It is not important in which season of the year you are coming. You can
always be sure that you will visit a hotel with a 300-year-old tradition of top
services, that you will visit a town which has been here for 650 years filled
with events. A town which has lived a unique social and cultural life for 650
years already. Therefore there is no reason to grieve for the leaving summer.
It is true that it is carrying away the memories of warm summer days and the
all-star film festival; however, you can remember them inside this issue. And
the colourful Karlovy Vary autumn is bringing new events – festivals, concerts

Herr der Ringe)? „Euer Festival ist der beste auf der

43. internationales Filmfestival
Slavnostní sál Grandhotelu Pupp přivítal soutěžící
duelu dvou měst, Karlových Varů a Plzně. Soutěž
byla přímým přenosem vysílána na prvním programu
České televize. V různých vědomostních i sportovních disciplínách změřila znalosti, obratnost i sílu řada
umělců a sportovců. O vítězi soutěže spolurozhodovali také televizní diváci, kteří nakonec za nerozhodného stavu přiřkli celkové těsné vítězství týmu z Plzně.

Po devět červencových dní byly Karlovy Vary opět
zasvěceny filmu. Pravda, nejen filmu, ale i doprovodným kulturním akcím, večírkům a filmovým hvězdám.
Prestiž karlovarského festivalu ve světě rok od roku
stoupá. Také proto jsme v Grandhotelu Pupp mohli
uvítat taková jména, jako Robert de Niro, Saffron
Burrows, Christopher Lee, Danny Glover a mnoho
dalších. Také proto jsme v letošních hraných znělkách
festivalu mohli vidět takové osobnosti, jakými jsou
Harvey Keitel, Věra Chytilová, Danny de Vito či
Miloš Forman. Kinosály a společenské prostory praskaly ve švech. Bezmála 144.000
diváků vidělo 477 filmových
představení, 56 snímků mělo
v Karlových Varech světovou

43rd International Film Festival
Karlovy Vary was dedicated to film for nine days in
July again. Naturally, not only to film but also to supporting events, parties and film stars. The prestige of
the Karlovy Vary Film Festival keeps growing year after
year. That is why we could welcome such names as
Robert de Niro, Saffron Burrows, Christopher Lee,
Danny Glover and many others in Karlovy Vary. That
is why we could see such personalities as Harvey
Keitel, Věra Chytilová, Danny de Vito or Miloš Forman
playing in film signatures. Cinema rooms and social
rooms were bursting at the seams. Almost 144,000
visitors saw 477 film performances, 56 of them had
their world or international premiere in Karlovy Vary.
And Christopher Lee‘s (Star Wars, The Lord of the
Ring) commentary? ”Your festival is the best in the
world. And I am serious about what I am saying”.
Neun Julitage wurde Karlsbad wieder dem Film
gewidmet. Stimmt, nicht nur dem Film, sondern auch
den begleitenden Kulturveranstaltungen, den Partys
und den Filmstars. Das Prestige des Karlsbader
Festivals in der Welt steigt fon Jahr zu Jahr. Auch deshalb konnte man im Grandhotel Pupp solche Namen
wie Robert de Niro, Saffron Burrows, Christopher
Lee, Danny Glover und viele weitere willkommen.
Darum konnte man in den diesjährigen gespielten
Festivalsonett solche Persönlichkeiten wie Harvey
Der Festsaal von Grandhotel Pupp begrüßte die
Wettkämpfer im Stadtduell, zwischen Karlsbad und
Pilsen. Der Wettbewerb wurde Live am ersten
Programm des Tschechischen Fernsehens gesendet.
In verschiedenen Wissens-, sowie Sport­disziplinen
testeten ihre Kenntnisse, Ge­schick­lichkeiten und Kraft
eine Reihe von Künstlern und Sportlern. Über den
Sieger entschieden auch die Fernsehzuschauer, die
zum Schluss bei Unen­tschieden den knappen
Gesamtsieg dem Team aus Pilsen zusprachen.
A programme of Czech Television ”Challenge”
The Festive Hall of the Grandhotel Pupp welcomed
competitors in the duel of two towns, Karlovy Vary
and Plzeň. The competition was broadcast live on the
first programme of Czech Television. A number of artists
and sportsmen competed in knowledge, sports disciplines and agility. TV viewers co-decided on the winner of
the competition and when it ended in a draw, they
awarded a narrow victory to the team from Plzeň.

Do konce září probíhá
v karlovarském muzeu
výstava nazvaná Green
Story. Expozice zachycuje počátky a vývoj golfu
v našem městě a regionu. Grandhotel Pupp je
jedním z hlavních partnerů této putovní výstavy, kterou později uvidí
také návštěvníci v Ně­
mecku a Švédsku. V sou­
vislosti s výstavou vznikla kniha stejného názvu,

jež by neměla chybět v knihovničce žádného příznivce a hráče golfu.

