Welcome to TV3 Autumn 2013 / 2014
Welcome to
TV3 Autumn
2013 / 2014
One Introduction
Introduction
Over the past few years TV3 and
3e have been on an amazing
journey. The channels have
maintained strong editorial
identity against a plethora of UK
channels beaming in shows that
offer choice, but little relevance to
our audiences.
Jeff Ford
Director of Content, TV3 Group

Now is TV3’s chance to shine and deliver on our
mantra of ‘We entertain’. I aim to do this through a
balanced and fresh approach to programme making
coupled with a greater scale in production, through
the use of the Sony HD Studio, all complementing
our brand.
TV3 is already the home of major Saturday night
and Sunday night entertainment, with Ant and Dec’s
Saturday Night Takeaway, X Factor, The Cube,
Graham Norton, Dancing On Ice and Britain’s Got
Talent. I want to build on our reputation for family
entertainment and have already commissioned two
quiz shows for peak time in The Lie and Pressure
Point. Our most ambitious and largest studio piece
to date will be a six-part series starring the world
famous Keith Barry, filmed for Irish and international
audiences in the new TV3 Sony HD Studio.
These are big shows for big audiences. But it doesn’t
stop there. This year we have The Great Irish Bake Off
and Celebrity Apprentice. These two programming
juggernauts will run at the heart of the autumn
schedule and highlight the importance of quality in
our on-going productions.
The TV3 of autumn 2013/2014 will maintain many of
the qualities that have made our channels successful.
The darker side of our society will continue to be seen
in shows like the returning 24 Hours to Kill and new
series like Ireland’s Tiger Raids and Black Widows.
This autumn and in the future I will be commissioning
more home-produced shows and relying less on
acquired programmes. These shows will give an
honest, inclusive reflection of Irish society, shows
like Midwives, Ireland By Night, Travellers In America,
Save Your Money, Long Lost Family Ireland and Can’t
Move? Improve!
For a lot of families though, it can be difficult to
maintain optimism through the recession. I want to
give our audience a more uplifting experience.
I intend to build on TV3’s increasing reputation for
serious independent thinking documentaries. This
year TV3 will transmit series on Prison Families, Sinn
Féin, The Kennedys’ Irish Mafia and At Home with the
Healy Raes.
TV3’s sibling 3e is bigger than Sky 1, TG4 and
Channel 4, and bigger than over 200 digital channels.
It delivers a 15-34 audience in its own sharp and
unique way. This autumn and beyond, I will build on
the 3e brand with home produced exclusive content,
starting with Newsbag - an animated series created
by Brown Bag, the internationally renowned Irish
animation company.
The future for TV3 Group is bright: growing share of
audience, and producing major entertainment shows
with international reach. This year as our mantra
maintains, we plan to entertain... just a whole
lot more!

My Big Fat Gypsy Wedding offers a glimpse into the secretive, extravagant and

remarkable rituals, traditions and beliefs held by this minority group – telling the

Bottler is an animation and live-action production set in 1960’s Dublin. Brendan
Grace’s young Bottler character and his friends get involved in various adventures,
some of which are closely tied to real historical events of the time. In this series of
different stories told through the eyes of Bottler, viewers will be introduced to (or
reacquainted with) famous Dublin characters of the time such as the Rag & Bone

This fly on the wall documentary highlights the task in hand of working

duties. Observe as the newspaper editorial and production teams handle the
pressure of getting the publication ready to be delivered across the country;

Prison Families is a documentary series filmed over a six-month period following
the lives of four families as they cope with a family member’s imprisonment, which
often has detrimental consequences for everybody involved. Families say that
they themselves serve a sentence “as bad or worse” than the prisoner’s own. Each
individual or family story will be intercut to reveal family life as it buckles under the
huge strain caused by a relative’s imprisonment. Whether it’s a milkman racing to deliver produce or the road recovery
service rescuing stranded owners and their vehicles, there’s plenty of action
occurring after dark. While these people may lead ordinary lives, employed
in ordinary jobs, their journey through the night-shift can be somewhat extraordinary.

2 x 60 mins
8 X 60 mins
Ireland’s Tiger Raids explores a unique and brutal crime wave that,
incredibly, first appeared on Irish shores. Borrowed from the annals of IRA
warfare, and mirroring the predatory instincts of a tiger stalking its prey,
criminal gangs have shadowed, tracked, then kidnapped senior figures in
financial institutions across the country, before forcing them to hand over
millions. In this eye-opening two-part series we talk to the victims of this
calculated brand of crime and the family members who are inevitably caught
up in the cross-fire.
The compelling series 24 Hours to Kill returns for a fourth season with Dyane
Connor. The show examines a selection of Ireland’s most shocking murders, which
in turn produced some of the most recognised murder trials since the founding of
the State. In 24 Hours to Kill we rewind the clock to relive the hours leading up to
some of Ireland’s most brutal killings, which devastated families and shocked the
Irish public to the core. We retrace the steps of the killers and the movements of
the innocent victims, as we reveal how jealousy, desire, revenge and hatred pushed
them into committing such sinister murders. Some of the convicted murderers
investigated this season include Gary McCrea, David Bourke and Private Sean
Courtney.

