Dear Members,
The FIAT Freak
Ciao Bambini! Summer's in full swing, and
so are the arms of Fiat and Lancia fans everywhere as they twist the steering wheels of their
macchine d'Italia! How sweet the sounds and
sensations!
This issue of Ricambi has a dual role. Not
only is it club Fiat-Lancia Unlimited regularly
published print communication for this time of
year, it also serves as a program and guidebook
for the twenty-first annual Fiat Freak Out. To
those of you gathering at FFO2004, I share a
hearty welcome and invite you to soak up as
much of the fun and friendship as you possibly
can. Like the club itself, you'll get as much out
of the weekend as you care to put in, so don't be
shy. Nowhere on the planet will you find
more enthusiastic and friendly car-crazy people! For those of you who couldn't be with us
this year, I trust this magazine will give you a
sense of the hard work and festive atmosphere
that prevails during a Freak Out weekend.
While this is the 21st "Fiat Freak Out", it's
actually the 22nd event, the first gathering
being held in July of 1983 in the Pocono
Mountains of Pennsylvania. We just didn't
call it "Freak Out" on that first venture. As the
co-founder of this festival, I never dreamed it
would grow from approximately one dozen
participants to the hundreds assembled here in
2004. Back in '83, all of the funds came from
the personal pockets of co-founder Dwight
Varnes and me, and we grabbed a telephone
3
www.flu.org
book to find a place to eat on that Saturday
evening. Now we see hundreds of people at an
event with a budget in the tens-of-thousands
of dollars conducted by dozens of dedicated
volunteers!
Fiat Freak Out has grown not only in numbers,
but also in the quality of the experience…an
experience as rewarding as anyone could imagine. First-time attendees will no doubt observe
the warm friendships that have developed
amongst FFO veterans, and your are reminded
that you, too, are welcomed to be a part of it all.
Whether you have a less-than-perfect car…or
no car at all…the folks at FFO embrace all who
share their love of Fiats, Lancias, and other
Italian automobiles.
Fiat Freak Out is a huge undertaking. It
couldn't happen without the hard work of
many rabidly dedicated volunteers. Just a few
weeks ago, I was involved with a major Italian
car event in the northeastern part of the USA.
At that venue, where the majority of the cars and
the incomes of their owners reached into the six
and seven figure range, I was shocked to see so
little in the way of preparation, organization,
and execution. In fact, one of the principle
organizers distinctly stated that "We pretty
much wing it." In contrast, those administer
Fiat Freak Out do so with months of planning
and years of experience. In the past twentyfive years, I've attended car-club events all over
the USA and in some European countries. To
by Bobb Rayner
date, I have never, ever, seen an auto-enthusiast
event administered better than Fiat Freak Out,
regardless of it's size, budget, or prestige.
Over the years, Freak Out has changed both
its location and its date several times. It should
be noted that the place and time of each year's
Freak Out could perhaps be more accurately
described as being chosen by the availability of
a venue and the willingness of volunteers to do
the work. In other words, we don't choose
the date or the place, the date and the place
chooses us! We have to go where we can find
the two most important resources: a place that
will accommodate the event, and people willing
to do the work to make it happen. To that end,
it appears that as of this writing, at least two
proposals have been submitted to move future
Freak Outs to new and exciting venues. Let's
hope the legacy of fun, excitement, and friendshipcarries on in the years ahead.
Thanks to all of you who have read my
columns during the past 20+ years. To those of
you at Fiat Freak Out 2004, I give you my most
effusive greetings! To those of you who couldn't be with us this year, I send my sincere
thanks for your support of this great organization called FLU, with a reminder that whether
together or apart, we are members of a vibrant,
passionate, and caring Italian car "family."
Mille grazie! Love you, love your show!
Ciao!

MOFLO 2004
by Mike Greer
It’s amazing really, that this was the fifth
annual Midwest Outing of Fiat and Lancia
Owners, aka MOFLO. Back in 2000 a few
guys from Kansas, Iowa, and Missouri
started talking about where they might
meet to visit with other Fiat and Lancia
owners and exchange ideas and information. Well, the middle ground ended up in
Osage Beach, MO a small tourist town on
the Lake of the Ozarks. From the humble
beginning that started out with 4 Fiats just
five years ago, we now have 24 Fiats and
Lancias and threw in a Ferrari just for
extra measure. The crowd has grown
from 7 people in 2000 to well over 40 in
2004. An interesting trivia fact about
MOFLO is that if you count everyone that
ever attended we would have over 100 people who have been to MOFLO over the
past 5 years and there are only 3 attendees
that have made it to all 5 MOFLO’s.
There are a lot of new faces every year.
This was the first MOFLO for about half
the people this year.
