Figge Art Museum is pleased to announce the appointment Tim Schiffer as
the Figge’s new Executive Director. Mr. Schiffer will begin work on August 1.
“We’re really excited that Tim is joining the Figge team. He has an exceptional track record of success and a unique blend of both management
skills and artistic perception. He has many wonderful and exciting ideas to
lead the Figge Art Museum to new high," said Andy Butler, President of the
Figge Board of Trustees.
Mr. Schiffer comes to the Figge from the Museum of Ventura County, a
regional history and art museum in Ventura, California, where he has been
executive director since 1999. Mr. Schiffer received his
B.A. in Fine Art from Yale and his M.F.A. in Painting from
the University of California, Santa Barbara. “When
I visited the Figge for the first time, I was amazed by
the building, by the collection and by the people I met—
they were all so enthusiastic about the museum. I look
forward to working with the board, staff, and the
community, to help the Figge achieve its incredible
potential. It is a real honor to be chosen for this position,” said Mr. Schiffer.
This July the Figge will present NASA | ART: 50 Years of Exploration, a
Smithsonian exhibition featuring artwork that celebrates NASA’s triumphs
and pioneering legacy. In conjunction with the exhibition, the Figge is
offering a variety of Art Talks, demonstrations, family activities, tours and
film screenings. We’ve partnered with the University of Iowa to present
University of Iowa Space Pioneers: 54 Years of Exploration, a NASA | ART
companion exhibition, showcasing objects from the university’s vast
collection of space instruments.

NASA’s historic triumphs and pioneering legacy are well known to
millions, but the inspiring rocket launches, moon landings and planetary explorations also have had an impact on the imaginations of
America’s leading artists. In celebration of the space agency’s 50th
anniversary, the Smithsonian Institution Traveling Exhibition Service
(SITES) presents NASA | ART: 50 Years of Exploration, featuring 72
works by these artists.
NASA | ART features nearly five decades of creations by artists
as diverse as Annie Leibovitz, Nam June Paik, Norman Rockwell,
Andy Warhol and William Wegman. Drawn from the collections
of NASA and the National Air and Space Museum, the exhibition
includes drawings, photographs, sculpture and other art forms
and media. These works—ranging from the illustrative to the
abstract—offer unparalleled insight into the private and personal
moments, triumphant victories and tragic accidents that form the
storied history of NASA.
Organized by the Smithsonian Institution
Traveling Exhibition Service and the National
Aeronautics and Space Administration in
cooperation with the Smithsonian’s National
Air and Space Museum.
For example, in Henry Caselli’s When Thoughts Turned Inward,
the artist captures the serene, almost spiritual moment before
takeoff, when an astronaut must prepare mentally for a mission. In
Chakaia Booker’s Remembering Columbia, the tragedy and pain of
the lost Space Shuttle Columbia and its crew are transformed in the
twisting tire remnants preserved from one of the shuttle’s earlier
missions. Andy Warhol melds Buzz Aldrin’s historic steps on the lunar
surface with the unbridled exuberance and flashiness of the 1960s in
his neon-highlighted Moonwalk silkscreen.
The works featured date from the inception of the NASA Art
Program in 1962, when NASA Administrator James E. Webb asked a
group of artists to illustrate, interpret and elucidate the space agency’s
missions and projects. Since then, painters, musicians and conceptual
artists have been with NASA every step of the way, strolling along
launch pads, training in flight simulators, talking with engineers and
technicians, and visiting with astronauts before and after their flights.

Using works from the exhibition as a catalyst, featured presenters will discuss the
challenges to reaching outer space, explain
how telescopes work, walk guests through

“Discovering a Universe
Beyond the Cosmic Shore”

The cosmic ocean that surrounds us is no
longer a mythical place; it is governed by
natural laws and can be observed and understood by science. Astronomy takes us on a
journey from the Big Bang through the formation of galaxies and stars and planets, to the
present day, and suggests our eventual fate.

Discover some of the scientific and economic
challenges that have faced the NASA program,
including the high cost of sending material to
space, the biological effects of zero-gravity
and the hazards of radiation and space debris.
Brett McCarty is an adjunct physics professor,
specializing in condensed matter physics,
at St. Ambrose University.

