Alabama bei Troy und Goshen auf die Suche nach dem anderen
Amerika – dem ländlichen, alltäglichen, welches Touristen nur selten
zu Gesicht bekommen. Ihren europäischen Betrachtern eröffnet sie
so, fern einer „Vom-Winde-verweht“-Nostalgie, ungewohnte Einsichten in weitere Facetten des ländlichen Südens der USA. – Die Ausstellung ist zu sehen Di. – Fr. 9 – 13 und 14 – 17 Uhr. – Eintritt frei.

From the Civil Rights Movement to the Racial
Equality Directive
Lecture by Dr. Terri Givens, Government Department, University of
Texas at Austin
Antidiscrimination policy has a relatively long history in the United
States, as exemplified by recent celebrations of the 50th anniversary
of the passage of the 1964 Civil Rights Act. Europe’s Racial Equality
Directive, passed by the EU in 2000, draws from many elements
of measures taken in the U.S., but enforcement has been a more
difficult issue. In this talk, Dr. Givens will examine key measures
that have been addressed in legislation, and how antidiscrimination
policy can be mainstreamed into both government and corporate
cultures. Terri Givens’ academic interests include radical right parties, immigration politics, and the politics of race in Europe. – Mit

strung couples who meet for a civil discussion about a playground
fight between their sons. Their civil conversation quickly morphs

among savages. A Comedy of Manners without the manners! The
play is an analysis of the tension that exists between the seemingly

Excursion report by Dr. Wolfgang Holtkamp, students from
St. Xavier’s College/University of Mumbai, Saint Louis University,
Stellenbosch University and the University of Stuttgart
Students from Stuttgart and its sister cities explored and compared
human rights concepts and experiences both online and during a
joint excursion to Mumbai in January 2015. Presentation topics will
address effects of globalization with regard to human rights, reflect

Democrats have suffered major election losses in his sixth year in
office. Yet, the President seems to be curiously liberated by this loss,
governing with more energy and confronting the Republican congressional majorities more directly than ever before. What should we
look for in the remaining 20 months of the Obama administration? Is

The Expat Life – Dream or Burden?
Reading and talk with Brittani Sonnenberg, Berlin
What is it like to live in a foreign country? Author Brittani Sonnenberg grew up as a Third Culture Kid in Germany, England, America,
China, and Singapore, and currently lives in Berlin, Germany. As
a Harvard undergraduate she began using her experiences as
writing material, publishing prize-winning fiction and nonfiction
on the subject. Her first novel called “Home Leave” came out in
2014. Meet Brittani Sonnenberg in an informal atmosphere where
she will share her experiences as an expat and discuss them with

Shenandoah in ihren Liedern ihre Tradition der Irokesen mit zeitgenössischer Musik. Seit Jahren setzt sie sich für Frieden und Umwelt
ein, und so trägt ihr letztes Album den Titel Nature Dance. Joanne
Shenandoah ist Grammy-Preisträgerin, wurde im Vatikan empfangen und hatte Auftritte mit dem Dalai Lama und vielen Künstlern

“I’m Poetry in Four-Part Harmony”:
Jay Z, Performance Poet
Lecture by PD Dr. Timo Müller, Universität Augsburg
Are rappers actually poets? In his rap song “Don’t You
Know” (2002) Jay Z claims that he is “poetry.” Dr. Müller will lead
us through a reading of African American literature, one of his
areas of expertise. He will trace the origins of contemporary hip
hop in performance poetry and analyze Jay Z’s rap songs in terms
of the shift in hip hop from impromptu performance at rap battles
to carefully crafted lyrics with multiple layers of meaning. – Mit der

Mexiko ist seit vielen Jahren ein Migrations- und Transmigrationsland. Der wachsende Zustrom aus Zentralamerika lässt auch die
Zahl der Menschen ansteigen, die ohne Papiere auf ihrem Weg in
die USA festgenommen werden. Präsident Obama bezeichnete
die hohe Zuwanderung zentralamerikanischer Jugendlicher und
Kinder im letzten Jahr als dringliche humanitäre Situation. Wie wirkt
sich der politische Druck der USA auf die Migrationsbewegung in
Mexiko aus? Welche Lösungsansätze und wirkungsvollen politischen Forderungen gibt es? Es diskutieren der Journalist Andreas

American Studies
The terrorist attacks of 9/11 shattered American assumptions about
national security. For the decade that followed, the “war on terror”
has shaped both U.S. domestic and foreign policy. More recently,
with the re-election of President Obama, the biggest financial crisis
for 80 years, and American troops leaving Iraq and Afghanistan, the
repercussions of 9/11 seemed to be growing fainter – until January
7, 2015, when France was hit by one of the worst terrorist attacks
in the nation’s history. Time to take stock: Where are we now in
the fight against terrorism? This program provides theoretical input

Tom Stoppard
In 1930 Flora Crewe, a young poet, travels to India. She meets an
Indian painter, Nirad Das, and agrees to sit for a portrait. Meanwhile
in contemporary England another young Indian painter, Anish,
goes to visit Mrs. Eleanor Swan, the sister of Flora Crewe. Although
Eleanor spent much of her life in India before independence, she
and Anish clash over interpretation of Indian history while also untangling the relationship of Flora and Nirad. – Mit dem New English

Vortrag von Dr. Reinhild Kreis, Universität Mannheim
„Von der Feindschaft zur Freundschaft“ – so werden die deutschamerikanischen Beziehungen nach 1945 häufig zusammengefasst.
Freundschaft in solch einer ungleichen Allianz während des Kalten
Krieges zu erarbeiten war jedoch keine leichte Aufgabe. Sie bedurfte der ständigen Vermittlung und gegenseitigen Vertrauenswerbung
unter anderem durch die amerikanischen Kulturinstitute. Dr. Reinhild Kreis zeichnet in ihrem Vortrag die großen Linien der deutschamerikanischen Beziehungen auf lokaler Ebene nach und zeigt, wie
auch die deutsche Bevölkerung die Amerikahäuser und DAIs nutzte,

course starts with a brief review of camera technique and functionality, but quickly gives the photographer the information necessary
to take control of the camera and express his or her artistic vision.
American instructor James Palik is a former student of Ansel Adams
and currently teaches both the fundamentals of digital photography
and masters classes at the Hochschule der Medien in Stuttgart. You

Vortrag von Curd Knüpfer, John-F.-Kennedy-Institut für Nordamerikastudien, Freie Universität Berlin
Alternative Medienkanäle etablieren sich zunehmend in Konkurrenz
und als Kritik zum existierenden Mainstream-Journalismus. Eines der
erfolgreichsten Geschäftsmodelle dieser Art ist der US-Kabelfernsehsender Fox News. Dessen loyales Stammpublikum wählt vornehmlich
republikanisch, glaubt nicht an den Klimawandel, hält die US-Regierung für totalitaristisch und andere Formen des Journalismus für linke
Propaganda. Curd Knüpfer erklärt die Rolle von Fox News in den
USA und geht dabei auch auf neueste Entwicklungen in Europa und
