thoenen, former Director
at the MPI of Neurobiology and esteemed
colleague, passed away after a long illness.
With his pioneer work in the field of the existence and working mechanisms of neurotrophic factors, he made a major contribution to
the development of this, in those days completely new, research area. Hans Thoenen
literally set the cornerstone for the Martinsried Institute. He also broke fresh ground
by introducing independent research groups
alongside the traditional departments led by
directors. His great competence as a neurobiologist, his enthusiasm for new ideas and
his talent to inspire others made Hans Thoenen a very special person. He will indeed be
missed.

Muster eines molekularen Flickenteppichs
Als Schaltstelle zwischen Zelle und Umwelt erfüllt die Zellmembran eine Vielzahl lebenswichtiger Funktionen. Wissenschaftler um den Forschungsgruppenleiter Roland WedlichSöldner haben jetzt erstmals die molekulare Struktur der aus
Fetten und Proteinen aufgebauten Grenzschicht umfassend
analysiert und eine präzise Ordnung nachgewiesen: Bei Hefezellen besteht die gesamte Membran aus sogenannten Domänen, die jeweils eine einzelne oder einige wenige Proteinsorten enthalten. Wird ein Protein in eine fremde Domäne
versetzt, kann es sogar seine Funktion verlieren. Die Arbeit,
die im Journal Nature Cell Biology erschien, zeigt die Membran als eine Art molekularen Flickenteppich und könnte helfen,
grundlegende Vorgänge in der Zelle besser zu verstehen.
Pattern of a Molecular Patchwork Quilt
As the interface between the cell and its environment, the
cell membrane, which consists of fats and proteins, fulfils a
variety of vital functions. Scientists around group leader Roland Wedlich-Söldner have performed the first comprehensive
analysis of the molecular structure of this boundary layer, and
revealed precisely how it is organised. In yeast cells, the entire membrane is made up of independent domains, each containing just one or a few protein types. If a protein is relocated
to an inappropriate domain, it may even fail to function. The
results show that the membrane is a kind of patchwork quilt
and could help to gain a better understanding of basic cellular
processes. The study was published in the journal Nature Cell
Biology.

Neues Enzym des Immunsystems entdeckt
Neutrophile Granulozyten sind wichtige Schutztruppen des Immunsystems. Dringen krankmachende Bakterien in den Körper
ein, sind sie als Erste vor Ort, um über Signalstoffe weitere Immunzellen zu mobilisieren und die Gefahr einzudämmen. Dazu
geben sie Serinproteasen ab – Enzyme, die andere Proteine
zerschneiden und Signalmoleküle dadurch aktivieren können.
Forscher um Dieter Jenne haben nun eine neue Serinprotease
entdeckt: die Neutrophilen-Serinprotease 4, kurz NSP4. Stammesgeschichtlich ist NSP4 unter den vier bekannten Neutrophilen-Serinproteasen die älteste: Wie die Forscher anhand von
Gensequenzen zeigten, hat sich NSP4 von den Knochenfischen
bis hin zum Menschen über viele Millionen Jahre kaum verändert. Das Enzym könnte außerdem einen neuen Ansatzpunkt
für die Behandlung von Krankheiten bieten, bei denen das Immunsystem überaktiv ist, zum Beispiel rheumatoider Arthritis.
Discovery of a New Enzyme of the Immune System
Neutrophil granulocytes comprise important defences for
the immune system. When pathogenic bacteria penetrate
the body, they are the first on the scene to mobilise other
immune cells via signal molecules, thereby containing the
risk. To do this, they release serine proteases – enzymes that
cut up other proteins to activate signal molecules. Scientists
working with Dieter Jenne have now discovered a new serine protease: neutrophil serine protease 4, shortly NSP4. In
terms of evolutionary history, NSP4 is the oldest of the four
known neutrophil serine proteases. Using gene sequences,
researchers have shown that the enzyme has hardly changed
through many millions of years of evolution from bony fish
to humans. This enzyme could provide a new target for the
treatment of diseases that cause the immune system to be
overactive, such as rheumatoid arthritis.

