Bowl was a huge
success. First,
I need to thank
the football
committee,
Chuck Klabo,
Dave Larson,
Jerry Gilbraith,
Matt Sturlaugson,
Mike McCall,
Rich Ellsworth,
Shane Heiberg and Tom Staiger, for their
hard work and support throughout this whole
season. There are several nobles and ladies
that helped make this game possible. Our
committee cannot thank you enough for
helping out.
A Proud Profile At Imperial Session
The 2014 Imperial
Session in Minneapolis
was historic for El
Zagal and North
Dakota. Imperial Sir
Dale Stauss (Kem
Temple) was elected
Imperial Potentate and
the Escort Motor Patrol
won the overall trophy
in the International Association of Shrine Motor
Patrols competitions.
Additionally, El Zagal Temple was recognized as
a Gold Temple for the second consecutive year
at the Membership Hall of Fame Luncheon. I
am also pleased to note that the number of Gold
Temples increased over previous years. With
your help, we can make it a third year by keeping
up your efforts at bringing in new members and
getting some of our old friends reactivated.
The business meetings were more harmonious
than past years, but there was a jurisdictional
fight over the country of Latvia and the proposed
Imperial per capita dues increase was defeated
by the representatives. While I was not too
concerned over the Latvia issue, I was somewhat
disappointed that the Iowa Corporation
Representatives voted down a dues increase but
approved an Imperial budget that projects a
nearly million dollar deficit. Not a good way to
run a business in my opinion.
A good example of how to run a good business
was demonstrated by the North Dakota Shrine
Bowl committee. The football camp in Mayville
and the game at the Fargodome received high
marks from coaches, players, and the press. What
a great opportunity to tell our story and to raise
money for the world’s greatest philanthropy. My
compliments to Scott and all of the El Zagal and
Kem Football Committee members.
We were honored to have Imperial Sirs Dale
and Jim attend the luncheon and game. Parents,
players, and Nobles were given a firsthand report
from the top executive of the Shriner’s Hospitals
for Children. The Shriner’s patients in attendance
moved the crowd with their testimonials of how
the Shriners changed their lives and inspired the
participants to donate to our cause.
Coming up next is the Midwest Shrine
Association in Sioux Falls, August 20 – 23. I am
hoping many of our Nobles and Ladies will take
the trip to support our Temple. I look forward
to seeing you there! There are a number of other
activities coming up, so check the Camel Tales
and our website for details.
I appreciate the privilege of being your Potentate
and have been truly inspired by all of the good
work of our Nobles and ladies. What a great time
to be a Shriner!

Hospital Auxilary
Hopefully everyone is enjoying a good
summer. It will soon be fall and we will again
gather together to continue our efforts for the
love of a child.
The September meeting is scheduled for
Saturday, September 13th at 10a.m. at the
shrine. We will be preparing our envelopes
with tickets for our annual fashion show.
We hope you had a chance to see the July issue
of the Camel Tales. There is a list of items the
Auxilians provided in the year 2013; fantastic
job ladies.
As the old saying goes “many hands make light
work” Keep this in mind, when you are called
to help with the fashion show, please say yes.
Remember to bring a toy, game, or food gift
certificate to the meeting.
In closing please remember one of our dear
Auxilians, Phyllis Gifford, who has gone to
her eternal rest.

Well, we don’t have much to write about. Our
last meeting was at Camp Grassick. We got
our picture in the Steele paper and we looked
real good.
Next month we all ride off to the Snyder home
for the Big Party. This is where we all talk
smart and drink lots of fire water.
If you would like to be a Mandan Indian, see
any of us or our Chief Ross.
One last thing, if you are in town “c’mon down”
to the Amvets on Friday at noon for lunch. It

