Ding. Wenn wir unser Fernrohr auf die Haustür eines Nachbarn ausrichten, um zu sehen,
wer da so täglich ein und aus geht, dann tun wir unrecht und schaffen böses Blut. Wenn
wir aber ein Buch aufschlagen, um durch diesen öffentlich dargebotenen Lebensstoff zu
erfahren, was einem anderen Menschen im Laufe seiner Lebensreise so begegnet ist und
wie er es genutzt oder vertan hat, dann tun wir recht. Wir bereichern uns selber und damit
die Menschheit um das Maß unserer gewonnenen Einsichten.
Ja, ich empfehle Ihnen heute das Genre der Biografie. Endlos ist die Zahl der vorliegenden
Lebensberichte. Sie brauchen nur irgendeinen mehr oder weniger bekannten Namen zu
wählen, und der Buchmarkt wird Ihnen eine Biografie liefern, manchmal gleich einen
ganzen Stoß. Was „gut“ ist, oder „nicht so gut“, oder „total uninteressant“, lässt sich nicht
verallgemeinern, denn dieses Urteil erwächst aus der Erwartung des jeweiligen Lesers, die
ihrerseits der jeweils eigen-artigen personalen Struktur entspringt. So können meine
Empfehlungen nur meine eigenen Präferenzen spiegeln. Und mir geht es beim Einblick in
ein anderes Leben nicht so sehr um die bloßen Lebens- oder Karriere-Fakten des Was,
Wann, Wo, Wie oft, mit Wem etc.etc., sondern darum, was ich über diesen Menschen
erfahre und von ihm lernen kann. In diesem Sinne lege ich Ihnen drei Bücher auf den
Tisch, die mich in jüngster Vergangenheit tief bewegt haben:
Eve Curie: Madame Curie (erste deutsche Ausgabe 1937)
Die Tochter der bahnbrechenden Wissenschaftlerin Marie Curie (geb. Mania Sklodowska,
1867-1934) schreibt mit unaufdringlicher Akribie und liebendem Feingefühl das
außergewöhnliche Leben ihrer Mutter: die Geschichte einer hingebungsvoll arbeitenden
polnischen Studentin, die ihr unterjochtes Vaterland floh, einen französischen
Wissenschaftler heiratete und mit ihm, ungeachtet aufreibender Armut und zahlreicher
Hindernisse und Gefährdungen, dem Radium auf die Spur kam und mit ihren
Forschungsergebnissen die ganze neuzeitliche Physik umstieß und zum Neuansatz
zwang. Wofür sie 1903 zum Ärgernis vieler männlicher Kollegen mit dem Nobelpreis
geehrt wurde.
Georgina Howell: Daughter of the Desert. The Remarkable Life of Gertrude Bell
(2006)
Als Tochter des englischen Industriellen Sir Hugh Bell konnte die vielseitig begabte und
unerschrocken entschlossene Gertrude (1867-1926) ihren diversen Leidenschaften
Fähigkeiten nachgehen, sei es als Bergsteigerin, Fotografin, Archäologin, Arabistin,
Linguistin, Schriftstellerin, Dichterin, Spionin und Diplomatin. Auch die Wüste Arabiens, in
der sie Unglaubliches geleistet hat, kann ihre Spuren nicht verwehen. – Ein sorgfältig
dokumentiertes, in jeder Hinsicht beeidruckendes Lebensbild der „Gertrude of Arabia,“ die
neben dem König Faisal auch den „Lawrence“ persönlich kannte.
Helmuth Thielicke. Zu Gast auf einem schönen Stern. Erinnerungen (1986)
Auf dem Buchdeckel steht geschrieben, und ich kann es nicht besser sagen: „Helmut
Thielicke [1908-86], einer der meistgelesenen und meistgehörten Theologen unserer Zeit,
erzählt sein langes, erfülltes Leben in anekdotisch aufgelockerter Form, spannend und
humorvoll. Sein Lebensbericht ist zugleich eine intensive Zeugenschaft der bedeutsamsten
historischen Entwicklungen unseres [20.] Jahrhunderts. H.T. vermittelt informative
Einblicke in die Innengeschichte der deutschen Universität und in das religiöse Leben
unserer Zeit.“ Dieser menschliche Mann Gottes und der Welt hat nicht umsonst auf
unserem schlimmen doch schönen Stern gelebt und geschrieben.