Innenleben eines Giganten
Werden Proteine in der Zelle nicht fehlerfrei und kontrolliert abgebaut, können Krankheiten wie Krebs oder Alzheimer entstehen. Wissenschaftler um Wolfgang Baumeister haben jetzt den
Aufbau und die Funktionsweise einer wichtigen Komponente
der zellulären Abbau-Maschinerie des Menschen entschlüsselt: die Tripeptidyl-Peptidase II (TPPII). Soll eine Proteinkette
abgebaut werden, so wird das Protein zuerst entfaltet und in
kürzere Stücke, so genannte Peptide, zerschnitten. Die weitere
Zerkleinerung übernimmt unter anderem TPPII. Sie zerlegt die
Peptide in noch kleinere Teile, die nach weiteren Schritten für
die Bildung neuer Proteine recycelt werden können. „Die Aufklärung der Struktur von TPPII ist ein wichtiger Meilenstein, um
die komplexe Aktivierung und Kontrolle des Proteinabbaus zu
verstehen“, so Beate Rockel, Forscherin am MPIB. Die Ergebnisse der Forscher erschienen im Journal Structure.
The Inner Life of a Giant
Uncontrolled or inaccurate degradation of cellular proteins can
lead to diseases like cancer or Alzheimer’s disease. Scientists
in the research department of Wolfgang Baumeister have now
uncovered the structure and the operating mechanism of an
important component of the human cellular degradation machinery, tripeptidyl peptidase II (TPPII). When a protein chain
has to be degraded, it is first unfolded and then cleaved into
shorter pieces, so-called peptides. TPPII is one of the factors
that take over further degradation. It chops the peptides into
even smaller bits which, after some additional steps, can be recycled for the assembly of new proteins. “Decoding the structure of TPPII is a crucial milestone towards understanding the
complex activation and control of protein degradation”, says
Beate Rockel, scientist at the MPIB. The results of the study
have now been published in the journal Structure.

Matthias Mann erhält Körber-Preis
Für seine zukunftsträchtigen Arbeiten im Bereich der Proteomforschung erhält der MPIB-Direktor Matthias Mann den Körber-Preis
für die Europäische Wissenschaft 2012. Die Auszeichnung wird
am 7. September in Hamburg von der Körber-Stiftung verliehen
und beinhaltet ein Preisgeld von 750.000 €. Vor allem Forschungsprojekte mit hohem Anwendungspotenzial aus den Bereichen
Life und Physical Sciences werden jährlich ausgewählt. 2006 hatte bereits MPIB-Direktor F.-Ulrich Hartl den Preis erhalten.
Matthias Mann Receives Körber Prize
For his pioneer work in proteomic research, the MPIB-Director
Matthias Mann receives the Körber European Science Prize
2012. On September 7, 2012, the Körber Foundation awards
scientists in Europe the prize which comes with 750,000 € prize money. The ceremony will take place in Hamburg. Especially
projects in life and physical science with high application potential are chosen. In the year 2006, F.-Ulrich Hartl, also Director at
the MPIB, received this award.
Winfried Denk gewinnt Kavli-Preis
Winfried Denk, seit 2011 Direktor am MPI für Neurobiologie,
gewinnt den Kavli-Preis für Neurowissenschaften. Er teilt sich
das Preisgeld (1 Million US-Dollar) mit Cornelia Isabella Bargmann (Rockefeller University, USA) and Ann M. Graybiel (MIT,
USA). Der Preis würdigt alle zwei Jahre Wissenschaftler für ihre
Forschung in den Bereichen der Astrophysik, Nano- und Neurowissenschaften. Die Ehrung wird am 4. September 2012 in Oslo
von König Harald überreicht.
Winfried Denk Receives Kavli Prize
Winfried Denk, Director at the MPI of Neurobiology since
2011, wins the Kavli Prize in Neuroscience. He shares the prize money of 1 million US dollar with Cornelia Isabella Bargmann (Rockefeller University, USA) and Ann M. Graybiel (MIT,
USA). The award is given every second year to outstanding
scientists in three research fields: astrophysics, nano- and
neuroscience. The prizes will be presented by his Majesty
King Harald on September 4, 2012, in Oslo.

Franz-Ulrich Hartl gewinnt Shaw-Preis
F.-Ulrich Hartl, Direktor am MPI für Biochemie, wird für seine
Forschung zur Faltung von Proteinen gemeinsam mit Professor
Arthur L. Horwich (Yale Universität, USA) mit dem Shaw Prize
in Life Science and Medicine 2012 ausgezeichnet. Die Ehrung
ist mit einem Preisgeld von einer Million US-Dollar (entspricht
rund 795.000 €) verbunden und wird am 17. September 2012
von der Shaw Prize Foundation überreicht.
Franz-Ulrich Hartl Receives Shaw Prize
Together with Arthur L. Horwich (Yale University, USA),
Franz-Ulrich Hartl, Director at the MPI of Biochemistry, will
be awarded the 2012 Shaw Prize in Life Science and Medicine for his research on protein folding. The prize comes with a
shared 1 million US-dollar honorarium (about 795,000 €) and
will be awarded by the Shaw Prize Foundation on September
17, 2012.

