Salzburg was fortified well back then, so the enemy was not able to conquer them. Therefore, he sought for an alternative. He wanted to starve the city so long until they were ready to admit defeat. The army closed a ring around the city, so that no one would be able to get in or out. The people of Salzburg figured the intention of their enemy out. Although they have always been able to rely on their walls, they now were in a dangerous situation. If the siege would last longer then they had planned, a large famine would break out. Thus, the townmajor ordered a strict fasting. Nevertheless, one day only one bull was left that has not been butchered yet. He was dapple brown and well nurtured. The townmajor came up with a ruse: In the early morning of the next day, the bull was driven over the wide castle walls and shown to the enemy, so that he would not think that the people of Salzburg were already starving! In the following night, they painted the dapple bull white and showed him on the next morning to the besiegers. On the third morning, a jet black bull trotted over the walls. The enemy soldiers were perplexed, believing that the people of Salzburg had to be supplied with food for a long time, so eventually the army withdrew in a dark night. Great joy reigned in the city. The citizens led the bull down to the Salzach and washed him so long, until he was dapple brown again. And because of this, the people are called “Stierwascher” (bull washers) ever since. Politics Austria is as a democratic republic a member of the European Union since 1995. The Republic of Austria’s Head of State is the federal president (currently Heinz Fischer), who is elected every six years by the Austrian citizens. The head of government is the federal chancellor. The Austrian national holiday is on October 26. This date reminds of October 26, 1955, the commemorable day when the National Assembly of that time passed the neutrality bill and – after an occupation by the victorious nations of WWII that lasted for ten years – that, according to the Austrian Independence Treaty, no allied soldier of an occupational army may remain on Austrian ground. With the signing of this treaty and the pledge for everlasting neutrality, Austria received its full sovereignty back. Austria’s States Languages Religion Although Austria, with its 84,000 sq km, is a relatively small country, the republic is very diverse. The nine states of Salzburg, Carinthia, Upper Austria, Lower Austria, Tyrol, Vorarlberg, Styria, Burgenland, and Vienna could not be more different concerning landscape, culture, and regional language varieties. The official language in Austria is German; also, for the majority of the Austrian population it is the mother tongue. Throughout time, a massive amount of different dialects and accents have evolved. Among the officially approved minority languages and regional official languages in Austria are Croatian, Slovenian, and Hungarian. Most Austrians are Christian; two thirds of the population adhere to the Roman Catholic Church. Approximately 376,000 are Protestants, approximately 338,000 are Muslims. (Footnote: no new figure since population census of 2001). Additional minor groups are Buddhists, Jewish people, and Hindus. Austria lies in the heart of Europe and offers a great infrastructure, an excellent connection to the neighboring countries, and an optimal access to international economies and markets. As a republic, Austria is a federal state that consists of nine different member states. Each of the nine states has within the federal constitution its own jurisdiction. The various state constitutions are determined by the respective Landtag. The head of each state is its governor. Austria is a constitutional state, which means that governmental intervention is only permitted in accordance with the law. This principle protects – just like the independence of Austrian courts – the citizens against governmental despotism. Additionally, in Austria government and church (i.e. religion) are strictly divided, so there is no state religion. The Austrian government functions after the tenets of the division of powers. This procedure aims to prevent corruption and concentration of power. The legislation, the executive, and the judicial branches are therefore separated and distributed among different organs. The Austrian government is founded on the liberal principle and especially on the membership principles of the European Union. Both the federal constitution as well as the EU contract of Lisbon (about principles and structure of the EU) are the most important legal foundations of the Austrian