The band is practicing songs for the upcoming Coupe de
Mondiale Festival which will occur in mid-August here in
Victoria.
We are trying to confirm an open stage event to be held
at the Edelweiss Club, but so far have no firm commitments from the Coupe organizer to our offer to host this
event. As we find out more about the Coupe, we’ll pass it
along.
On May 19th, we will be providing entertainment for an
event that is being hosted by the Victoria Swiss Society in
celebration of 100 years of the Swiss Consulate in Vancouver.
In addition to the VAC band playing at this event, there
will be other entertainers such as the Swiss choir from
Vancouver and Alphorn players.
There will be a Dinner ($30 for non-members) at 6 pm,
and concert starting at 8 pm. Cost for the concert only is
$10. A dance will follow.
This is open to the public and EVERYONE WELCOME.
The event is on Sunday, May 19th, at the Vacation Inn
and Conference Centre, 3020 Douglas St. For tickets call

Recipe of the Month:
Turtle Burgers
Unser Literaturkreistreffen am Dienstag, dem 14. Mai 2013,
um 14:00 Uhr, in der Hubertus Klause (Upper Bar) steht
erneut im Zeichen des größten deutschen Dichters: Johann
Wolfgang von Goethe (1749 - 1832). Dr. Angelika Arend
übernimmt die Leitung dieses Nachmittags und kündigt das
Thema wie folgt an: “Harzreise im Winter 1777 und 1869.
Betrachtungen zur hymnischen Dichtkunst des jungen
Goethe und ihrer rhapsodischen Vertonung durch Johannes Brahms.” Goethes Gedicht über seine Reise in
den Harz im Winter 1777 wird erläutert, und wir kommen in
den Genuß, uns Johannes Brahms’ (1833 - 1897) Vertonung einiger Strophen dieses Gedichts, Alt-Rhapsodie
Opus 53, entstanden im Jahre 1869, Soloistin: Kathleen
Ferrier, anzuhören. Die Struktur des Nachmittags soll weniger einseitiger Vortrag als allseitige Gemeinschaftsarbeit
sein.
Am Dienstag, dem 11. Juni 2013, um 14:00 Uhr, wird unsere Gastsprecherin, Christine Bonyadi, dieser herrlichen
Jahreszeit besonderen Nachdruck verleihen durch ihren
Vortrag: Frühlings- und Sommergefühle in den Werken
Theodor Storms (1817 - 1888). Passende Gedichte werden gelesen, Novellen und seine frühen Sommergeschichten berührt und evtl. sogar Märchenerzählungen. Auch
dieses soll eine Gemeinschaftsarbeit (-vergnügen) werden.

Lean Ground Beef (enough to make 4 burgers)
1 package of Hot Dogs
1 package of Bacon (at least ten strips)
Cheddar cheese (or any cheese of your choice)
Spices (salt, pepper, chives, ground mustard, Worcestershire sauce)
Preheat oven to 400 degrees F (200 degrees C).
1. Mix ground beef, chives, salt, Worcestershire sauce, and ground
mustard; divide in fourths and make 4 thick oval-shaped burgers. Top
each burger with a slice of sharp Cheddar cheese and about 2 tablespoons of chopped sweet onion.
2. Poke 2 holes in the long ends of each burger with your fingers for
the heads and tails. Insert half a hot dog into the head and tail holes,
letting the rounded ends of the hot dogs poke out about 1 1/2 inches.
Press to secure. Poke 2 more holes on each side of the burger and insert 2 more hot dog halves on each side for legs. Cut 2 small slits, about
3/4 inch long, into the ends of the legs to make toes.
