MAREN RICHTER
Maren Richter ist Kuratorin und Kunstkritikerin, lebt in Berlin und in Linz, wo sie für die zeitgenössische Kunst der Europäischen Kulturhauptstadt 2009 zuständig ist. Ihr Schwerpunkt
ist gesellschaftspolitische Praxis in der zeitgenössischen Kunst. Seit 2003 ist sie freie Kuratorin u. a. in Berlin, Paris, Taipei und Kunstkritikerin für diverse Zeitschriften, wie Camera
Austria/A, springerin/A, public art review/USA. Von 2003 bis 2006 hat sie gemeinsam mit
Manray Hsu zahlreiche Projekte als Embassy of Contemporary Art zum Thema Globalisierungszusammenhänge, wie "Wayward Economy", 2004 oder "Naked Life", 2006, realisiert.
Maren Richter is curator and art critic, based in Berlin and currently also in Linz, where she is
responsible for the visual arts sphere of the European Capital of Culture 2009. Her field of
expertise is social-political practice in contemporary art. Since 2003 she has been a freelance
curator at various localities, including Berlin, Paris, and Taipei, and an art critic for a diverse range
of periodicals, such as Camera Austria/A, springerin/A, and public art review/USA. Between 2003
and 2006 she realised various projects together with Manray Hsu as Embassy of Contemporary
Art on the effects of globalisation, such as 'Wayward Economy', 2004, and 'Naked Life', 2006.

WALTER SEIDL
Walter Seidl wurde 1973 in Graz geboren und studierte Amerikanistik, Kulturwissenschaften und Zeitgeschichte (Promotion) an Universitäten in Graz, New York, Paris und Seattle.
Diverse kuratorielle Ausstellungsprojekte in Österreich, Bulgarien, Deutschland, Hong
Kong, Serbien, der Slowakei, Slowenien und den USA. Seidl publiziert regelmäßig in österreichischen und internationalen Kunstzeitschriften. Seit 2004 betreut er die Kunstsammlung
der Erste Bank-Gruppe. Der Autor, Kurator und Künstler lebt in Wien.
Walter Seidl was born in Graz, Austria, in 1973 and is based in Vienna. He works as curator,
critic, and artist. As a critic, Seidl writes for various international art magazines such as
Camera Austria, contemporary, springerin or život umjetnosti. His curatorial work has included
projects in Austria, Bulgaria, Germany, Serbia, Slovakia, Slovenia, Hong Kong, and the U.S.

umjetnosti/Life of Art magazine and held several workshops and contemporary art seminars.

Powering this city is its infrastructure: media,
machines, and architectures. Spatial design, rotoscoping, animation (including 3D), and photography
unfold the complexity of the city. A manipulation of
heterogeneous pictorial templates.
"Wir sind die Satelliten" ist ein Styroporplanet, der
sich drehen kann. Es treffen Overheadprojektionen

'We Are the Satellites' is a polystyrene planet that

Als künstlerisches Mittel dient eine zweite Haut,
Kleidungsstück unseres Alltags. Hergestellt für
die untere Hälfte unseres Körpers, bildet sie lediglich ein Fragment, aus dem Ellen Solloch jedoch die
ganze menschliche Figur entstehen lässt, ein breites Spektrum unterschiedlichster Emotionen.
A second skin, namely everyday clothing, can
serve as a means of artistic expression. Ellen
Solloch uses clothing made for the lower half of our
bodies, yet she represents the whole human figure
with its wide range of very different emotions.
Die Ausstellung präsentiert vier Positionen aktueller österreichischer Aktionskunst, die sich nicht auf
psychoanalytische Quellen beziehen, sondern
gezeigt werden Einstellungen zur "ÖffentlichMachung" des Körpers. Aggressiv, lustig, poetisch, vergänglich.
Kurz: Was bedeutet "Re-Action" für die Künstler
heute? – Reaktion oder neues Handeln? Relevant
ist diese Frage, weil die "Großväter-Generation" der
Wiener Aktionisten für die österreichische Kunst
unfruchtbar blieb.
The exhibition presents four positions of current
Austrian action art that – as opposed to referencing
psychoanalytic sources – present attitudes toward
the 'making-public' of the body. Aggressive, funny,
poetical, transient. In short: What meaning does 'reaction' hold for present-day artists? – Reaction or

'grandfather generation' of Viennese actionists
has remained fruitless for Austrian art.

