AN INTERVIEW WITH IAN CHURCHILL
For readers who aren’t familiar with
you or your work can you explain
who you are and what you do?
Tell us a Little about the process
from idea concept, are you given a
script, how do the words come to life?
My name is Ian Churchill and I work in the comic
book industry creating, writing, drawing and colouring
comic books. Although the industry is a global one, I
work mostly for American companies such as Marvel
Comics and DC comics.
It varies according to who you’re working with and in
which capacity. When I’m just drawing, the writer will
email a plot which describes the characters and what
they are doing along with dialogue and my job is to
break it down into sequential panels that allow the
reader to follow the story as easily as possible. Once
I’ve finished my part, the pencil work is then inked
and scanned into the computer where it is sent off for
colouring and lettering then finally off to the printer.
Occasionally I do everything myself which is the same
order as I just explained except when I write a story I
tend to write it and draw it both at the same time.
You were a graphic designer, how
did you make the leap into graphic
novels/comics?
I had always wanted to be a comic book illustrator
and took a chance when the economic recession of
the early 1990’s hit. I whipped up some sample pages
and took them to a prominent comic convention in
London. After watching other hopefuls being reviewed
I got in the line of the editor who made the most
sense to me with his appraisals. To cut a long story
short, he turned out to be the editor of the X-Men line
of books at Marvel Comics and he pretty much hired
me on the spot! I was very lucky to be in the right
place at the right time with the right style of drawing
for that particular time in the industry and I have been
woking in comics ever since.
Blatant name dropping, who have you
and do you work with?
I could rattle off a whole list of people but to anyone
not into comics it would just be a bunch of names. The
two names outside of comics I have worked with that
people might recognise are Jeph Loeb (who wrote the
Original Teen Wolf movie, the Arnold Schwarzenegger
movie Commando and is now in control of Marvel
Television) and Jonathan Ross who needs no
clarification…! Jonathan is a long time comic book
fan and finally took the plunge and began writing
comics a handful of years ago to much acclaim. I
worked with him on a very adult comic book called
REVENGE and will be collaborating with him again
somewhere down the line.
You’ve drawn for Awesome Comics,
Image Comics, DC Comics and Marvel
Comics. Which is your favourite hero
or villain?
At Awesome comics I was plotting and drawing a
group of characters I created myself, called The Coven.
At Image Comics, the same scenario - A character I
created called MARINEMAN. At DC I enjoyed drawing
Superman and Supergirl and at Marvel, the Avengers
and Red Hulk were fun to draw.
What inspired you to create your own
graphic novel?
My love of the sea! I always wanted to be a marine
biologist when I was a kid, along with wanting to draw
comics, so it wasn’t long before I combined my love
of the two things. I created MARINEMAN when I was
eight years old and he was one of those characters
that I couldn’t put down or stop tinkering with! A few
years ago I was given the opportunity to get him into
publication by Image Comics which was a dream come
true and shortly after was nominated for an Eisner
award, which in comics is the equivalent of an Oscar
nomination!

As a kid who influenced your work
and now as an adult?
Outside of comics the book illustrator Arthur Rackham
was a huge influence on me growing up and in comics
John Romita , John Byrne, Steve Ditko and many more
besides. As an adult I’m always learning new ways to
do things but I don’t look to anyone in particular as an
influence. These days I do my OWN thing.
If people want to buy your work
how do they?
It’s easier than ever to get comics these days. Any
good comic store is the obvious way but also comics
are getting more and more popular on digital devices.
Comixology is the leading legal app to get comics from
digitally. Any good bookstore is able to order graphic
novels for you and online Amazon and other similar
shopping sites can satisfy your comic book needs!
Actually, If you happen to be local to the Chichester
area a new comic shop has just opened at the end of
North Street called the CGC Emporium where you can
order, purchase and read your comics while sipping a
tasty beverage!