Bis Ende September findet im Karlsbader
Museum eine Ausstellung mit dem Namen
Green Story statt. Sie erfasst die Anfänge und
die Entwicklung von Golf in unserer Stadt und
Region. Grandhotel Pupp ist einer der
Hauptpartner dieser Wanderausstellung, die später Besucher in Deutschland und Schweden sehen werden. Im Zusammenhang mit der
Ausstellung entstand auch ein gleichnamiges
Buch, das im Bücherschrank jedes Golfliebhabers
und Golfspielers nicht fehlen sollte.

Green Story
An exhibition called The Green Story can be seen in
the Karlovy Vary museum till the end of September.
It shows the beginnings and development of golf in
our town and region. The Grandhotel Pupp is one of
the main partners of this touring exhibition which
will also be seen by visitors in Germany and Sweden.
Referring to this exhibition a book of the same name
was published which every fan or player of golf
should have in his bookcase.

La Belle Epoque

Předposlední zastávka při našem putování restauracemi Grandhotelu Pupp je v La Belle Epoque,
restauraci „Zlatého věku“. Velkorysý prostor
v atriu budovy Grandhotelu Pupp First Class prošel ve své historii mnoha podobami. Svou poslední tvář dostal v roce 2007, od kdy je tento historický interiér využíván jako restaurace pro výjimečné události, firemní a prezentační akce, vernisáže,
festivalové, plesové a společenské příležitosti.
Stropem prosvětlený sál s mramorovým sloupovím doplnily měkké koberce v barvě bordó,
pohodlná křesla a kašírované paravány. Mezi nedávné události se zařadil i kongres učitelů tance
a v průběhu letošního filmového festivalu zde bylo
zřízeno Film Café. Hosté festivalu, herci, režiséři,
osobnosti ze světa filmu i filmoví fanoušci si zde
mohli nad dobrou kávou nebo čajem vyměňovat
své zážitky, postřehy, zkušenosti.

Příjemné prostory, ve kterých je možné obsloužit
najednou až 80 osob, jsou připraveny uspokojit
náročné požadavky také po stránce gastronomické.
Z široké nabídky kombinací menu, které pro vás
naši mistři kuchaři mohou připravit, vybíráme:
The last but one stop on our tour round the
Grandhotel Pupp restaurants is in La Belle
Epoque, or the ‘golden era’ tea room. The expansive premises in the atrium of the First Class
building in the Grandhotel Pupp has changed its
face several times in its history. Its last remodeling
was completed in 2007 since when this historical
interior has served as a restaurant hosting extraordinary events, corporate and presentation programs, varnishing days, festival, ball and other
social gatherings. The hall with a light-spreading
ceiling and marble columns was finished with
soft, dark Bordeaux carpets, cozy armchairs and
mock-up Spanish screens. Recently, the hall was
the place of a dance teachers congress. During the
2008 international film the Film Café was set up
on its premises. Festival guests, actors, directors
and other important figures from the world of
movie and their fans could share their experiences, observations and thoughts over a cup of coffee or tea here.
The cozy premises where up to 80 people can be
served at a time are ready to satisfy demanding
gastronomic requests too. Of the broad choice of
menu combinations prepared by our chefs we
would like to suggest the following:

anlässe benutzt wird. Von der Decke durchleuchteter Saal mit Marmorsäulen ergänzt von weichen
Teppichen in Bordeauxfarbe, bequemen Sesseln
und kaschierten Paravents. Zu den letzten
Ereignissen reihte sich auch der Kongress der
Tanzlehrer, während des diesjährigen Filmfestivals
wurde hier ein Film Café errichtet. Festivalgäste,
Schauspieler, Regisseure, Persönlichkeiten aus
der Filmwelt auch Filmfans konnten hier bei guten
Kaffee oder Tee ihre Erlebnisse, Splitter,
Erfahrungen austauschen.
Angenehme Räumlichkeiten, in denen es möglich
ist, bis zu 80 Personen auf einmal zu bedienen,
sind bereitet anspruchsvolle Forderungen auch
von der gastronomischen Sicht zu befriedigen.

Tradition has it that young wine arrives on the third
November Thursday. The grapes used to produce
this light, fresh wine are not pressed but poured
into tanks or wine casks including their stems.
Carbon dioxide reacts with the layers of grapes that
begin to ferment under their skin (i.e. without the
access of air). This method helps to retain the fruity
taste and forest berry smell of this young wine.
Beaujolais belongs to Burgundy. And light, creative
and varied Burgundy cuisine belongs to Beaujolais.
This pleasant wine is perfectly complete when combined with a variety of meat, fish and vegetables.