Dienstjubiläum
Günther Schafberger aus der Fahrbereitschaft feierte am 1.
Juni 2012 sein 25-jähriges Dienstjubiläum.
Das Institut gratuliert ihm zu seinem Jubiläum, dankt ihm für
die gute, vertrauensvolle Zusammenarbeit und seine Fahrdienste für beide Institute auf dem Campus. Wir wünschen
ihm weiterhin viel Erfolg und Freude an seiner Arbeit.

On June 1, Günther Schafberger celebrated his 25th anniversary of employment. He is working in the Driver Service.
The Institute congratulates him on his jubilee and thanks him
for his driver services as well as a good and trustful collaboration with both Institutes on the campus. We wish him ongoing
success and pleasure in his work!
Wahlen
Jörg Tittor wurde im Mai 2012 für weitere drei Jahre zum Ombudsmann am MPIB und zum Vertreter der wissenschaftlichen
Mitarbeiter des MPIB in die Biologisch-Medizinischen Sektion des Wissenschaftlichen Rats der Max-Planck-Gesellschaft
gewählt. Als Ombudsmann berät er vertraulich und vermittelt
in Konfliktfällen zur Sicherung der „Grundsätze guter wissenschaftlicher Praxis“. Die Sektion bereitet wichtige Entscheidungen für die wissenschaftliche Ausrichtung und Entwicklung der
MPIs und für die Berufung von Direktoren vor.
Elections
In May 2012, Jörg Tittor was elected as ombudsman of the
MPIB and as the Institute´s scientific staff representative in the
biomedical section of the Scientific Council of the Max Planck
Society for additional three years. As elected ombudsman, he
gives confidential advice and acts as a mediator in scientific
disputes concerning the adherence to the `Rules of Good Scientific Practice´. The section initiates important decisions such
as the scientific development of MPIs and the selection of new
directors.

Auf Wiedersehen
Good-bye
Markus Klement aus der Zentralwerkstatt hat das Institut verlassen. Nach fast zehn Jahren am MPIB wird er jetzt eine permanente Stelle am neuen MPI in Florida antreten. Er war bereits seit zwei Jahren freigestellt, um dort eine mechanische
Werkstatt aufzubauen.
Wir danken ihm für seine Dienste und wünschen ihm für seine
neuen Aufgaben alles Gute und viel Erfolg!
Markus Klement from the Central Workshop has left the Institute. After nearly ten years at the MPIB, he will start a permanent position at the new MPI in Florida. He has already been
exempt from work at the MPIB for two years to build up a new
mechanical workshop in Florida.
We thank him for his commitment to the Institute and wish
him all the best for his new tasks!
Bruno Krinninger, Leiter des Serviceteams im Technischen Betrieb und stellvertretender Leiter des Technischen Betriebes,
hat am 11. Mai 2012 das Institut verlassen und eine Stelle in
der Pharmaindustrie angenommen. Bruno Krinninger war seit
1. Juni 2011 am MPIB tätig.
Bruno Krinninger, leader of the service team of the General
Technical Service and deputy leader of the General Technical
Service has left the Institute on May 11, 2012, to start a new
position in the pharmaceutical industry. Bruno Krinninger had
been working at the Institute since June 1, 2011.
Wir bedanken uns bei ihm für seine Arbeit und wünschen ihm
weiterhin viel Erfolg!

