HERZLICH WILLKOMMEN
WELCOME
Sie wollten schon immer einmal wissen, wie man den original kubanischen Cocktail-Klassiker „Mojito“ mixt? - Kein Problem, denn wir haben extra zu diesem
Zweck eine „Mojito“-Embassy auf dem Gelände eingerichtet. Schwerpunkt in
diesem Jahr ist die Karibikinsel Kuba, die musikalisch mit sechs facettenreichen
Bands, allen voran der international gefeierte Raul Paz, vertreten sein wird. Eng ist
Kuba auch heute noch mit dem schwarzen Kontinent verbunden. Im 16. Jahrhundert wurden über 850.000 Sklaven, vor allem aus dem heutigen Kongo und Nigeria nach Kuba verschleppt. Diese prägten die dortige Kultur nachhaltig. Weiteres
Hintergrundwissen bietet das ARTE Kinozelt, wo 10 spannende Filme sich mit
dem Thema Kuba beschäftigen. Auch lohnt sich der Besuch der sehenswerten
Fotoausstellung „Cuba Mi Amor“.
Ein weiterer Schwerpunkt wird Südafrika sein. Drei südafrikanische Bands, die
Sängerin Lebo, die junge Band Hot Water und die große Jazz-Legende Hugh
Masekela, werden schon am ersten Festivaltag für einen heißen Auftakt sorgen. Zwei sehr außergewöhnliche Ausstellungen zu Nelson Mandela runden den
Schwerpunkt Südafrika ab. Nach einem kleinen köstlichen Schluck südafrikanischen Rotweins auf dem Gelände kann man an den weiteren Festivaltagen mit
Lura, Lokua Kanza und Tiken Jah Fakoly weitere international bekannte Stars im
Hauptzelt erleben. Wir haben wieder sehr viel Wert darauf gelegt, dass von den
20 gastierenden Bands ein sehr großer Teil für weibliche Stimmen und Musikerinnen reserviert wurde. Es freut uns auch, das viele Bands sich das erste Mal in
Deutschland „live” der Öffentlichkeit präsentieren werden.

Auf dem Festivalgelände wird es weitere interessante Veränderungen und
Neuerungen geben. Die senegalesische Modeschöpferin Rama Diaw lädt zur
Modenschau mit ihren neuesten Kollektionen, diesmal gleich neben dem HavanaClub, ein. In der neuen Bambushalle wird man wieder interessante Infostände
finden. Wer eine Erholungspause braucht, ist in der Entspannungs-Oase genau
richtig. Hier unter Schatten bietenden Bäumen oder im marokkanischen Königszelt kann man gemütlich bei einer Tasse Pfefferminztee chillen, den HennaMalerinnen oder Haarzopf-Flechterinnen bei ihrer Arbeit zuschauen oder die fröhliche Straßenparade von Adesa bestaunen. Alle anderen beliebten Africa Festival
Highlights, ob Basar, Havana-Club, Kinderzelt oder die afrikanisch-kulinarische
Verköstigungsarea, sind wie jedes Jahr mit dabei.
Der Fernsehsender ARTE ist Partner des Africa Festivals. Auch in diesem Jahr
überträgt „ARTE Concert” die wichtigsten Konzerte des Festivals unter concert.
arte.tv und im ARTE Kinozelt werden Filme zu Kuba gezeigt.

You’ve always wanted to know how to mix the classic original
Cuban cocktail, “mojito”, right? No problem, as we’ve set up an
extra “mojito embassy” on the premises for this very reason. The
focus this year is on the Caribbean island of Cuba, which will be
represented musically by six multi-faceted bands, headlined by
the internationally-acclaimed Raul Paz. Cuba still has close ties
to Africa today. Over 850,000 slaves were transported to Cuba
in the 16th century, with the majority coming from the modernday Congo and Nigeria. They’ve left a lasting impression on the
local culture. Further background information will be offered by the
ARTE cinema tent, where 10 exciting films will deal with the topic
of Cuba. The photo exhibition “Cuba Mi Amor” is also worth a visit.
A further focus will be on South Africa. Three South African bands
– the singer Lebo, the young band Hot Water and the great jazz
legend Hugh Masekela – will get the festival off to a fiery start on
the first day. The South African focus will be rounded off with two
quite extraordinary exhibitions on Nelson Mandela. After a delicious little sip of South African red wine, you can experience even
more world-famous stars in the main tent over the course of the
festival days to come, with the likes of Lura, Lokua Kanza and
Tiken Jah Fakoly. We’ve once again found it very important that a
considerable amount of the 20 guest bands is made up of female
voices and musicians. We’re also glad that many bands will be
performing live for the first time in front of a German audience.
There will be other interesting changes and novelties on the festival grounds. The Senegalese fashion designer, Rama Diaw, invites
you to her fashion show with her latest collections, which will take
place this time right next to the Havana Club. You’ll be able to find
interesting info-booths again in the new bamboo hall. The relaxation oasis is the perfect place for those who need a little break. You
can chill out there under the shade of the trees or in the Moroccan
royal tent with a cup of peppermint tea, or you can watch the henna
artists and hair braiders at work or marvel at the joyful street parades
of Adesa. All the other popular Africa Festival highlights, such as the
bazaar, the Havana Club, the children’s tent and the African culinary
tasting area are on the programme just like every year.

The German television broadcaster ARTE is a partner of the Africa
Festival. “ARTE Concert” will be broadcasting the festival’s biggest
concerts once again this year on concert.arte.tv and at the ARTE
cinema tent films about Cuba will be shown.

Es ist unmöglich, Hot Water nur zuzuhören.
Denn wenn Donovan Copley, der Gründer,
Frontmann und das kreative Herz der Gruppe
anfängt zu singen und zu spielen (oft spielt
er seine kultige afrikanische Gitarre), auf der
Bühne swingt und herumspringt, und von einer
außergewöhnlichen Mischung südafrikanischer
Musiker unterstützt wird, die so unterschiedlich
sind wie das Land selbst, kann man einfach
nicht still sitzen bleiben! Die Musik – Copley
nennt sie „South African Folk Rock” – vermischt Klänge und Rhythmen von Mbaqanga,
Kwela und Maskanda mit einem zeitgemäßen
Folkrock Vibe der absolut tanzbar ist. Alles
wird durch Copley’s raue, süße Stimme und
inspirierende, beinahe traumgleiche Texte
miteinander verwoben. „Mit Abstand eines der

Because when Donovan Copley, the band’s
founder, frontman and creative heart, starts
singing, playing (often his iconic African guitar),
jiving and jumping around on stage, backed up by
a mix of stellar South African musicians as diverse
as the country itself, you can’t sit still…! The music
– Copley calls it “South African Folk-Rock” – layers
the sounds of traditional mbaqanga, kwela and
maskanda with a more contemporary folk-rock
vibe and utterly danceable rhythms, mixed with
Copley’s raw, sweet voice and inspiring, almost
dreamlike lyrics…“Easily one of the most exciting

Das Rolling Stone Magazin beschreibt den
Mann mit dem Flügelhorn als einen der
aufregendsten Live Performer! Er wurde
zweimal mit dem Grammy ausgezeichnet und gilt als der wichtigste Jazz- und
Weltmusikmusiker Afrikas. Der Künstler,
der seinen 77. Geburtstag feiert, spielte
schon mit Sängerinnen wie Miriam Makeba
und Nina Simone und trat mit Jazzgrößen
wie Miles Davis und John Coltrane auf.
Wir freuen uns, dass Hugh Masekela zum
dritten Mal das Publikum auf dem Africa
Festival begeistern wird. Zusammen mit
seiner außergewöhnlichen Band wird er
neben tanzbarem Afro Beat einen wunderbaren südafrikanischen Township Jazz von
seiner aktuellen CD präsentieren.

performers. The two times Grammy-awarded
artist is Africa’s most important jazz and world
musician. The artist who will celebrate his
77th birthday, already played together with
star singers such as Miriam Makeba and Nina
Simone and jazz stars such as Miles Davis and
John Coltrane. We are delighted to announce
that Hugh Masekela will enthuse the audience of the Africa Festival for the third time.