he is given unheard-of access to this controversial community and their two

to the volatile relationship they share with the outside world, to the divisive
customs they fight so fiercely to protect, Travellers in America: A Secret

Challenging God with
Vincent Browne
6 x 60 mins
Challenging God with Vincent Browne explores the unproven beliefs that are
treated as factual by many religions and the extremes to which some followers have
taken them. Presented by TV3’s Vincent Browne, the programme will challenge the
assumptions of religions and the power of religious beliefs and myths.
With key witness testimony, new interviews and archive footage, GUBU will
provide a firsthand account of the events, which conspired against Ireland’s
most controversial political figure and his party colleagues. With interviews
over the course of the documentary from politician David Andrews, journalist
Peter Murtagh and former Senior Garda Tony Hickey.
Vincent argues over the course of the series a number of topics, from whether
the church is morally tainted by the recent sex scandals, to the role of the church
in the subjugation of women and the prejudice it engenders with regards to
homosexuality. The programme also asks if God has committed crimes against
humanity. If the Old Testament is to be believed, then it would seem that God
perpetrated and incited these crimes. Guests of the show include members of a
number of contrasting religious communities, historians, lecturers and atheists.

Sinn Féin’s transition from armed struggle to mainstream politics will be

How do they reconcile their recent history and what kind of people are
they? We meet them at home, in social settings and in the pursuit of political
power.

drama Wentworth is a modern adaptation of the iconic Prisoner: Cell Block H
series, which pushed the boundaries more than three decades ago.
Coronation Street continues this autumn with
potentially life-changing scenes for a number of
families on the Street. David’s slow burning vendetta

Finally, Gloria and Eva are stunned with revelations
surrounding Stella’s share in the Rovers Return.
Autumn 2013 will be full of action and revelation in
Emmerdale, as cover ups and deception begin to

Gennie’s accident and push Debbie for answers.
Will Cameron’s true colours be revealed about his

It was the beginning of a new German era last season as Munich and Dortmund

in the semis. It promises to be an exciting new season in Europe as new

world football. Once again this autumn, Tuesday nights promise to be tantalising
as the group stage of the UEFA Champions League returns. TV3 has the pick
of Tuesday’s big matches live, with highlights of the night’s other group games.
Manchester United will be looking to avenge last season’s controversial exit
in Fergie’s name, while Chelsea and their prodigal son José Mourinho will be
looking to build on last season’s UEFA Europa League success. Manchester City
and Arsenal will be looking to rebuild as they have continued to strengthen their
squads over the summer. Tommy Martin will be joined by a team of experts to
analyse the action over the course of the season.
The Road to Turin kicks off live on 3e this autumn with the group stage of the

“Lucky there’s a Family Guy!” The Griffins continue
their animated presence on TV3 this autumn, where
the surreal adventures of Peter and family are sure
to keep us entertained. Peter and his wife Lois have
three kids – the youngest being Stewie, a sadistic
baby obsessed with nuclear physics and world
domination. Chris, like his father, is obese, has a low
IQ and a serious lack of common sense. Meg (voice
of Mila Kunis) desperately tries to be noticed by her
family, but is always coldly forgotten. Their talking
dog Brian keeps baby Stewie in check, while Peter is

to Jimmy Pesto’s Pizzeria across the street. Bob
and his quirky family have big ideas about burgers,
condiments and sides – but only a few thoughts on
customer service. This season will see Bob substitute
as the home economics teacher at the kids’ school.
Linda goes to her high school reunion, the family will
attempt to create a local Super Bowl advertisement,
and the kids set up a trap for Santa Claus.
3e are delighted to be announcing the arrival of Irish produced Newsbag, a
new animated adult comedy series following Moss, Lenny and Gig, who all
work for ruthless news agency Newsbag, set in Dublin. The show follows the

something remarkable.

American Dad! follows the escapades of Stan
Smith, an extreme right-wing CIA agent dealing with
family life and keeping America safe, all in the most
irrational ways possible. Stan’s wife, Francine has an
unquestionable talent for turning a blind eye to Stan’s
brashness; his 18-year-old daughter Hayley has him
wrapped around her finger, while 14-year-old son, the
nerdy Steve, seems to be on the constant verge of
puberty but can’t quite make sense of the opposite
sex. Roger, the family pet alien often gets involved,
but resents the fact that he’s not allowed to leave
the house.
America’s finest comedy icon Conan O’Brien returns

late-night talk show. His captivating interviews,
cutting-edge comedy sketches and hilarious