One of the world’s most praised actors received a Special
Achievements Award at the International Karlovy Vary Film
Festival earlier this year. Since the beginning of his career in
1969 he has shot dozens of movies, the most outstanding
ones including the Oscar winner the Godfather Part II
(1974), New York, New York (1977), Raging Bull (1980) or
Jackie Brown (1997). Robert de Niro is a New York patriot.
In the course of time he named his restaurant, production
company and film festival Tribeca to honor the New York
district where he was born. In August the list of his jobs was
added with that of a hotel proprietor when he opened a small
luxury hotel called Greenwich in Tribeca. This past summer
he and his family spent three days in Karlovy Vary, using the
hospitality of the Grandhotel Pupp. And what did Robert de

Povedlo se to až jeho pravnukům, Antonovi, Juliovi
a Heinrichovi. Tito tři bratři založili v roce 1872 společnou firmu Pupp, která se postarala o největší vzestup
hotelového komplexu. Ten se tehdy nazýval Eta­b­
lissement Pupp a zahrnoval především prostory
Českého sálu, Cafésalonu a k němu přilehlému
Billiardsalonu. Saský sál koupili bratři až v roce 1890.
Pátá generace Puppů započala rozsáhlé rekonstrukce.
Skoupili zbytek okolních pozemků, staré budovy dali
zbourat a zcela přestavět. Přestavbu vedli osvědčení vídeňští architekti Ferdinad Fellner a Hermann Helmer.
Grandhotel tak získal podobu, jakou známe dnes.

Vývoj Grandhotelu Pupp se může po­chlubit více než
třísetletou historií, během které se hotel stal jedním ze
symbolů Karlových Varů. Kde tedy hledat počátky
mezinárodního věhlasu, kterým se Grandhotel Pupp
může pochlubit? První stavbou na místě nynějšího hotelového komplexu byl Saský sál, postavený tehdejším
starostou města Deimlem v roce 1701. Sál byl původně
pojmenován Salle de l´Assemblée. Na přijetí pozdějšího názvu měl vliv fakt, že spoluinvestorem stavby byl
saský kurfiřt a polský král August Silný II. Jiný karlovarský starosta, Andreas Becher, stál za stavbou blízkého,
avšak konkurenčního Českého sálu. Potomci starosty
Deimla si na svých pozemcích před Českým sálem postavili dům Boží oko, třetí pilíř budoucího hotelového
celku. Své nynější jméno nese Grandhotel po Johannovi
Georgovi Puppovi, cukráři, jenž se přiženil do vlivné
karlovarské rodiny Mitterbachů. Pupp koupil postupně
v letech 1775-85 od Becherů Český sál, od základů ho
přestavěl a zvětšil. Snažil se také koupit, nebo alespoň

Die Entwicklung von Grandhotel Pupp kann sich
mit mehr als dreihundertjähriger Geschichte
rühmen, während der es zu einem der Symbole
von Karlsbad wurde. Wo soll man also den Ur­
sprung der internationalen Berühmtheit, mit der
sich Grandhotel Pupp rühmen kann, suchen? Das
erste Objekt an Stelle des jetzigen Hotelkomplexes
war der Sächsische Saal, gebaut vom damaligen
Bürgermeister der Stadt Deiml im Jahre 1701. Der
Saal wurde ursprünglich Salle de l´Assemblée genannt. Seine spätere Benennung beeinflusste, dass
der Mitinvestor der sächsische Kurfürst und polnische König August II. der Starke war. Ein anderer
Karlsbader Bürger­meister, Andreas Becher, ver­
ursachte den Bau des in der Nähe liegenden, aber
konkurrierenden Böhmischen Saales. Die Nach­
kommen vom Bürgermeister Deiml haben auf ihren
Grundstücken vor dem Böhmischen Saal das Haus
Gottes Auge gebaut, die dritte Säule des zukünftigen
Hotelkomplexes. Seinen jetzigen Namen trägt das
Grandhotel nach Johann Georg Pupp, einem
Zuckerbäcker, der sich in die einflussreiche Karls­
bader Familie Mitterbach einheiratete. Pupp kaufte
nach und nach in den Jahren 1775-85 von Familie
Becher den Böhmischen Saal, von Grundrissen hat
er ihn umgebaut und vergrößert. Er bemühte sich
auch den Sächsischen Saal zu kaufen, oder wenigstens zu mieten, dies gelang ihm aber nicht. Es gelang erst seinen Urenkeln, Anton, Julius und Hein­
rich Pupp. Diese drei Brüder gründeten im Jahre
1872 eine gemeinsame Firma Pupp, die für den
größten Aufschwung vom Hotelkomplex sorgte.
Dieser hieß damals Etablissement Pupp und umfasste vor allem die Räumlichkeiten des Böhmischen
Saals, den Cafésalon und den anliegenden Billard­
salon. Den Sächsischen Saal kauften die Brüder
erst im Jahre 1890. Die fünfte Generation Pupp
begann mit umfangreicher Rekonstruktion. Sie
kauf­ten die übrigen umliegenden Grundstücke, die
alten Gebäude ließen sie niederreißen und bauten
sie völlig um. Den Umbau führten die anerkannten
Wiener Architekten Ferdinand Fellner und Hermann
Helmer. Das Grandhotel bekam somit das Aussehen,
das wir heute kennen.