CAPE VERDE ISLANDS
Lura erblickte als Kind kapverdischer Eltern in
Lissabon das Licht der Welt. Das afrikanische
Inselblut war ihr so schon in die Wiege gelegt
worden. Mit 17 begann ihre Gesangskarriere,
als der aus Sao Tomé & Principe stammende
Sänger Juka sie für ein Duett buchte. Es folgten
mehrere Kooperationen, zu denen Künstler
wie Bonga, Tito Paris und die unvergessene
Cesaria Evora gehörten. Mit ihrem mehrfach
ausgezeichneten Album „Di Korpu Ku Alma“
startete sie 2005 auch als Solokünstlerin durch.
2007 trat sie zum ersten Mal sehr erfolgreich
beim 19. Africa Festival auf. Während die
meisten Sängerinnen von den Kapverden mehr
die melancholischen Töne der Inseln anschlagen, wird uns Lura mit ihren aus traditionellen
Batuku- und Funaná-Elementen gewürzten
Songs zeigen, dass auf den Kapverden auch
das afrikanische Rhythmusfeuer lodert.

Lura was born in Lisbon. Her parents are from the
Cape Verde Islands, thus she inherited the blood
from the African islands. When she was 17, she
started her career as a singer when Juka, who
was born in Sao Tomé & Principe, booked her
for a duet. Many collaborations with artists like
Bonga, Tito Paris, as well as the unforgettable
Cesaria Evora followed. In 2005, she started her
solo career with her album “Di Korpu Ku Alma”
which received a number of awards. In 2007, she
performed successfully at the 19th Africa Festival.
While the songs of most singers from the Cape
Verde Islands are more melancholic, Lura will
show us with her songs, which feature Batuku and
Funaná elements, that the African rhythm fire also
blazes on the Cape Verde Islands.

Africa Festival mitbringen.

Der Sänger und Gitarrist Pascal Lokua Kanza
stammt aus dem Kongo. Nach seinem Studium
am Kinshasa Music Conservatory siedelte er
nach Paris über und studierte dort Jazz. Ab
1991 spielte er bei der Soul Makossa Gang
von Manu Dibango. Sein Debütalbum erschien
1994 und wurde bei den African Music Awards
als „Best African Album“ ausgezeichnet. Zum
ersten Mal begeisterte er 1995 das Publikum
des Africa Festivals mit seinen poetischen
und sanften Balladen. Auch als Produzent ist
er wegen seines ausgeprägten musikalischen
Gefühls bei vielen afrikanischen Künstlern
gefragt. Er ist einer der beliebtesten Künstler
des Festivals. Auf vielfachen Wunsch haben
wir ihn wieder eingeladen. Er wird seine Tochter
Maleika mitbringen, die schon auf der offenen
Bühne des Festivals zu hören war.

The singer and guitar player Pascal Lokua Kanza
was born in Congo. After his studies at the
Kinshasa Music Conservatory he relocated to Paris
and studied jazz music. From 1991 he played with
the Soul Makossa Band of Manu Dibango. His
debut album was released in 1994 and awarded
“Best African Album“ at the African Music Awards.
For the first time he enthused the audience at the
Africa Festival in 1995 with his poetic and soft ballads. He is also in great demand as a producer for
many African artists because of his distinct musical
sense. He is one of the most popular artists of the
festival. By popular request we invited him again.
He will bring along his daughter Maleika who has
already performed at the open stage before.

Mittlerweile ist Doumbia Moussa Fakoly zu einer
der wichtigsten Stimmen des afrika
nischen
Kontinents geworden. Mit seinen engagierten
Texten legt er die Finger in die Wunden und
Missstände Afrikas und mobilisiert so gerade
die Jugend an ihrer sozialen und politischen
Lage etwas zu verändern. Leider musste er
durch seine Offenheit 2003 seine Heimatstadt
Odienné im Norden der Elfenbeinküste verlassen und ins Exil nach Mali gehen. Nun lebt
der Sohn eines Griots in Bamako und hat von
seinem Studio dort aus auch sein letztes Projekt „Racines“, eine Hommage an die großen
Reggae-Künstler wie Bob Marley oder B
urning
Spear, bis nach Jamaika hinaus getragen.
Nach seinen energiegeladenen Auftritten 2001
und 2006 wird er auch diesmal das Publikum
mit seinem feinen Roots Reggae „Made in
Westafrica“ begeistern!

Doumbia Moussa Fakoly has become one of the
most important voices of the African continent.
With his driven lyrics he brings up the grievances of
Africa and thus mobilizes young people to change
something about their social and political status.
Unfortunately he had to leave his hometown
Odienné in the North of the Ivory Coast in 2003
because of his outspokenness and was exiled to
Mali. Now the son of a griot lives in Bamako. In
his studio he recorded his last project “Racines”,
which is a great hommage to reggae artists like
Bob Marley or Burning Spear, and brought it to
places as far away as Jamaica. After his energetic
performances in 2001 and 2006 he will once again
enthuse the audience with his fine roots reggae
made in West Africa!

Orishas waren bis zu ihrer Auflösung 2009
weltweite Megastars und die bis dato erfolgreichste Hip-Hop Band aus Kuba. Sie
spielten mit großem Erfolg zum ersten Mal in
Deutschland 2000 auf dem 12. Africa Festival.
Jetzt hat sich ein Großteil der originalen Formation neu zusammengeschlossen. Unter dem
Namen Cuban Beats All Stars (CBAS) holte sich
die Band noch den Ausnahmemusiker, MultiInstrumentalisten, Sänger und Komponisten
Nelson Palacios ins Boot. Eine spannende
Mischung aus typisch kubanischen Klängen
mit verschiedenen Instrumenten, gemischt mit
elektronischen Sounds, Samples und fetten
Urban- und Electronic-Beats!

Until their break up in 2009, Orishas were worldwide mega stars and the most successful hip-hop
band from Cuba. Their successful performance
at the 12th Africa Festival in 2000 was their first
appearance in Germany. Now the majority of the
original members have formed a new band. They
called themselves Cuban Beats All Stars (CBAS)
and managed to get the exceptional musician,
singer and composer Nelson Palacios on board
who also plays various instruments. An exciting
mixture of typical Cuban sounds and different
instruments combined with electronic sounds,
samples and fat urban beats!