political system. A major part of the democratic order in Austria is the existence and diversity of political parties. Currently, the following parties are represented through delegates in the Austrian National Assembly (legislation period: five years): • Social Democrats Sozialdemokratische Partei Österreichs (SPÖ) • Austrian People‘s Party Österreichische Volkspartei (ÖVP) • Liberal Party of Austria - Freiheitliche Partei Österreichs • The Green Party - Die Grünen – Die Grüne Alternative (Grüne) • Team Stronach • Neos The SPÖ and ÖVP are the longest existing parties of Austria and are called traditionally the “Großparteien” (major parties) or “Volksparteien” (people’s parties). The FPÖ, which also already exists for a few decades, sees itself as part of the “Third faction”. The advent of the Green Party dates back to years 1978 and 1982. They finally formed as a regular party of parliament in 1986. go DISCOVER SALZBURG General Salzburg has 531,898 inhabitants and is sixth largest state in Austria with 7,154,23 sq km. Altogether, the 119 municipalities are distributed among six political districts: the statutory city of Salzburg forms beside the five counties Lungau, Pongau, Pinzgau, Tennengau, and Flachgau the sixth political district. Salzburg is situated very central and borders to four of the nine Austrian states: Styria in the east, Carinthia in the south, Tyrol in the west and southwest, and Upper Austria in the northeast. Additionally, Salzburg borders to the neighbor countries Germany (Bavaria) in the northwest and Italy (Southern Tyrol) in the southwest. WEATHER IN SALZBURG In Salzburg, one has the opportunity to enjoy all four seasons. In spring (April-May) the weather is changeable with temperature between 5°C and 20°C. Salzburg’s summer (JuneAugust) presents itself arid and hot most of the time with temperatures between 15°C and 35°C. Autumn tends to be cloudy, changeable, and rainy. The temperatures range from 8°C to 22°C degrees most of the time. Salzburg is especially beautiful during the winter months between November and March. The rather cold temperatures between -10°C and +10°C contribute to a wonderful snow landscape in the entire state of Salzburg. In zones that are free of charge it suffices to put a parking disc with the time of arrival behind the windshield. Almost the entire city center of Salzburg is a pedestrian area. Pollards that are retractable into the ground prevent entry into this area of the city by car. Exceptions and remote controls for residents, business people, and disabled can be requested at the municipal authority. Its two most important summits are the Pongau: The New World of Water “Berchtesgadener Hochthron” and the “Salzburger Hochthron” (1,857 m). From the “Geiereck” in the area of Untersberg railway’s summit station, you are already very close the “Salzburger Hochthron”. After entering the gondola cableway in the valley station of St. Leonhard in Grödig, you can enjoy the view over “Rosittental” and the surrounding, untouched alpine world in a relaxing trip into the heights. When you arrive at the summit station of Unterberg’s railway, a great alpine panorama already awaits you, from the “Gebirgsjäger” memorial, over the lakes of the Salzkammergut, to the perpetual ice of the “Hohe Tauern”. In winter, the mountain invites to downhill skiing. The Untersberg, situated south of Mozart’s hometown, also offers sporting activities and relaxing opportunities during the rest of the year: climbing, hiking, paragliding, a guided tour through the Schellenberger ice cave or simply taking a relaxing break by enjoying local culinary specialties in one of the chalets or at the foot of the mountain in a cozy inn… According to a legend, Emperor Frederick Barbarossa is asleep inside Mt. Untersberg. His beard is said to be growing longer and longer around a round table and to have grown round two times. Myth says that when the beard has grown three times around the table the end of the world has come. When Frederick leaves the mountain, there will be no further Holy Roman Emperor and the last great battle of humankind will be fought on the Walserfeld, a pasture at Wals, west of Salzburg. With its opulent façade and the mighty dome, it is one of the most important buildings of the early Baroque north of the Alps. Destroyed by fires, rebuilt, enlarged and expanded, the dome bears witness of the power and independence of Salzburg’s archbishops. Linzer Gasse 41 5020 Salzburg +43 662 875208 [email protected] www.kirchen.net HOT SPOTS Karajan Square and the Horse Pond 5 Directly beneath “Mönchs- places to be Old Market The Old Market in the Old