Sonically Pure Input
Newly developed integrated optics
pickup
The high-sensitivity integrated optics pickup
relies on advanced chips in the integrated
pickup circuit path to boost signal voltage
for a significantly improved S/N ratio. This
signal is optimized to allow the downstream
high-performance audio circuits and
components to produce the most accurate
sound from any program source including
CDs, CD-R or CD-RW discs. Together with
the error-correction circuit of the laser beam
reading the disc and the precision lens for
optimum tracking accuracy, the resulting
audio signal reproduces the original source
material with utmost fidelity.
Digital Servo System (DSS)
Every compact disc has different
characteristics to its surface. The advanced
technology of the ECLIPSE DSS enables the
compact disc player to automatically
calibrate itself to provide the most accurate
playback from each CD played. DSS uses
five independent servos to calibrate laser
focusing, tracking, laser sled position, pit
track linear velocity and laser beam intensity
to align the laser lens and ensure perfect
tracking. In addition, double error-correction
functions improve tracking through disc
imperfections such as fingerprints and
scratches. The result is reproduction that is
skip and error-free.
Free-Flow Signal Circuit
Select ECLIPSE units feature circuit boards
with high-purity 70-micron copper traces
(double the thickness of conventional film
traces) that allow audio signals to flow more
effectively. Also, the digital and audio
circuits are independently grounded, and
the entire unit has a single-point ground.
This design ensures that there is no signal
degradation or added noise as the audio
signal travels through the unit to the output.
Copper-Shielded Chassis
Select ECLIPSE units feature a fully copperplated chassis designed to reject the pickup
of noise or electromagnetic distortion
radiating from other components in the
vehicle, such as the alternator. This
treatment prevents noise from being
amplified with the audio signal, enabling you
to hear only the audio signal reproduction.
Smart Electronics Control
Audio controls such as volume, Bass/(Mid)/
Treble, Balance, Fader and Non-fader Level/
Phase controls for the subwoofer now have
been successfully integrated on a single
chip, minimizing signal processing and
improving S/N ratio while ensuring smooth,
precise level setting changes.
Quality Components
Only components built to exacting standards
and matching close-tolerance specifications
are picked and used in select ECLIPSE
products. Extreme care is taken to ensure
that each component performs according
to the overall unit design, so that the final
output from the speakers sounds the way
it was intended.
Strong and Clean Output Signal
Gold-Plated Terminals
Gold is the best-known conductor
of electrical energy. Premium ECLIPSE units
are equipped with gold-plated audio
connectors to deliver the purest sound
possible to the amplifier with no signal loss.
The gold plating also protects against
corrosion which causes sound quality
to deteriorate.
High Voltage, Low Impedance
Circuitry
Select ECLIPSE models feature five or
eight volt pre-amplified audio outputs.
Compared to conventional outputs of
approximately one volt, the high-level
outputs deliver a significantly stronger
signal to the amplifier, improving sound
quality, reducing noise and increasing
amplifier efficiency. While there are other
units that supply high voltage outputs, the
combination of high voltage and low
impedance in ECLIPSE units is what so
distinguishes them. Low impedance
circuitry is far less susceptible to noise,
which ensures maximum audio quality.

Signal
Ideal sound reproduction in a mobile
environment requires the convergence of
new and existing technologies in audio,
digital and optical fields. ECLIPSE combines
advances found in professional studio and
high-end audio systems with innovative
circuits and automobile-dedicated
techniques. The audio signal that results is
dramatically pure and dynamic from source
input to speaker output. For playing
conventional CDs or even backups you’ve
put onto a CD-R or CD-RW disc, ECLIPSE
constantly redefines audio for the mobile
environment.