Als der kubanische Sänger und Komponist Raul Paz im Jahr 2005 erstmals beim
Africa Festival gastierte, lebte er noch in
Frankreich. Inzwischen ist er nach Havanna
zurückgekehrt – der Stadt, die aktuell
eine große kulturelle und musikalische
Erneuerung erlebt. Mit seinem Musikstil gilt
er als einer der bedeutendsten Vertreter der
neuen kubanischen Musik. Mit nur wenig
Werbung sind seine Konzerte in Kuba in
Windeseile ausverkauft. Auf seiner neuen
CD „Ven Ven“, die er beim 28. Africa Festival
vorstellen wird, mixt Raul Paz einen aktuellen Karibik-Cocktail mit den Zutaten Latino
Pop, Salsa, Socca, Reggae und Rumba.
Immer dabei - fette Bläsersets und eine
exzellente Perkussionscombo. Eine herrliche „Noche Cubana“ zum Tanzen!

When the Cuban singer and composer Raul
Paz performed at the Africa Festival for the first
time in 2005, he was still living in France. In
the meantime, he has returned to Havana, the
city which is currently experiencing a great cultural and musical renewal. His style of music
makes him one of the most important representatives of new Cuban music. His concerts
in Cuba sell out, even with little advertising. On
his new CD “Ven Ven“, which he will perform
at the 28th Africa Festival, Raul Paz mixes a
modern Caribbean cocktail with the ingredients Latino pop, salsa, socca, reggae and
rumba. His songs always feature fat horn sets
and excellent percussionists. It will be a great
“noche cubana“ of dancing!

the small town of Mari
shane in the province of
Limpopo. Although she
was still mostly singing to her beloved cows as a little girl, she moved to Europe when she was 17.
She quickly found her feet in Hamburg and broke into the local music scene there. After collaborating
with Nneka, Dube, the Sisters and Adé Bantu, she’s now carrying out her own projects, and she’ll be
presenting us with songs from her new album, “Sister Gwen”, to get our festival underway.

LENI STERN’S
AFRICAN TRIO
GERMAN JAZZ MEETS THE MALI BLUES ROOTS
Als die deutsche Jazz- und Blues-Gitarristin Leni Stern 2006 beim „Festival au Desert“ in Mali
auftrat, war es um sie geschehen. Dort jammte sie mit Salif Keita und Baaba Maal. Musik,
Land und Leute ließen sie nicht mehr los. Später lernte sie von Bassekou Kouyaté und dessen Frau Amy Sacko die Ngoni kennen, lieben und spielen. Mit Bassist Mamadou Ba und dem
Percussionisten Alioune Faye ist sie nun eindrucksvoll selbst auf westafrikanischen Spuren
unterwegs.
When German jazz and blues guitarist Leni Stern performed at the “Festival au Desert“ in Mali she
was really smitten. There she played with Salif Keita and Baaba Maal and she was immediately
mesmerized by the music, country and people. Later she was introduced to the ngoni by Bassekou
Kouyate and his wife Amy Nacko. She learned how to play it and love it. Now she is cooperating
with bassist Mamadou Ba and percussionist Alioune Faye and is following the West African roots in
a very impressive way.

Der Vater aus Guinea, die Mutter von den Kapverden, doch Karyna Silva Gomes Cerqueira
selbst erblickte in Guinea-Bissau das Licht der Welt. Erste musikalische Schritte im Chor
einer Gospelband und ihre Mitgliedschaft in Adriano Ferreiras bekannter Band Super Mama
Djombo waren das Sprungbrett zu ihrer jetzigen Solokarriere. „My music from Guinea-Bissau“
so beschreibt sie selbst ihre Fusion-Songs, in denen sie Traditionelles wie Modernes aus ihrer
Heimat vorstellen wird. Zum ersten Mal präsentiert das Africa Festival eine Gruppe aus GuineaBissau.
Her father comes from Guinea, her mother from the Cape Verde Islands, but Karyna Silva Gomes
Cerqueira was born in Guinea-Bissau. Her first musical steps in the choir of a Gospel band and her
membership in Adriano Ferreira’s band Super Mama Djombo were the stepping stones to her solo
career. She describes her fusion songs as “My music from Guinea-Bissau”. With her music she will
present traditional as well as modern influences from her home. The Africa Festival will feature a group
from Guinea-Bissau for the first time.

Ob Youssou N’Dour, MC Solar, Meiway, Papa Wemba, Koffi Olomidé oder der große Manu
Dibango, in Paris gibt es kaum einen afrikanischen Künstler, der nicht schon ihre hervorragende Stimme als Backingvocal-Sängerin in Anspruch genommen hat. Kein Wunder, dass

schon früh von ihrem Vater, dem sympathischen Fusion Jazz- & Reggae-Musiker Wally Warning
von der Karibikinsel Aruba, gefördert. Die mittlerweile 20-jährige Sängerin interpretiert ihren
feinfühligen akustischen Soul & Worldmusic-Folk im Stil einer Ayo. Auf dem Festival wird sie
ihre neue CD vorstellen, die im Frühjahr erscheinen wird.
Youssou N’Dour, MC Solar, Meiway, Papa Wemba, Koffi Olomidé or the great Manu Dibango - there
is hardly any African artist in Paris who hasn’t worked with this excellent singer and backing vocal.
It is no surprise that it is now finally time for this singer to go her own way. She will perform her CD
“Djaale”, which is sung in Duala, with the sun of her home country Cameroon in her heart for the first
time at the Africa Festival.
In 2014 she was already celebrated for her first solo CD “Part of me” as newcomer of the year in the
German music scene. Her father, the friendly fusion jazz & reggae musician Wally Warning from the
Caribbean island Aruba, has already supported her playing the guitar and writing songs early on. Now
she is 20 years old and interprets her sensitive acoustic soul and world music folk in the style of Ayo.
At the Africa Festival she will perform her new CD which will be released in spring.

Diplomatensohn Dominik Haas, alias „Jahcoustix”, war schon in jungen Jahren durch die
Tätigkeit seines Vaters als Botschafter stets mit den unterschiedlichsten Kulturen, Menschen
und Strömungen in Kontakt gekommen. Ägypten, Ghana, New York, Mexiko und Liberia
waren seine Lebensstationen. Mit 19, in Kenia, lernte er den Reggae kennen und lieben. Seine
Kooperationen mit den Reggae Formationen Headcornerstone und Dubious Neighbourhood
ebneten ihm den Weg, als Solokünstler ebenfalls erfolgreich zu sein.
Dominik Haas aka “Jahcoustix” has already come into contact with different cultures, people and
streams when he was young due to his father being an ambassador. His stages of life were Egypt,
Ghana, New York, Mexico and Liberia. When he was 19 and living in Kenia he got to know and love
reggae. His cooperations with reggae groups Headcornerstone and Dubious Neighbourhood paved
his way to also become successful as a solo artist.