In celebration of NASA’s 50th anniversary,

to produce “When We Left Earth: The NASA
Missions,” a miniseries that explores the missions, the people and the triumphs of space
exploration. Narrated by Apollo 13 actor Gary
Sinise, the series chronicles the inside story
of NASA’s most epic endeavors. The six onehour episodes include Ordinary Supermen,
Friends and Rivals, Landing the Eagle, The
Explorers, The Shuttle, and Home in Space.

Figge exterior and lobby
The Figge will light up the night sky this
summer with a one-of-a-kind projection
installation. Hubble Telescope images, local
children’s drawings of astronauts and rockets,
launch sequences and radio telescope images
will be projected on the western exterior of
the Figge building in the evening hours during
the length of the exhibition.
Artist Bruce Walters, in collaboration with
a team of artists, musicians, technicians and
scientists, created this installation to communicate a sense of optimism about the future
and to convey a sense of collective effort and
pursuit of knowledge. NASA represents to
the artist the collective will to expand human
understanding through a synthesis of technology, vision and courage. This artwork is
intended to create a bold, interdisciplinary link
between the arts and physics.
The University of Iowa is considered a pioneer
of space research and has received international recognition for the development
of spaceflight instruments flown on more
than 63 successful missions. Space research
began at the University of Iowa with investigations of Earth’s upper atmosphere and the
discovery of Earth’s radiation belts in 1958
using measurements from University of Iowa
Professor James Van Allen’s instrument on
the first successful U.S. satellite, Explorer 1.
Van Allen is now considered the “father of
space research.”
The University of Iowa’s leadership role
continues today with instruments on 11
operating spacecraft and teams developing instruments for future Earth-orbiting
and planetary missions. Included in NASA |
ART are spaceflight instruments designed
and built at the University of Iowa in the
Department of Physics and Astronomy.

Portrait of Maquoketa
O ctober 2 7 , 2 0 1 2 – J anuary 20, 2013
From 2005 to 2006, Rose Frantzen painted the likeness of
180 inhabitants of her native Maquoketa. She transformed
an empty storefront on Maquoketa’s main street into a studio
and extended an open invitation to the town’s inhabitants to
sit for an impromptu portrait session. The final body of work
collectively forms an intimate portrait of a small, close-knit
community in Iowa. Portrait of Maquoketa was in a group
exhibition organized by Smithsonian’s National Portrait Gallery
in Washington, D.C., in 2009.
Unlike a traditional portrait exhibition, Portrait of Maquoketa
will consist of a series of panels suspended from the ceiling.
Museum visitors will see Frantzen’s portraits on one side of the
panels while a stylized landscape will be painted on the backs of
the panels. This creative installation approach will be accompanied by an audio collage of the portrait subjects.

Rose Frantzen will share her use of representational painting
to explore questions of self and community, giving special
emphasis to the Portrait of Maquoketa project. This has led
her in many directions during her 27-year journey as a fulltime artist. Although she was trained in the alla prima style,
she also employs other representational approaches and creates multidimensional works in which she incorporates diverse
stylistic elements along with gilding, stained glass and mosaic.

Rose Frantzen will demonstrate the alla prima approach to
portrait painting that she used in her Portrait of Maquoketa
project. Frantzen has demonstrated in front of crowds as large
as 750 at events across the country, such as the Portrait
Society of America Conference and American Artist’s Weekend
with the Masters. The Figge welcomes this special opportunity
to see Frantzen paint.

American Culture”
Presenter: Deborah Willis, PhD
Exhibition curator Dr. Deborah Willis will
talk about the central themes of Posing
Beauty in African American Culture. The
lecture will explore contemporary understandings of beauty by framing the notion
of aesthetics, race, class and gender within
art, popular culture and political contexts.
Deborah Willis, PhD, is chair
and professor of photography and imaging at Tisch
School of the Arts, New York
University, where she also
has an affiliated appointment
with the College of Arts and
Sciences, Africana Studies.
Willis, a 2000 McArthur Fellow, is one of
the nation’s leading historians of African
American photography and curator
of African American culture. Her most
recent works are Posing Beauty–African
American Images from the 1890s to the
Present; Michelle Obama, The First Lady
in Photographs; and Black Venus 2010:
They Called Her ‘Hottentot’ (editor).

