Chants
The words I write here are just sign posts to a very dynamic and
multifaceted experience. I've done my best to describe what's
happened for me. When we sing songs with feeling and heartfelt
intention they become prayer. To truly understand mantra you'll
need to chant and experience it for yourself.
Many ancient sciences developed chants for a range of reasons.
Mantras are crafted to benefit the practitioner with particular
physical, mental or spiritual effects. When chanting we repeat a
mantra or a prayer over and over. It helps to still the mind with
something therapeutic and sacred. The Sanskrit meaning of “Man”
is the mind, and “tra” means across. A mantra is something that
crosses the mind to help it into meditation. A mantra creates certain
sounds, vibrations and feelings. They also stimulate pressure points
in the mouth and these pressure points are known to activate
glands all over the body.
I often use a Mala to count 108 repetitions of a mantra. 108 is a
good number to experience the effects. If I'm not using a Mala I'll
usually chant for 3,7,11,22 or 31 minutes at a time. When I'm
practicing a new focus for a chant I usually slow down and give
myself some space to fully experience what's happening. Before
chanting I like to embody the meaning and emotion of the mantra.
Each chanting experience is unique and perfect for the moment.
Experimenting with the following has enhance my chanting
experience:
 Keep the meaning of the mantra firmly in mind as you chant.
 Feel the meaning in your body as you chant, slow the chant
down enough so that you can feel the emotion of each line.
 Feel the emotions in your body when you contemplate the
meaning of the entire chant. Stay with this emotion as you
chant.
1
13 Weeks to Awakening
 Focus on feeling and following the tip of your tongue while
chanting.
 Use your navel powerfully as you chant and breathe.
 Stay very present with each syllable and each movement of
your tongue. Keep clear awareness of every little detail.
 Whisper the chant, and feel the delicate movement of your
tongue in your mouth.
 Chant from your heart and give it everything you have. Let
your full expression flow freely.
 Focus on breathing deeply and chanting in long breaths.
 Notice how a smile while chanting changes your experience.
 Direct your chant internally; Let the chant vibrate inside you
and then naturally resonate outwards through the body.
 Open your awareness to the entire sensory experience as you
chant. Float in the sea of sensation.
 After chanting take a few minutes in silence. Be still and
allow yourself to fully feel what's happening in the body. Be
aware of how the chant has changed things.
You can chant by yourself, in a group, while cleaning the house or
walking the dog. Give yourself to the mantra. Surrender to the
experience and just let it be what it is. Opportunities to chant are
infinite, unique and always perfect. Try it yourself and use these
mantras in any way that feels right to you.
You can find more information on mantras and their use at:
http://www.SpiritVoyage.com/mantrahome.aspx
The mantras included in this book are not written by me. I did write “I
love you” but I'm not the first to do that. Many of these mantras have
been used across the globe for generations as part of meditative practice.
Most of the mantra meanings are not literal translations. They are my
best effort to describe each mantras core essence and intention.

Ahh:
A single tone, when we just let sound flow without trying to restrict
or change anything. Just hold the jaw position, the mouths, lips and
tongue with or without making a sound has helped me increase
awareness.
The meaning of this mantra is nothing which is the beauty of it.
When chanting this mantra I've enjoyed deep mental silence and
presence. With practice the space between thoughts naturally grew
longer. It's often used for manifesting by feeling an emotion or
situation that you want to live and chanting Ahhhh. This
combination of presence, intention and emotion is a powerful
recipe.

Gayatri Mantra:
Known as the Mother of all Vedas. This powerful mantra is said to
activate all the pressure points in the mouth and have the seed of
all other mantras within it. Chanting the Gayatri has experientially
shown me that everything is divine. It helped me become aware of
how the subtle resonance of being alive feels in this body. From
awareness of the life spark in this body I could feel the same life
spark all bodies. I feel that the entity being adored in the meaning
of this mantra is that universal life spark in everything. An
experiential introduction to the Sanskrit word “Namaste”.

I Love You:
This is a powerful healing mantra I've used to immerse myself in
love. Sending love to myself, my relationships and the entire
universe. The reactions in my body have been extreme when
feeling and embodying the words as I say them. Trying different
inclinations, tones and volumes has also had interesting results. At
first it was a very challenging mantra but after sticking with it my
resistances to love fell away and feeling true love for everything
become not only comfortable but natural.