The Vienna-based painter Rainer Wölzl has for
some time been focusing his attention not only on
painting but also on sculpture. While his sculptural figurations appear to be almost
bursting their bronzed skins with exuberating liveliness, figurative elements are gradually
disappearing from his painting. Rainer Wölzl has even sometimes called his art a 'painting
of disappearance', with the figuration being driven to the 'edge of muteness' in its deep
spaces of colour. Rainer Wölzl's work could also be described with the term 'multicodification'. By employing a wide range of techniques – such as informal, tachistic, processoriented painting, concrete figuration, and constructivist elements – Wölzl investigates today's
reality or, more precisely, the violence of this reality.

Franz Yang – Moc'nik ist am 1. Juni 1951 in Kärnten geboren und lebt heute in Graz. Seit 1973 sind
seine Werke in insgesamt 62 Einzel- und 42
Gemeinschaftsausstellungen in Europa, Asien und
Amerika präsentiert worden. Nach erfolgreichen
Ausstellungen in China stellt nun die Galerie Kunst
& Handel Prof. Yang – Moc'nik im Rahmen von
aktuelle kunst in graz mit einer Auswahl von
Werken aus, die der Künstler mit dem Galeristen
gemeinsam zusammengestellt hat.
Franz Yang-Moc'nik was born on 1 June 1952 in
Carinthia, Austria and is now living in Graz. Since
1973 his works have been presented at sixty-two
solo and forty-two group exhibitions in Europe, Asia,
and North America. Following successful exhibitions
in China, the gallery Kunst & Handel is now
presenting Prof. Yang-Moc'nik in the scope of

Another attempt at positioning the poster as a starting point for new works. In his

Thater, which analyse the complexity of nature and
its relationship with mankind. Her new work,
'gorillagorillagorilla', having premiered in the Kunsthaus Graz, is both a study of human and
animal behaviour and the artist's further investigation of the medium of video as an image
production tool capable of creating impressive spatial and visual environments.

Interrogation Room ist die Ausstellung zum Trailer der Diagonale 09 und ist gleichzeitig eine
Analyse der Ambivalenz von Beobachtung und Überwachung: Wie korrespondieren Räume,
Machtstrukturen und Blickverhältnisse? Ausgangspunkt ist der Verhörraum, der assoziativ
sowohl in der Psychiatrie als auch in der Kriminologie verortet ist. Dariusz Kowalski befragt
ihn im Kunsthaus Graz nun auf mehreren Ebenen: als aufgeladenen Ort im Film, als Modell
und als begehbare Installation des Filmsets.
'Interrogation Room' is an exhibition for the trailer of Diagonale 09 and at the same time an
analysis of the ambivalence of observation and surveillance: How do spaces, power
structures, and points of view correspond? Point of departure is the interrogation room, which
we associate with both psychiatry and criminology. In the Kunsthaus Graz, Dariusz
Kowalski now investigates the room at several levels: as a supercharged site on film, as
a model, and as a walk-in installation on a film set.

verschieben und erweitern Dorit Margreiter und
Ursula Mayer den filmspezifischen Kontext in den
Ausstellungsraum. Das Medium Film öffnet dabei
einen aktuellen Blick auf modernistisch konnotierte
Frauenfiguren und Architekturen, um diese ein
Stück weit aus ihrem Kontext herauszunehmen
und mit einer "neuen" Geschichte zu konfrontieren.