Culture explores the contested
ways in which African and African
American beauty have been represented
in historical and contemporary contexts
through diverse media including photography, film, video, fashion, advertising and
other forms of popular culture such as
music and the Internet. Throughout the
Western history of art and image-making,
the relationship between beauty and art has
become increasingly complex within contemporary art and popular culture.
The images in this exhibition challenge
idealized forms of beauty in art by examining their portrayal and exploring a variety of
attitudes about race, class, gender, popular
culture and politics as seen through the
aesthetics of representation.
The first of three thematic sections,
“Constructing a Pose,” considers the interplay between (1) the historical and the
contemporary, (2) self-representation and
imposed representation, and (3) subject and
photographer. The second theme, “Body and
Image,” questions the ways in which our contemporary understanding of beauty has been
constructed and framed through the body.
The last section, “Modeling Beauty & Beauty
Contests,” invites us to reflect upon the ambiguities of beauty, its impact on mass culture
and individuals, and how the display of beauty
affects the ways in which we see and interpret the world and ourselves.
Posing Beauty explores contemporary
understandings of beauty by framing the
notion of aesthetics, race, class and gender within art, popular culture and political
contexts. Curated by Dr. Deborah Willis, a
professor at New York University and chair
of the photography and imaging department,
the exhibition seeks not to define beauty but
to pose the question of how beauty is conceived and realized through art, the media
and popular culture. As the title of the exhibition suggests, beauty involves not only the
act of self-presentation (the pose and attitude we adopt when confronted by a camera) but also the social and political underpinnings that frame our ideas of beauty.
This exhibit features approximately 50
works drawn from public and private collections and will be accompanied by a
book published by W.W. Norton. Artists in
the exhibit include, among others, Carrie
Mae Weems, Charles “Teenie” Harris, Gary
Winogrand, Renee Cox, Mickalene Thomas
and Jeanne Moutoussamy-Ashe.

Posing Beauty Special Workshop
When a work of art moves us—causes us
to change from one state to another—
we’re affected in ways we can’t always
readily articulate, often on a variety of
levels. This workshop will address some
of the ways in which art has the power to
move us while encouraging participants to
examine connections between photography
and poetry.
"You Look Beautiful Like This:
Selling Race and Heritage to Chicago’s
African American Community In the
Era of the New Negro"
Presenter: Kimberly Glenn

The New Negro Movement, a blossoming
of the arts founded on the premise of
African American empowerment and pride
in African heritage, took root in the mid1920s. This lecture will explore how the
ideal of black womanhood was championed through the advertisements of new
beauty products that promoted African
and African American aesthetic sensibilities with regard to hair and complexion
during this time period.
College Night at the Figge

Inspired by the exhibition Posing Beauty,
this event will feature a variety of activities that encourage students to explore
identity and personal expression. This
event is free to college students, faculty
and staff.
Napoleon and the Art of Propaganda
September 13, 2012-January 26, 2013
Presented at these locations in Iowa City
by the University of Iowa Museum of Art:
The Pentacrest Museums Gallery for Arts,
Humanities and Sciences in the Old Capitol
Museum and the Black Box Theater at the
Iowa Memorial Union, Iowa City
Napoleon and the Art of Propaganda features
more than 120 drawings, prints, paintings,
works of sculpture, manuscripts, medals and
objet d’art from the remarkable private collection of Pierre-Jean Chalençon. This exhibition
considers the full range of official art created
under Napoleon I and includes works by some
of the most important artists, architects and
sculptors of the period. The selected works
display the power of the Napoleonic propaganda “machine” and its scope of influence
both politically and artistically; illustrate how
Napoleon, his ministers and artists fabricated
and produced an imperial iconography; and
provide the viewer with an understanding
of the legend or myth of Napoleon that
persisted after his death in exile.
The exhibition was organized by the
University of Iowa Museum of Art (UIMA) and
curated by Dr. Heidi E. Kraus, assistant professor of art history, Hope College, and Dr. Sean
O’Harrow, executive director of the UIMA. Dr.
Dorothy Johnson served as senior consultant.