Rumba is the rhythm of the black slaves from Africa. The music was created in the black quarters
of Havana and Mantanza. Rumba combines music, rhythm, songs, dance and storytelling to form
one unit and social event. The music group Osain del Monte was founded in Havana in 2013. The

verbindet eine große Leidenschaft für die kubanische Musik. Neben energiegeladenen kubanischen Salsa präsentieren die professionellen Musikerinnen auch die Musikstile Cha-ChaCha, Mambo und Guaguanco, die den heutigen Salsa bereichert haben. Ein großer Bläserset,
feurige Perkussionistinnen, Sängerinnen und Tänzerinnen laden zum Tanzen ein und sorgen für

The band ZuleMax consisting of 12 women was founded by Zulema Hechavarria Blanco who is a
singer, flute player and percussionist from Santiago de Cuba. A great passion for Cuban music is what
connects the women of the band. Besides Cuban salsa the professional musicians also present the
musical styles cha-cha-cha, mambo and guaguanco which have enriched the salsa of today. A big
set of horns, fiery percussionists, singers and dancers invite the audience to dance along and have
an unforgettable party!

HISTORY
Cuba, the pearl of the Caribbean, has a colourful history. From Columbus right up to the revolution
in 1959, it had always been subject to foreign control. In an attempt to reach India by travelling in
a westerly direction, Christopher Columbus discovered the largest island in the Caribbean on 27
October 1492. The island, which he thought was an offshoot of Asia, was first named “Juana” in
honour of the heir to the Spanish throne, Don Juan. “Cuba”, which was derived from the Indian name
cubanacán, only came into usage at a later date. The colonisation known as the “conquista” by the
Spanish began in 1512 with the founding of the town of Baracoa by Diego Velázquez. The two biggest cities in Cuba today, Santiago de Cuba and La Habana, were subsequently founded in 1514 and
1515.
The native population of Arawak Indians was reduced within a few decades due to massacres
committed during punitive expeditions, infectious diseases that had been introduced and their deployment as workers for sugarcane farming from 1548. Their last leader, the Arawak Indian Hatuey, was
burned alive and is considered to be Cuba’s first freedom fighter. He rejected any attempts by a
Spanish monk to convert him to Christianity so he would go to heaven right before being placed on the
stake. He preferred not to die as a Christian so that he would at least rest in peace from the Spanish
and not have to meet his torturers again in paradise.

Kuba, die Perle der Karibik, blickt auf eine ereignisreiche Geschichte zurück. Von Kolumbus
bis zur Revolution 1959 ist sie von Fremdherrschaft gekennzeichnet. Christoph Kolumbus
entdeckte bei seinem Plan, Indien auf dem Westweg zu erreichen, am 27. Oktober 1492 die
größte Insel der Karibik. Die Insel, die er für einen Ausläufer Asiens hielt, bekam zu Ehren
des spanischen Thronerben Don Juan zunächst den Namen „Juana“. Das an die indianische
Bezeichnung cubanacán angelehnte „Kuba“ wurde erst später gebräuchlich. Die von den
Spaniern „conquista“ genannte Kolonisation setzte im Jahre 1512 mit der Gründung der Stadt
Baracoa durch Diego Velázquez ein. Bereits 1514 bzw. 1515 folgten die heute größten Städte
Santiago de Cuba und La Habana.

wollte, damit er in den Himmel komme, lehnte er ab. Er ziehe es vor, nicht als Christ zu sterben,
damit er wenigstens nach seinem Tode Ruhe vor den Spaniern habe und seinen Peinigern nicht
im Paradies erneut begegnen müsse.
Ein Drittel der Bevölkerung hat schwarze Hautfarbe
Wie bei den meisten karibischen Inseln war der Anbau von Zuckerrohr die Grundlage des großen
Reichtums der Kolonisatoren. Da bei der Zuckerrohrernte ein hoher Aufwand an Arbeitskraft
erforderlich war, begann ab 1620 die Versklavung und Verschiffung von Afrikanern hauptsächlich aus dem Kongo, Benin und Nigeria nach Kuba. Bis Mitte des 19. Jahrhunderts wurden über
850.000 Afrikaner in die karibischen Kolonien verschleppt. Der herrschenden rassistischen
Ideologie zufolge wurden Sklaven wie Waren behandelt und mit drakonischen Strafen gefügig
gemacht. Etwa 15 von 100 Sklaven kamen bereits beim Transport im sogenannten Dreiecks35

Beispiel die afrokubanische
Religion „Santeria“ gerade
in jüngster Zeit wieder vermehrt Anhänger und dürfte
inzwischen die Anzahl der
Christen in Kuba übertreffen.
Like most Caribbean islands, sugarcane farming was the source of the colonisers’ vast wealth. As
the harvesting of sugarcane required an abundance of manpower, Africans mainly from the Congo,
Benin and Nigeria began to be captured as slaves and shipped to Cuba from 1620 onwards. By the
middle of the 19th century, over 850,000 Africans had been transported to the Caribbean colonies.
Due to the prevailing racist ideology, slaves were treated like commodities and subjected to draconian
punishment. Some 15 to 100 slaves died during transportation as part of the so-called triangle trade
between Europe, Africa and the New World. Only a few were able to flee the plantations and create a
barren existence as “Cimarrones” (literally savages) in the mountains. By the mid 19th century, slaves
accounted for about 50 percent of the population of Cuba. The plans of white plantation owners
were beginning to pay off. From the end of the 17th century, Cuba was the largest sugar exporter
in the world. Slavery was only abolished in 1886 due to international pressure. Over time the African
population had a significant influence on the music, culture, eating habits and religion of the Cuban
population. Thus, for example, the Afro-Cuban religion “Santeria” has been revived in recent times and
is now likely to outnumber the Christian population in Cuba.

THE MUSIC
Die kubanische Musik entstand aus einer Mischung von afrikanischen und spanischen
Traditionen. Die spanischen Siedler hatten ihre eigene Musik nach Kuba mitgebracht. Besonders
populär war dabei stets die althergebrachte Tanzmusik, insbesondere der Bolero, der Zapateo und die Guajira. Mit der Ankunft der ersten Afrikaner kamen gänzlich verschiedene, aber
dennoch passende Aspekte dazu. Die Musik vom schwarzen Kontinent wurde meistens von
Trommeln, z. B. der eieruhrförmigen Bata und Schlaghölzern (Clave) und Gesang begleitet. Mit
der Zeit vermischten sich die spanische und afrikanische Musik wobei die Elemente der afrikanischen Musik unüberhörbar dominieren: es sind die Perkussioninstrumente, die den Takt
angeben und ohne die es in der kubanischen Musik überhaupt nicht geht! Aus dieser Mischung
entstand eine große Vielfalt von Musikstilen. Im Folgenden eine kurze Beschreibung einiger
Musikstile, die auf dem Africa Festival zu hören sind:
RUMBA:
Die Rumba ist die ursprünglichste Form schwarzer Musik auf Kuba. Ihr Rhythmus, der die
afrikanischen Wurzeln beschwört und ihr Gesang, fördern einen Trancezustand beim Zuhörer.
Rumbarhythmen (wie Guaganco, Yambu und Columbia) werden auch bei den afro-kubanischen Religionen wie Santeria, Palo und Abakua gespielt. Immer dabei sind drei Batatrommeln
und die Claves – zwei Rundhölzer, die den Rhythmus vorgeben.
SON:
Der Son vereint erstmals schwarze und weiße Musik in einer Stilrichtung. Der Son Cubano
entwickelte sich durch die Verschmelzung von afro-kubanischen Trommelrhythmen mit der
Gitarrenmusik spanischer Farmer im ländlichen Osten der Insel. Der Son war im Laufe der Zeit
aus dem öffentlichen Leben in Kuba weitgehend verschwunden – er wurde zur „Musik der
Alten“. Eine späte Blüte erlebte die Musik jedoch 1999 u.a. durch Wim Wenders Film „Buena
Vista Social Club“ der den Son auf einen Schlag besonders im Ausland populär machte.
SALSA:
Salsa-Musik ist energiegeladene lateinamerikanische Tanzmusik die in Kuba, Puerto Rico,
Venezuela und Kolumbien zu hören ist. Ein großer Bläserset, eine starke Rhythmus-Sektion
mit Congas, Timbales und Bongos sowie mehrere Sängerinnen und Sänger und Tänzerinnen
und Tänzer sorgen schnell dafür, dass es auf der Tanzfläche brodelt. Kubanische Salsa ist pure
Lebenslust, die die Sorgen im sozialistischen Alltag vergessen lässt. Die bekanntesten Salsagruppen in Kuba sind Van Van, Charanga Habanera und Azúcar Negra.
Wir freuen uns, dass wir auf dem Africa Festival mit sechs Bands die Vielfalt der kubanischen
Musik präsentieren können. Neben der traditionellen Musik wie Rumba (siehe S. 30) und Son
(siehe S. 12) werden wir auch aktuelle Trends der kubanischen Musik wie Hip Hop, Cumbia
(siehe S. 30) und Latin Pop (siehe S. 20) präsentieren. Alle eingeladenen Musiker zeichnen sich
durch ein hohes musikalisches Talent und exzellentes Handwerk aus, da in Kuba schon sehr
früh eine kostenlose Förderung von Musiktalenten in den staatlichen Musikschulen stattfindet.