Jewel Lotus Flower:
This is a blend of English and Sanskrit. The English part is a
melodic and deeply profound interpretation of the Sanskrit

noticed how my mouth naturally ends up in a smile while chanting
this one. I often find myself chanting this as I go about daily chores.

sessions. I use it to close many different types of meditation.
It feels really good to give this blessing to myself, the group and the
universe as I move from meditation practice into the rest of the day.

Maha Mantra (Hare Krishna):
10
13 Weeks to Awakening
A very popular and powerful mantra known as the great mantra of
deliverance. From the Sanskrit scriptures of ancient India, it's made
up of three holy names for God. I love the way it flows. I feel
infinite energy and joy when chanting this mantra.
Words:
Hare Krishna Hare Krishna
Krishna Krishna Hare Hare
Hare Rama Hare Rama
Rama Rama Hare Hare
Meaning:
Hare = the energy of God.
Krishna = all attractive qualities in the universe in a single
Godhead.
Rama = reservoir of infinite pleasure.

Mahamrityunjaya Mantra:
Known as the great death-conquering Mantra, this mantra is also
identified with Shiva. I interpret death in this context as meaning
fear. When I feel fear in the body it's a contraction; a closing down
and dying. Very much the opposite of what vibrance, love and
open-hearted life feels like. I usually chant this one in long sittings
of more than 15 minutes. I've felt graceful liberation from
discomfort while chanting this mantra. Like ripe fruit effortlessly
plucked from the vine.
Words:
11
13 Weeks to Awakening
Om Try-Ambakam Yajaamahe
Sugandhim Pusstti-Vardhanam
Urvaarukam-Iva Bandhanaan
Mrtyor-Mukssiiya Maa-[A]mrtaat
Meaning:
Oh infinite divine, we meditate on the Three-Eyed One (Lord
Shiva).
The fragrant essence that nourishes and nurtures all beings.
Please liberate us from death as effortlessly as ripe fruit is easily
snapped from the vine.
Liberating me with the knowing that we are always immersed in
the nectar of our divine, immortal nature.

Mul Mantra:
Mul or Mool means root. In this single mantra is the distilled
teachings of the entire Sikh holy book. The Mul mantra is said to be
the first utterings by Guru Nanak after he found enlightenment.
This mantra often comes to me when I need a reset, like a rolling
recording in my head. I've felt this mantra clear and centre my
experience. Deeply feeling my connection with myself and
everything in the universe. Each mantra is unique and it's an
understatement to say that this one is phenomenally powerful!
It has everything!
Words:

Akaal moort,
Ajoonee, Saibhang,

Aad such, Jugad such, Haibhee such,
Naanak hosee bhee such.
Meaning:
The Creator and all the universe are One. Truth (the
divine/now/life/the universe/reality as it is) is our identity.
The life spark, source and doer of everything.
Incapable of fear, incapable of vengeance,
Immortal image of the infinite,
Never born, self illumined and always complete in the self,
This is the gift that disperses shadows. Meditate!
True from the beginning, True for eternity, True now,
As Nanak says, it's forever true.

Nam Myoho Renge Kyo:
This is such an elegant mantra. It rolls out naturally in a steady
looping flow. The tone, pace and the vibration together are like a
force of nature. I usually practice focusing on an altar but
13

sometimes just close my eyes and feel it. Staying with all these
aspects of the mantra has effortlessly neutralised the thinker
leading to long periods of complete presence and a life of divine
grace.
Words:
Nam Myoho Renge Kyo
Meaning:
I surrender myself to the marvellous Law of the Lotus Flower Sutra
Detailed Breakdown:
Nam = devotion.
Myo = strange, mystery or miracle.
Ho = law.
Renge = cause and effect (lotus flower).
Kyo = sound, sutra or teaching.

Om (Aum):
This is used a lot by itself and as a part of other mantras. I see this
sound as the undercurrent of the universe. An honouring and
connection with everything, past, present, future, within and
without. The entire universe all at once. I usually chant it slowly,
clearly pronounce it as A-U-M. I feel the vibration in my chest and
open to the infinite vastness of the mantra. A beautiful way to chant
this mantra in a group is to all chant long Oms in your own time
and have them layer and overlap. It's common to close meditation
with Om followed by three chants of Shanti (peace).