In this lecture, exhibition curator Heidi Kraus
will examine the political importance, historical reliance and aesthetic value of select
Napoleonic portraits created from approximately 1796 through 1850. While portraits
of Napoleon I remain undeniably propagandistic, many possess a beauty, originality and
complexity that often is underemphasized
by art historians. Kraus will explore concrete
examples of how artists working in the service
of Napoleon—including Gros, Appiani, Girodet
and Delaroche—were engaged with and
inspired by their prescribed "official" subject.
Travel with the Figge to Iowa City for a tour
of Napoleon and the Art of Propaganda.
Dr. Dorothy Johnson will present an introductory lecture for the exhibition, and then
she and Dr. Sean O’Harrow, executive director of the University of Iowa Museum of
Art, will lead a tour of the exhibition. The
group will have time to shop and lunch in
downtown Iowa City prior to the tour.

I
n 2011, the Figge Art Museum established
its Outreach Collection—a group of artistic
and cultural objects that can be transported beyond the Figge’s walls to classrooms in
the region. The collection began with a generous donation of objects from artist and former
teacher John Werner and grew rapidly thanks
to a grant from the Iowa Arts Council. Today,
the collection features art objects from Roman
oil lamps and medieval manuscript pages to
African masks and World War II propaganda
postcards. The goal of this collection is to
educate and inspire through direct interaction,
while making students more visually literate.
Visual literacy, or the ability to recognize,
interpret and derive meaning from visual
forms, is at the center of The Big Picture and
has been so since its inception in 2008. From
that time, the program has served nearly
50,000 participants. During the past year,
objects from the Outreach Collection have
inspired more than 5,000 participants in a
“hands-on” and “minds-on” way.
The impetus for creating the Outreach
Collection came through conversations with
area teachers who were looking for creative
alternatives to budget cuts, especially as they
resulted in fewer study trips for students. This
resonated with Outreach Coordinator and
interim Director of Education Melissa Hueting,
who developed a deep curiosity and respect
for objects at an early age.
It was her family’s Greek coin collection
that made the biggest impact on her. “I
remember holding a silver
coin with Alexander the Great’s head on
it and thinking, ‘When were you made?
What have you bought and where have you
traveled?’ One can never anticipate what
will impact a person at any given moment;
for me, it was an object, which is why
we’re doing our best at the Figge to get
the Outreach Collection into the hands of
students and community members alike.”

he Figge Art Museum and the University
of Iowa Libraries are pleased to announce
the release of the Grant Wood Digital
Collection. For the first time, scholars,
students and the general public will have
unprecedented virtual access to the Figge's
Grant Wood Archive scrapbook materials.
The Grant Wood Archive at the Figge
Art Museum is a resource for the study of
arguably America's most iconic artist of the
20th century. The archive, compiled by Nan
Wood Graham—the artist's sister, occasional model and greatest champion—has provided primary source material for numerous
articles, catalogues and monographs for
over 40 years.
The archive is comprised of more than
18 scrapbooks and albums of news clippings,
postcards, letters, snapshots, sketches and
related ephemera assembled by Nan Wood

Graham. The archive also includes the artist’s palettes, paint box and artist’s easel
which Wood designed himself, and personal
effects such as his trademark wire-rim
glasses which are currently on view in the
Museum's American Regionalist Gallery.
This project was made possible by a generous grant from the Henry Luce Foundation
American Art Renewal Fund. Additional funding for imaging equipment was provided by
an anonymous donor; additional funds for
scrapbook conservation has been provided
by the Scott County Regional Authority.
The Grant Wood Digital Collection would
not have been possible without the invaluable professional and technical assistance of
the staff of the University of Iowa Libraries.

the late Michelle Robinson, PhD, Curator of
Collections, 1998-2008.