Along with the record-breaking crowd
and number of cars this year, we also set a
new weather record. After raining almost
all day Thursday, the weekend started out
great on Friday morning and into the early
afternoon, as more cars began to arrive.
But just as I finished washing my spider,
and as quickly as an Abarth Rally pops up
over a hill, a shower came in and spotted all
the cars that had been washed. Just as
quickly, it blew through so that Friday’s
cookout in the parking lot was not washed
out. The usual fare of all you can eat hamburgers and the fixings were the order of
the day. The large blue barrel of beverages
that amazingly never seems to empty has
become a symbol of MOFLO hospitality.
With the stage set for a great barbeque we
waited for the sound of the next car to roll
in. Everyone was talking cars and popping
hoods most of the evening. We waited up
5
www.flu.org
late to see if Miss Lady Bug would make it
in or if the heavy rains she was running
into had taken their toll. She finally wandered in just about midnight Friday.
We woke up to a beautiful morning on
Saturday, and everyone once again got
their cars cleaned up for the car show.
Another amazing thing about this group,
everyone pitches in and helps with what is
going on or helps someone with their car.
It’s an amazing sight to see four or five people toweling down a car so that we are all
ready to go to the park on time. Twenty
tops went down, one came off, and a couple stayed in place as we made the short
drive through Osage Beach over to the
Lake of the Ozarks State Park just about a
fifteen minute or so drive. Once you turn
into the park the speed limit is 45 mph and
since we have seen park patrol hand out
tickets on a couple of occasions, we hold to
the speed limit as we take the sweeping
turns down the road to the picnic area and
the car show. Had we known what was in
store we might have driven a little faster.
About the time we made the turn off the
main park road the sky looked pretty dark,
so rather than take our usual place in the
park, we went right to the shelter house.
This turned out to be a smart move,
because within about a half an hour after
arriving the rain started. Fortunately by
then we had the grill in the shelter house
roaring and we were able to all stay dry for
lunch.
The lake came into existence over 70
years ago and at the time was the largest
man made lake in existence. The stone
shelter house looks to be of that vintage and
is a remarkable place to stay warm and dry.
There is a built in fire pit type grill and
even a fireplace in the large room behind
the cooking area. It was full of picnic tables
and the 40 or so of us fit in there very comfortably while Mother Nature had her way.
By the time everyone had finished eating
and socializing and just as you could tell
there was a case of cabin fever starting to
flare up, the rain passed and we got the cars
lined up for the photo you see here. Once
again we had the opportunity to wipe
down the cars and make them presentable
for our traditional group photo. We did
find one drawback to a record number of
cars, a record amount of time spent lining
them up for a photo shoot. Because of the
rain we didn’t want to take them up on the
grass and there wasn’t a good place to get
multiple rows of cars. Too many cars is a
problem we’re glad to live with and we did
the best we could to get the cars lined up so
that every car could be seen.
As the weather continued to clear, once
again the tops went down and we prepared
to take our scenic drive. The drive is about
45 miles and takes about an hour if you
continued on page 25

Twin-Cam High Compression
Pistons? Myth and Reality
In our eternal quest to squeak out more
power from our beloved Fiat twin-cam
engines, many have gone to extremes. For
me, that quest began with the upgrade
from the 1979 Spider’s “boat-anchor”
ADHA carburetor to a more powerful
Weber 34 ADF. After 15 years of driving
the same 2L Spider, it felt like a whole new
car with that relatively simple change.
Next came the desire to find more
compression without a complete block
overhaul. This step was achieved with the
popular conversion to a cylinder head from
an earlier 1800 engine. This conversion
definitely scored a few horses and more
than a couple pound/feet of torque according to my seasoned “butt-dyno”.
The next step in my journey led to a pair
of Weber IDF carburetors and a Fiat
factory “waffle” intake manifold. For the
third time in so many years, the old girl felt
like a whole new car. Finally, this past
winter I installed a single Alquati 40/80
intake cam (I kept the stock exhaust cam to
help conserve some lower-end torque).
Once again, it was like a new tiger under
the hood. To quote fellow FLU member
Allen Lofland: “VAROOOM!”
With each and every upgrade performed
on my Spider, I had the same initial
reaction; “Wow! How can it get any
better than this?” Well, like many
who have followed the same road to
performance (or downward spiral from
my wife’s perspective), I found myself at
the point of no return. To take things to
the next level would involve installing a
set of high compression pistons.
The realm of high compression has been
a secret lair of availability problems and
misinformation. With supplies of oversized
7
www.flu.org
cast pistons drying up, it has been difficult
to find any vendor who has them in stock
or even knows what the resulting CR will
be in a given engine. Like Fox Mulder on
the X-Files I set out to find the truth.