Balanced Outputs
A professional audio signal connection
technique, balanced outputs virtually
eliminate the possibility of noise pickup in
an audio system. Compared to standard
audio cables which carry noise along with
the audio signal to the amplifier,
a balanced output uses two oppositelypolarized wires to carry the audio signal.
If noise is introduced into the system, it will
appear on both audio signals. At the
receiving end is a "Balanced Line Adapter"
which effectively cancels out the noise and
sends only the audio signal to the amplifier.
This technique improves sound quality by
rejecting electrostatic noise and interference
being radiated from various electrical
components and wires in the vehicle that
may be in close proximity to the audio
system cables and wires.

HUMAN INTERFACE &
RELIABILITY

Engineered for
Humans
ECLIPSE engineers study the habits and
movements of a vehicle operator in order to
best design a system that offers maximum
control of functions with a minimum
number of buttons. This ergonomic research
also resulted in features that can be
customized to suit your preferences,
allowing you to control system operations
by touch or by voice and minimizing
distractions when driving.
Electronic Crossover Control
Select ECLIPSE units add the functionality
and control of an electronic crossover
system to the NOB Rotary Encoder, allowing
you to set crossover settings for front, rear,
and non-fader channels (high pass for front/
rear channels, low pass for non-fader
channel).

ECLIPSE COMMANDER-Ready
User-Customizable Functions
Each ECLIPSE unit features several
functions that can be customized for
your preference:
Flexible On-Board Memory
You can use the memory storage of select
ECLIPSE head units to allocate more AM or
FM preset locations (up to 18 AM and 48
FM), or allocate fewer stations and utilize the
available memory to create more custom
titles for your favorite CDs (up to 100).
Five different patterns are available.
Auxiliary Input
A rear-mounted connector enables you
to connect a separate audio source (MP3
player, satellite radio receiver etc.) to play
through your ECLIPSE audio system.
Head Unit Dimmer Settings
In addition to the typical day and night
setting, each setting can be further divided
into high, medium and low levels, offering
you six choices of flexible lighting.
All ECLIPSE DVD/CD head units (except
model CD3412, CD3402) can interface with
the COMMANDER for voice-activated
control of audio functions, source selection,
and even hands-free cellular use — all by
voice recognition and playback. The
COMMANDER can also be upgraded to
perform turn-by-turn navigation using GPS
(Global Positioning System) as well as to
control additional vehicle functions with
spoken commands.
Motorized Tilting Display
Select ECLIPSE units feature a motorized
display that tilts downward for inserting/
ejecting compact discs. The display can be
angled for the driver’s desired viewing angle.
High-Visibility Display Technology
The bright LCD display enables you to view
information clearly, regardless of the lighting
situation with large letters. Select ECLIPSE
units feature High-Visibility VF (Vacuum
Fluorescent Tube) displays for even greater
clarity and visibility.
Customizable Messages
Program custom messages into select
ECLIPSE head units that will still display
when power is off. Up to 5 different
messages (30 characters each) can be
stored.
NOB Rotary Encoder
A single interface controls most of the audio
functions of the ECLIPSE head unit. This
combination button/rotary control allows
you to select specific audio adjustments by
pressing the button to scroll through a
menu, then use the rotary control to
increase or attenuate the selection’s
parameters. The control has a non-slip
coating and is positioned right by the driver
for recognition by touch.
ECLIPSE Security Network (ESN)
The ECLIPSE Security Network (ESN)
protects your head unit from theft. If your
ECLIPSE unit is stolen and removed from
your vehicle, the unit becomes completely
disabled. The main component to ESN is the
Key Disc — any CD from your collection.
Easy steps let you program your ECLIPSE
unit to recognize only the CD title of your
choice. After you’ve had to change your
vehicle’s battery (the ECLIPSE unit will think
it’s been stolen) the only way to make the
unit operational again is to insert your secret
Key CD. ESN is a superior theft deterrent
compared to head units with detachable
faces which can simply be replaced for a
stolen unit to operate.

testing equipment is used to check the
effects of continuous vibration, the
durability of buttons and mechanisms,
and even the effects of electrostatic
shock. Units are also subjected to
extreme heat and cold in an
environmental chamber. When you