Die Ausstellung widmet sich mit etwa 80 Arbeiten
– Skulpturen, Zeichnungen und Studien – dem
Werk des italienischen Künstlers Giuseppe Uncini.
1961 gründete der Künstler zusammen mit Biggi,
Carrino, Santoro und Frascà die "Gruppo Uno". In
dieser Zeit schuf er die Serie seiner "Cementi
Armati" (Armierter Beton). Uncini entwickelte aus
der Materialmalerei eine neue Art von Skulptur: Aus
Fläche und Struktur erzeugte er eine dreidimensionale Plastik und versuchte die malerischen Probleme von Licht und Schatten, von Wahrnehmung
und Perspektive, in die Skulptur zu übertragen.
This exhibition, at which some eighty works –
sculptures, drawings, and studies – are presented,
is dedicated to the Italian artist Giuseppe Uncini
and his oeuvre. In 1961 he founded the 'Gruppo
Uno' together with Biggi, Carrino, Santoro, and
Frascà. During this time he created the series of his
'Cementi Armati' (reinforced concrete). Uncini
developed a new kind of sculpture from material
painting: he created a three-dimensional sculpture
composed of surface and structure. He
endeavoured to transfer the pictorial difficulties
with light and shade, with perception and
perspective, to the sculpture.
Rewind / Fast Forward zeigt erstmals ein Segment der Sammlung, das seit den späten 1960ern
entstanden ist. Mit Ausstellungen der Neuen Galerie wie "audiovisuelle botschaften" (trigon ’73) und
"Postmediale Kondition" (Graz, Madrid 2005/2006)
lässt sich sowohl ein zeitlicher als auch inhaltlicher
Bogen spannen. "Rewind / Fast Forward" versucht,
exemplarisch den vielfältigen Entwicklungen innerhalb des Mediums Video nachzugehen und stellt
dabei Positionen der letzten 40 Jahre vor.
Rewind / Fast Forward presents for the first time
a segment of the collection that originated in the
late 1960s. Exhibitions at the Neue Galerie/New
Gallery Graz such as 'audio-visual messages'
(trigon ’73) and 'Post-media Condition' (Graz,
Madrid 2005–2006) provide a temporal as well as
a contextual framework. 'Rewind / Fast Forward'
follows in an exemplary way the manifold developments within the medium of video, presenting
positions of the last forty years.
Das Bruseum in der Neuen Galerie Graz wagt eine Konfrontation, deren Absicht das Erkennen subtilen Einklangs ist – bei gleichzeitiger Dissonanz. Obwohl das Schaffen von Günter
Brus (*1938) unter keinem direkten Einfluss von Max Klinger (1857 – 1920) steht, so verweisen sie doch beide auf gemeinsame Geistesgrößen aus Kunst, Philosophie und Wissenschaft wie Goya, Novalis, Nietzsche und Darwin. Ein gemeinsames Interesse an der
menschlichen Existenz schafft ein Fundament für verwandte inhaltliche Fragestellungen. An
ausgesuchten Grafiken aus der Sammlung der Neuen Galerie Graz kann der Wesensverwandtschaft der beiden Künstler nachgespürt werden.
The 'Bruseum' in the Neue Galerie/New Gallery Graz ventures to stage a confrontation with
the intention of identifying subtle harmony – in concert with simultaneous dissonance.Although
the creative work of Günter Brus (*1938) was not directly influenced by Max Klinger (1857–
1920), both refer back to mutually admired great intellectual personalities from the fields of
art, philosophy, and science like Goya, Novalis, Nietzsche, and Darwin. Common interest in the
human existence formed a basis for questions of related content. The affinity between the two
artists can be witnessed in their selected works from the New Gallery Collection.

transita kakor tudi kot pokrajino kulinaričnih užitkov. Da tam, nedaleč od avtoceste, najdemo
tudi propadajoče samotne kraje, je le redko komu znano. NA POTI | GEH WEG | STAND BY
se posveča tem "pozabljenim pokrajinam". V sredini Evrope porinjene na rob. V žarišču umetniške akcije je predelan avtobus, ki nam v slikah, besedah, video-posnetkih in objektih obeta imaginarno potovanje v sosednjo deželo in nas tako pripravlja na realno ekspedicijo tja.
Spremljevalci potovanja so glasbeniki in avtorji s Koroške ter Furlanije, ki nam posredujejo
svoj pogled na regijo.

beginnen vom ehemaligen Westen zu sprechen –

The unexcited aesthetics of everyday objects, shifts in perception, visual irritations, and the
resulting conscious realisation of the mechanisms of deception are characteristic of the work
of Markus Wilfing. In the development of his sculptures, which are often based on objets
trouvés or fake ready-mades, he presses ahead with his investigation into the world's
absurdity. While doing so, however, he is not pretending; he is not the one creating the
illusions, but the one sounding out the possibilities of material actualities, whose supposed
reality captures the beholder. Thus, learned brain functions are called into question, while
at the same time recollections gain a momentum of their own and are thrown off kilter.

Eingebettet in die spektakuläre Gartenwelt des

im Dialog. Die neu installierte Skulptur "Sphäre
315", 2005, von Hartmut Skerbisch wird von der
dynamischen Wechselbeziehung zwischen Innen
und Außen, Volumen und Hülle sowie von Transparenz getragen. Nun laden wir zu einer Frühjahrseröffnung, die das gemeinsame Erleben von
Kunst und Natur in den Mittelpunkt stellt.
