Die Dörfer Baelen und Membach am Rande des Hertogenwaldes und der Heckenlandschaft des Herver
Landes bieten den Anblick einer üppigen kontrastreichen Landschaft und eines ländlich geprägten, charaktervollen Wohnraumes an den Toren
zum Hohen Venn. Das architektonische Erbe von
Baelen wir dank der Kirche des Heiligen Paul und
ihres charakteristischen schraubenförmig gewunden Kirchturms (clocher tors genannt) besonders
aufgewertet. Die Kirche von Membach hingegen,
die Johannes dem Täufer geweiht ist, zeichnet sich
durch ihren Zwiebelturm aus. Die teilweise auf dem
Gebiet von Baelen-Membach gelegene GileppeTalsperre stellt unbestreitbar einen touristischen
Anziehungspunkt dar. Ihr 78 Meter hoher Aussichtsturm beherbergt ein Informationszentrum
mitsamt Restaurant und Brasserie von guter Qualität. Die Talsperre, der monumentale Löwe und
der Stausee ziehen zahlreiche Besucher (Touristen und Einheimische) an, die auf der Suche nach
Wanderungen, Ruhe und Naturerlebnis sind! Nicht
zu vergessen ist auch das fantastische Naturerbe
von Baelen-Membach. Die Landschaften können
anhand mehrerer ausgeschilderter Wanderwege
erkundet werden, die hübsche Weiler durchqueren
und erstklassige Aussichtspunkte bieten, oder aber
im Rahmen eines Besuches des Arboretums, zu Fuß
oder mit dem Fahrrad, alleine oder mit der ganzen
Familie!
At the gateway of the Fens,
between hedged farmlands
and forests
The villages of Baelen and Membach, tucked in
between the Hertogenwald and the hedged farmlands of Herve, gives an image of a rich and
contrasting countryside and farmhouses of character at the gateway to the Fens. The architectural heritage of Baelen is enhanced thanks to the
church of St Paul and its characteristic twisted spire.
At Membach is the church of St John the Baptist
with its remarkable domed tower. Partly in the community of Baelen-Membach, the Gileppe Dam is an
undeniable tourist attraction. Ist tower, with a panoramic view, is 78 metres high and houses an information centre and a good quality restaurant-brasserie. Today, the Gileppe Dam, its monumental lion
as well as its lake, attracts visitors (both tourists and
locals) who are looking for walks, peace and nature!
We must not forget to mention the superb natural
heritage of Baelen-Membach. Beautiful landscapes
can be discovered along signposted walks, passing
through pretty hamlets and offering magnificent
views, or in the natural park of the Arboretum. Go
(again) on foot or by bike, alone or in a family.

Mitten in Dison gibt die bemerkenswerte Skulptur
von Catherine Fourniau dem schönen Vorplatz der
Kirche Saint-Fiacre einen modernen Anstrich. Dieses
Werk aus rosafarbenem Granit und Bronze trägt
die Bezeichnung «L’envol» und steht als Symbol für
Frieden, Harmonie und Freiheit.
Aber Dison ist auch der Geburtsort des berühmten
Dichters Adolphe Hardy, der von der Académie
Française ausgezeichnet wurde. Sein Geburtshaus
– heute eine Museumsstiftung – steht Ihnen offen
und bringt Ihnen das Leben des Dichters anhand
verschiedener Gemälde, Souvenirs und Familienerbstücke näher. Ein bewegender Besuch, der
von Zeit zu Zeit um Wechselausstellungen ergänzt
wird. Zahlreiche Wanderwege gestatten Touristen
wie Einheimischen, die Naturschätze und herrlichen
Landschaften der Dörfer Andrimont, Dison und
Mont-Dison zu bewundern. Die Ruhe in Letzterem
wird nur durch den volkstümlichen Überschwang
des Karnevals durcheinander gebracht, der jährlich am dritten Samstag im Januar stattfindet. Eine
Gemeinde, die Sie gewiss verzaubern wird, insbesondere während des Festes der Musik, das sich im
Laufe der Zeit zu einem besonders wichtigen Ereignis für Dison entwickelt hat.
Between town and Countryside
In the heart of Dison, the remarkable sculpture of
Catherine Fourniau modernises the pretty square
of the church of Saint-Fiacre. Entitled «Taking off»,
this creation of pink granite and bronze symbolises
peace, harmony and freedom. But Dison is also the
birthplace of the famous poet Adolphe Hardy, honoured by the French Academy. Transformed into a
museum-foundation, the house where he was born
opens its doors to show you the life of the poet
through various paintings, memories and familiar
objects. A moving visit is enhanced by temporary
exhibitions. Numerous walks allow tourists and locals to admire the natural resources and the superb
landscapes around the villages of Andrimont, Dison
and Mont-Dison; the peace of the latter only disturbed by the enthusiastic celebration of its carnival
held on the third Saturday in January. A community
not to be missed.