Parading and Planning
the Fall Ceremonial
Nobles, does absence really make the heart
grow fonder? I have not entered a sample of my
writing skills for to long.
The Flag Corps has been busier than a one
legged man in an, well you all know what I
mean.
We started our parade season on Memorial Day
in Valley City. Next we paraded at Rally in The
Valley in Valley City. Then it was off to Felton
Field Days Parade, which was enjoyed by all
of us that attended. Next came the Fourth of
July with our normal appearances at Sanborn
and McLeod celebrations. Then we loaded up
and took off for Imperial in Minneapolis where
we got to parade under the lights of Hennepin
Avenue. And this last weekend we had the
honor of presenting the colors for the East –
West Shrine Football game at Fargo.
Then what time we have left, we have spent
planning for a ceremonial that no one will ever
forget. Most of the plans have been made, with
some final details to be ironed out by October I
am sure we will be ready.
Most of the events will be at the Valley City
Eagles Club. This facility is one of the nicest
Eagles Clubs in the tri state area and has lots of
room for the events being planned.
Just a short list: Friday, October 3, will be a golf
Scramble for the men and wine tasting for the
women. In the evening the Eagles will have a
buffet and we will have the pleasure of listening
to El Riads Last Call Rock Band out of Sioux
Falls, SD.
On Saturday, October 4, will be the normal
ceremonial schedule with physicals, fez fitting,
parade, Moslem Feast, 1st and 2nd Sections.
The evening will include a banquet and music
by pianist Lexus Haut from Jamestown who
has been a patient at Shriners Hospital. All this
followed again by the music of Last Call Rock
Band for our dancing pleasures.
Then on Sunday morning, there will be a Free
Will Offering Pancake and Sausage Breakfast
at the Masonic Lodge. Our Lodge has been
known to have the best darn pancakes in, dare I
say Eastern North Dakota.
Watch for the registration to be coming out
soon in Camel tales and on the El Zagal
Website. Sign up a new member or two and
bring them to Valley City for the 125th Annual
Fall

Well I got to drive in my first parade at the
Imperial in Minneapolis, MN. What a fun
event! I got to meet lots of Nobles from all over.
I gotta tell you about this parade. I was driving
the Patrol Paddy Wagon; it’s the one which
carries the Shrine flag, and Old Glory, it is also
the one used as a tow truck in the event one of
the cars breaks down. My job is to maintain
spacing so the Jumper car operators can do their
maneuvers safely, and then when an intersection
is approaching, I am to engage at full throttle
toward the center of the intersection, and hit
my brakes at full force squealing to a halt so the
operators can drive circles around me. If I can’t
hit my mark, I can theoretically throw off the
whole parade.
Well, shortly after the first intersection my
brakes went out. That made it very hard to
hit my marks, the guys were wondering why I
wasn’t screeching to a halt like we had practiced
over and over again. “What was wrong with
Joel? Has he cracked under the pressure?”
Nope it was just my brakes, but we managed
to overcome and adapt to the situation at hand.
Finally the parade had come to an end, the
final intersection had come. There was a
police officer there. He waved us to the right
instead of left, we then drove toward

lot. Somewhere in my mind I knew we were
supposed to go left at the end of the parade.

In hindsight, that’s where most everyone else was
indeed going except for the Jamestown Clowns.
In hindsight, and realizing now as I write this,

Anyway, eventually we left the parking lot in
line #1 through #5 Jumper (Ray, Troy, Todd,
Rod, and Russell), Paddy wagon (Joel), and
the Big Model A Jumper With Rick Oberg at
the wheel with Virgil Fromke riding shotgun,
and two Nobles in the back (Lyle, and Garry I
think). It was dark, none of us had any lights,
and we were driving in downtown Minneapolis
MN at 10 O’clock at night in traffic doing
wheelies, doing what we were trained to do,

and no clue how to get back to the Dunwoody
parking lot.
We were getting some looks let me tell ya. At
one of the stop lights I looked at the car next
to me; they rolled the window down so I could
ask an important question “Pardon Me; Would
you have any Grey Poupon?” I mean what else
could I say?
A couple lights later I was getting heckled
by some guys in a Jeep SUV, I was like, “you
wanna race!?” They were like; “in that? Yah!”
Well my guys “Rough and tough Russell”,
and “Lightening Rod Gartner” were there to
support me. Light turns Green, and both my
Buds took off in most impressive Wheelies
across the intersection. That drew lots of horn
honks and cheers. We felt pretty cool, and were
having way too much fun. One of the neatest
things I got to do on the way back was high
five some kids as we drove past, I missed a little
boys hand who must have been 5 or 6. Since
my brakes were out, he chased me to the end of
the block just so I could slap his hand. Made
both of our days.
The next day around lunch time, Rick took
some of the Patrollers on a tour of why we are
in the business of what the Shrine Temples are
all about. We went to the Shriners Hospital
of Minneapolis. There we got to see firsthand
where the efforts of our fund raisers pay off.
They are doing some awesome work down there
at the new Shriners Hospital for Kids. What
I saw was a nice quiet Hospital nestled in the
woods on the banks of the mighty Mississippi
River. The kids and staff have nice facilities
with walking paths in the woods, rooms for
the parents and fairy gardens where the fairies
actually leave notes for the kids. It’s a magical
place where the Doctors, Nurses and Staff of
the Shriners Hospital for Kids help make kids
pain go away.