3. Place 3 halved bacon slices onto a work surface, sides touching.
Weave 3 more bacon slices into the first ones, facing 90 degrees to the
first slices, to make a woven bacon piece; lay the woven bacon onto a
burger, arranging bacon between heads, legs, and tails. Secure with
toothpicks.
4. Place a baking rack into a large roasting pan; lay the baconwrapped turtle burgers onto the rack and cover lightly with foil.
5. Bake in the preheated oven until the burgers are no longer pink in
the middle and hot dog ends are browned, 20 to 30 minutes. An instantread meat thermometer inserted into the thickest part of a burger should
read at least 160 degrees F (70 degrees C).

The Last Word: Musings from the Upper Bar - Angela Williams
I am pleased to welcome both Dieter Hartmetz and Kim Laing to our Board of Directors. I’m also sad to say that Ursula Muirhead as asked for a leave of absence from the Board of Directors, which has been accepted. Uschi advises that she made
this request because the responsibilities of managing Innovations Catering, our Hall Rentals and the Program Committee were
getting to be too much for her to handle. She has graciously agreed to continue to manage our Hall Rentals function because
it is closely linked to the activities of her catering firm. I will be seeking a new Program Committee head, so that we can continue to plan and bring you a variety of events throughout the year. My thanks to Uschi for her work on the Board.
At our last Annual General Meeting, we discussed the reasons why people may not take out a membership in our organization—some have suggested that the word “Club” in our name gives people the impression that we are a member’s only facility,
and that non-members are not welcome to participate. As you all know, this is definitely not the case—there is a benefit to
membership (such as reduced rates on events; this magazine Das Echo, among other things) but non-members are always
welcome to attend. At the AGM, it was suggested that we prepare a survey of the members to get a sense of your thoughts
around how to modernise the German Canadian Cultural Society of Victoria. Is it time to change our name to reflect our
broader role in celebrating German Culture in Victoria? Is removing the word “club” enough or even necessary? I will prepare
this survey over the summer and have it ready for you to respond to in the fall. In the meantime, of course you are most welcome to share your thoughts with me on this issue. Our long term goal is to ensure that everyone who visits us feels welcome,
and that over time, our membership grows and we continue to have a solid membership base of support which allows us to
continue to be a viable organization. Stay tuned for more information on this subject in the coming months.
I was hoping to introduce you to our new caretakers in this edition of Das Echo. Some of you had met them when they started
on April 1st. Unfortunately after less than a month of making some significant and very visible changes on our site, they resigned. I was very happy with their enthusiasm and progress; our “home” was looking so much better! Unfortunately, they let
me know that through comments they received from various people associated with our organization, that they felt unappreciated, were unfairly criticised given how new they were, and in news that was astonishing to me, were left the impression by
these same people that the previous caretakers used to do a better job in some of the tasks they were assigned.
As President, I am accountable for how they were treated. I have apologised on behalf of the Board and our members. I consider their resignation a significant loss to our organization, and I will work with our Board to address the issues they raised
with me. They gave me some suggestions for improvement if we are so lucky to be able to recruit another team of this same
calibre.
This issue highlights for me that “we” all have opinions; and sometimes “we” feel it is quite appropriate to state those opinions
about the facility, its upkeep, our processes, events, rentals etc to whoever will listen, whether or not “we” have an official role
in the organization. These unfiltered comments and criticisms have led to confusion regarding who was responsible to provide
leadership and direction for our new employees, and has resulted in their resignation. When we hire new caretakers, I will do
my best to ensure this confusion is not repeated. I remind all members that if they have issues or concerns, please contact me
or any member of the Board. Discussing your issues or concerns with any other member of staff is not appropriate.
Regarding our previous caretakers—the apartment was left in a shambles. We have now removed everything from the unit
and will be renovating it completely. Unfortunately, this means we will have to dip into our line of credit to make it habitable
again. We have planned already to recruit specific trades people to perform some of the renovation work, but it would be exceedingly helpful if trades people within the membership would consider donating a few hours of their time to help us make the
apartment right again. We are in need of plumbing assistance in particular. Please contact me if you are willing to help.