Cuban music evolved out of a mixture of African and Spanish traditions. Spanish settlers
brought their own melodies and musical form
to Cuba. Traditional dance music, especially
the bolero, the zapateo and the guajira were
always highly popular. The first Africans also
brought different but nonetheless complementary elements with them. The music from the
black continent was mainly accompanied by
drumming, e.g. egg-timer-shaped bata and
claves as well as singing. Over time Spanish
music and Cuban music merged, with the elements of African music unmistakably dominating: these are the percussion instruments
that keep time and without which there would
be no Cuban music! A large variety of music
styles were created from this hybrid mix. A
short description of a few music styles which
can be heard at the Africa Festival is presented
below:
SON:
Son unites black and white music in one style
for the first time. Son Cubano developed due to
the merging of Afro-Cuban drum rhythms with
the guitar music of Spanish farmers in the rural
eastern region of the island. Over time, son largely faded from public life in Cuba - it became the “music
of the old”. The music, however, experienced a late rebirth in 1999, not least due to the Wim Wenders
film “Buena Vista Social Club”, which made son immediately popular, especially outside of Cuba.
SALSA:
Salsa music is Latin American dance music bristling with energy which can be heard in Cuba, Puerto
Rico, Venezuela and Columbia. A large wind section, a strong rhythm section with congas, timbales
and bongos, as well as many singers and dancers quickly ensure that the dance floor is on fire. Cuban

RuMBA:
Rumba is the most original form of black
music in Cuba. Its rhythm, which conjures up
African roots, and its singing leave the listener
in a trance state. Rumba rhythms (such as
guaganco, yambu and columbia) also accompany the rituals of Afro-Cuban religions such
as Santeria, Palo and Abakua. Three bata
drums and the claves – two logs which set the
rhythm - are always heard.
Kubanische Salsa Tänzer
salsa is pure zest for life, making one forget about everyday cares under a Socialist regime. The most
well-known salsa groups in Cuba are Van Van, Charanga Habanera and Azúcar Negra.
We are delighted to be able to showcase the sheer variety of Cuban music by presenting six bands
at the Africa Festival. Besides traditional music such as rumba (see p. 30) and son (see p. 12) we will
also showcase the latest trends in Cuban music such as hip hop, cumbia (see p. 30) and Latin pop
(see p. 20). All those involved are highly talented and skilled musicians. This is because Cuba began to
promote musical talent in the state music schools for free from a very early stage.

Mit seiner Fotoausstellung “Cuba Mi Amor” bietet Fotograf Mario Marino einen fantastischen
Einblick in das tägliche Leben in Kubas Hauptstadt Havanna. Marino zeigt „gewöhnliche“ Menschen, wie die Frau, die Eier verkauft, den Boxer und den Schuster. Anstatt eine Distanz zu
erzeugen verwendet er seine Kamera um Kontakt herzustellen. In Havanna spielt sich das tägli40
che Leben hauptsächlich auf der Straße ab. Mit seinen Fotos lädt uns Marino zu diesem Leben
ein. Er stellt die Stadt Havanna als eine „Grande Dame“ dar. Sicher, sie ist eine alte, dünne aber
dennoch straffe Dame und die Spuren eines intensiven Lebens sind deutlich erkennbar, aber
sie hat ihre Würde und ihren Stil nicht verloren und sie hat auf jeden Fall Marinos Herz erobert.
Mario Marino ist ein international bekannter Fotograf von Reiseporträts. Seit 2000 fotografiert
Marino verschiedene Menschen in ihren Heimatländern (Indien, Äthiopien, Kuba). Seine Bilder
werden weltweit in Museen und Galerien ausgestellt. Die Ausstellung „Cuba Mi Amor“ ist seine
Liebeserklärung an Kubas Hauptstadt Havanna.

Through the “Cuba Mi Amor” exhibition, photographer Mario Marino offers a splendid glimpse into
daily life in the Cuban capital, Havana. Marino has portrayed “regular” people, such as the lady selling
eggs, the boxer and the cobbler. Instead of creating distance, he uses his camera to make contact. In
Havana, day-to-day life unfolds largely in its streets. Through his photos, Marino invites us into that life.
He depicts the city Havana as a “grande dame”. Sure, she’s an elderly, skinny but toned lady and the
marks of an intense life are clearly visible, but she’s not lost her grandeur and style, and she has certainly conquered Marino’s heart. Mario Marino is an international known travel portrait photographer.
He has been photographing various people in their native lands since 2000. His work is exhibited in
museums and galleries around the world. The “Cuba Mi Amor” exhibition is his declaration of love for
the Cuban capital of Havana.
The Havana Club is a well established place to meet at the Africa Festival – it is all about Cuban rum
and Caribbean music. During the day, people meet to have a cup of coffee and to relax. Later at night,
it transforms into a disco bar, where various brands of rum and Cuban cocktails can be tasted, while
hot music is being played by our DJs. Thursday and Friday, DJ Lady Tania from Curaçao will heat up the
Club with a Caribbean atmosphere. Saturday and Sunday, Selector Manitou of the Lucky Punch Soundsystem plays salsa, merengue and reggaeton as well as afrobeats and reggae. Disco time at the Havana
Club is from Thursday to Saturday 9:00 p.m. to 2:00 a.m. and on Sunday 8:00 p.m. to 12:00 a.m.
Our “multi-tent” also catches the vibe at night – legendary DJ Hi John from Jamaica will celebrate a hot

gemütlichen Liegestühlen und rhythmischer kubanischer Musik lädt danach zum Entspannen

Kuba hat eine bemerkenswerte demographische Besonderheit: Hier leben weltweit die meisten
Hundertjährigen. Sind Musik, Liebe und Zigarren ein Geheimrezept für ewiges Leben? Im Film
erzählen spielwütige Rentnerbands, tanzbegeisterte betagte Damen und die mit 127 Jahren

MAfIA PARADISE: CuBA BEfORE thE REVOLutION Of 1959 - Before the revolution, Cuba was
known as a country of mafiosi. In no other place of the world was the Italian-American mafia so close
to realising the dream of an independent state. Drug deals, prostitution and gambling determined
the economy, politics and tourism of the island nation. The documentary portrays this special part of

market. Thus a trip through Havana resembles a visit to a museum of antique cars.

