The Volvo D13A520 is a 520 hp, 12.8 litre in-line 6-cylinder engine with an overhead camshaft, 4 valves per
cylinder and unit injectors. The engine meets Euro 3 exhaust emission regulations. It is designed to ensure
excellent driving characteristics, high reliability and excellent fuel efficiency. The timing gear is located at the rear
of the engine, which reduces vibration. With a cylinder block and cylinder head made of cast iron, a strong base is
created for a dependable engine.
The Volvo D13A520 engine offers a steady flow of power uphill and massive braking power downhill and evens
out the gradients. The engine’s power is available virtually from idling speed, which ensures excellent starting
traction. This power stays with you throughout and maximum torque is available high upto the rev range (2500 Nm
at 1050-1450 rpm). A wide economic speed range of 1050-1600 rpm helps to get the maximum fuel efficiency.

A strong engine foundation is formed
by a cylinder block and a cylinder
head made of cast iron. The lower
part of the cylinder block has a
steel reinforced ladder frame – this
minimises vibration and increases
rigidity. The timing gear is located at
the rear of the engine which reduces
the number of components.

Fully synchronised manual gearbox
You’ll have to look hard for a gearbox that is faster and easier to use. Servo synchromesh and cable linkage
mean a vibration-free gear lever and slick gear changes. The wide ratio span gives high starting traction while
simultaneously ensuring that there are ample resources for high average speeds.
The new Volvo FMX 26.1 Cu.m Dump Truck is fitted with fully synchronised 14-speed splitter-range gearbox
VT2514B, matched perfectly to the fitted D13A520 engine’s characteristics. Close and well balanced ratios make
it easy for the truck to climb steep gradients and facilitate smooth acceleration. Extreme low crawler ratio 16.41:1
ensures good startability when hauling heavy loads in difficult driving conditions.

Cable link gear-changing.
The VT2514B is equipped with a newly
developed shift by cable which results in
short, distinct gear lever movements. The
gear lever is completely free of vibration,
which contributes to comfortable operation
and a lower noise level in the cab. The
gearbox also has patented synchronisation
which, with the assistance of a mechanical
servo function, provides extra power at the
moment of synchronisation. The torque
that arises when the synchronisation starts
to slow down the rotation is converted to
an axial force which gives the driver servo
assistance. This design solution contributes
to low gear-shifting forces and increased
driver productivity.
Robustly dimensioned
components.
New high performance
transmission oil cooler.
All shafts, bearings and gears are robustly
dimensioned for high reliability and long
service life. All the gears are made of
special steel that has been case-hardened
to give high strength. The gears in the
basic unit are bevel gears, which mean that
several gears can be in mesh with each
other at the same time. This results in quiet
operation and high reliability.
The gears on the input, main and
reversing shafts are journalled with double
needle bearings, with bearing holders in
steel, which give low friction. All the shafts
and planetary gears in the range-change
gearbox are journalled in roller bearings,
with the exception of the low-loaded output
shaft which is journalled in a ball bearing.
New oil cooler is based on air cooling of
the agent that cools the transmission fluid.
The system consists of a separate radiator
at the front of the vehicle that is
series-connected to the engine’s cooling
system, and a heat exchanger attached to
the gearbox. The coolant is cooled in the
front-mounted radiator before it reaches
the heat exchanger where the transmission
oil is circulating. In this way, oil temperature
is lowered very effectively, giving the
gearbox considerable operating reliability.

Tandem drive offers excellent traction
and superb pulling power. The result is
excellent get-you-there ability and low tyre
wear. The reduction at hubs takes places
at 4 planetary gears, giving more uniform
and steady load distribution, resulting in
higher truck vehicle availability.
Electronic-hydraulic steering mechanism
improves drivability with increased
manoeuvrability and reduces tyre wear.
The steering angle is based on wheelbase
and vehicle speed, while a potentiometer
reads the position of the front axle;
the ECU calculates the corresponding
theoretical steering angle of the tag axle.
Solenoid activated hydraulic valves steer
the tag axle to its calculated position.

The chassis frame is made from highstrength steel. Its front section is bent
outwards to accommodate the cab
and engine, and has the same material
thickness (8 mm) in the web and the
flanges. Frame is reinforced with 5 mm
thick inner liner, made from high strength
steel, which runs from the front of frame
to end of frame.