Om Namah Shivaya:
I find this an inwardly paradoxical chant. I tend to delve deep
inside myself bringing reverence and humble honouring to the
very centre of my being. Deeper, deeper, deeper and deeper I dive
inside myself with open-hearted adoration. I come to a stillness,
emptiness and nothingness. As I adore this still core, I find myself
showered with adoration. I am somehow showering everything in
the universe with adoration because it's all the same still core at the
heart of everything. That core of self is the adorer and the adored
across every cell of the universe. It feels as if every unit of reverence
I give is bounced back magnified. As if between two mirrors who
are really the same mirror. Magnifying on each exchange again and
again and again in an exponential explosion of adoration.
Words:
Om Namah Shivaya
Meaning:
I bow down and honour the divine in all.

Om Shrim Maha Lakshmiyei Swaha:
Also known as the Abundance mantra. It's an honouring and
invocation of the Hindu Goddess Lakshmi. As with all invocations,
I see Lakshmi as a representation of the good fortune, prosperity,
and beauty that is within us all. This mantra helps us connect with
and feel these properties within ourselves. In chanting this mantra I
not only feel strong and clear prosperity in my body I also feel a
powerful commitment and knowing that whatever it takes would
be done. I'm free to flow with the feelings and not so attached to the
16

specific outcomes. I felt empowered to express myself fully and
dance in the infinite abundance that surrounds me.
Words:

When chanting this mantra I feel very connected. Silent and aware
of the subtleties of connectedness. My heart swells and warms as I
open in love for the entire universe. It's known as the Love
vibration mantra.
Words:

Reverence and celebration for all life. In chanting this I sometimes
want to laugh, cry, scream, bow down, jump and dance in an openhearted celebration of every aspect of the universe.

Re Man Shabad:
Wow... what to say about the Re Man Shabad... It changed my life!
This mantra was originally shared by Guru Gobind Singh and is
very handy for people wanting to live a life of service.
It was strong and confronting at first, like learning to use a very
heavy and phenomenally powerful tool. It took practice to start
chanting it fast. Some mental stories, habit patterns and feelings of
separation came up to be seen, loved and let go before dropping
into long periods of presence like I had never felt before. In
chanting it for days on end It showed me that presence and
enlightenment are sustainable and can become a natural way of
life. It sat me in the cockpit of this experience. With effortless grace
18
13 Weeks to Awakening
I was able to explore and use intuition, the body, the mind and the
universal energy system. It's such a complex, long and challenging
mantra. Chanting it fast and for long periods requires intense
presence, precision and focus. This long hold of presence not only
built a new habit, it feels like it's changed the way this body
vibrates. The mind perceives differently too. It experientially
showed me three key parts of the mantras meaning:
 Reality is shrill! (Each moment is very, very, VERY loud!!!)
 Drink it all! (The only comfortable way is to accept and open
your heart to all experience).
 Death shall never approach you (Death is fear, fear lives in
mental stories and not the very loud NOW I was talking
about).
If you want to do long stints of the Re Man Shabad I highly
recommend a retreat with the phenomenal Guru Dev Singh Khalsa.

Sa Ta Na Ma:
I've mainly used this mantra while doing Kirtan Kriya but it
occasionally comes into my mind as a fluid stream of primal tones
“Sa-Ta-Na-Ma”. It's been very stabilising and balancing. Like a tire
balance for the mind, body and spirit. Its elegance and grace can
disguise its power.

Silence – Delerium / Sarah McLachlan:
This song just came to me in Patience Week. I didn't know its name,
just that the words “in this silence; I believe” were on repeat in my
head and I was sure I'd heard Sarah McLachlan sing it before. It
was my invitation to step into silence as a path to patience.
Liberating myself from the need to do anything. I sat and became
comfortable with stillness again. I wept when reading the lyrics for
the first time. It was a statement, a revelation and a prayer. In so
many ways it was exactly the mantra I needed at the time.

So Hum:
This one has been very subtle but effective in cultivating presence
and connecting me with my infinite self. I usually practice it
inhaling with the “So” and exhaling with “Hum”. It's flowed into
my mind a few times when I've felt the need for mental silence.
Words:

Tantric Har:
This mantra is a doozy! A lot bundled up in a single syllable. I roll
the “R” and chant it with a forceful pump of the naval. Out of all
the mantras I use, this one seems to draw the most responses from
animals. It's known to bring in prosperity on all levels. I've felt it
invigorate everything like a natural opening to proactive action
receiving all at once. In as little as 3 minutes I've had the embodied
experience of prosperity.