MANDELA - 6 DECADES
„Wie geht es dir junger Mann? Bist du noch nicht in Rente?“ dieses Geplänkel gab es jedes
Mal mit Madiba, wenn wir uns trafen. Als ich mich zum Mittagessen mit meiner Frau und
Mandela traf, fragte er mich immer, warum ich einen alten Mann besuche, wenn ich doch sicher
Wichtigeres zu tun habe. Diese Bescheidenheit und Zurückhaltung gepaart mit einer Prise
Humor und einem unerschütterlichen Moralkodex ist der Mandela-Mix, der die Welt inspiriert,
verzaubert und erobert hat. Madiba ist ein Vorbild für alle – er zeigt auf, wie wichtig es für die
Menschen ist, Menschlichkeit und moralisches Handeln über den Materialismus zu stellen.
Jürgen Schadeberg
Jürgen Schadeberg wurde 1931 in Berlin geboren und schon als Teenager arbeitete er als
Praktikant für eine deutsche Presseagentur in Hamburg. 1950 wanderte er nach Südafrika aus
und wurde Cheffotograf, Bildredakteur und leitender Grafiker beim Magazin “Drum“. Während
dieser Zeit fotografierte er wichtige Ereignisse im Leben der Südafrikaner in den 50ern. Diese
Bilder zeigen das Leben und den Kampf der Südafrikaner während der Apartheid und beinhalten wichtige Persönlichkeiten aus der Geschichte Südafrikas wie Nelson Mandela, Oliver
Tambo, Walter Sisulu, etc. Jürgen Schadeberg, der auch der „Vater der südafrikanischen
Fotografie“ genannt wird, ist eine wichtige Figur der Fotografie Südafrikas und der ganzen
Welt. Der größte Teil seiner Arbeit, die 70 Jahre und eine Sammlung von ca. 200.000 Negativen
beinhaltet, umfasst eine Fülle an zeitlosen, ikonenhaften Bildern. 2008 präsentierte das Africa
Festival mit großem Erfolg seine Ausstellung „Black and white fifties in South Africa“.

“How are you young man? Aren’t you retired yet?” this is the regular banter I had from Madiba whenever we met. When I went to visit Nelson Mandela for lunch with my wife Claudia he asked me why I
wanted to visit an old man when I probably had other more important things to do. This modesty and
self-effacement mixed with large doses of humour and an unwavering moral code is the Mandela mix
which inspires, charms and captivates the world. Madiba is a role model for all - highlighting the great
need for mankind to choose humanity and morality over materialism. Jürgen Schadeberg
Jürgen Schadeberg was born in Berlin in 1931 and, while still in his teens, worked as an apprentice
photographer for a German press agency in Hamburg. In 1950, he emigrated to South Africa and
became Chief Photographer, Picture Editor and Art Director of Drum Magazine. It was during this
time that Jurgen photographed pivotal moments in the lives of South Africans in the fifties. These
photographs represent the life and struggle of South Africans during Apartheid and include important
figures in South Africa’s history such as Nelson Mandela, Oliver Tambo and Walter Sisulu and many
others. Jürgen Schadeberg, sometimes known as “The Father of South African Photography”, is a

principle figure in South African and World Photography. His major body of work, which spans 70
years and incorporates a collection of some 200,000 negatives, captures a wealth of timeless and
iconic images. In 2008, the Africa Festival presented with great success his exhibition “Black and
white fifties in South Africa”.

NELSON MANDELA’S LEGACY
Nelson Mandela hatte bereits mehr als 10 Jahre seiner lebenslangen Haftstrafe auf Robben
Island verbüßt, als er heimlich seine Autobiographie „Der lange Weg zur Freiheit“ schrieb. Die
Ausstellung beruht auf seiner Autobiographie, um das Leben und Wirken Nelson Mandelas
und sein hinterlassenes Erbe zu dokumentieren. Begeben Sie sich auf eine Reise von 1918, als
Mandela in Mvezo geboren wurde, bis 2013, als er in Johannesburg starb. Das Leben Mandelas ist untrennbar verbunden mit der Geschichte vom Übergang Südafrikas zur Demokratie, mit
all seinen Irrungen und Wirrungen, Höhen und Tiefen. Das alles ist Teil der Geschichte. Die Ausstellung ist einzigartig, da sie auf Fakten rund um Mandela, die kaum öffentlich bekannt sind,
persönlichen Erfahrungen, Anekdoten und Artefakten aus seinem Leben aufmerksam macht.
Die Fotoausstellung ist eine Kooperation zwischen dem Internationalen Africa Festival und der

Nelson Mandela was in the second decade of his life sentence on Robben Island when he secretly
wrote his autobiography, “Long Walk to Freedom“. The exhibition draws on his autobiography to
document the life and times of Nelson Mandela and the legacy he left behind. Let it take you on a
journey from 1918, when Mandela was born in Mvezo, to 2013 when he passed away in Johannesburg. The life of Nelson Mandela is inextricably linked to the history of South Africa’s transition into
democracy with all its trials and tribulations, ebbs and flows. It is all part of the story. This exhibition
is unique, drawing attention to facts about Mandela, little known to the public, personal accounts,
anecdotes and artefacts from his life. The photoexhibition is a cooperation between the International
Africa Festival and the Nelson Mandela Foundation, Johannesburg, South Africa. We are grateful for
this exhibition which was given to us - free of charge.

CHILDREN’S PROGRAMME
Das Kinderprogramm ist ein fester Bestandteil des Africa Festivals. Auch in diesem Jahr wird es
wieder in einem Zirkuszelt stattfinden, damit unsere jüngsten Besucher ihren eigenen Bereich
haben und bei eventuellem Regen, geschützt sind. Der Autor und Musiker Ibrahima Ndiaye
aus dem Senegal wird durch das Programm führen. Er versteht es einzigartig,
sein junges Publikum mit einer Mischung
aus traditioneller Erzählkunst, Pantomime,
Perkussion, Tanz und Gesang zu begeistern. Das afrikanische Künstlerensemble Adesa aus Ghana bringt die Kinder
zum Staunen. In diesem Jahr werden sie
von Freitag bis Sonntag eine afrikanische
Clown- und Akrobatikshow im Multi-Zelt
sowie eine Straßenparade anbieten.
Auch außerhalb des Kinderzeltes ist für
Raum und Beschäftigung für Kinder jeden
Alters gesorgt: „Karibuni Watoto - Willkommen Kinder!” - so heißt der abgeschlossene Kinderbereich, in dem es ein reichhaltiges Spieleangebot geben wird, fernab
vom Festival-Rummel. Wir freuen uns, dass
s.Oliver in diesem Jahr die Organisation
des Kinderbereiches unterstützt. In einer
neuen „Family-Area“ wird es eine Stillecke,
Wickel- und Relaxmöglichkeiten für Familien geben. Der Kinderbereich ist täglich
von 12:00 - 18:00 Uhr geöffnet und für
Besucher des Festivals kostenlos.

