YOUR PARTNERS FOR SUCCESS
CAREER EXPLORATION
AND NETWORKING
In today’s competitive job market, law students must be superbly
prepared, focused, and proactive in their efforts to secure their
first professional positions. Michigan State Law’s Career Services
Office (CSO) staff members work hard to equip you with the
tools, resources, and connections needed for success.
The CSO offers an array of services and programs that will be
a vital part of your professional development as an aspiring
attorney. Starting in the spring semester of your 1L year, you’ll
have one-on-one meetings with the CSO career advisor who will
assist you throughout your time at MSU Law.
The CSO team includes six full-time employees who will be
active partners in your career search. Although the staff does
not guarantee jobs, they do provide individual guidance and
customize their services to satisfy your unique personal interests
and professional goals.
Your CSO advisor will help familiarize you with the legal
profession, identify and target potential career opportunities,
and map out and implement action plans. Although you will have
primary responsibility for your own career search, the CSO team
will provide the support, guidance, and resources you need.
The CSO also regularly holds group programs to introduce
students to the range of career options for attorneys and help
you build a professional network. CSO presentations feature
attorneys and other guest speakers who provide insights into
specific practice areas, government employment, judicial

BUILD A PORTFOLIO OF EXPERIENCE
Externships and Internships
Michigan State Law bolsters our academic preparation with a
variety of practical learning opportunities to ensure you’re ready
to “hit the ground running” upon graduation.
Our CSO staff will connect you to a vast national network of
employers offering paid and unpaid real-world training. Located
in the heart of a major university and right next door to the state’s
capital city, the Law College also has countless sites nearby at
which you can gain valuable practical experience as an extern,
intern, or law clerk.
Clinical Programs
The MSU Law Legal Clinic provides a high-energy law firm
environment in which students gain valuable experience working
with real clients. Clinic participation offers a unique opportunity
for students to develop a sense of personal ownership over actual
cases and gain first-hand awareness of the ethical and public
service aspects of the profession. Students also benefit from close
working relationships with clinical faculty members.
Externships provide an excellent way for students to hone their
legal skills, build a professional network, and clarify career
goals—all while earning academic credit. The CSO administers
an extensive externship program, through which students
enhance their legal analysis, negotiation, problem-solving, and
communication skills at sites throughout the United States and
abroad. In summer 2012 alone, the CSO placed 237 externs at 133
Student clinicians handle cases from beginning to end.
Depending on the clinic, they may interview and counsel
clients, investigate facts, research case law, negotiate with other
attorneys and parties, draft contracts, assist with business
transactions, participate in discovery and motion practice, and
represent clients in court. They also may engage in legislative
reform efforts and perform community outreach activities.
Current Legal Clinic practice areas include:
»» Civil Rights Law
»» Criminal Law
»» Family Law
»» First Amendment Law
»» Housing Law
»» Immigration Law
»» Small Business & Nonprofit Law

sites in 23 states and abroad.
One centerpiece of our externship program—the Washington,
DC, Semester Program—allows MSU Law students to
experience life in the nation’s capital while engaging in
on-the-job training at a federal agency. Participants have worked
at U.S. government agencies such as the Department of Justice,
Department of the Interior, Environmental Protection Agency,
Equal Employment Opportunity Commission, and more.
MSU Law’s new Lori E. Talsky Center for Human Rights
of Women and Children also offers exciting externship
opportunities. The Talsky Center funds externships at select
organizations focused on international human rights and
humanitarian law. Funded externships are available in Argentina,
Brazil, Costa Rica, England, the Netherlands, Switzerland,
and elsewhere.
“MSU Law has a great reputation with federal agencies, thanks to
the network of Law College faculty involved in the Washington, DC,

JOB SEARCH
Interview Preparation and Scheduling
CSO staff coordinate workshops geared toward building
students’ skills in areas such as resume writing and business
etiquette. The office’s Career Planning Manual contains in-depth
tips and annotated examples of competitive job search–related
documents such as resumes, cover letters, and thank you letters.
The staff also give detailed guidance and feedback aimed at
showcasing your experiences and skills in a way that resonates
with legal employers.
Once you’re ready for the real thing, the CSO facilitates interviewing opportunities for summer
and post-graduate employment through a variety of channels. MSU Law’s annual On-Campus
Interviewing (OCI) program attracts dozens of employers from across the state and region. The
CSO also helps you reach prospective employers through its collect-and-send and direct-send
resume services, an annual recruitment fair, and connections with programs such as the Patent Law
Interview Program in Chicago and other job fairs.
CSO SERVICES
The CSO offers a full menu of services to help students find,
apply for, and successfully market themselves for part-time,
summer, and post-graduate positions. The office provides
access to a proprietary online job posting system, numerous
legal employer databases, and an alumni job bulletin featuring
employment opportunities in the region and across the nation.
CSO staff provide important services to help students improve their interviewing skills. Career
advisors—along with alumni and local practitioners—conduct individualized mock interviews to
boost your confidence and improve your interviewing skills prior to actual employment interviews.
Realistic mock interviews are digitally recorded and critiqued to help you polish your etiquette and
presentation in a safe, low-stress environment.