The first point that needs addressed up
front is the misnomer of the term
“High Compression” pistons. In a recent
discussion thread at www.mirafiori.com,
Guy Croft, author of Modifying and
Tuning Fiat/Lancia Twin-Cam Engines,
clarified one important fact… “A point I
made years ago in the UK, when vendors
here were selling so-called “HC Pistons”,
notably for the 2L and 1800 models, was
that there was (legally/technically however
you looked at it) no such thing, EVER.
You won’t open a manufacturer’s cast
piston catalog and go ‘Hey look, he makes
HC pistons for the 2 liter’.”
The fact is, when a piston designed for a
given compression ratio in a particular
engine is installed into a different engine,
the resulting compression ratio will also be
different. Vendors have typically referred
to “9.8:1” and “8.9:1” pistons for the
Fiat/Lancia 2 liter and 1800 engines. The
pistons sold have typically been standard
manufactured cast pistons specifically for
a different engine that will result in a
higher net compression when used in
the 2L and 1800 blocks. There is
technically no such thing as a 9.8:1
piston or an 8.9:1 piston. Further complicating the decision process, several
vendors have had different ideas of what
pistons even result in the quoted ratios.
One vendor shipped a set of pistons with
very small 1.6 mm domes of 3.3cc
displacement claiming they were “9.8:1”.
Another vendor is shipping pistons
with huge 8mm tall domes of 12.4cc
displacement and labeling THEM as 9.8:1.
Who’s correct? Simple: none of them!
Setting aside the fact that there is no such
thing as a “9.8:1” piston, the two examples
above range from 8.85:1 for the 1.6mm
domes in a 2L (8.75:1 in an 1800) to an
astronomical 10.75:1 for the 8mm domes in
a 2L (10.91:1 in an 1800). Both of these
pistons are approximately a full point
different from their advertised ratio.
Croft states, “It is really preferable for
the vendor to simply state the origin of the
pistons (eg ‘they come from the 105TC’)
and leave the calculations up to the buyer.
It is unreasonable to expect the seller to
know exactly what will happen on any
given engine.” I would like to add that one
vendor has followed this approach, stating
that the piston in question is designed for
x.x:1 ratio in engine “A”. What ratios you
will achieve in engine “B” or “C” will be
different. To help settle the questions and
give owners a fairly close guideline from
which to decide, I set out to measure
and calculate the resulting ratios for
combinations of 1800 and 2L blocks, 1800
and 2L heads, and five of the more
common pistons available.
Several cylinder heads were measured
with a burette to determine chamber
volumes. There were two 1800 heads, one
from a Lancia Scorpion and one from a
Lancia Beta. Both of these heads had been
milled at least once in their lifetimes. Both
heads’ chambers measured 48.5cc in
volume. Three 2L heads were measured,
one from a carbureted 2L Spider which
had never been shaved (54cc), another
from an ’81 FI Spider that had been shaved
(51.75cc), and finally an FI Lancia Zagato
head, lightly shaved (52.5cc). These
measurements generally confirmed a
statement from Guy Croft about the
84mm bore head designs. “As for combustion chamber volumes, there were 2 types
of chambers used on the 42mm valve
84mm bore TC; early and late. This is
true of both US and European models.
The early one had nominally 49cc
and the late 53cc (ish).” I used 49cc
and 53cc for the volumes of the 1800
and 2L heads, respectively, in the
ratio calculations.
Engine blocks measured came
from a 2L Spider, a 2L Lancia
Zagato, and an 1800 Fiat Spider. The
main measurement done with blocks
was to establish the deck clearance (the
distance from the crown of the piston to
the top of the deck) with the US-spec stock
pistons in each. The deck clearance for
each of the other piston types could then be
calculated for each block, comparing the
compression height measured for each
with the stock piston. The 2L blocks’ deck
clearances measured 0.635mm, the 1800’s
measured 0.762mm.
Each of the pistons was measured for
compression height, crown diameter, spec
bore diameter, and distance from the top
ring to the top of the piston crown (ring
land height). These measurements were
made using a digital vernier caliper. Then
each of the pistons was measured by
burette to establish its valve relief volume
and dome displacement. Five piston types
were measured: stock 84mm 2L flat top,
stock 84mm 1800 flat top, 84.6mm
Kolbenschmidt 92-945-630 1.6mm domes,
84.4mm Mondial 66.04.4.7487 4.5mm
domes, and finally the monster of the
group, 84.6mm Mondial 66.06.4.8781 8mm
dome pistons.