Town of Salzburg has already been laid out as a municipal trading and marketplace in the 13th century. Today it consists of public rows of houses, of which the core dates back to the Middle Ages but has been overprinted several times in early modern style. A real oddity of the Old Market is the smallest Old Town house of Salzburg. With a breadth of 1.42 meters it is to be found beside the popular café Tomaselli. The tiny house emerged through the making of a small alley between 1830 and 1860. Christkindlmarkt The Salzburger Christkindlmarkt can be visited every year from the middle of November until shortly after Christmas at Domplatz and Residenzplatz. The traditional huts and the specially built starlit sky as lighting give the fair a unique appearance. Domplatz and Marienstatue The “Mariensäule” (Mary’s Pillar) represents the optical center of Domplatz. The statue of Maria Immaculata is surrounded on all four sides by allegorical figures: Angel, Devil, Truth (Wisdom), and Church. A tablet on the side facing the dome explains the meaning of the colossal statues: The secret of Immaculate Conception be so great that the spirit of the angels be moved by great delight, the human wisdom disappear, the devil in malevolence grate, and the triumphing church rejoice. Through its enclosed form, Domplatz has proven itself as the performance venue of Hugo von Hofmannsthal’s famed “Jedermann” (Everyman). During the summer months both stage and grand stand invite to a relaxing break in the center of Old Town’s flair. Getreidegasse is Salzburg’s most fa1 mous historical alleyway and shopping promenade. It is characterized by high and slim rows of houses with their diverse guild symbols over the storefronts. Judengasse (Jew alley) in Salzburg is 2 mostly seen as an exten- sion of Getreidegasse by strollers. The narrow alleyway leads in a slight bend up from the Old Market to Waagplatz. In Judengasse many houses remind of the holocaust and Salzburg’s history in WWII. In house number 15, a synagogue was situated until 1415, house number 13 was the residence of composer Heinrich Biber between 1672 to 1684. Kaigasse - If one strolls from Mozart3 platz out of town or from Kapitelplatz through Kapitelgasse in the di- rection of Kaiviertel, he finds himself back in Kaigasse. “Back here” life runs at a more leisurely pace than on the crowded squares and in Getreidegasse. Beside some faculties of the University of Salzburg, there are also the offices of the government in Kaigasse to be found. Here, one encounters fewer tourists but more students and politicians on their way somewhere. Tip! Festspielbezirk (Festival District) bergfelsen” from the “Sigmundstor” lies Herbert-von-Karajan-Platz in Salzburg’s Old Town. In the vicinity of the square, one can find the “Bürgerspital”, the “Großes Festspielhaus”, the House for Mozart, the Old University and Hotel Goldener Hirsch. The luxuriant Horse Pond was restored by archbishop Firmian in 1732. Linzergasse- In the shade of Kapuziner6 berg, the ancient Linzer Gasse, starting from the “Platzl“ at the “Staatsbrücke” and finishing there, where the Linzer Gate stood until 1894, has lost nothing of its busyness. Since ancient Roman times, the Linzergasse was the main road of the districts to the right of the Salzach and formed the most important outward road from the state capital and residential city of Salzburg in the direction of Linz, Vienna, and to the northeastern Habsburger realm. Square7Markart Markart Square is named after Salzburg’s painter Hans Markart, the “prince of painting” of the Viennese Ringstraße era. House number eight was the residence of the Mozart family. On the opposite side, the state theatre and the main entry to the famed Mirabellgarten can be found. 8 Residenzplatz and Residenzbrunnen Residenzplatz is a magnificent courtyard of the prince-archbishop’s residences. In the center of the square is the residential fountain to be found, Salzburg’s most beautiful and also largest fountain. The water is potable, by the way. Furthermore, Residenzplatz serves now and then as a venue for large sport or music events. Here, football broadcasts, live concerts, and New Years Eve parties take place. Every year in September, the Rupertikirtag (Rupert’s Feast Day) is held on Residenzplatz. The Sigmund-Haffner-Gasse is among 9 the oldest streets of Sal- zburg: It emerged around 1140 in the time, when the Franciscan church became a parish church. The alley enclosed the city to the west until approximately 1620 to the great women’s garden of the St. Peter women’s mon- astery to Kollgegienkirche, Hofstallgasse, and Karajanplatz. Famous residents