The Grandhotel Pupp can boast more than a 300-hundred-year-old history during which it has become one of
the symbols of Karlovy Vary. And where to look for the
origins of the international fame the Grandhotel Pupp
can boast? The first building in the place of the present
hotel complex was the Saxon Hall whose construction
had been initiated by Mayor Deiml in 1701. The hall
was originally called Salle de l´Assemblée. Later it was
renamed as one of its co-investors was the Saxon elector and Polish king August the Strong II. Another mayor
of Karlovy Vary, Andreas Becher, initiated the construction of the nearby Bohemian Hall, a rival of the Saxon
Hall. Mayor Deiml´s descendants built the God's Eye
House, the third pillar of the future hotel complex, on
their grounds in front of the Bohemian Hall. It has got
its present name after Johann George Pupp, a confectio­
ner who married into the influential Mitterbach family
from Karlovy Vary. Between 1775 and 1785 Pupp
bought the Bohemian Hall from the Becher family part
after part, rebuilt it from its very foundations and extended it. He tried, too, to buy or at least to hire the Saxon
Hall; however, he was not successful. Only his greatgrandsons Anton, Julius and Heinrich Pupp managed to
do it. In 1872 the three brothers founded a firm Pupp
together which played an important part in the later rise
of the hotel complex. At that time it was called
Etablissement Pupp and included first of all the
Bohemian Hall, Cafésalon and the adjacent Billiardsalon.
It was only in 1890 that the brothers bought the Saxon
Hall. The fifth generation of the Pupps started an extensive renovation. They bought the remaining grounds in
the neighbourhood, had the buildings pulled down and
completely rebuilt. The renovation was lead by expe­
rienced Viennese architects Ferdinand Fellner and
Hermann Helmer. In those days the Grandhotel Pupp
got the appearance which we know today.

Ruský car Petr Veliký (1672-1725), reformátor a velký příznivec všeho moderního, se bezesporu řadí
k nejvýznamnějším a nejslavnějším hostům, kteří kdy
v Karlových Varech pobývali. Přijel s ročním odstupem dvakrát v letech 1711 a 1712 a jeho pobyty
byly pro lázeňské město tou nejlepší reklamou.
Vzápětí ke Vřídlu a dalším horkých pramenům mířila polská a ruská šlechta, pro niž se stala návštěva
lázní v dalších desetiletích součástí bontonu. Zatímco
postavou urostlý, zdatný a duchem velký panovník
pomáhal zedníkům při stavbě domů, jezdil na neosedlaném koni na Jelení skok, u kováře na hamru
koval podkovy, u truhláře soustružil dřevěné nohy
ke karetnímu stolu nebo vyhrával střelecké závody,
tak v ohybu říčky Teplé již 10 let sloužil první karlovarský lusthaus. Nejprve pojmenovaný Salle de
l’Assemblée, později Saský sál, v každém případě
první budova z řady hotelových staveb, které v průběhu tří staletí dospěly až k současné podobě
Grandhotelu Pupp. Saský sál ohromoval impozantní
dvoranou, největším sálem v lázních. Přestože historické prameny mlčí, je téměř jisté, že si car návštěvu
oblíbeného místa setkání, plesů i oficiálních oslav
nenechal ujít. Mimo jiné zde jednal i s německým
filozofem Wilhelmem Leibnitzem o možnostech
spojenectví Ruska a Rakouska proti Francii. Možná
právě v Saském sále podepsal car dekret, kterým
udělil Leibnitzovi titul ruského tajného justičního
rady, na základě kterého měl filozof pomoci rozvíjet
umění a vědu v Rusku. Po caru Petru Velikém je

Unmittelbar darauf kam zum Sprudel und den anderen heißen Quellen der polnische und russische
Adel, für den der Kurbesuch in den weiteren
Jahrzehnten ein Bestandteil von Bonton war.
Während von der Gestalt gut gewachsen, kräftiger
und geistig großer Herrscher den Maurern beim
Häuserbau half, am unsattelten Pferd auf den
Hirschensprung ritt, beim Schmied am Hammer einen
Huf schmiedete, beim Schreiner hölzerne Beine
zum Kartentisch drechselte oder Schießwettbewerbe
gewann, so diente im Bogen des Flüsschens Tepl
bereits 10 Jahre das erste Karlsbader Lusthaus.
Zuerst als Salle de l’Assemblée genannt, später dann
als der Sächsische Saal, jedenfalls das erste Gebäude
von der Reihe der Hotelgebäude, die im Laufe der
drei Jahrhunderte bis zu jetzigem Aussehen von
Grandhotel Pupp gelangen. Der Sächsische Saal
verblüffte mit imposanter Halle, dem größten Saal
im Kurort. Obwohl die historischen Quellen schweigen, ist fast sicher, dass sich der Zar den Besuch des
beliebten Treffpunktes, der Bälle sowie offizieller
Feiern nicht entgehen ließ. Unter anderem verhandelte er hier auch mit dem deutschen Philosophen
Wilhelm Leibnitz über die Möglichkeiten der Allianz
von Russland und Österreich gegen Frankreich.
Vielleicht gerade im Sächsischen Saal unterschrieb
der Zar das Dekret, mit dem er Leibnitz den Titel
des russischen Geheimjustizrats erteilte, auf Grund
dessen sollte der Philosoph die Kunst und die
Wissenschaft in Russland entwickeln helfen. Nach
dem Zaren Peter dem Großen ist bis heute die
Felsenhöhe unweit von Grandhotel Pupp benannt,
wo es die Büste des Zaren aus dem Jahre 1877 gibt
und woher eine wunderschöne Aussicht auf das gesamte Kurtal ist.