EMP- Imperial Multi-Wheel Champions!! - And First-Place Place Overall As Well
As winter faded on the northern Tundra
in early 2014, The Escort Motor Patrol
formulated its plans targeting everything –all
the practices, Driving team, who’s attending,
just everything--to both winning the
driving/inspection aspect and capturing the
OVERALL Trophy also to be awarded.
Led by Driving Captain Noble Tim Amble,
the entire Driving Team---Nobles Matt
Albert, Dan Beach, Dale Jenson, Jim Hammer,
Pat Jones, Bruce Nearson, Jim Rasmussen,
Stan Schroeder, and Scotty Uhrich-- all
performed perfectly to capture both of these
major trophies for El Zagal. Adding icing on
that cake, additionally Noble Stan Schroeder
executed superb driving skills and captured
the 4-wheel obstacle course competition with
the fastest time through the course.
Putting it all together shows what an active
and dedicated group of Nobles can achieve
when enthusiasm, and dedication along with
the skills to put it all together and do just that!
Yogi Berra once said it so well in a renowned
quote—“It ain’t braggin’ when you’ve done
it.” And that’s what El Zagal’s EMP did,
capturing every initial objective, It surely
looks like El Zagal Shrine is going to need
another trophy case, courtesy of the Escort
Motor Patrol. And now, as the sun drops
slowly in the west, the EMP will move on to
the Midwest competition where the reigning
Imperial Champions will show ‘em how it’s
done!!!
And there’s more—at the Awards Breakfast
over 40 EMP Nobles and their Ladies
attended along with others from El Zagal
who attended, receiving immediately the
great news of the El Zagal EMP’s victories.
That demonstrates great support for El
Zagal’s premier unit. Support throughout also
included the EMP’s ‘Pit Crew,’ the Ladies
of the unit members. They’ve always had a
tradition to help out in the car detailing prior
to the competition as well as cheering the unit
on during the actual competition. THANK
YOU, LADIES, YOU DONE GOOD!!!!
And a personal aside, The EMP dedicated
its great wins to unit member Noble Gurnee
Bridgman who had planned to attend Imperial
but couldn’t attend due to his current medical
situation. It required daily treatments at
Sanford Medical’s Roger Maris Cancer Center,
preventing him for attending what would
have been his fifth Imperial competition. Your
scribe is obviously humbled by this dedication
and gives his salaams and thanks to the

The week started with 127 players and 16 coaches
arriving at Mayville State for check-in. Several
practices a day and hard work throughout the
week brought the players together as a team.
On Friday, our 2nd annual mini-camp and
screening clinic was held. We had 3 kids attend
and all were accepted into our hospital system.
We had a few current patients attend our minicamp. Our players saw first-hand, what our
patients are about. They interacted and played
games with the patients. Priceless smiles were
abundant on our patient’s and player’s faces.
On Sunday, our awards banquet was held at the
Holiday Inn in Fargo. Our guest speaker, Mike
Berg, gave a speech that everyone should hear.
He’s been doing this for so many years and his
message never gets old.
Our special guest, Emily Mellish, was a hit. The
family drove from Erie, PA to attend our game.
Emily was our special guest 2 years ago and they
asked if they could come back. At age 8, Emily
has been a Shrine patient for most of her life. She
has been through 19 surgeries and has more to
come. She is an inspiration and caring little girl.
Two years ago she started selling beaded bracelets
and gives the money back to Shriners hospitals.
Her slogan is “beads4needs”. So far, she has raised
over $28,000.
At our game this year, she raised $3,800. Also,
we auctioned several items including a 4-pack of
Emily’s bracelets that went for $575. Thanks to
Emily and her family for visiting us again!
By the way, we did have a couple of games. The
11-Man west won 21-2 and the 9-Man west won
48-14. Overall, the young men who played the
game learned what the Shrine Bowl is all about.
A crowd of nearly 2200 fans attended the game
and were “screened” by the Jamestown Clowns.
Any TSA agent would have been envious of the
new screening equipment. They did a stellar job!
Thanks again to all Nobles and Ladies for making
the 2014 ND Shrine Bowl a great success. Plans
have already started for the 2015 ND Shrine
Bowl. Please plan to attend next year’s game on
Saturday, July 18th at the Alerus Center in Grand
Forks.

A Walk About Town
After taking the month of July off, it’s time
to take advantage of our beautiful summer
evenings and give the Cork and Canvas Walk
another go-round.
Let’s meet at the Shrine at 5:30 on August 14
and continue on to see if we can visit some of
the many places we haven’t been to yet.
Congratulations to the EMP’s on a winning
competition at Imperial. Way to go guys!!!