feature of the Africa Festival. This year it will
again take place in a circus tent, so that our
youngest visitors have their own little area and
are protected if it rains. The Senegalese author
and musician, Ibrahima Ndiaye, will lead the
programme. He knows how to entertain his
young audience with his own unique mix of
traditional storytelling, pantomimes, percussion, dancing and singing. The African artistic
ensemble, Adesa, from Ghana, will leave the
children amazed. This year, they’ll feature an

African clown and an acrobatics show in the multi-tent and a street parade from Friday to Sunday. Children of all ages will also be provided with space and entertainment outside of the children’s tent: “Karibuni Watoto – Welcome, Children!” will be the name of the closed-off children’s area, where there will be
a huge amount of games on offer, away from the hustle and bustle of the main festival. We’re pleased
that s.Oliver is helping us with the organisation of the children’s area this year. There will be a breastfeeding area, nappy-changing facilities and relaxation possibilities in the “Family Area”. The children’s
area is open daily from 12:00 p.m. - 6:00 p.m., and entrance is free of charge for visitors of the festival.

Schools against racism
Das internationale Africa Festival unterstützt in Zeiten wachsender Intoleranz und Ausländerfeindlichkeit, Schulen die sich gegen Rassismus engagieren. Das Team des Afro Project e.V.
hat Schulen in und um Würzburg angefragt, ob sie bei diesem wichtigen Projekt mitmachen
wollen. Alle an den Projekten beteiligten Schülerinnen und Schüler sowie Lehrerinnen und
Lehrer sind zur Anerkennung ihres großen Engagements für zwei Tage auf dem Festival eingeladen. Die Schulen werden ihre Aktion auf einer Infowand am Eingangsbereich des Festivals
und am Samstag, den 28. Mai 2016 nachmittags auf der Offenen Bühne vorstellen. Des Weiteren wird der Sänger Jahcoustix eine Schule besuchen und ein Gratiskonzert für die Schüler/
innen geben, sowie die Diskussionsrunde zu diesem Thema leiten.

The international Africa Festival is supporting schools that are taking an active stand against racism in
times of growing intolerance and xenophobia. The Afro Project Registered Society has asked schools
in and around Würzburg if they would like to participate in this important project. The dedication of
all those students and teachers who are taking part is being recognised with a two-day invitation to
the festival. The schools will present their campaigns on an information board at the entrance to the
festival and on Saturday 28th May 2016 afternoon present them on the open stage. Furthermore,
the singer Jahcoustix will visit a school and hold a free concert for the pupils as well as lead an open
discussion on this topic.

In diesem Jahr wird es wieder eine Bambushalle
geben, in der sich verschiedene Initiativen und
Medien präsentieren werden. Der Ausgangspunkt für die Gründung der Initiative „True
Fabrics“ war die prekäre Lage der afrikanischen Textilindustrie, die überflutet wird durch
asiatische Imitate. Ziel des Unternehmens ist
die Unterstützung der lokalen Textilindustrie
durch die Schaffung neuer Absatzmöglichkeiten in Deutschland und Europa. Die Initiative „Ombili“ aus Namibia präsentiert ihre
Arbeit mit den San-Buschleuten und verkauft
Schnitzereien und Kunsthandwerk dieses
bedrohten Naturvolkes. M.W.A.N.Z.A. e.V.
wird über die 50-jährige Städtepartnerschaft
von Würzburg mit Mwanza informieren. Des
Weiteren werden das afrikanische PrintMagazin LoNam und die taz, die das Festival
präsentieren, mit einem Infostand vertreten
sein. Die Informationsstände der Bambushalle
sind täglich von 10:00 bis 18:00 Uhr geöffnet.

There will be a bamboo hall again this year, where
various initiatives and media will be presented. The
basis for the foundation of the “True Fabrics” initiative was the fragile situation of the African textiles
industry, which is being overpowered by Asian
replicas. The foundation’s aim is to support the
local textiles industry by creating new marketing
opportunities in Germany and Europe. The Namibian initiative Ombili will be presenting its work with
the San Bushmen and selling wood carvings and
handcrafts made by this endangered indigenous
people. M.W.A.N.Z.A. e.V. will be providing information on the 50-year city twinning between Würzburg and Mwanza. Furthermore, the African print
magazine LoNam and the German daily newspaper taz, both of whom are hosting the festival,
will have their own info-stand. The information
booths in the bamboo hall are open daily from
10:00 a.m. until 6:00 p.m.

Das internationale Mode- und Lifestyleunternehmen s.Oliver wird auch in diesem Jahr das
28. Africa Festival in Würzburg finanziell unterstützen. In Kooperation mit der „Stiftung Africa
Festival Würzburg“ wird es eine Charity Aktion geben, deren Erlös der Stiftung zu Gute kommt.
An einem gemeinsamen Stand können sich die Besucher über die gemeinnützige Arbeit
informieren und an der Foto-Aktion teilnehmen. Die Stiftung wurde im Oktober 2014 in Eigenverwaltung des Afro Project e.V. gegründet. Mit Ihrer Arbeit fördert sie soziale, kulturelle und
karitative Projekte in Afrika.
Once again this year, s.Oliver, the international fashion and lifestyle company, will sponsor the 28th
Africa Festival. There will be a charity campaign in cooperation with the Africa Festival Würzburg
Foundation, the proceeds of which will go to the foundation. The visitors can gather information about
non-profit work and participate in the photo-campaign at a specially
designed booth. The foundation was founded by Afro Project e.V.
in October 2014 and is managed by the association. It supports
social, cultural and charitable projects in Africa.

Médecins Sans Frontières wurde 1971 von einer Gruppe französischer Ärzte als eine private,
regierungsunabhängige humanitäre Organisation gegründet. Sie machten sich zur Aufgabe,
in Krisen- oder Konfliktgebieten unabhängig von religiösen, ethnischen oder politischen
Interessen medizinische Nothilfe zu leisten. Ärzte ohne Grenzen ist unabhängig, neutral und
unparteiisch und arbeitet frei von bürokratischen Zwängen. Um diese Unabhängigkeit zu
bewahren, finanziert sich Ärzte ohne Grenzen überwiegend aus privaten Spenden. Für ihre
Arbeit wurde die Organisation 1999 mit dem Friedensnobelpreis ausgezeichnet. Ärzte ohne
Grenzen leistet weltweit in mehr als 60 Ländern medizinische Nothilfe. Die meisten der Hilfsprojekte sind derzeit in Afrika.