To calculate the compression ratio, we
need to divide the total swept volume
by the total combustion volume and
add 1. CR=SV/CV+1. Swept volume is
calculated by (bore squared x stroke x
3.1415)/4000. Compression volume is the
sum of the chamber volume + gasket
volume + ring land gap volume + valve
reliefs – intrusion dome volume. Chamber
volume is measured with a burette; in the
case of this article we are assuming 49cc for
an 1800 head and 53cc for a 2L.
Compressed gasket volume will be based
on measurement of several used Geotze
head gaskets at 1.27mm thick x 86mm bore
diameter, 7.38cc total. Ring land gap
volume is determined by taking the total
volume of the cylinder bore diameter and
the ring land height and subtracting the
volume of the piston crown diameter and
the ring land height. Finally, as stated
earlier, the valve reliefs and dome volume
are measured with a burette.
PLEASE REFER TO CHART ON PAGE 9
FOR INFORMATION & COMPARISON
These charts should provide a good
approximation of the resulting compression
ratios with different combinations of
blocks, pistons, and heads. I would like to
expand this table to include more piston
styles and engine displacements; but, at the
time of writing, the components needed to
measure were not available.
I would like to thank several people who
helped provide information for this article.
Guy Croft for allowing me to reprint his
comments. Allen Lofland and Mike Greer
for providing the much needed volume
measurements of the 8mm dome Mondial
pistons, thus proving beyond a doubt the
10.7+ ratio of these pistons. Kelly Fiske for
furnishing measurement info on his
hybrid engine. James Freeman for several
of the comparison piston pictures. And
others who furnished needed piston model
identification and additional photos.
So, in the end, what path did I end up
following? Well, I steered clear of the
8mm dome Mondials and chose the 4.5mm
domes of the 7487 series. Thanks to a
fellow Fiat enthusiast who sold me his
.4mm oversize pistons, I now have a set
under lock and key awaiting their day to
release another tiger under the hood.
Hmm, what’s next? Volumex? Nah, after
all, it can’t possibly get any better than this,
right? (to be continued)

Check Those
Hoses
by Thad Kirk
Saturday was nice and I was taking my
son to his job. I had just got in the 81 spider
and drove off. "Hmm, something smells
like gas." I look in the rear view mirror and
there is a trail on the road that doesn't also
appear on the road in front of me. I make
a little swerve to see if the trail follows my
car. It does. I pulled into a parking lot, shut
the car off and pop the hood. All's well in
there. Then I poke my head under the car
where the fuel pump is and there is already
a puddle under the car twice the size of a
frisbee. I wiggle the hoses and it's pretty
obvious that the original 23 year old hose
coming off the fuel filter is leaking. I
wasn't far from home so I thought I'd start
it back up and see how bad it was. Maybe I
could just dart back home. I reached in and
started the car without sitting in the car.
WOW! It blew a huge cloud of gas spray
about 3 feet in diameter! I shut it off,
parked it in a shady spot, and got a 2ft piece
of proper fuel injection hose and two new
“Tutto Italiano” –Italian Car Day
Sunday may 23rd started
out murky and damp for the
9th annual “Tutto Italiano”
–Italian Car Day at the Larz
Anderson auto museum in
Brookline, Mass. Fortunately
it was not like the torrential
monsoon-like conditions of
last year.
As the day
progressed, it warmed and
brightened up.
Along with a very strong
showing of Ferrari’s, a few
Maserati’s, one Lamborguini,
three DeTomasos, and a good
representation of Alfa’s, but no
Lancias, were about a dozen FIATS. I
noted 4 or 5 Spiders (including my own ’78
in metallic green), one ‘66 1500, one x-19,
two 850 Spiders, including an Abarth, two
500’s, including one Abarth racer, and two
131’s. A woman from Albany shared pictures of her newly restored ’53 Abarth,
which took 2 /12 years to complete.
Perhaps next year she can bring the real
thing.
I spent part of my time talking to some of
the other FIAT owners and interested
spectators about “FLU” and had at least
one new member come of it. Mike Simon
and his 16 year old son Brett, who is a
budding FIAT enthusiast brought along
dad’s red ’74 Spider which he purchased
new and recently repainted; some interior
work is next on Mike and Brett’s agenda.
Mike called me for the name and number
of a good FIAT mechanic ( I have two )
and some other resources, when he
FI style clamps, then fixed it later in the
day. I was surprised how easy the hose
came off the pipe that went into the body.
Usually around here, there is so much rust
that you have to cut away at the hoses to get
them off the gas line. I used a vise grip to
softly squeeze shut the fatter hose coming
from the tank to the pump to prevent
siphoning of the tank. Anyway, 10 minute
fix and I was on my way. The big black
mark is still in the parking lot and you can
still see my trail down the road!
Be careful! Check those old hoses!
by Rusty Harris
indicated that he had
joined FLU.
I did note one issues of
“Ricambi” in one of the
show cars, but that was
just before the event
broke up and did not
get a chance to talk to
the owner.
