As we reflect back on
2012 we wanted to share
some of the year’s highlights
with you in this Annual Report.
First, we want to personally thank you for
your commitment to WFYI Public Media. Your gifts of
time, treasure and advocacy are priceless. They not only
make the award-winning local and national radio and
television programming possible, they also strengthen
our community with opportunities of life-long enrichment
that only public service media can deliver.
Quality local television productions were, once again,
the hallmark of WFYI in 2012. The WFYI Productions
team worked with area partners to produce quality local
television programming. These local productions earned
seven regional Emmy Awards and two awards from
the Indianapolis chapter of the Society of Professional
Journalists (SPJ).
The WFYI Public Radio news team earned four awards
from the Indianapolis chapter of the SPJ. This same
news team also received two awards from the Indiana AP
Broadcasters Association, as well as a Spectrum Award
from the Indiana Broadcasters Association for “Best
Cultural Programming.” And for the second consecutive

year, 90.1 WFYI was voted “Best
Radio Station” in Indianapolis by
the readers of NUVO Newsweekly.
Through your support, WFYI Public Media
was able to amplify its impact beyond traditional
broadcasting directly into the lives of Hoosiers. We
expanded our groundbreaking efforts of American
Graduate: Let’s Make it Happen, inspiring direct
community action to improve the high school graduation
rate in Central Indiana. In collaboration with community
partners, WFYI deployed its station resources to focus
on four key areas: health, education, the arts and news/
public affairs.
WFYI has been able to enhance its exemplary services to
the Central Indiana community through the generosity
of individual members, volunteers, corporate sponsors,
foundations and community partners.

WFYI Community Engagement
WFYI’s focus on community engagement and education
sets it apart from other broadcasters. WFYI’s efforts
extend radio and television programming through
community conversations, workshops, forums, training
opportunities and tools for educators and students.
Dealing with the drop out issue is critical to the future
of our community and country. Our involvement with
American Graduate is about improving youth outcomes.
WFYI believes an American Graduate is more than a high
school diploma. An American Graduate is a successful
adult. Harnessing the technology and educational
resources of public media along with a unified community
response provides opportunities to address the issues in
new and innovative ways.
WFYI partners with more than 40 community
organizations. WFYI staff members volunteer regularly
in a local middle school, and WFYI provides parents,
educators, students and community organizations with
tools and resources. WFYI hosted more than 1,500
guests at conversations about education, convened two
public policy summits on education issues, helped to
recruit tutors and mentors, and produced more than 20
television spots highlighting effective practices.
WFYI dedicated 17 hours of airtime – more
than any other station in the nation – to
televise American Graduate Day’s local and national
programming. WFYI radio produced 34 weekly news
reports, eight No Limits call-in programs, and stories
contributed by young reporters. All of this was designed
to raise awareness, stimulate conversation and encourage
action.
IndyTalks encourages residents to converse, connect and
create through meaningful civic dialogue about Central
Indiana’s future. WFYI is a cofounder of the IndyTalks
initiative, now in its third year.
It was play time at WFYI’s 2012 Spirited Chase. This
popular event, part of the Spirit and Place Festival,
sent participants to seven mystery destinations all over
Indianapolis to experience “Play” in new ways.
PBS Learning Media in Indiana delivers high-quality
digital resources to classrooms daily. Students learn more
and are engaged in content that enriches and inspires
learning. In addition, Indiana educators learn new skills
through PBS TeacherLine.

WFYI Public Television
WFYI presents high-caliber public affairs and educational
television programs exclusively on three digital channels –
WFYI 1 (HD 20.1), WFYI 2 (DT 20.2) and WFYI 3 (DT 20.3).
Twenty-seven new locally-produced documentaries
premiered in 2012, showcasing everything from
Indianapolis Super Bowl Legacy projects, to barn dances,
to the history of aviation in Indiana.
These programs joined a lineup of WFYI signature series
including Indiana Expeditions with Rick Crosslin, Indiana
Lawmakers, Indiana Week in Review, Across Indiana and
Inside INdiana Business with Gerry Dick.
WFYI’s talented team of producers was nominated for
16 Regional Emmy Awards in 2012. Projects done by, or
in partnership with, WFYI earned seven Regional Emmy
Awards, and two additional awards from the Indianapolis
chapter of the Society of Professional Journalists.

WFYI Public Radio programs

WFYI’s award-winning
broadcasters delivered
timely reports about activities at the
Statehouse, local and national elections, as well as
concerns surrounding health, education, the arts and
more. For the second consecutive year, the station
was voted the “Best of Indy” by the readers of NUVO
Newsweekly in the newspaper’s annual Best of Indy
competition.
Public Radio for Central Indiana
Through college partnerships with Franklin College, to
the south, and Wabash College, to the west, WFYI extends
its radio service to more Indiana listeners. WFYI provides
NPR, PRI and BBC programming on the student-run
radio stations.
WFYI Public Radio offers two distinct services over the
air and online. 90.1 WFYI-HD1 offers a mix of national and
local arts and public affairs programs like No Limits,
Indiana Week in Review, Indiana Lawmakers,
The Art of the Matter, The Blues House Party

video, audio and more, are designed to provide a more
enhanced viewer and listener experience.

Indiana Reading and Information Services (IRIS) is a free
on-demand communications link for Central Indiana
residents who are print impaired.
IRIS staff and volunteers provide this service for those
who cannot read normal print – due to blindness, low
vision, physical impairments, illness, learning disorders
or illiteracy – allowing them to stay connected with their
communities through local news and information, or to
relax with a good book.

Community Events
In July, the second annual
WFYI Golf Scramble,
presented by Faegre
Baker Daniels,
rewarded golfers
with a beautiful
day at Prairie View
Golf Club. The event
brought together WFYI
supporters and celebrities
for a fun-filled day of golf
and camaraderie.
In March, WFYI’s 13th annual Ice Miller Indy Wine
Fest drew a crowd of more than 1,000 wine
enthusiasts to the Indiana Roof Ballroom. Local
wineries and other wine experts shared their
vintages from across the state and around the
world.
WFYI’s free family festival, PBS KIDS in the
Park, presented by Marsh, returned to Military
Park in White River State Park in June. For its
19th year, the station’s gift back to the community

characters, entertainment

firm, to bring a new research
facility to downtown Indianapolis.
MarketVibes Research @ WFYI is
located at 1630 N. Meridian St., and
provides researchers, moderators
and companies with a state-ofthe-art facility for focus groups,
product testing, one-on-one
interviews and more.
WFYI 1 dedicates an unprecedented
17 hours of airtime to an education
marathon as part of its American
Graduate initiative. This multi-year
partnership with local public media
stations, schools and organizations
has one goal in mind – increasing
Indiana’s high school graduation
rate. The American Graduate
Day marathon covered education
issues from local, national and
international perspectives. The
broadcast also highlighted more
than a dozen local organizations
working to reduce the high school
dropout rate.
PBS KIDS in the Park, presented
by Marsh, returns to Military Park
in White River State Park. For 19
years, this free celebration has
drawn thousands of families to a
day of entertainment, activities
and opportunities to meet some of
their favorite PBS KIDS characters,
including Shock from the Electric
Company.
WFYI serves its volunteers during

topics through dynamic keynote
speakers, breakout sessions and
screenings by local healthcare
organizations.

was also part of WFYI’s American
Graduate initiative.