MADE IN AFRICA
Die Modeschöpferin Rama Diaw aus Saint Louis
(Senegal) entwirft seit einigen Jahren moderne afrikanische Mode und Accessoires und verwendet hierbei einheimische Techniken und Materialen wie Batik
und Indigostoffe. Alle Materialen, die sie verwendet,
werden im Senegal, Mauretanien und Mali eingekauft.
Aus ihrer Leidenschaft für Mode ist die Vereinigung
„Aissaitou“ entstanden, die benachteiligte Schneiderinnen, Näherinnen und Stofffärberinnen auf dem
Land in einem Atelier zusammenbringt und so das
ganze Jahr über für Arbeit und eine Bleibe sorgt. Des
Weiteren erlaubt ihr der Verkauf ihrer Erzeugnisse
in Europa, ein Dorf namens Pellour in der Nähe von
Saint Louis im Senegal mit Schulmöbeln und Medikamenten zu unterstützen.
Zur Unterstützung dieses Projektes stellt Afro Project wieder ein kostenloses Zelt zur Verfügung und
organisiert eine Modenschau mit den Kreationen von
Madame Rama. Die Modenschau vor dem Zelt von
Madame Rama findet Freitag, Samstag und Sonntag
um 15:00 + 17:00 Uhr neben dem Havana Club statt.

The fashion designer Rama Diaw from Saint Louis
(Senegal) has been creating modern African fashion
and accessories for a few years now and uses native
techniques and materials like batik and indigo cloths. All
materials she uses are directly from Senegal, Mauretania
and Mali. Because of her passion for fashion she created
the federation “Aissaitou”, which brings together professional craftswomen. The dressmakers, sewers and cloth
dyers from the countryside work together in one studio
and thus are provided with work and a space to stay for
the entire year. Furthermore, the sale of her products in
Europe equips a village, called Pellour near Saint Louis in
Senegal with school furniture and medication.
In order to support this project, Afro Project provides
again a tent free of charge and organises a fashion show
with the creations of Madame Rama. The fashion show
will take place Friday, Saturday and Sunday at 3:00 +
5:00 p.m. next to the Havana Club.

Die Highlights auf einen

“Much Has Changed, Much Has Not“. With these words the African-American civil rights organisation
NAACP described the situation of the black population of the United States in the mid-20th century.
Today, 150 years after the abolition of slavery, and more than 50 years after Martin Luther King’s
famous speech „I Have A Dream“, still a lot has to change in the USA – in spite of Barack Obama’s
highly symbolic election for president. Racist hate crimes like those committed during service at the
Emanuel A.M.E. Church in Charleston, regularly recurring reports on police brutality against black
Americans, and, last but not least, the manifold structural disadvantages the majority of African-Ame
ricans are confronted with in everyday-life are abundant proof of it.
After previous exhibitions on the African diaspora in the Caribbean, Brazil, and Spanish America, this
year’s subject of the University tent is the history and the present situation of the African-descended
population in the Unites States. The tent is open daily from 10:00 a.m. - 8:00 p.m.

Aus Sicherheitsgründen können Kinder erst ab 12
Jahren in Begleitung eines Erziehungsberechtigten
und mit Eintrittskarte die Abendkonzerte besuchen.
Wir weisen darauf hin, dass wir durch das kostenlose
Kinder- und Rahmenprogramm tagsüber den Kindern
tolle Möglichkeiten bieten, das Festival zu genießen.
Eltern haben ihre Kinder selbstverantwortlich zu beaufsichtigen.
Um das reichhaltige Rahmenprogramm zu finanzieren und die günstigen Eintrittspreise weiter halten zu
können, sind wir auf den Getränkeumsatz angewiesen.
Deshalb ist es nicht erlaubt, Getränke auf den Platz
mitzubringen - ausgenommen sind Trinkflaschen für
Kleinkinder. Bitte entsorgen Sie Ihre Getränkeflaschen
vor Betreten des Festivalgeländes, da die Security
angewiesen ist, Taschen und Rucksäcke zu durchsuchen. Auf dem Festivalgelände gibt es eine Trinkwasserstelle, die auch als solche gekennzeichnet ist.
Werbung jeder Art, besonders mit Flugblättern und Plakaten, ist auf dem gesamten Festivalgelände verboten, damit das Festivalgelände sauber aussieht und wir die Kosten für die
Müllentsorgung in Grenzen halten können. Auch möchten wir Sie bitten, Müll jeglicher Art in die
aufgestellten Müllbehälter zu entsorgen.
Und noch eine Bitte: Seien Sie fair gegenüber den Security-Leuten an den Toren, die dort
ihren (nicht immer leichten) Job machen. Wie Sie wissen, haben wir internationale Stars zum
Festival eingeladen, die einen hohen Sicherheitsstandard von uns verlangen. Deshalb sind wir
verpflichtet, am Eingang zum Zirkuszelt Taschen etc. nach Waffen zu durchsuchen. Je weniger
Sie am Abend mitbringen, desto schneller können Sie eingelassen werden. Des Weiteren sind
Film-, Foto- und Tonbandaufnahmen für Besucher im Zirkuszelt nicht erlaubt.

Auch in diesem Jahr gilt: Hunde müssen draußen
bleiben. Diese Regelung, die sich gerade viele Eltern
kleiner Kinder gewünscht haben, hat sich bewährt und
bleibt daher bestehen.

Nachdem wir von der Stadt Würzburg die Genehmigung bekommen haben, den Havana Club
bis 2:00 Uhr nachts zu öffnen, bitten wir alle Besucher sich auf dem Heimweg ruhig zu verhalten.
Damit sich unsere Gäste wohlfühlen, behalten wir uns das Recht vor, stark alkoholisierten und
aggressiven Besuchern den Zugang zum Festivalgelände zu verwehren. Das Festival war immer ein friedliches Festival und soll
es auch bleiben. Die Fahrer des Taxistandes am Haupteingang
werden Sie sicher nach Hause bringen.

for the peaceful run of the festival.
As we have to finance all the supporting
acts of the festival and still want to keep
the entrance fee low, we depend on the
drinks turnover. For this reason, it is not
allowed to bring own beverages to the festival except for children’s drinking bottles.
Please dispose of your beverage bottles
before entering the festival site. The security is told to search bags and backpacks.

at the festival site. Please help us to keep

The smoking ban applies to all tents on the festival ground. Please use the outdoor ashtrays!
Due to security reasons, access to the circus tent can only be allowed to children from the age of
12 years on, accompanied by a parent or legal guardian and with an entrance ticket. We kindly point
out to our daily free of charge children’s programme and the large supporting programme, which
offers each child great opportunities to enjoy the festival throughout the day. Parents are personally
responsible for supervising their children.

We also ask for your fairness towards
the security staff at the entrances. They are
doing a job which is not always easy. We
have invited many international stars to the
festival and they require high standards of
security. We are therefore obliged to search
bags etc. for weapons at the entrance to
the circus tent. The less items you bring,
the quicker you will be given admittance.
Please note that recordings of any kind or
taking pictures is not allowed in the circus
tent at any time.
The city of Würzburg has given permission to extend the opening hours of our Havana Club to 2:00
a.m. in the morning. We kindly ask all our guests to leave quietly afterwards. In order to make sure that
everybody has a good time at the festival and feels safe, we reserve the right to deny drunken and
obnoxious guests admittance to the festival ground. The festival has always been known for being a
peaceful festival and we would like to keep it as such. There will be a cab stand at the main entrance of
the festival. Please do not drink and drive.