A 1981 Spider won
first place and the
’66 1500 also went
to
the
podium.
Unfortunately, the idea
of writing an article
about the event only
occurred to me on the ride home, and I did
not get any other names. I do look forward
to meeting other FIAT fanatics next year
and would be interested in getting together
with other owners for a drive or other
activity this summer or fall.
Please call me at 781-944-0972 or e-mail
me at [email protected]. I
always like to talk FIATS. I currently have
2 Spiders and have owned 3 others, a 131,
and my wife had 2 128’s over the years.

Gator Trails Italia A Big Success!
by Evan Statman
Another milestone for the
Florida Italian Car Club, FLOFLU, was achieved Memorial Day
weekend. This month marked the
1st anniversary of the Florida chapter
with attendees from Jacksonville,
Orlando, Oldsmar,
St. Petersburg, Ft. Lauderdale
and Gainesville. On Saturday the
group rallied at the home of Sage
Viehe. With the growl of many
Ansa’s, Fiat Spiders, Bertones,
Pininfarinas and Alfa Romeo’s caravanned to the home of Import
Cars where Chuck Moody advised
us on carburetion and fuel injection.
After a tour of his shop complete
with a showing on hand of a rare
Massaratti and Triumph TR8 we
embarked on our first run.
The Saturday tour took us south
east into Ocala horse farm country
through winding shaded roads and
hills then on to the 1880’s towns of
Macintosh and Micanopy for drive
by home tours, antiquing and lunch
at the local, southern style, sloooww
dowwnnn, café! The weather was
about 95 degrees with a heat index
of 102 so a short but fast run was
made to the city of Crosscreek for a
“made in the shade” park under a
giant oak! After a brief refresh at
the local Gainesville lodge everyone
gathered again a Sage Viehe’s house
for BBQ and conversation.
The Sunday tour took us north
through canopied oaks to old
Alachua (ah latch oo way) for a short
tour passed circa 1880’s homes on
main street. Next, the famous city of
High Springs took a long run
through the farming areas where
corn and tobacco where soon to be
harvested. High Springs was on
holiday and although many of the
stores where not open this meant
that we had only the mid-Florida
heat to contend with. A wonderful
lunch was had by all at the Great
Outdoors Café and Opera House
which has been downtown for 109
years!
Our thanks to everyone who
participated and made this a fine
anniversary run: Sage And Shirley
Viehe, Cindy, Evan and Jake
Statman, Chuck Schindler, Nan &
Alan Arnold, James Christenson,
Wolfgang and Sabine Borg, Gladys
& Howard Bernstein (Alfa), Terry &
Lisbeth Getts (Alfa).
We would all like to wish our
youngest member, James Christenson,
good luck at the US Naval Academy
in Annapolis. Our future leaders
are Italian car enthusiasts.

The Pasta Fazoom Rally That Almost Wasn’t
The 5th annual Pasta Fazoom Rally
almost wasn't last year, I think the Italian
gods were testing the event. First the
traditional lakeside lunch stop notified me
with just a little over a week before the
rally that they would have to cancel out
due to illness. Being in the middle of
nowhere central NY, that's why the roads
are great, there doesn't exist many lakeside
Inn options available.Searching like the
proverbial mad man I stumbled across an
Inn on another lake which had closed for
the season. I contacted the owner who
lived downstate who thought it would
be neat to have Italian cars grace his
establishment and would reopen for the day
for us. It's truly amazing how beautiful
Italian lines and curves can influence
people's mind. Providence can't be ruled
out also. An added plus was that this Inn
is bigger with an even larger parking lot,
which was geting tight at the other venue.
In other words the rally came continue to
grow in number.
The last hurdle to overcome occurred
the morning of the rally.
RAIN!!! With around
30 minutes to the start the
drizzle continued and
only a handful of cars had
appeared making the decision to run very doubtful.
Among the handful of cars
was a Ferrari 308GTB
whose driver stated that as
long as it wasn't a deluge
he was driving. That
man possess real driving
spirit and perspective!!
Looking off to the west it
appeared that maybe the
skiies would clear so I postponed the decision for another 25 minutes. It appears
others too were watching the sky and had
13
www.flu.org
by Cal Crouch
decided it would clear or at least moderate
and in a few minutes we had 15 cars ready
to roll. The rally was a go!!
I must make a confession and tell all that
the infamous yellow X of mine continues
to frustrate me, and Wade and Walter, by
refusing to co-operate and run.
Therefore I was a designated passenger
(I hitched a ride) and rode in Tim Price's
ex Don Robinson primer coated 131.