Czar Peter the Great
The Russian czar Peter the Great (1672–1725),
a reformer and a big friend of everything modern,
ranks undoubtedly as one of the most prominent
visitors who have ever stayed in Karlovy Vary. He
came twice in the course of a year, in 1711 and
1712, and his stays were the best advertisement for
the town. Immediately afterwards the Polish and
Russian aristocrats headed for the Sprudel and other
hot springs. A visit to the spa town became part of
good manners for them in the following decades.
While the well-built and sturdy ruler of high intelligence was helping stonemasons to build houses, riding an unsaddled horse to the Deer‘s Jump viewing
point, hammering horseshoes in a smithy and turning legs for a card table in a joiner‘s workshop or
winning a shooting contest, the first Karlovy Vary
lusthaus in the bend of the Teplá River had been
open for ten years already. First called Salle de
l´Assemblée, later the Saxon Hall, in any case the
first of a number of hotel buildings which arrived at
the present appearance of the Grandhotel Pupp in
the course of three centuries. The Saxon Hall impressed by its imposing lobby, the biggest hall in the
spa town. Although historical sources are silent, it is
almost sure that the czar did not miss the opportunity to visit the popular place where meetings, balls
and official celebrations were held. Apart from
other things, he also discussed the possibility of the
alliance between Russian and Austria against France
with the German philosopher Wilhelm Leibnitz here. It might have been just in the Saxon Hall that the
czar signed a decree through which he conferred the
title of the Queen‘s Counsel on Leibnitz. The philosopher should have helped to develop art and
science in Russia on the basis of the decree. A rock
height in the neighbourhood of the Grandhotel
Pupp was named after Czar Peter the Great and it
has kept this name until these days. There is the
czar´s bust dating from 1877 here and a beautiful
view of the whole spa valley.

Horní hrad - Hauenštejn

Údolí řeky Ohře je díky své malebnosti často vyhledávaným turistickým cílem. Pokud zvedneme
pohled od říční hladiny k obzoru, najdeme ve
zvlněném terénu podél údolí mnoho zajímavých
míst. Jedním z nich je bezesporu Horní hrad –
Hauenštejn. Hrad byl postaven na čedičovém ost­
rohu nad údolím Ohře v druhé polovině 13. sto­
letí. Vznikl pravděpodobně jako součást královských pohraničních opěrných bodů. V průběhu
staletí vystřídal mnoho majitelů, mezi významné
vlastníky patřili Lucemburkové, Šlikové či SaskoLauenburští. V polovině 19. století, za vlastnictví
Gabriely Buquoy-Longueval, začíná rozsáhlá přestavba strohého strážního hradu na novogotický
zámek v anglickém stylu. Rekonstrukce zasáhla
i bezprostřední okolí, které bylo upraveno do romanticky laděného parku s kaskádami rybníčků
a kamennými můstky přes protékající potok. Rod
Buquoyů vlastnil Hauenštejn až do konce druhé
světové války, kdy byl zkonfiskován a předán do
státní správy. Hrad byl postupně používán jako
ubytovna Jáchymovských dolů a dětský domov.
Od roku 1958 byl Hauenštejn opuštěn a nechán
napospas vandalům a horskému klimatu. Teprve
v roce 2000 přechází zubožený zámek do soukromého vlastnictví a okamžitě začínají záchranné
činnosti. Už v roce 2002 byla slavnostně otevřena
zrekonstruovaná gotická věž s rozhlednou.
Postoupila i další obnova hradu a regenerace
hornohradského údolí. V současné době si na
Horním hradě můžete prohlédnout celý areál
středověkého sídla, pokochat se překrásnou vyhlídkou z hradní věže na okolní krajinu, navštívit
některou z mnoha kulturních akcí, ochutnat místní medovinu nebo se zúčastnit noční prohlídky
hradu při osvětlení loučemi.