Limbourg liegt in der Nähe der Gileppe-Talsperre
und des Hertogenwald und ist als ehemals befestigte Stadt für Besucher besonders attraktiv. Wer
die Place Saint-Georges betritt, die inzwischen
als bedeutendes Erbe der Wallonie unter Denkmalschutz steht, ist von der Atmosphäre des 18.
Jahrhunderts ebenso verzaubert wie von den malerischen Gässchen und dem mit Kieseln aus derWeser gepflasterten Platz. Am Weg entlang der alten
Stadtmauer liegt die gotische Kirche des Heiligen
Georg aus dem 15. Jahrhundert, die derzeit restauriert wird. Von ihr aus genießt man eine großartige
Aussicht auf das Wesertal, die Hochebene von Herve
und die Dörfer Bilstain, Dolhain, Goé und Hévremont. Das alte Rathaus, «Arvô» genannt, steht den
Touristen offen. Im Erdgeschoss befinden sich ein
historischer Saal und ein Modell von Limbourg im
Jahr 1632. Außerdem finden von Mai bis September
im ersten Stock fantastische Ausstellungen plastischer Kunstwerke statt. Limbourg, das sind aber
auch kleine, schön restaurierte Häuser mit üppigem
Blumenschmuck und ausgeschilderte und markierte Wanderwege, auf denen der Besucher die
benachbarten Weiler entdecken kann. Eine einzigartige Stadt – warten Sie nicht mit einem Besuch!
A town
to put in a Museum
Close to the Gileppe Dam and the Hertogenwald,
Limbourg satisfies the curious visitor with its planning as an ancient fortified place. On arriving in the
Saint Georges Square, classified as a major heritage
site of Wallonia, you will be infatuated by the atmosphere of the 18th century and also by the picturesque streets and the square of cobbles taken
from the river Vesdre. The Saint Georges church in
the gothic style of the 15th century (currently being
restored) adds interest to the walk that passes
alongside the ramparts and gives magnificent views
over the valley of the river Vesdre, the Herve plateau and the villages of Bilstain, Dolhain, Goé and
Hévremont. The old Town Hall, called «Arvô», welcomes the tourist and presents on the ground floor
a historic room and a model of Limbourg in 1632 as
well as superb art exhibitions (from May to September) on the first floor. The town of Limbourg is also
its little well restored houses adorned with flowers
and its signposted and marked walks that allow the
visitor to discover the neighbouring hamlets. A
unique town, to visit without delay.

Pepinster am Rande des Wesertals ist eine hübsche
kleine, von zahlreichen Obstgärten umgebene
Stadt, in der es sich gut spazieren gehen lässt. Die
Kirche Saint-Antoine l’Ermite ist einen Umweg wert,
denn sie stellt das einzige Zeugnis eines neogotischen Sakralbaus in Wallonien dar. Aber Pepinster
genießt auch den Vorzug, eines der «schönsten
Dörfer Walloniens» zu besitzen: Soiron.
Das von seinem großartigen Schloss beherrschte
charmante Dorf ist umgeben von Hügeln, Wiesen
und Obstgärten – eine wahre grüne Oase der Ruhe!
Dank seiner Schlösser und zahlreicher stilvoller
Gebäude verfügt Soiron über ein bemerkenswertes
architektonisches Erbe. Mit seiner Trockenscheune
für Disteln, dem öffentlichen Waschhaus und den
alten Häusern rund um die imposante, für ihre
Skulpturen bekannte Kirche Saint-Roch scheint in
Soiron die Zeit stehen geblieben zu sein. Neben
seinen köstlichen Torten bietet Tancrémont noch
die zweifache Attraktion einer Festung aus dem 2.
Weltkrieg und einer hübschen Kapelle, die viele Pilger anzieht. Pepinster, ein Ort, den Sie unbedingt
entdecken sollten!
Up hill and down dale… between
Soiron and Tancrémont
Tucked into the valley of the river Vesdre, Pepinster is a pretty little town surrounded by numerous
orchards crossed by very nice walks. The church
of St Anthony the Hermit is worth a detour as it is
the only real testimony to the religious neo-gothic
style in Wallonia. But the community of Pepinster
has also the privilege to include Soiron, one of the
«Most Beautiful Villages in Wallonia». Dominated by
its magnificent castle, this charming village is surrounded by hills, meadows and orchards... A true
green case of nature and peace! The manors and
the many houses of character give Soiron a remarkable architectural heritage. This village appears like
a retreat from modern times with its thistle dryer,
its public laundry and its old houses around the imposing church of Saint Roch (known for its magnificent sculptures). Tancrémont, well known for its
succulent pies, has also the double attraction of its
Second World War fort and its pretty chapel attracting many pilgrims. Pepinster, definitely a place to
discover!