The route continues to adhere to the
beautiful meandering back roads and now
turned into the proverbial billard table
smoothness. This include some of the
most entertaining sections of the route. At
the lunch stop, which is now almost
exactly in the middle of the route, we were
enthusiastically greeted by the owner who
was all ready for us. One of the choices
offered to the participants was the Inn's
speciality - Spiedies. This is a mouth
watering marinated meat sandwhich
which originated in Binghamton.
By meal's end there were many new
totals almost 120 miles in length. An
added plus last year was that almost
10 miles had been recently repaved and
adicted converts which included one
Walter Forlini whom the owner's
wife gave the leftovers. Walter was
a happy man.
Back on the route, the group
was challenaged with the best sections of twisties on the route. The
further we drove the clearer the skies
became such that by the routes end we
were under clear blue skies and in our tee
shirts. Seems our group appear to have
shown our worthiness for the god's in their
test and rewarded us with wonderful
weather for the cider and pass arounds and
prize drawings. One of the participants is
an Italian restaurant owner and brought
down some absolutely wonderful Italian
dip. Don't ask me what it was, all I can
say is it was hard to restrain myself from
taking it all and slurking off into the
woods. I think I might have a new
location for our Saturday night dinner get
together.
Vicks A-uto Sports again extended their
unconditional generousity and suportof
the event by their donations for the
drawings. When making a decision as to
what firm to make a purchase from there
are no finer people. Last year also included
new support from Meguairs, Classic
Motorsports and Sports Car Market
magazine. After the drawings were
completed the usual frenzied battering and
trading session occured. Some unnamed
participants made out like fat rats. I will
also mention that Tim Price won the
Meguairs paint protection prize, he is
saving this for the future when the 131 gets
some real paint on its body.
The winner of the Founder's Choice
Award, aka the scared Italian piston, was
Mike G. and his Maserati Indy. No has
yet to take me up on bribing me to choose
their car, I await the gratuities.
Instituted with last year's event was the
distribution to every entrant of a
commenerative enamelled pin. Last
year's design featured a yellow Fiat X1/9,
hey the organizor gets some recognition
even though the car never goes anywhere.
The pin design and featured car will
change every year to make them collectible
and intice peole to return in the future.
This really isn't needed as everyone loves
the event and put it high on their list of
must dos. There was also a limited supply
of Pasta Fazoom embroidered hats and
t-shirts. These sold out so quickly many
didn't know they had been available.
ALL proceeds go right back into the rally.
The Pasta Fazoom Rally will be held
this year on Sept. 26. so check out the
website at www.pastafazoom.com and
make plans to join us. Especially you Fiat
owners, you continue to dwindle in
numbers, this event was orignally set up
for you to enjoy. Any Italian vehicles can
enter. Form a group and caravan up to the
event for you longer distance travellers.
One of our regulars was unable to go on
the rally last year due to a funeral but he
came down to visit us at the start in his
VolksRomeo or was it an Alfa Wagen?
He had zip tied an Alfa Romeo grill to the
front of his VW Passat. Hope to see you
there.

SATURDAY, July 17th:
Saturday is a very special day! The first
order of business is to shoot a spectacular
early morning panoramic photograph in
the front lawn of the 108-year-old
Biltmore Estate mansion, the largest private
home in America. This promises to be
another wonderful panoramic photograph
of Fiat Lancia cars that you will always
treasure. We will depart Sunspree at 7 AM
Saturday morning for the short drive to
Biltmore and make the historic photograph
before the Estate opens to tourists.
Biltmore has agreed to give free admission
to our group until 8 AM Saturday morning.
The Estate opens for tourist traffic at
8:30AM, so we must take our photo and
be off the lawn area before the opening.
Be sure to display your FFO window
sticker (lower left side) on all vehicles to
gain entrance to Biltmore. Remember, we
will leave Sunspree for Biltmore at 7AM!
Coffee will be ready in the FLU registration
area, sponsored by Bayless Fiat Lancia
World. Make plans to be ready early, as
we will line up near the rear exit by the
golf course at the end of the parking lot.
We will place the cars in a chevron
facing the lawn. Be sure to drive directly
under the overhead string markers and
pay attention to the parking marshals.
After the photo is snapped at 8 AM sharp,
we will leave in an orderly fashion to the
breakfast venue location.
Immediately after the panoramic
photograph, we will drive through the
spectacular Biltmore Gardens, along the
French Broad River to our next stop,
“Breakfast at Biltmore” (a pre-registered
meal) at the Deerpark Restaurant on
Biltmore Estate property. Breakfast starts
at 8:30 AM and ends at 9:30 AM. This
meal got rave reviews last year, so don’t
miss it! If you don’t order breakfast, the
parking lot at Deerpark will permit some
final detailing. A small number of breakfast
tickets will be sold on location to those
who did not register.