Reinforced cab, engine, transmission
and chassis cross member provide extra

12-24 cross-ply (20 ply rating) mining
tyres ensure better footprint of the vehicle
in rough mining roads, while carrying
heavy loads. It also helps in improving
the ground clearance of the vehicle, to
ensure unhindered operation in off-road
applications.

The new Volvo FMX 520 26.1 Cu.m Dump Truck offers a large dump body of 26.1 Cu.m struck volume
capacity. The body is made of thick wear resistant steel on floor, sides and head board, suitable for mineral
overburden application. 10 degree scow is provided at the end for better material flowability during
tipping. The high capacity body enables the customer to get higher productivity without compromising on
operational efficiency.

Rugged design for high
durability
The Volvo FMX has been designed as a highly robust and durable piece of equipment. The front towing member, is one
piece of cast iron and is strong enough to hold up to 32 tonnes with its tow hook. The corner bumpers are made out
of three-millimetre thick high grade steel. With its new box-like construction, the front becomes incredibly sturdy. So it
absorbs the energy of a low speed impact like a giant spring.
There is nothing hanging down underneath the truck except wheels. The new headlights are positioned higher
up where they are less likely to get damaged and best kept. Body panels are split rather than overlapping so that
any cosmetic damage is isolated.
And if you do manage to do any serious damage to the front, you’ll probably be able to replace the part yourself as
the screws are all visible and easily accessible. We’re pretty sure this is going to be popular with customers as it
offers savings and increases uptime.

The sturdy bumper.
Push and pull 32 tonnes.
It’s made of 3 mm thick high grade steel, it’s
in three parts and the attachments are visible
and easy to undo. The corner bumpers
now have the same exposed fasteners for
easier replacement. The steel bumper is also
covered by a thick polypropylene coat that
largely regains its form if damaged.
The towing member is one piece of cast iron.
It’s strong enough to hold upto
32 tonnes with its tow hook. And the fact
that the towing member is exposed means,
you can use it like a ladder to climb up
the front. Wherever you step you’ll find it’s
solid, nothing is going to break or crack. A
handle opens so that the towing pin can be
accessed when needed.

Robust rear-view mirrors with sturdy
mountings withstand rough treatment, thus
also giving a steady image in the mirror.
Four point engine mounting optimised to
reduce road induced vibrations and improve
road handling. Rear engine mounting with
more rubber increases insulation, improves
ride comfort and durability. Front engine
anchorages made of aluminium instead of
cast iron in order to save weight.
Four point coil suspension with shock
absorbers with vertical stroke of + / - 50 mm
to reduce the risk of bottoming out even in
the worst road conditions.
The attachments of the lights are sturdy
enough to safeguard the lamp bulbs from
vibrations and keep the lamp bodies in
place, even if you happen to bump into
something. A new headlight protection mesh
protects the headlight from stone chipping,
while keeping the illumination unaffected.
Unique front suspension
geometry.
New front parabolic leaf suspension’s
unique design ensures that the leaves lie
flush with each other only in the middle
and at the ends. This ensures that friction
between leaves is very low, thus giving a
smooth and comfortable ride without any
bumps.
The spring leaves are made from special
steel and are dimensioned so that the
load is evenly distributed over each crosssection of the leaf. Front shock absorbers
contribute to the less vibration of chassis.
Front stabiliser ensures better torsional
rigidity during turning of the vehicle at
speed.
Reinforced bogie structure.
Inverted bogie suspension design provides
equal load distribution between both rearforward and rear-rearward axles. Rubberjournalled V-stays and reaction rods provide
better distribution of torsional load to the
chassis.
Rubber springs between the spring leaves
and axle, and two shock absorbers for the
front driven axle contribute to less vibration
of chassis and good comfort under all axle
loads. Rear stabiliser provides torsional
rigidity to the chassis under rough terrain.
Rear bogie suspension is reinforced to
better withstand high loads under tough
conditions.
Electronically controlled
hydraulic-pneumatic suspension.
The system is designed for mining
operation and combines efficient load
distribution over three rear axles, high
stability and optimised traction. Hydraulicpneumatic suspension optimises
compensation between the left hand and
the right hand side of the chassis. The
suspension cylinders can be locked by
means of a switch controlled by the driver,
to achieve maximum tipping-stability. To
improve traction on slippery soil, a traction
improvement function is available to
transfer load from the tag axle to the leafsuspended driven rear axles, for a limited
time.