Das Egertal ist dank seines malerischen Aussehens
oft aufgesuchtes Reiseziel. Wenn man den Blick von
der Flussoberfläche nach oben hebt, findet man in
der hügeligen Landschaft entlang des Tals viele interessante Orte. Einer von ihnen ist zweifellos
Hauenstein. Die Burg wurde an einer Basaltlandzunge
über dem Egertal in der zweiten Hälfte des 13.
Jahrhunderts erbaut. Sie entstand wahrscheinlich als
ein Teil der königlichen Grenzstützpunkte. Im Laufe
der Jahrhunderte wechselte sie viele Besitzer, zu den
bedeutenden Eigentümern gehörten die Adelsfamilien
Luxemburg, Schlick oder Sachsen-Lauenburg. In der
Hälfte des 19. Jahrhunderts, während der Herrschaft
von Gabriela Buquoy-Longueval, beginnt ein umfangreicher Umbau der schlichten Wachburg zu einem
neugotischen Schloss im englischen Stil. Auch die
nahe Umgebung wurde in einen romantischen Park
mit Teichkaskaden und steinernen Brücken über den
durchfließenden Bach umgebildet. Das Geschlecht
Buquoy besaß die Burg Hauenstein bis Ende des
zweiten Weltkriegs, als sie enteignet und dem Staat
übergeben wurde. Die Burg wurde zuerst als
Herberge der Joachimsthaler Bergwerke und dann
als Kinderheim genutzt. Seit dem Jahre 1958 war
Hauenstein verlassen und den Wandalen und dem
Gebirgsklima hinterlassen. Erst im Jahre 2000
kommt das verkommene Schloss in Privatbesitz und
sofort beginnen Rettungsarbeiten. Bereits im Jahre
2002 wurde der wieder hergerichtete gotische Turm
mit Aussicht feierlich geöffnet. Es schritt auch die
weitere Burgherrichtung und Erneuerung des
Hauensteiner Tals fort. Zur Zeit kann man auf
Hauenstein das gesamte mittelalterliche Burggelände
besichtigen, sich an wunderschöner Aussicht vom
Burgturm in die Umgebung ergötzen, eine der zahlreichen Kulturveranstaltungen besuchen, hiesigen

Nacht bei Fackellicht teilnehmen.
The valley of the Ohře River is popular with tourists thanks to its picturesqueness. If you raise your
eyes from the river, you will see a number of interesting places in the rolling countryside. One of
them is undoubtedly the castle Horní hrad –
Hauenštejn. The castle was built on a piece of
basalt rock towering over the Ohře valley in the
second half of the 13th century. It was probably
one of royal strategic points on the border. The
castle had a lot of owners in the course of centuries, such as the Luxemburg family, the Schlick family or the Saxon-Lauenberg family. An extensive
conversion of the severe guard castle into a neogothic chateau in the English style started in the
middle of the 19th century when it was possessed
by Gabriela Buquoy-Longueval. The renovation
included the close surroundings of the castle
which was changed into a romantic park with
cascades of ponds and stone bridges across a brook flowing through it. The Buquoy family owned
the castle until the end of World War II, and then
it was confiscated and got under state administration. At first the castle was used as a dormitory of
the Mines of Jáchymov company and then as
a children‘s home. From 1958 Hauenštejn was
abandoned and left at the mercy of vandals and
mountain climate. It was only in 2000 that the
dilapidated castle became private property. Salvage
operations started immediately thereafter.
The renovated gothic tower with a viewing tower
was opened as early as 2002. Further renovation
of the castle and the whole valley of Horní hrad
has advanced as well. At present you can see the
whole grounds of the medieval seat, enjoy the
wonderful view of the countryside from the castle
tower, visit some of numerous cultural events,
taste local mead or take part in the night tour
round the castle by pine torch light.

RUSALČIN PRAMEN - pramen č. 7
Původně se jmenoval Nový pramen, i když byl
znám již v 16. století. Je to ten slavný Nový pramen, který byl v 18. a 19. století středem pozornosti všech lázeňských hostí. Nad ním stávala od roku
1748 dřevěná kolonáda Nového pramene. Přímo
u pramene zde tehdy ordinovali lázeňští lékaři - mezi nimi jako jeden z prvních David Becher.
Pitná kúra se stala i společenskou záležitostí - původní dřevěná kolonáda musela být stále rozšiřována (1793, 1811), aby vyhověla návalu pacientů.
Nakonec byl tento pramen začleněn do Mlýnské
kolonády (1871-1881), navržené a vystavěné pražským architektem Josefem Zítkem. Výsadní postavení mezi karlovarskými prameny však již převzal
Mlýnský pramen.
Voda z Nového pramene se původně rozptylovala
pod nánosem náplavů Teplé. Teprve v r. 1746 byl
z popudu karlovarského lékaře Springfelda zachycen dřevěnou jímkou a využit pro pitnou kúru.
Dr. Springfeld také provedl chemickou analýzu
pramenní vody a dával mu dokonce pro jeho léčivé vlastnosti přednost před Vřídlem.
V r. 1762 byla jímka pramene přestavěna a voda
pak svým vlastním vztlakem vystupovala o 3 sáhy
výše (dříve se musela nabírat přímo z jímky do
džbánků). Voda pramene však měla nepříjemný
pach, jakoby po zkažených vejcích. Výstupní pažnice byla z borového dřeva a reakcí termální vody
s tímto dřevem vznikal sirovodík. Pažnici proto
vyrobili z lipového dřeva, přesto se nedařilo zápach zcela odstranit. Navzdory těmto zkušenostem
byly u všech karlovarských pramenů až do 60. let
19. sto­letí pro výstupní pažnice používány provrtané lipové kmeny. Rusalčin pramen (jak byl Nový
pramen přejmenován po II. světové válce) byl
v r. 1984 nově zachycen jímacím vrtem o hloub­ce
pouhých 7,8 metru pod podlahou kolonády.