Vajrasattva Mantra (Short version):
I feel this mantra very literally to its meaning. The “Om” brings an
opening and expansion. Then there's a complexity, power and focus
in the “Vajra Sattva” that unlocks something. It feels like a graceful
purification and empowerment that happens naturally while the
mind is occupied with the mantra. The “Hum” feels like a release
to the eternally connected divine. A powerful formula blended
together in a mantra that comes alive when repeated over and over.
Words:
Om Vajra Sattva Hum
Meaning:
Om = infinite/divine.
Vajra = thunderbolt or thunderstorm, infinitely powerful.
Sattva = purity, existence, reality, truth.
Hum = indivisible unity, all being an indivisible part of the divine.

Wopila Olowan:
This is a prayer I sing in ceremony, while walking and even just
dancing around the house. I sing it when I want to cultivate
gratitude and sometimes when I'm feeling gratitude it just comes
out. I feel myself exploding with gratitude. Gratitude pulsing
through every fibre of my being. It's gratitude for now in a very allencompassing way. Wopila sums it up in one word: Thank you to
all creation for every instant that led to and makes up this moment.

13 Weeks to Awakening
About The Author
I grew up in a small Australian country town and wasn't very
spiritual growing up. With my mother's encouragement I did do
some brief religious study and some yoga and meditation for 6
months in my teens but up until recently I considered myself an
atheist. I'm still very open-minded, experiential and matter of fact
with my belief system. I've just seen a lot of “miracles” over the last
few years. I now travel the work serving our community in any
way I can. That includes sharing services through talking with
people, shamanic sessions, meditation, writing, workshops,
ceremony, consulting, a podcast (TSATR.com), charities and any
other way that feels right on the day.
Two years before writing this book I worked as a senior IT
engineer/manager specialising in large-scale systems,
infrastructure and security. I was an active member of the
technology community and a passionate Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu and
Mixed Martial Arts athlete.
I was getting injured a lot and didn't feel very good about my
personal, work or sporting life. I felt that I wasn't living to my
fullest potential in all areas. This had me reflecting on my success to
date. I finally let down my guard and became honest with myself.
On paper I had everything I'd ever wanted and I still didn't like
who I was. I felt some degree of anxiety and insecurity about
everything regardless of whether I'd done my best or done an
outstanding job. I also felt some stress about being, doing or having
the next thing. From the outside people believed I was a happy and
successful man... A long way from the truth. I reflected on my
entire life and the social structure I grew up in. I noticed that many
people see this state of discontent as a “normal” way to live. I now
call it “comfortable suffering”: When you're suffering but not to the
point where change MUST happen. There was some perceived
comfort and familiarity in that suffering. It was hurting me but I

was also addicted to it. Now I've got immense gratitude for all this
suffering. It gifted me with the commitment and passion to do
what ever it would take to find genuine happiness.
I visited Rhett Strauss, a local Chek practitioner on the Gold Coast
in Australia. Amongst many things he recommended fresh organic
food, minimising television and reading Rumi before bed. I was
lucky enough to study meditation and yoga with the brilliant and
wise team at Essence of Living on the Gold Coast. I'd done Yoga
and Palates there as cross training for a few years but had only just
started “hearing” what they were saying. A friend I met at the
organic markets introduced me to Deepak Chopra and Wayne
Dyer. I began to go through and read everything I could get my
hands on. I constantly had tapes running in the car and did
meditations every morning and night.
Within six months I was working with Native American medicine
teachers. These traditions remain a core part of my daily practice. I
eventually expanded my practice of Native American traditions
and started doing Kundalini yoga as taught by Yogi Bhajan ®.
Somewhere around this point I began to realise that no one was
going to do the work for me. The most profound shifts would come
from my own work and realisations. I immersed myself in constant
learning and practical application of these teachings into my daily
life.
I started to feel overwhelmed with all the information I was taking
in. I felt I had to stop and look inside for wisdom. At that point I
felt drawn to simplify things and start practicing the process now
known as 13 Weeks to Awakening.
It's been an honour to move into a life of service. The system,
structure and practice of 13 Weeks has delivered me to a place
where I unconditionally love myself exactly as I am. I live a simple
life filled with creativity, blissful heartfelt expression and service.

It's deeply touching to see people's smiles of joy as this system
helps them to blossom into a life of empowerment and happiness.
I'm eternally grateful to all my teachers, friends and relations for
their past, present and continued guidance. We are a worldwide
community and I love you all dearly. Thank you for being you.