After breakfast it’s off to the North
Carolina Arboretum, the location for our
2003 FFO Concours. Exit Biltmore’s
outer gate, turning right…bearing right
onto Highway 25 South, then pass by the
Interstate 40 junction (remain on
Highway 25 South) and look for the Blue
Ridge Parkway South entrance. The
BRP entrance is 5 miles south on
Highway 25 past the I-40 junction. Turn
right and stay on the Blue Ridge Parkway
about 5 miles to the next exit, Highway
#191. The N.C. Arboretum is located at
the Parkway exit. Remember to display
your orange or lime green 8 ? x 11” FFO
Concours dash card for free admission to
the Arboretum gate. Non-show cars
must pay $6 gate admission per car to
enter the Arboretum.
An individual digital photo will be
taken of every show and display vehicle
Fiat Freak Out-What you need to know!
in front of the Arboretum main entrance
before entering the show field lot. Be sure
to circle through the photo station. (You
are not obligated to buy a photo). Please
be patient as it takes about 15 seconds
to photograph each car. Photographed
cars will then park according to class
designation (A through N) for easy judging.
We will park 4 cars in each cluster of five
spaces to permit more room. Cars will
park facing out over each white line.
Registered owners will then judge
14 classes of cars for first, second and
third as well as People’s Choice Awards
and Best of Show. The Concours is
sponsored by Vick Autosports!
This year’s 1970’s show theme promises
to be great fun. Wear your finest 1970’s
duds! Dig it man! Bell-bottom jeans,
cutoffs, halter & tube tops, tye-dyed shirts,
rose colored glasses; hoop earrings and
groovy beads are the order of the day.
We’ll have plenty of far out 70’s music to
set turn your mood ring blue!
Pre-registered lunches ordered on your
registration form will be served at noon at
the air-conditioned Arboretum main
building. There is also a small café at the
Arboretum.
The Concours display time wraps up at
2:30 PM be sure to turn in your Concours
and People’s Choice Ballot at the FLU
tent before 3 PM.
We will depart the Arboretum for our
traditional afternoon drive, also sponsored
by Vick Autosports! The tour includes
15 miles of the Blue Ridge parkway
North of Asheville. Turn right at the
outer Arboretum gate and follow the
signs to the Blue Ridge Parkway North.
Take the “North” direction. Along the
“BRP” there is an optional stop at the
“Folk Art Center” for a quick break and
then North again on the Parkway for
6 more miles. We then turn left (watch
for this left turn!) on to Town Mountain
Road, a challenging drive uphill and then
gloriously downhill directly back to
downtown Asheville. Turn right at the
end of Town Mountain Road; proceed
through downtown Asheville. Then take
the parkway 1 mile west, cross the bridge
and return to Holiday Inn Drive and
Sunspree Resort. The entire loop is
25 miles and takes about one hour. You’ll
be back at Sunspree by 4 PM to be
refreshed for the evening banquet.
The Fiat Freak Out cocktail/social
hour starts at 6 PM at Sunspree, with dinner
to follow at 7 PM. This year’s FFO banquet
is sponsored by International Auto Parts
in Charlottesville! This is a pre-registered
meal. This exciting evening (dressy casual
attire) in the main Sunspree Ballroom gets

don’t get lost. The drive takes some of the
“roads less traveled” and crosses the lake at
three different locations. But first you have
to get out of town by crossing a toll bridge.
As fate would have it the group of 20 plus
cars got split up at the first sign of traffic, so
the first six or so cars went on ahead of the
rest of us. This second group latter got split
up as well, so we had three groups of cars
out on the drive. The first group went left
when they should have gone right and had
a little longer drive than some of us did.
Just one more amazing thing about this
group, they will follow anyone, even if they
know that person is going the wrong way,
just because they don’t want that person to
be lost alone. Now is that camaraderie or
what? The drive was a blast, scooting
along on twisty two lane with the top down
and not much heat from the newly appearing sun. The view of the lake and the boats
as you crossed the bridges was spectacular.
The perfect end to what was otherwise a
bewildering afternoon of cool wet weather.
Back at the motel, impromptu technical
secessions started. Heads were being
retorqued, as there were a number of cars
running on recently rebuilt engines, and
timing was being checked and just about
any other technical question you could
think of was being addressed by one of the
more experienced club members. Another
amazing thing about this group, if you can
25
www.flu.org
get your car there, it will almost always
leave in better shape than it arrived. There
is no apparent end to the technical expertise
that shows up at MOFLO. We have
installed new convertible tops, rebuilt
IDFs, installed radios, desmoged cars,
gotten rid of rattles and made countless
other improvements to the cars, all just
because we are Fiat Freaks that want to
help other Fiat Freaks.