Verviers, die wallonische Hauptstadt des Wassers, liegt im Herzen der so genannten Blauen
Ardennen. Sie verfügt über eine industrielle Vergangenheit, in der das «weiche Gold» (Wolle) eng
mit dem «blauen Gold» (Wasser) zusammenhängt.
Verviers hat eine lange Geschichte, die vor einigen
Jahrhunderten begann, als die Qualität des Weserwassers zusammen mit dem Können der örtlichen Handwerker die Wolle unvergleichlich weich
machte. Diese Tochter der Weser wird heute auch
als Stadt des Wassers bezeichnet, nicht zuletzt
aufgrund ihres neuen Brunnenrundwegs. Ein
wahrhaft prickelnder Spaziergang für die Kleinen
wie für die Großen! Aber Verviers, das sind auch
zahlreiche touristische Attraktionen. Das Touristische Zentrum für Wolle und Mode (Centre Touristique de la Laine et de la Mode) und das Haus
des Wassers in der Maison de Bonvoisin sind Teil
dieser Sehenswürdigkeiten, ebenso wie das Museum der Schönen Künste und der Keramik sowie
das Museum für Archäologie und Folklore... Mit
einem höchst interessanten Kulturerbe ausgestattet, besitzt die Stadt Verviers ein neues, dynamisches und attraktives Gesicht. Die Konzerte im
Spirit of 66, die Aufführungen im Grand Théâtre
und im Espace Duesberg sowie die vielen festlichen Veranstaltungen im Stadtzentrum und seiner Umgebung (FiestaCity, Les Chocolateries, der
große Trödelmarkt am Ostermontag usw.) sind immer wieder ein Publikumsmagnet. Touristen und
Einwohner staunen gleichermaßen über die Anzahl bekannter Persönlichkeiten, die eine Verbindung zur Stadt der Wolle haben: von den Brüdern
Taloche bis Steve Houben, über Henri Vieuxtemps,
René Hausman, Jean Vallée oder Pierre Rapsat …
was für ein schönes internationales Image für Verviers! Verviers verdient aus mehr als einem Grund
einen Besuch!
From soft gold to blue gold
At the heart of the Blue Ardenne, Verviers, the Water
capital of Wallonia, has an industrial past intimately
linking soft gold (wool) and blue gold (water). A
long history began here some centuries ago when
the quality of the water of the river Vesdre, linked
with the know-how of the craftsmen of Verviers,
gave the wool a unique feel. Daughter of the Vesdre,
Verviers today has a modern status of «water town»
thanks to its new «Tour of the Fountains». A more
than sparkling tour for young and old! But Verviers is
also characterised by its many tourist attractions. The
Wool Tourist Centre and the House of Water (Maison
de Bonvoisin) form part of this touristic heritage
without forgetting the Museum of Fine Arts and
Ceramics as well as the Museum of Archaeology and
Folklore...
All this provides a cultural heritage that merits further interest: the town of Verviers now has a new
dynamic and attractive face. The concerts of the Spirit of 66, the shows in the Grand Theatre and at the
Duesberg Centre, the numerous festive events that
liven-up the town centre and its surroundings (Fiesta
City, the Chocolate Factories, the big second hand
market on Easter Monday) never stop bringing in lots
of people. Tourists and locals are equally surprised by
the number of personalities linked to the wool town:
from the Taloche Brothers to Steve Houben, and
including Henri Vieuxtemps, René Hausman, Jean
Vallée and Pierre Rapsat… What a nice international
image for Verviers! For so many reasons, Verviers is
worth a long visit.

Das Touristische Zentrum für Wolle vereint mehrere
Themenbereiche unter einem Dach: mehrere Säle für
Wechselausstellungen, einen großen Seminarraum, ein
Dokumentationszentrum zum Thema Wolle und einen
attraktiven Multimedia-Rundgang. Letzterer klärt über
alle Aspekte der Wolle auf und lässt Kleine wie Große
anhand eines persönlichen Audioführers (in mehreren
Sprachen erhältlich) alle Fertigungsschritte bis zum
Wolltuch während der glorreichen Zeit der Wollindustrie in Verviers entdecken. Lässt sich genauso gut
alleine wie mit der Familie entdecken…!

same roof a number of different interests: temporary exhibitions, seminar room, documentation centre
for the wool industry and an attractive tourshow
about wool, for young and less young alike, to discover the different stages in making woollen material
during the glorious era of the Verviers wool industry.