Despite being a tough truck, everything inside the cab feels inviting. Sitting in the comfortable driver seat, the
first thing that strikes you is the clean design – the dash, steering wheel and instrument cluster. The gently
curved dash not only looks appealing; it’s also designed for an ergonomic and comfortable driving position with all
buttons, instruments and storage within easy reach.
The instrument cluster puts vital information where the driver can see it at a glance, while the less frequently
used controls are further away. The sleek steering column design allows comfortable leg space for the driver to
wriggle around.
Raven is the colour of the dashboard. It is especially developed for the mining and construction environment,
because this colour is less sensitive to dirt.

are provided on steering for direction
indicators, main beam, windscreen wiping
& washing and exhaust brake operation.

Steering column has been made sleek in
design to provide more knee space for the
driver, bringing more comfort while driving.
The steering lock mechanism is combined
with vehicle ignition electrical switch on
the dashboard.
The driver seat has a well-shaped seat
cushion and backrest. Thanks to its
advanced ergonomic design, the driver gets
perfect support and seating comfort. Airsuspended seat variant provides even better
comfort by offering automatic adjustment to
the weight of the driver and wide variety of
fore-aft adjustments.

and exterior of the cab for keeping
personal belongings, like dash panel
center section storage, panel top tray etc.
Extra storage space is also provided on
the cab exterior on both the driver and

The parking brake activation is through
an easy access electrical switch on the
dashboard. Automatically engaged at
key-off, and automatically released when
taking off.

Electrical switches for climate control allow
the system to remember the settings made
in the climate control system when the
truck is switched off. When the truck starts

Dynafleet is Volvo Trucks Online Transport Information System for improved profitability. Customers can see in
real time their vehicles’ performance data that is critical, to have control on their fleet. In addition, Dynafleet shows
the areas of improvement to support profitability in the long run. By providing clear and accurate information, the
system makes it easier to take the right decisions. And customers can access this information anywhere, also
outside the office, from any standard PC and device with an internet connection.
The Volvo FMX 26.1 Cu.m Dump Truck comes enabled for Dynafleet Online service of ‘Fuel & Environment’.
The Fuel & Environment service saves customers time and effort in analysing vehicle data and helps find ways to
cut fuel cost. Customer simply has to sign-up for the service and stay connected by paying the monthly / annual
subscription fee.

the vehicles’ performance. It also saves you time and effort analysing vehicle data

Safe as Volvo
Safety in trucks means prevention of hazardous
incidents and reduction of any damage and trauma
that may occur. This means taking into account
the protection of the driver, passenger, cargo and
all road users in traffic. Safety is as always a Volvo
hallmark, Volvo is safer than other trucks. Yet, more
safety features have been added.
Toughest tests in the world.
Volvo is the only truck manufacturer in the world to
conduct the extremely tough cab tests that we do
at our collision centre. All cabs meet the Swedish
cab strength standards – the toughest in the world.
In real life, the test is comparable to a crash at
80 km/h with a stationary truck, and suggests that
the driver too would survive the crash.
PSS-DUAL system.
Anti-slip front footsteps.
Electric parking brake.
PSS-DUAL system is an emergency
steering system, wherein, in addition
to the engine driven pump, there is a
transmission mounted pump to power
assist steering in case of engine failure.
This pump will be operational only when
there is a cut off in the engine pump line. It
is an additional stand-by system offered as
a safety feature to avoid accidents.
Fixed footstep with anti-slip function
secures the best possible grip in all
weather conditions, for cleaning the
windshield. An extra foldable footstep
further improves the climbing access on
trucks.
The parking brake activation is through
an easy access switch on the dash. Also
the parking brake activates automatically
when the engine is turned off to ensure
a high degree of safety even if the driver
misses it.