Die Mineralquelle hiess ursprünglich die Neue Quelle,
obwohl sie schon im 16. Jahrhundert bekannt war.
Das ist die berühmte Neue Quelle, auf die sich im 18.
und 19. Jahrhundert die Aufmerksamkeit aller Kurgäste
konzentrierte. Seit dem Jahre 1748 stand über der
Quelle die hölzerne Kolonnade der Neuen Quelle.
Direkt an der Quelle hielten Ihre Sprechstunden
Kurärzte - unter ihnen auch David Becher.
Die Trinkkur wurde allmählich zum gesellschaftlichen Ereignis - die ursprüngliche hölzerne Kolonnade
wurde grösser gemacht (1793,1811) denn die Menge
der Patienten war sehr hoch. Schliesslich wurde
diese Quelle in die Mühlbrunnkolonnade eingegliedert, die vom Architekten Josef Zítek aus Prag
entworfen und erbaut wurde (1871-1881). Doch die
priviligierte Stellung der Neuen Quelle wurde schon
damals von der Mühlbrunnquelle übernommen.
Das Wasser aus der Quelle verlor sich unter den
Anschwemmungen des Flusses Tepl. Im Jahre 1746
wurde die Quelle auf Anlass des Karlsbader Arztes
Springfeld in ein hölzernes Reservoir aufgefangen
und in der Trinkkur verwendet. Springfeld selbst
nahm die chemische Analyse des Wassers vor und
bevorzugte seine Heilkraft vor der des Sprudels.
Im Jahre 1762 wurde das Reservoir umgebaut. Der
Auftrieb des Wassers war dann so gross, das es 3
Klafter höher stieg (früher musste man das Wasser
direkt aus dem Reservoir in die Krüge schöpfen).
Doch das Wasser aus der Quelle verbreitete einen
unangenehmen Geruch - es roch nach verdorbenen
Eiern. Ein Teil des Reservoirs wurde nämlich aus
Kiefernholz angefertigt. Durch die Reaktion des
Kiefernholzes mit Thermalwasser entstand Schwe­
felwasserstoff. Später wurde Kiefernholz mit Liden­
holz ersetzt, doch der Geruch blieb. Trotz diesen
Erfahrungen benutzte man Lindenholz bis zu den
60. Jahren des 19. Jahrhunderts.
Die Nymphenquelle (nach dem zweiten Weltkrieg wurde die Neue Quelle umbenannt) wurde im Jahre 1984
mit einer 7,8 m tiefen Bohrung neu aufgefangen.
Despite the fact the spring has been known since
16th century, it was initially called The New
Spring. It is the famous New Spring on which the
attention of all spa guests concentrated in the 18th
and 19th centuries. Since 1748 a wooden colonnade of the New Spring was standing above it. Spa
doctors had their surgeries right at the spring.
David Becher, a famous Karlovy Vary polyhistor,
was one of them. The drinking cure became a social event - the original wooden colonnade had to
be extended (1793, 1811) because it was constantly crowded with patients. Later the spring became
a part of the Mill Colonnade. The Mill Colonnade
(1871-1881) was planned and built by the architect Josef Zítek. The privileged position of the New
Spring was later taken over by the Mill Spring.
The water of the New Spring was hidden under
the alluvia of the Teplá river. In 1746 Karlovy
Vary doctor Springfeld initiated the collection of
the spring. A wooden reservoir was built and the
spring started to be used in the drinking cure.
Doctor Springfeld himself made a chemical analysis of the mineral water and he preferred the curative power of the New Spring to the Sprudel.
In 1762 the reservoir was rebuilt and water rose some
feet higher thanks to its own upper pressure (the jars
were filled with water right in the reservoir before).
But the water gave out an unpleasant smell - it
smelt like bad eggs. The smell was caused by
hydrogen sulphide which came into being through
the reaction of pine wood and mineral water.
(A part of the reservoir was made of pine wood).
Pine wood was later replaced with linden wood
but the smell didn‘t disappear. In spite of it linden
wood was used up to the 60s of the 19th century.
After the World War II the New Spring was renamed and it started to be called the Nymph Spring.
In 1984 a new well was made and the water was
held at a height of 7,8 m under the floor of the
colonnade.