Night Life In The Big City
It has been a busy parade season. So far, we
( the favorite of all parade viewers) have
attended 4 parades and by the time this is
being read we will have been in 7. Sounds like
a lot for the average unit, but as you have read
here before, we are not an average unit. We are
an AMAZING unit. There are people that
go to parades just to see us. We only have one
problem, we have one member who has been
flirting with the law, from here to Minneapolis.
We can only hope that when judgment day
arrives, he doesn’t bring the wrath of justice to
our unit. You know who you are Buckwheat.
The 7th annual Motorcycle Run was a day of
great fun and enlightenment; many attended, I
believe 107.
Some understand why we are fundraising
machines, some don’t. But when they leave
our event, they all know why we do what we
do,,,and appreciate the fact that we involve our
communities. They all contribute generously.
We need to always be aware of that fact, and
we must remember to thank each and every
community for their undying support.
The Sanborn parade was a great success, and
Bob (Bubba) did another outstanding job of
being host. His food is always tip-top. The
New Rockford parade was a thrill, and maybe
can be enjoyed again.
The White Cloud Parade was another home
town event that we all greatly enjoy to be part
of and the residents of Jamestown enjoy us
as well. We thank them for letting us be the
clowns we are.
The North Dakota Shrine Bowl Football game
was held in Fargo, at the Fargo Dome on
Sunday, July 13. It was a well attended event. I
don’t think the reason for the great ticket sales
had anything to do with the clowns selling, but
that IS what happened.
I am sure the security provided by the CSA
( clown security administration ), was the
most advanced security the dome or any ticket
holder has ever encountered. I would also like
to thank the Fargo Units for their hospitality, it
was most appreciated . Thank You guys.
Our Annual Clown Baseball Game will have
been played by now, July 16th was the date. I
put my money on the Clowns winning, WE
are superior athletes, it goes with being a
clown. Enough said.
We had a wonderful time at the Imperial; it
was a busy few days. Everybody had a great
event. Fluff, once again, was a superstar. He
drove the semi down and back, and kept us in
line. Okay, maybe not in line, but his efforts do
not go unnoticed. THANK YOU FLUFF.
Being in a parade of that magnitude was like
catching a 30 inch Walleye. Fifteen clowns
in the parade, we were once again the envy
of all . We learned so much about downtown
Minneapolis, the one way streets, , how to be
on one , then turn around and go the wrong
way on the same one. All with no lights at ten
P.M., driving around in the dark, with a small
plane, baby buggy, two race cars, and an old fire
truck with 5 clowns hanging on, all driven by
clowns and wondering if we were going to find
the parking lot before anything ran out of gas,
or a battery went dead to extinguish our spark.
But what seemed like six hours went by pretty
quickly, and there it was, that dark non lit
parking lot that a rickshaw driver finally found
for us was in plain sight. Thank You rickshaw
man.
We would like to thank the Divan for their
hospitality...after they managed to acquire
a space for it....it was superb.....Also the
great informational meetings at the hotel in
the mornings. The great camaraderie that
was displayed was once again enjoyed by all.

Greetings Nobles and Ladies, the Oriental
Band is getting ready for the MSA in Sioux
Falls, SD.
It appears all the competition events will be
held at the fair grounds so those attending
will be able to see all the units perform.
The Oriental Band is planning on attending
the Looney Day Parade in Vergas, MN on
Sunday, August 17. Lineup is at 1 PM, step
off at 2 PM. After the parade, an oasis at
Steve and Diane Hanson’s on Leefe Lake
for Looney treats. Call me for directions if
you need them.
The band meets the 1st and 3rd Mondays of
each month at 7 PM at El El Zagal Temple.

Color Guard Croonings
By Golly, here we are in the middle of parade
season, and what a season it is for the Color
Guard! We added a couple new towns this
year, and we have really enjoyed tripping and
falling up the streets in front of a whole new
group of people. A big hand to those who
come out and march and give us a good name
(yeah, right!)
While this reporter was not able to make
the Imperial Sessions in Minneapolis, I
understand the Color Guard had a great
time. What an honor to carry the Colors in a
parade such as this. Word has it though that
the Clowns were picking on the Color Guard
a bit. I was told they were lookin for this
guy named “Lars”……something about him
throwing stones at the Clowns. Like I have
said before, this Lars guy is one of the nicest,
most kind and gentle guys I know. Don’t see
what the problem is here. I was also told by the
Minneapolis Police Department that you can
always tell when the Clowns are in town. The
noise level goes up, and your wallets disappear.
I guess the Color Guard sure had fun getting
to know your wives tho……..
I have it from a good source that the meetings
went well at Imperial. Illustrious Sir Myron
will be able to give a complete detailed report
on the meetings. I understand that there is
actually video and static pictorial evidence of
Myron paying close attention, and hanging on
every word of the speakers. Way to go bud! So
proud of you!
I don’t know if you have noticed yet or not,
but the Color Guard bought a new vehicle to
transport the best damn unit in all of El Zagal
land. We call it the “Color Guard Cruizer”. It
has worked out well for us, and I want to say a
special THANK YOU to all the Nobles who
stood up and offered gifts of cash to help pay
for the lettering of the bus. That is what being
a volunteer is. The way I have it figured, after