meet DGMS requirements
Directorate General of Mines Safety (DGMS) is the Regulatory Agency under the Ministry of Labour and
Employment, Government of India, in matters pertaining to the occupational safety, health and welfare of persons
employed in mines. Volvo in India is committed to meet safety requirements laid down by DGMS and offer a
complete range of features and accessories to meet DGMS standards.
Volvo offers the following features and accessories on Volvo FMX 520 26.1 Cu.m Dump Truck, which make it
compliant with the safety norms specified by DGMS.
Cabin guard extension.
An extended canopy provided on the dump
body covers the cabin fully, in order to
prevent any damage to the cabin during
loading.
Fire resistance hoses at the hot
zone & fire resistance quality
electric wires and sleeves.
The pneumatic hoses and electric wire
sleeves are made of Polyamide (PA), which
is thermoplastic. It is not inflammable and
can withstand heat up to 100O C.

Body lifting position locking
arrangement (Body Tipping
Position Sensor).
A body tipping position sensor is mounted
on the sub-frame. A visual warning is
displayed on the dashboard when the dump
body is not fully seated on the sub-frame.
Tail-gate protection.
In the event of head to tail collision, the
tail-gate protection system reduces
penetration of scow end into cab and
retains survival space for the occupants.
Blind spot mirror
(in front of cabin).
A blind spot mirror is mounted in front of
the cabin on the co-driver side to help
driver get a view of any blind spot area in
the front.
Audio-visual alarm while
reversing.
A DGMS approved audio-visual alarm is
mounted at the end of chassis frame, in
order to alert while reversing the vehicle.
Exhaust / Retard brake.
Propeller shaft guard.
Limiting speed device.
The Volvo engine is designed with an in-built
auxiliary brake with braking effect of 536 hp
at 2300 rpm. When the trucks is negotiating
downhill gradients, the auxiliary brake coupled
with the driveline characteristics ensures a
very high level of retardation.
The propeller shaft guard prevents fall out
of propeller shaft in the rare case of any
breakage.
An electronically controlled governor
enables locking of the speed of the vehicle
at the desired speed limit. Currently, for
Volvo dump truck, the speed is restricted to
not more than 45 km/h.
Fire suppression system.
Rear vision system.
Load indicator & recorder.
Fire suppression system is offered as an
optional fitment. For vehicles with semiautomatic fire suppression system – in
case of fire, the operator has to remove knob
pin & press the knob provided in the cabin.
Consequently, powder spray starts in the
hot zone area from the main cylinder which
suppresses the fire. For vehicles with
fully-automatic fire suppression system – there
is a separate sensor for sensing any fire in the
vehicle.
The rear vision system is offered as an
optional fitment. It consists of a 7” digital
display monitor fitted on the dashboard and
an Infra LED night vision camera mounted
at the rear of chassis. It displays 180
degree vision of the rear area of vehicle
and also operates in no-light conditions
with infrared image sensing. The system
automatically gets activated when reverse
gear is engaged.
Load indicator & recorder measures and
records the payload being carried by the
truck. Load cells are installed on the lifting
arms. As the load is lifted, the trigger and
load cell output is processed by the main
control unit and information of weight is
displayed in the local display unit installed
in the cab.
Seat-belt reminder.
Retro reflective reflectors on
all sides.
Proximity warning device.
The seat-belt reminder is an audio visual
warning displayed on the dashboard if the
driver moves the vehicle without fastening
the seat-belt.
Turbocharge guard & exhaust
tube coated with heat insulated
paint.
A heat shield of aluminised coated steel is
provided over the vertical muffler till the top
of the cabin and over the turbocharger. The
coating quickens heat loss and eliminates
any chances of injury upon contact.
Reflective tapes on sides, front and rear of
the vehicle improves visibility.
The proximity warning device is an optional
fitment on the truck, designed to warn the
driver if there is any obstacle in front of the
vehicle. The system consists of sensors
and a buzzer which provides a beep sound
based on proximity of the obstacle.
Provision of two brakes (Fail safe).
Fail safe brakes are provided in addition to
the dual line service brakes. The fail safe
brakes ensure that the mechanical spring
brakes are applied in the case of complete
failure of the service brakes.
Battery cut-off switch.
Auto dipping system.
A battery cut-off switch is provided in
order to decrease the chance of fire due to
overcharging.
