All about Valentine’s Day
Every year people celebrate Valentine’s Day on 14 February.
The day is named after Saint Valentine. But who is Saint Valentine?
This is the legend:
Valentine was a priest who lived 300 years A.C. in Rome. Emperor Claudius didn’t want
young men to get married because he wanted them to be good soldiers. But priest Valentine

married young men and women secretly.
When Claudius found out about this, he decided to kill him. He put
Valentine into prison. There, Valentine fell in love with the daughter
of a prison officer. Before he was killed, the priest sent a love letter
to the girl and signed it “Your Valentine”.
We’ll never know if the story is true. But because of this legend people write Valentine’s
cards. They often call them “valentines”. Some people just sign their card “from me”.
They don’t write their name because they think secrets are very romantic.
Red and pink are the favourite colours for Valentine’s Day. There are
some typical symbols, too: The heart and the red rose stand for love.
Valentine’s Day is a great day to celebrate our friends
and loved ones. Everybody writes Valentine’s cards.
Some people also give little presents, for example a
heart-shaped box of chocolates or a red rose.
School children decorate their classrooms
with red paper hearts.

How to make heart-shaped toast with strawberry jam:
1. Toast a slice of bread.
2. Take a biscuit cutter in the shape of a heart and make a heart-shaped toast!
3. When the bread is toasted, put some butter on it.
4. Put some strawberry jam on top.

Diese einfache Leseverstehensaufgabe animiert zur Nachahmung.
Die Schülerinnen und Schüler können ihren “loved ones” ein Überraschungsfrühstück bereiten.

Als spielerische Ergänzungen:
Heart Pricks
Die Lehrkraft zeichnet ein großes Herz an die Tafel, in die Mitte ein kleines weißes Herz. An
einem aus Fotokarton ausgeschnittenen Pfeil wird ein Magnetstreifen oder ein doppel­seitiges
Klebeband befestigt, sodass der Pfeil an der Tafel haften bleibt.
Einer Schülerin/einem Schüler werden die Augen verbunden und sie/er wird drei Mal im Kreis
gedreht bevor sie/er versucht, den Pfeil in dem kleinen weißen Herz zu platzieren.

Saint Valentine Says
Spielvariante von “Simple Simon Says”. Eine Schülerin/ein Schüler übernimmt die Rolle von
Saint Valentine und sagt: “Saint Valentine says clap your hands.” Die Kinder katschen in die
Hände. Auf Anweisungen ohne die Einleitung “Saint Valentine Says” dürfen die Kinder nicht
reagieren. Weitere Ideen für Anweisungen:
… touch your nose.
… shake hands with your neighbour.
… stand on one leg.
… hop on one foot.
… fold your hands on your back.
… cover your mouth with your hand.
… touch your heart.
… make a heart shape with your hands
(put thumbs and index fingers together).

What’s the time, Mr Valentine?
Dieses Spielvariente von “What’s the time, Mr Wolf?” kann auf dem Schulhof oder in der Turnhalle gespielt werden. Alle Kinder stehen an einem Ende des Spielfeldes, ein Kind (oder die Lehrkraft) – Mr Valentine – steht am gegenüberliegenden Ende. Die Kinder brüllen: “What’s the time,
Mr Valentine?” – Mr Valentine antwortet: “It’s three o’clock.” – Die Kinder gehen drei Schritte
nach vorne. Nach diesem Muster wird fortgefahren, bis die Kinder ganz nah an Mr Valentine sind.
Wenn dieser mit “It’s midnight” antwortet, laufen die Kinder davon. Das Kind, das von Mr Valentine
gefangen wird, ist der neue Mr Valentine.