the usual Presidents stipend for administrative
duties, we have a total of $43.72 to use on the
lettering. Just enough to buy colored magic
markers and a few balloons. Actually, we raised
a fair amount, and I want to say Thanks to all
the guys for helping out.
The Color Guard Cruizer wouldn’t be what it
is if it wasn’t for our crack driving team. While
sometimes it APPEARS they are on crack,
such is not the case. The driving team consists
of Mafia (Dave Bjorgo) and Bruce Stone
(Stoner). So that means, we have a Stoner
from the Mafia driving us around. Stay off the
streets!!! Also doing fill in when these two are
in jail is the one and only Elvis impersonator,
Warren Rethwitch. Quite the moves these
guys have.

to
driving,
a
huge
CONGRATULATIONS goes out to the boys
in the Miata’s. Taking home an international
award is something to be proud of. We in the
Color Guard are so proud to be a huge part
of your success as we have taught you all you
know. In a way, I should say – Thank US!! Just
teasing guys, great job!
Well, I see my paper is running out of room, so
I will leave you with our best wishes for a fun
and safe summer season. When you are at the
lakes, come see us. Our meeting nites are the
3rd Monday of the month, with social at 5:30,
dinner by 6:30 and meeting at 7. Clothing
optional.
It is a great time to be a Shriner, but remember,
there is nothing finer than a COLOR
GUARD SHRINER!!

The engines are firing up and wheels are burning.
Parade season has fully started for the Mobil
Nobles. We have had a lot of fun so far. We
have driven in three parades. So far this summer
Felton, Park Rapids and Pelican Rapids. We
plan on being in a lot more parades this summer
to when we wrap it up in the fall.
We however didn’t make it to the Imperial
Parades once again, Congrats to the Escort
Motor Patrol with your competition win.
Speaking of competition for the past few years
but more so in the last few months the Mobil
Nobles want to get a competition team going.

Well summer is flying by. We were able to attend
the Imperial Session and compete with our
motorcycles. Needless to say we fell short. We
competed against some very strong competition.
One drill team was from Chicago, one from
Boston and another from Lincoln. Kudos to
them they looked magnificent! We ran a clean
routine and tried our best.
We rode in the parade down Hennepin Ave in
Minneapolis. What a great place to unleash the
Cedar
fury of our Hogs!

The Dust Doesn’t Settle In the West
The last Duster meeting was held today on
July 14thth. Dusters Don Laschkewitsch and
Bob Simmers attended the Imperial Session
in Minneapolis on July 6th. Don gave a brief
report on the Imperial activities and Bob
gave a glowing account of their tour of the
Minneapolis Hospital, Imperial parade, and
the impressive hospital kid’s performance,
which brought tears to most Shriners who
witnessed the show.
President Lewis gave a report on the static
car display that the Dusters gave at the
Baptist Home on June 19th. The 10 Duster
cars generated lots of curiosity for the home
residents and their families. In addition
to the cars, there was live music, hotdogs
and hamburgers, ice cream and lemonade.
Apparently the word has gotten around and
the Dusters will be doing more static displays
at other nursing homes and assisted living
facilities in the near future. Stay posted.
Ed Hasche reported that he will model a
possible new, Duster uniform shirt (designed
by Ralph Lauren?) at the next Duster meeting.
If it meets the approval of the uniform
committee and members, it will be added as
an accessory our Duster parade uniforms.
President Lewis noted several announcements
and upcoming events. On the list are: Duster
Social at Captain Freddies, 5:00PM on July
24th; El Zagal Fishing trip on July 25-28;
Jay Buringrud Shrine picnic August 1st at

Fran Ely announced that Donna Sharkey is
home and doing well after a recent stroke.
Kim announced the recent passing on Robert
Hilton, Duster friend and brother of Duster
Charlie Hilton. A Duster contribution will be
made in his memory to the Shrine Hospital in