Das Museum der Schönen Künste und der Keramik
beherbergt eine Keramiksammlung, die nach Umfang,
Qualität und Vielfalt ihrer Stücke zu den schönsten Belgiens gehört. Unter den Titeln "Chine de commande"
(«Aus China auf Bestellung») und «Compagnie des
Indes» («Indien-Kompanie») werden Stücke vorgestellt,
die im 17. und 18. Jahrhundert nach Europa importiert
wurden. Fayencen und Steingut sind mit blauer und
polychromer Ware aus Delft bestens vertreten. Zum
Abschluss dieses künstlerischen Ausflugs taucht der
Besucher in eine völlig andere Atmosphäre europäischer und zeitgenössischer Gemälde ein.

Dieses interaktive und dynamische Informationszentrum über Wasser hat seinen Sitz in der
alten Bonvoisin-Tuchfabrik. Mithilfe ausgeklügelter akustischer und visueller Multimediatechniken
tauchen die Besucher in eine vielseitige Wasserwelt
ein: Von der Gileppe-Talsperre bis zur Weser, vom Regenwasser bis zum Trinkwasser in der Flasche – das
«blaue Gold» wird in allen seinen Facetten vorgestellt.

House of Water is both interactive and dynamic.
By means of sophisticated multimedia equipment,
from sound to vision, the visitors dive into a varied
aquatic universe; from the Gileppe Dam to the River
Vesdre, from rainwater to bottled water …. Discover

The Museum of Fine Arts and Ceramics houses
one of the most beautiful collection of ceramics in Belgium in terms of the number, quality and variety of its
pieces. Various «Chine de commande» and «Compagnie
des Indes» show important pieces from Europe of the
17th and 18th centuries. Earthenware and stoneware
in the basement are well represented thanks to the
blue Delft and polychrome Delft. To end this artistic
journey, the visitor dives into a different atmosphere –
that of European paintings and contemporary art.

Das charmante Museum für Archäologie und Folklore, ist in einem sehenswerten Patrizierhaus im LouisXV-Stil untergebracht. Einrichtungen des 17., 18. und 19.
Jahrhunderts sind nach Epochen zusammengefasst und
machen dieses Bürgerhaus sehr lebendig. Liebhaber von
Spitze sollten unbedingt die bemerkenswerte Sammlung
belgischer, italienischer und französischer Spitze (wieder)
entdecken, die im zweiten Stock ausgestellt ist. Das Untergeschoss dieses denkmalgeschützten Hauses wird jedes
Jahr zur Weihnachtszeit geöffnet, um das «Bethlehem
von Verviers» auferstehen zu lassen, zur großen Freude
von klein und groß.

The Museum of Archaeology and Folklore is a
charming museum located in a superb house in the
style of Louis XV. The furniture collections of the
17th, 18th and 19th centuries are arranged accordingly to make this middle class house come alive. Fans
of lace should not hesitate to come and discover (or
rediscover) the remarkable collections of Belgian,
Italian and French lace on exhibition on the second
floor. The basement of the listed building is completely open during Christmas to recreate the «Verviers
Bethlehem».

eine Museumsstiftung umgewandelt und ist seit mehr
als 20 Jahren für die Öffentlichkeit zugänglich. Es bringt
den Besuchern das Leben des Poeten anhand verschiedener Gemälde, Souvenirs und Familienstücke näher. Eine
bewegende Besichtigung, die von Zeit zu Zeit um Wechselausstellungen ergänzt wird.
Born at Dison in 1868, Adolphe Hardy is famous for
his brilliant literary career. He has been rewarded by
the French Academy with the «Grand Prix de Langue
Française». Adolphe Hardy was the first Belgian author to receive this precious distinction for his anthology of poems «Le cortège des mois» (The Procession
of Months). Transformed into a museum-foundation, the house of his birth has opened its doors to
visitors for more than 20 years and shows the life
of the poet through paintings, memories and family
objects. A moving visit augmented from time to time
by various temporary exhibitions.