We often forget what a beautiful part of the
country that we live and work in, visitors tell
us how lucky we are to live by the seaside and
have great views of the South Downs. However,
there’s more to do - Bognor Regis is a town on
the move investing considerable sums of public
and private sector cash in rejuvenating itself. The
town is becoming a more welcoming place with
improvements to London Rd and the Station
forecourt, existing businesses are investing in
their properties to make them more presentable
for example the Grade Two listed Station
building will be undergoing a £1.5M renovation
to provide a fantastic welcome to our visitors.
New businesses are opening up in town such as
Sports Direct, Mountain Warehouse and Tonsorial
Parlour – the number of empty shops is down from a
high of 35 to 23. Out of town retailers such as Next
and M&S have opened up recently and prestigious car
maker Rolls Royce have invested in a new Technology
Centre. Butlins have invested into their resort with
new hotels, restaurants and attractions over the past
five years and are attracting a new customer base.
There is a lovely new café in Hotham Park which is
receiving some excellent reviews and the town has
put on some fantastic events from markets, music,
dance to the audacious Aerial Birdman – a 150m zip
slide, with people “flying” through the high street!
Bognor Regis aims to be a premier seaside town
– drawing on its history, but embracing its modern
identity. This modern identity is epitomised by the
energy and momentum that has built up over the past
few years resulting in huge investments with more to
come, such as the new £20M Engineering and Digital

In 2010 Christina hung up her sails and established
Task Angels, followed by Guardian Angel Carers in
2012, when she realised that many clients, needed a

paintings, drawings and ceramics
Local artist and designer Joanne Webb has
just launched a apparel range and shopping
cart called ‘Sangha Lane’. Teaming up with
a company in New York the collection is
rather unique.
My work has been exhibited in Guildford,
Witley, Chichester and Steep. I am currently
studying for an NFCE in creative crafts using
textiles. Cobbled Lane has a number of my
framed art pieces for sale, visit them to see a
selection of handmade teddies, each unique,
with their own character and movable joints.
I work with the themes that inspire me the most;
i.e. long, solitary, wandering walks as a small
child - slightly unauthorised outings - usually
involving the search for interesting “finds” and
hour after hour holed-up in a favourite ditch,
musing and mulling over the troublesome
things in life.
Framed Drypoint artworks are also available. I have
recently been experimenting with this technique
and Mezzotint printing adding pen and paper in
an attempt to give a contemporary twist on a more
traditional technique creating a layered effect which
makes the main image bounce off the page.
Because the way I hand-build and decorate, my
earthenware works are very time-consuming creations
(I don’t make more than 15 pots in the year). I don’t
have a wheel, but I can hand-build most of the shapes
I want and I quite like the slightly wonky and organic
outcomes.

To maintain the rich and subtle colours of the velvet
underglazes, I work with a very white clay and
sometimes also apply a white slip before bisque
firing. The pigment brushes on in a very similar way to
watercolour, so I’ve recently begun painting directly
onto my bowls and vases with the same imagery that
I’m exploring in my 2D work. A large piece takes me
about 15 hours to decorate and is a complete one-off.
The strap line is ‘Clothes for artists, the brave and
the bold’ and they are just that! Each garment has
a different pattern, all derived from small collages
on paper and no two are the same! Joanne is a
surreal artist , paintings, prints, framed or unframed
are also available online! One to watch!

Windmill Pet Supplies is a local family run
business situated at windmill shopping village
in Barnham. We are brother and sister, with
Steve mainly responsible for the running of the
shop while Gina is often out and about walking
dogs and doing home visits for busy clients.
Together we have over twenty years experience in
retail and feel we can offer good customer service.
The business is brand new and we have been trading
for ten months only, but are already looking to
expand in the very near future.
We specialise in selling a variety of pet foods
and accessories and stock some popular foods
including JAMES WELLBELOVED, ROYAL CANIN,
BURNS, NATUREDIET and NUTRIMENT which is a
frozen food of just natural raw meat (proven to be
extremely beneficial for dogs).
We sell some small live animals sourced from local
breeders and are in the process of breeding our own
rabbits. We have kept rabbits at home for the last
seventeen years and they are of particular interest
to Gina.
Our dog walking service has proved to be very
popular and we are both insured and CRB checked
for this service.
We also offer boarding at home for small pets.
Gina has studied small animals at college and has
qualifications including a Diploma for Animal Care,
and is currently doing a course on dog behaviour.