ECLIPSE 5.1-Channel Mobile Entertainment System
Featuring DVD Video and Exclusive ECLIPSE Digital Signal Processing (DSP)
True theater sound in a mobile environment is now a reality. ECLIPSE has made it possible
to experience the true dynamics and ambient features of genuine 5.1-channel sound
reproduction in the vehicle. By incorporating elements of psychoacoustics into proprietary
DSP technologies, ECLIPSE engineers have accomplished what no other mobile audio
manufacturer has done, namely the ability to experience reference-quality sound from any
seat in the vehicle.

5.1-Channel Audio Reproduction for
True Theater Experience
DVD Takes Full Advantage of the
5.1-Channel Format
5.1-channel sound provides a full ambient stage
that widens the perception of the audio experience.
Instead of producing sounds in a soundfield that
extends left to right as in stereo, true 5.1-channel
sound allows the listener to experience full
surround-sound with clear dialog and impressive
music and sound effects.
DVD (Digital Versatile Disc) technology offers
improved sound quality and dynamic range that
far surpasses videotape. Since the audio of a DVD
stays in the digital domain as opposed to a
videocassette’s analog sound, DVD is the optimum
choice for the best picture and sound
reproduction. DVD also uses compression
technology that enables hours of perfect picture
and sound quality.
‘5.1’ indicates the speaker configuration needed
for such a system: two speakers in front (left and
right), a speaker at front center (for dialog), two
speakers in the rear (left and right), and a
subwoofer dedicated for low frequencies. The
front, center and rear speakers comprise the ‘5’,
and since the subwoofer does not produce the
full audio spectrum, it is the ‘0.1’.
ECLIPSE DSP Overcomes the
Challenges of the Mobile Environment
The ideal position to experience 5.1-channel audio
is to be at the optimum distance from the
speakers. Because of the close proximity of the
mobile environment, listeners in each seat will
hear sound from speakers closest to them louder
than speakers further away. ECLIPSE has taken the
dynamic range and capability of DVD and 5.1channel sound and adapted them to the mobile
environment with a revolutionary sound
processing technique. Making use of a
psychoacoustic phenomenon known as the Haas
Effect*, the ECLIPSE DSP provides independent
signal processing for each speaker, using time
Special processing combines specific speakers
in the 5.1-channel system to recreate a sound

any frequency. This allows engineers to produce
a soundtrack for a motion picture to fully envelop
the listener.
delay and level adjustments to optimize the
reproduction of sound for any seat position.
ECLIPSE DSP makes any seat the perfect

ECLIPSE DSP offers various settings and filters
that further enhance the listening for all vehicle
passengers.

Signal Routing
Center channel output will be mixed into signals going to all speakers
All center channel output sent to center speaker
If a subwoofer is available, center speaker signals above 100Hz are sent
to the center speaker. Signals below 100Hz are directed to the subwoofer.
If a subwoofer is not available, the full bandwidth center channel signal
is sent to the center speaker.*
All front channel output sent to front speakers
If a subwoofer is available, front channel signals above 100Hz are sent
to the front speakers. Front channel signals below100Hz are directed to
the subwoofer.
If a subwoofer is not available, the full bandwidth front channel signals
are sent to the front speakers.*
Rear channel output mixed into signals sent to all speakers
All rear channel output sent to rear speakers
If a subwoofer is available, rear channel signals above 100Hz are sent
to the rear speakers. Rear channel signals below100Hz are directed to
the subwoofer.
If a subwoofer is not available, the full bandwidth rear channel signals
are sent to the front speakers.*
All subwoofer signals sent to the subwoofer.
Low frequency signals are directed to the rear speakers, even if the
speakers are small. Large rear speakers are therefore recommended to
achieve the best performance without a subwoofer.
* In a situation of no subwoofer and small rear speakers, all low frequency signals are blended into full bandwidth
signals for all speakers.
