Stitched & Patched
Denim Bag
By Marta Alto
Here’s a great way to combine
embroidery practice stitchouts with an old
pair of jeans to create something totally new
and fun. Trendy bamboo handles add the
finishing touch.

handles
MATERIALS
• Discarded jeans for bag
• ⁄ yard cotton duck for bag
interlining
• 1⁄2 yard cotton print for lining,
pockets and patches
• Assorted fabric scraps with
embroidery or sample stitchouts
from other projects
• 1⁄2 yard lightweight fusible
knit interfacing
• 1 set of bamboo handles
(6-inch diameter)
• Embroidery machine
• Embroidery designs
• Embroidery and bobbin thread
• Embroidery stabilizer appropriate
for the selected fabrics
• 2 (11 x 13-inch) pieces of tissue
paper or pattern tracing cloth
• All-purpose thread to match fabrics
Note: e embroidery designs on this
bag include a butterfly from Zundt Design,
Pissaro 08 (www.zundtdesign.com)
and the letters, bamboo and flowers
from Hatched in Africa “Taste of
Japan” (www.hatchedinafrica.com).
Visit their Web sites to order these and
other designs in the appropriate format
for your embroidery machine.
Cutting
• From the cotton duck, cotton print
and fusible interfacing, cut two 11 x
13-inch rectangles each.
• From the cotton print and the
fusible interfacing, cut two 5 x 6-inch
rectangles each for the pockets and
pocket linings.
• From the jeans, cut a section with
the zipper and waistband for the
bag front (see photo). For the bag
back, cut a section of the jeans with
a portion of the back waistband (see
photo). For the handle loops, cut
one 2 x 18-inch strip from the jeans
or other selected fabric. Cut two
pieces of denim from the jeans legs,
cutting them large enough to hoop
for embroidery.
• Cut additional fabric pieces to hoop
for other desired embroideries.
Assembly
All seam allowances are 1⁄4-inch wide
unless otherwise indicated.
1. Complete the desired embroideries
on the chosen fabrics. For ease in
embroidering the denim without
hooping it, hoop sticky-back stabilizer
and smooth the denim in place on the

Add a Pocket
On the sample shown,
embroidery was done through the small
pocket and the layers underneath. It
still unbuttons and there’s room inside
for a lipstick or loose change. If your
jeans don’t have a front pocket, you can
make your own from fabric from one
of the legs or salvage a pocket or other
interesting detail from the back of
the jeans.

Snip-It
Cut It Out!
If you are using a
section of the jeans with the zipper
under the fly, carefully cut the zipper
out to eliminate excess thickness in the
side seam and on the front of the bag.
Topstitch the fly edge in place.
stabilizer before attaching the hoop to
the machine.
2. Referring to the photos for
placement ideas, decide on the crazy
patch layout for the front and back of
your bag and draw the arrangements
on the 11 x 13-inch rectangles. Trim
each piece to the appropriate size,
allowing for extra fabric where the
pieces overlap.
3. Turn under and press the allowance
on interior edges at the overlaps. Pin
in place and then edgestitch in place.
Use contrasting and matching thread
and built-in decorative stitches. At
the upper edge of the jeans waistband
sections, topstitch in place on top of
previous stitching using a thread that
matches the stitches.
4. With right sides facing, sew the
patched bag front and back together
along the sides and lower edges. Turn
right side out.
5. Turn under and press 1⁄4 inch along
both long edges of the 2 x 18-inch
handle strip. Fold the strip in half
lengthwise with wrong sides together
and stitch along both long edges. Cut
four 4-inch-long pieces from the
strip. Fold each loop in half through
the handle loops and sew the short
ends together.
6. Center a handle on the front and
back at the upper edges with 1⁄4 inch
of the loop edges extending above
the upper edge of the bag. Baste
in place.
7. Apply fusible interfacing to the
wrong side of each large and small
rectangle of cotton print. Turn under
and press 1⁄4 inch on the side and
bottom edges of each small rectangle.
Turn under and press a 1⁄4inch
wide double hem at the upper
edge. Stitch.
8. Position a pocket on each large
rectangle with the upper edge of the
pocket 4 inches from the upper
11-inch edge. Stitch in place along
side and bottom edges.
9. With right sides together, stitch the
lining pieces together along the sides
and bottom edges, leaving a 7-inch
long opening in the lower edge for
turning; handles must fit through
this opening.
10. Box the bottom corners of the
lining and the patchwork bag as shown
in Figure 1.

handles inside the lining with right

upper edge. Turn the bag right side out
through the opening in the bottom
edge of the lining.
12. Turn the opening edges in and
press, then edgestitch them together to
close the opening.
13. Stitch close to the upper finished
edge of the bag to keep the lining from
rolling to the outside and showing. 