At a quarter to seven Saturday evening
we headed to the Bear Creek Valley Golf
Club for dinner. The weather was great for
the drive over but I don’t think anyone left
his or her top down while we were in the
restaurant. We had all learned by now just
how quickly the weather can change in this
part of the country.
Dinner was great and
afterwards we had a few
activities that started
with the auctioning of
one of the last Guy Croft
books available. The
book was donated and
signed by Guy Croft and
his deed of gift stipulated the proceeds go to
mirafiroi.com to help
pay for computer
upgrades. After dinner
we voted for best in
show, and once again there were a lot of
cars garnering votes, just shows the quality
of the many different cars that come to
MOFLO. When the dust cleared, the winner was a black Lancia Scorpion that has
been painstakingly restored as a Monte
Carlo by Allen Lofland. Some of you may
remember this car from FFO ’03 as it won
the Lancia class. We also had a short concert, “The Twin Cam Blues” by the musical duo of Chandler and Conlin; these guys
are a real kick in the pants and do a very
nice job of getting everyone in a good mood
when it’s time to pick up the tabs for dinner.
There aren’t any long speeches at dinner,
and for good reason, there are go-karts to
be ridden. I was asked why a bunch of guys
that own sports cars want to rent go-karts?
For me the answer was simple, I can drive
with reckless abandon. I can tell you
however, that if you want to get an
appreciation of how well your Fiat rides,
take a few laps in one of these things. We
had about twenty people on the track at the
same time, with fathers and sons, and kids
of all ages. It’s a great way to let some of
that pent up energy out and you won’t get
a ticket.
Those that didn’t ride the karts were
back at the motel telling lies in the parking
lot, and were soon joined by the kart riders,
who were also telling lies about how they
passed this person or that person on the
track. The BS went on into the night when
the winds picked up and it looked like
another storm was about to blow in.
Sunday morning was damp and cool.
The rain was just ending as people were
starting to move about. Just one more time
to wipe down the cars, it hasn’t been this
clean in a long time. We started off with
coffee and donuts and some fresh fruit.
A large crowd went to a late breakfast as
others headed for home. Still others were
headed to the Premium Outlets mall,
another amazing thing about this group,
we’ll do anything to keep our wives and
significant others happy and letting us buy
Fiat parts.

1975 FIAT 124CC SPORT COUPE- This is
the rare, Series III (CC) 2 door sedan, not
the convertible. Second owner of this
well maintained, 47,000 mile, rust free
Fiat. Has 5spd, new NOS exhaust, new
Pirelli tires, and sharp black paint. White
seats with added blue material inserts.
Has travelled little in the past ten years,
and was always maintained by a Fiat
technician. Rides on Cromodora mags in
fine condition. Truly needs nothing and
is started and driven monthly. Comes with
many NOS parts. Serious inquiries only;
must be seen. $4,000. Long Island, NY.

_________________________________
'73 850 Spider - Running shape. not
licensed or inspected but they've only been
expired for a year and will easily pass. Some
dings, most notably a crease in the nose.
Paint is chipping off the rear panel of the
car. The bumpers aren't so hot but could be
fixed or replaced readily. Many new parts
recently installed, including brakes and
wheel cylinders, radiator, rebuilt carb,
exhaust, alternator, kingpins and convertible top. over 80,000 miles and the motor
is a bit smoky, but it's still a fun drive.
There is some minor rust, but it could be
taken care of easily. The interior is almost
entirely black except for the rear shelf. The
driver's seat will need a slip cover installed.
I have a dash with no cracks
to go with the car to replace the one that's
in there now. PRICE: $1,250 Contact [email protected] for more info.
'71 850 Spider - I have the original NJ
title but I've never transferred it to my
name. French blue and the chrome looks
immaculate. I think the P.O. had just
refinished it. The paint is also new but
needs a buffing. The top will need to be
replaced, and the seats are covered, but
the rest of the interior looks great. The
bad: Needs a gas tank (I have one) and a
couple parts I've robbed for the green
one (valve cover, coolant overflow bottle,
and one relay). It will also need some
welding underneath. Other than that, the
car is in nice shape. The engine does run
when hooked up to an alternate fuel tank
(5gal. can, etc.) and it sounds good.
Shifter seems nice and tight though I've
never driven the car. This is a 75%
restoration job that just needs the last
25% to be a nice car. PRICE: $750 obo
The cars are located in Jeannette, PA
which is about 25 miles southeast of
Pittsburgh. Cash takes 'em, and buyer is

colorful displays that were once something
given out at auto shows back in the midlate eighties when the car was introduced.

top of each other in its colors of yellow and
gray against the black background. Bags
are double walled. $7.50 pair, includes