Thun Studio Karlovarský porcelán

aložení porcelánky v Lesově spadá do období vrcholného rozvoje porcelánové
výroby počátkem 20. století. Do historie českého porcelánu se zapisuje zla­
tým písmem až po druhé světové válce, kdy v budovách zaniklé porcelánky
Lenhard vzniká v roce 1956 vývojové středisko Karlovarského porcelánu. Pracují
zde špičkoví modeláři, realizující nový estetický pohled na tvarování a vzhled.
Špičkový design přináší úspěch zejména na světové výstavě EXPO ‘58 v Bruselu,
kde vývojový tým obdržel Grand Prix a zlatou medaili.
Po roce 1995, s novým vlastníkem, vzniká nová koncepce výroby pod značkou Thun
Studio Karlovarský porcelán. Jeho produkce svými vysokými nároky na řemeslné
zpracování vyžaduje manufakturní či ateliérový způsob výroby. Práce unikátního
designu a vysoké estetické úrovně, zpravidla v limitovaných sériích, nesou rukopis
­akademického sochaře Jiřího Laštovičky, člena Mezinárodní ­akademie keramiky.
Produkce Thun Studia tak sbírá řadu ocenění, je vyhledávaným artiklem sběratelů,
je zastoupena ve sbírkách muzeí.
Ve studiu se pravidelně konají doprovodné akce MFF či Mezinárodní konvicové
sympózium. Mimořádnou úroveň a kvalitu práce zdejších mistrů potvrzují takové
zakázky, jakými jsou servis pro prezidenta republiky a Pražský hrad, pro španělský
královský palác či zastupitelské úřady v zahraničí.

ie Gründung der Porzellanfabrik in Lesov fällt in die Zeit der Höch­sten­t­
wicklung der Porzellanerzeugung am Anfang des 20. Jahrhunderts. In der
Historie des tschechischen Porzellans begann sie erst nach dem zweiten
Weltkrieg eine wichtige Rolle zu spielen, nachdem in den Gebäuden der ehemali­
gen Porzellanfabrik Lenhard ein Designer-Zentrum der Firma Karlovarský porcelán
ge­gründet worden war. Es arbeiten hier Top-Designers, die ein neues ästhetisches
Herantreten an die Formung und das Aussehen durchsetzten. Das Top-Design
brachte Erfolge vor allem auf der Weltaus­stellung EXPO ‘58 in Brüssel, wo das Team
den Grand Prix und eine goldene Medaille erhielt.
Nach dem Jahre 1995 mit einem neuen Besitzer, entstand eine ­neue Konzeption
der Produktion unter der Marke Thun Studio Karlovarský porcelán. Wegen der ho­
hen Ansprüche an die handwerkliche Verarbeitung erfordert diese Produktion eine
Manufaktur oder ein Studio. Die Arbeiten von einzigartigem Design und hohem
ästheti­schen Standard zumeist in limitierten Serien, tragen die Handschrift des

a­ kademischen Bildhauers Jiří Laštovička, des Mitglieds der Internationalen
Akademie der Keramik. Die Produktion des Studios Thun sammelt zahlreiche Preise
und ist ein beliebter Artikel von Sammlern. Sie ist auch in den Sammlungen vieler
Museen vertreten.
Im Studio finden regelmässig die zum Internationalen Filmfestival gehörenden
Veranstaltungen oder das Internationale Kannensym­po­sium statt. Solche
Bestellungen wie das Service für den Präsidenten der Tschechischen Republik und
die Prager Burg, für die spanische Königsburg oder Vertre­tungsbehörden im
Ausland bestätigen den aussergewöhnlichen Standard und Qualität der Arbeit hie­
siger Meister.

he foundation of the porcelain factory in Lesov falls into the period of the
boom in porcelain production in the early 20th century. It was only after World
War II that it started to play an important role in the history of Czech porcelain
after a development centre of the company Karlovarský porcelán had been esta­
blished in the buildings of the former porcelain factory Lenhard in 1956. Top mo­
dellers who worked here put a new aesthetic view of shaping and appearance into
practice.
Top design brought success especially at the world exhibition EXPO ‘58 in Brussels
where the team won the Grand Prix and a gold medal.
After 1995, with a new owner, a new conception of production with the brand name
Thun Studio Karlovarský porcelán came into being. Owing to its high demands for
craftsmanship, its products have to be made either in a manufacture or in a studio.
The work of unique design and high aesthetic quality, usually in limited series,
­bears the handwriting of the academic sculptor Jiří Laštovička, a member of
the International Academy of Ceramics. That is why the products of the Thun studio
get a number of awards, is popular with collectors and represented in the collec­
tions of museums.
Supporting events of the International Film Festival or the International
Jug Symposium are regularly held in the studio. Such orders like the service for
the President of the Czech Republic, for the Prague Castle, the Spanish royal palace
or ­diplomatic corps ­abroad confirm the exceptional quality and standard of local
masters’ work.