Gehaltserhöhung
Die aktuelle TVöD-Tariferhöhung wird im Juni an die Mitarbeiter ausgezahlt. Die Löhne der Tarifbeschäftigten steigen insgesamt um 6,3% (ab 1. März 2012 um 3,5%, ab 1. Januar 2013
um weitere 1,4% und ab 1. August 2013 um 1,4%). Auch die
Auszubildenden nach TVAöD bekommen ab 1. März 2012 einen Festbetrag von 50 Euro mehr und ab 1. August 2013 weitere 40 Euro.
Raise of Salary
The actual raise of salary recently agreed upon will be paid
in June. The salaries of the employees in the tariff contract
of public employees will increase up to 6.3% (3.5% from
March 1, 2012, plus 1.4% from January 1, 2013 and additional 1.4% from August 1, 2013). Furthermore, the trainees in
the TVAöD contract will receive a fixed amount of 50 Euros
more starting from March 1, 2012 and additional 40 Euros as
from August 1, 2013.
Entscheidung über LOB
Die neuen Regelungen zur Leistungsorientierten Bezahlung
(LOB) stehen kurz vor ihrem Abschluss. Der LOB-Ausschuss
setzt sich aus Vertretern der Wissenschaft, der Verwaltung und
dem Betriebsrat zusammen und hat bisher über 20 Mal getagt.
Voraussichtlich werden die Vereinbarungen bis Ende Juni beschlossen sein. Um den Mitarbeitern am Institut die Neuerungen zu erläutern, ist eine Informationsveranstaltung geplant.
Decision regarding LOB
The new regulations concerning an efficiency oriented payment (LOB) set up by the LOB-committee are well under way.
The committee is composed of representatives of science, administra- tion and the employee´s council and so far has met
more than 20 times. Presumably, the final decision will be made
by the end of June. To explain the changes to the employees of
the Institute, an informative meeting is planned.

Neue Ortsmitte für Martinsried
Die Gemeinde Martinsried hat beschlossen,
ihre Ortsmitte neu zu gestalten. Bei der Planung des Projekts möchte Bürgermeisterin
Annemarie Detsch die Bewohner von Martinsried und den umliegenden Campus mit einbeziehen. In einer ersten öffentlichen Veranstaltung diskutierten engagierte Bürger die zuvor
per Fragebogen gesammelten Ideen mit der
Gemeinde. Nach weiteren Treffen stellen am
5. Juli vier Teams aus Architekten und Landschaftsplanern ihre fertigen Entwürfe im großen Hörsaal des Biozentrums der LMU aus.
Auch hier sind wieder die Bürger gefragt: Sie
dürfen Empfehlungen an den Gemeinderat
abgeben, welcher am Ende die Entscheidung
für einen Entwurf trifft. Das Stadtplanungsbüro Scheuvens & Wachten (Dortmund und
Wien) steuert den Ortsentwicklungsprozess.
New Centre for Martinsried
The municipality of Martinsried has decided
to restructure their town centre. Mayoress
Annemarie Detsch wants to involve the residents of Martinsried and the surrounding
campus in the planning process. In a first
public event, interested citizens and the local council discussed ideas which had been
previously collected in a questionnaire. After
further meetings, four teams of architects
and landscape designers will exhibit their final designs in the big lecture hall of the LMU
Biocenter. Yet again the public´s opinion will
be requested: the citizens communicate
their favorites to the council, which will make
the final decision. The City Planning Office
Scheuvens & Wachten (Dortmund and Vienna) is responsible for the local development
process.

Porträt
Matthias Mann, Direktor am MPIB, bekam den Louis-Jeantet
Preis am 19. April in Genf verliehen. Aus diesem Grund hat die
Louis-Jeantet Stiftung ein 20-minütiges Filmporträt über den
Wissenschaftler produziert. Darin sprechen Mann und seine
Mitarbeiter über ihre Forschungsarbeiten und der Preisträger
gewährt Einblicke in sein Privatleben. Das Video können Sie sich
auf der Internetseite der Stiftung ansehen.
Portrait
Matthias Mann, Director at the MPIB, has received the LouisJeantet Prize on April 19 in Geneva. The Louis-Jeantet Froundation has produced a 20 minutes movie portrait of the scientist for this occasion. In the documentation, Mann and his
colleagues talk about their research, and the prize winner also
allows an insight into his private life. You can watch the video
on the webpage of the foundation.
Wie Synapsen funken
Auch Tobias Bonhoeffer, Direktor am MPIN, bekam Besuch von
einem Filmteam. Die Max-Planck-Gesellschaft stellt die Arbeit
des Forschers in einem Kurzfilm mit dem Titel „Wie Synapsen
funken“ vor. Darin wird erklärt, wie der Mensch lernt und das
Gehirn die zahlreichen Eindrücke im Alltag verarbeitet. Das Video ist auf der Website der Abteilung freigeschaltet.
How Synapses Communicate
Tobias Bonhoeffer, Director at the MPIN, was also visited by
a film crew. The Max Planck Society introduced his work in a
short film with the title “How synapses communicate“.The movie illustrates, how learning processes work and how the brain
handles the many impressions in everyday life. The video has
been released on the department´s website.