Etwa 50 lebensgroße Puppen stellen den Besuchern des Historischen Museums von Ensival die
Besetzung und Befreiung der Region von Verviers
vor. Zahlreiche Materialien wie Fotos und Unterlagen sind ausgestellt. Außerdem ist ein archäologisches Zentrum zu sehen. Ein Teil des Museums
ist ausschließlich den Veteranen der Einheit «314
TCG 50 SQ» der US Air Force gewidmet. Auf Anfrage
sind Besuche für Gruppen täglich möglich. Sie sind
kostenlos und der Museumskonservator führt die
Besucher voller Freude und Leidenschaft umher.
More than 50 models, representing the occupation
and liberation of the Verviers region, are on public
display in the History Museum at Ensival. Exhibits
include numerous photos and documents as well as
an Archaeological Centre. One part of the museum is
entirely devoted to the WW2 veterans of «314 TCG 50
SQ» -US Air Force. Visits, possible everyday on reservation for groups, are free but it is with pleasure and
enthusiasm that the curator will accompany you.

135 g Reis,
185 g Zucker,
(Zimt oder Vanille).
1 litre of milk,
135 grams of rice,
185 grams of sugar,
cinnamon or vanilla.
Milch aufkochen. Geben Sie den Reis in die kochende
Milch und lassen Sie ihn unter häufigem Umrühren
eine Stunde lang kochen. Zucker hinzufügen und
weitere 30 Minuten kochen. In eine Schüssel geben.
Am nächsten Tag 1 Ei hinzufügen, vermischt und
dann in eine Backform geben und 25 Minuten im
heißen Backofen backen.

1 kg of rich bread dough,
yeast,
150 grams of butter,
1 egg,
400 grams of Belgian pearl sugar.
Nehmen Sie normalen Brotteig und fügen Sie die
Hefe hinzu, damit er schneller als ein herkömmlicher Brotteig aufgeht. Weiche Butter, das Ei und
den Zucker hinzufügt und gut vermischen. Lassen
Sie den Teig 45 Minuten gehen und geben Sie ihn

Seigneurie de la Vèrvî-Riz
1990 wurde die gastronomische Bruderschaft «Seigneurie de la Vèrvî-Riz» gegründet. Ihre treuen
Mitglieder widmen ihre Zeit und ihre Begeisterung
der Aufgabe, die Bekanntheit dieses noblen und
altüberlieferten Regionalprodukts, so wie das Image
der Stadt Verviers bei zahlreichen Veranstaltungen zu
erhöhen. Die Devise der Bruderschaft lautet: «Jamais
pour me nourrir, toujours pour le plaisir, Magnans,
Frés, fât qu’on rêye, avoû noss blanke Dorêye» «Niemals als Nahrung, immer aus Vergnügen. Lasst
uns essen, Brüder, und lasst uns lachen, mit unserer
Reistorte.»
The Vèrvî-Riz Lordship
The Vèrvi-riz Lordship was created in 1990 as a
true gastronomic brotherhood of the rice tart. All
the members defend and promote this noble and
ancient product and is a showcase for the town of
Verviers at numerous events. The motto of the Lordship is : «never just to eat, always for the pleasure.
Magnans, Frés, Fat qu’on rêye (Lets eat, brothers,
lets have fun) avoû noss blanke Dorêye (with our rice
tart)».

Confrérie Sainte-Apolline
Seit über 200 Jahren betet man in Pepinster zur Heiligen Apollonia, um sich vor Zahnschmerzen zu schützen. Sie ist die zweite Schutzpatronin der Pfarre. Ihr
zu Ehren wurde im Jahre 1813 eine Gesellschaft ins
Leben gerufen, die sich "Bruderschaft der Heiligen
Apollonia" nannte. Seit einigen Jahren lädt die Bruderschaft die Einwohner der Ortschaft jeweils um
den 9. Februar zu einem feierlichen Hochamt in die
St.-Antonius-und-Apollonia-Pfarrkirche von Pepinster ein, bei dem, einer alten Tradition folgend, Waffeln gesegnet werden. Sie sollen Glück bringen.

of Tchèveneye
The Brotherhood of the Knights of Tchèveneye was
founded in September 1965. For those who do not
know, it is a gastronomic-folkloric brotherhood in
honour of fricassee eggs and streaky bacon to which
it dedicates a whole weekend in tz December.
People have been praying to Saint Apolline in Pepinster for two hundred years to guard against
toothache. She is the secondary patron saint of the
parish and to honour this saint, in 1813, a society was
created and named "the Brotherhood of Sainte-Apolline”. In accordance with tradition, for the last several
years, the Brotherhood of Sainte-Apolline invites inhabitants to the solemn mass (around 9th February)
in the Church of Sainte-Antoine and Sainte-Apolline
in Pepinster, for the blessing of the "lucky” waffles.