The library now has a selection of books on project management, for example “Internationales Projektmanagement – Interkulturelle Zusammenarbeit in der Praxis“ and “Getting to
Yes: Negotiating Agreement Without Giving In“. You can find
these books in the classification group ZE. Have fun reading
them and find inspiration to improve your own project strategies.

Vom Krimi, über romantischen Erzählungen bis hin zu Klassikern: im Buchclub finden Sie mit Sicherheit das Richtige. Im Regal stehen den Besuchern circa 300 Bücher in verschiedenen
Sprachen, gesponsert von Mitarbeitern des MPIB und MPIN,
zur Verfügung. Nehmen Sie sich einfach ein Buch. Wenn Sie
es ausgelesen haben, bringen Sie es zurück oder spenden ein
anderes Buch.

Detective stories, love stories, classics: you can find them all
in the book club. There are around 300 books in various languages, donated by members of the MPIB und MPIN. Read a book

Kunst im Foyer
Von Juli bis September 2012 wird der Künstler Timothé Kodjou
Honkou seine Werke im Foyer der Martinsrieder MPIs präsentieren.
Die Ausstellung mit dem Thema „Spirit of Africa“ ist von 23. Juli
bis 10. September 2012 täglich von 9:00 bis 19:00 Uhr geöffnet.
Die Vernissage findet am 26. Juli 2012 um 18:00 Uhr statt.
Die aktuelle Ausstellung „Sehr große und ganz kleine Formate“ des Malers Max-Wolfgang Weber ist noch bis 20. Juli 2012
täglich von 9:00 bis 19:00 Uhr geöffnet. Werke von ihm wurden bereits von der Stadt München, den Bayerischen Staatsgemäldesammlungen und der DB angekauft.
Art at the Entrance Hall
From July to September 2012, the artist Timothé Kodjou Honkou is going to present his work in the entrance hall of the
MPIs in Martinsried. The exhibition with the topic “Spirit of
Africa“ is open daily from July 23 until September 10, 2012,
from 9:00 am to 7:00 pm. The vernissage is going to take
place on July 26, 2012 at 6:00 pm.
The current exhibition “Very large and very little formats“
by the painter Max-Wolfgang Weber is open daily from 9:00
am to 7:00 pm until July 20, 2012. His pictures were already
bought by the City Munich, the Bavarian State Painting Collections and the DB.

Dorffest Martinsried
Am 22. Juli werden die beiden MPIs, das IZB und das Biozentrum der LMU wieder mit einem gemeinsamen CampusStand auf dem Martinsrieder Dorffest vertreten sein. Alle
zwei Jahre lädt der Miteinander e.V. Martinsried Bürger und
Campusnachbarn zu dieser Veranstaltung ein. Mit „Wissenschaft zum Anfassen“ präsentieren sich die MPIs den Besuchern, die dort selbst kleine Experimente durchführen können. Alle Interessierten sind herzlich willkommen am 22. Juli
den Campus-Stand zu besuchen!
Village Festival in Martinsried
On July 22, the two MPIs, the IZB and the Biocenter of
the LMU will represent the campus at the Village Festival in
Martinsried with a joint tent. Every second year, the “Miteinander e.V. Martinsried“ invites citizens and neighbors of
the campus to this event. At the MPIs‘ stand, visitors can
get in touch with science by performing small experiments.
All interested people are cordially invited to visit the campus
tent on July 22!

Tag der offenen Tür
Am 10.11.2012 öffnen wieder die beiden Martinsrieder
Max-Planck-Institute ihre Türen für die Öffentlichkeit. Große
und kleine Besucher können am „Tag der offenen Tür“ einen
Blick hinter die Kulissen der Forschungsinstitute werfen. Im
„MaxLab“ dürfen Interessierte selbst an der Laborbank stehen. Vorträge und Führungen durch die verschiedenen Forschungs- und Servicegruppen der Institute geben einen guten Eindruck, wie Forschung funktioniert. Beim letzten Tag
der offenen Tür vor zwei Jahren besuchten rund 4.000 Gäste
die Institute.
Open Day
On November 10, 2012, the two Max Planck Institutes of Martinsried will once again open their doors to the public. Young
and old visitors can take a look behind the scenes of a research
institute on the “Open Day“. In the “MaxLab“ interested people are welcome to work at the laboratory bench themselves.
Presentations and guided tours through the different research
and service groups give a good impression of how science
works. About 4,000 people visited the last “Open Day“ two
years ago.