of Sigmund-Haffner-Gasse were archbishop Wolf Dietrich, his mistress Salome Alt, or composer Heinrich Biber. Steingasse Only a stone’s 10 throw away from the roaring traffic of the 21st century, the ancient Steingasse, situated at the foot of the Capuchin mountain and beside the Salzach, has lost nothing of its medieval charm. After passing the inner stone gate, a wonderful view to Castle Hohensalzburg and an interesting insight into the alleyway with its beautifully renovated houses, the green of the Capuchin mountain, and several small stores, bars, book stores, and galleries await you there. The “Großes Festspielhaus” (Grand Festival Hall), the “Haus für Mozart” (House for Mozart) and the Felsenreitschule together form with Domplatz and Kollegienkirche the Festival district. Archbishop Wolf Dietrich had stables built here in 1606/07, which have successively been opened to the Salzburg Festivals after 1925. Kapitelplatz and Kapitelschwemme 4 If you are on the way to Castle Hohensalzburg, to the castle’s lift, or to St. Peter’s cemetery, you cross Kapitelplatz. It is a lively center in the heart of Salzburg’s Old Town: chess is played with oversized chess figures, shops sell their various goods, or the piece of art “Sphaera” by Stephan Balkenhol is admired. A little bit on the side of the large square, you can find “Kapitelschwemme” (“Chapter’s horse pond”). The open-air museum is separated into five areas because just as Salzburg consists of five states, the areas are aligned after that concept into Flachgau, Tennengau, Pongau, Pinzgau, and Lungau. Interesting permanent and special exhibitions and diverse crafting demonstrations will make your visit an unforgettable experience and offer the visitors a culture and leisure experience with high memorability. For example, each year on November 6, the “Leonhardiritt” (Leonhard’s Ride) takes place in some regions of Salzburg (e.g. St. Johann). It is performed to honor the saint Leonhard, the patron saint of horses and cows. On his memorial day there are also blessings of animals combined with church parades and horse rides taking place. Each Thursday evening in Pre-Christmas time, groups disguise as herders, angels, Mary, and Joseph and knock on each door in the neighborhood. They are called “Anklöckler” and bring congratulations and blessings, remind with songs of Joseph and Mary asking for lodging, and occasionally collect donations for charity organizations. The “Anklöckler” receive often a small gift by the families for their performances or as previously mentioned a donation. Also, during Advent in the beginning of December, the Krampus, a creature resembling the devil (or Santa’s little helper), accompanied by Santa Claus, visits the children with his willow rod. In many communities and the city of Salzburg the “Krampusläufe” (“incubus runs”) take place around December 5. The magical and mysterious “Raunächte” (twelve nights after Christmas) belong to the “Perchten” with their often elaborately worked masks and head pieces. Basically, there are two types of “Perchten”: the light, “good” Schönperchten and the dark, “evil” Schiachperchten (schiach = ugly). The latter appear usually with shaggy pelt costumes, horns, carved grimaces and rods yet they are not to be confused with the character of the “Krampus”. With the “Raunächte” (Thomasnacht December 21 and 22, Christmas Eve December 24 and 25, New Years Eve December 31, and January 1, and the night of Epiphany on January 5 and 6,) in which we humans can understand the language of the animals according to the legend, another old superstitious custom is connected to Raunächte: With incense aromas from a smoke pan and holy water, the evil spirits are banished from the houses, farms, and stables of the humans. A special event takes place every year around September 24, the name day of St. Rupert, Salzburg’s state patron. For five days, the people celebrate on “Rupertikirtag” in Salzburg’s Old Town (Rupert’s Feast Day), a traditional fair or church fair. Everyone in the city is there. Historical fairground rides as well as shooting galleries, Tunnels of Horror, and merry-go-arounds entertain the visitors. Music, dance, and theater are also part of the program, in the beer gardens, party tents, and the farmer’s market traditional and local delicacies are offered. Traditional groups and craftsmen are just a part of the spectacle as Salzburg’s “Hanswurst”. The climax of “Rupertikirtag”, which is attended by over 100,000 people every year, are the final grand fireworks. UNESCO World Cultural Heritage– Salzburg Old Town The spoiled local often only realizes what a unique gem the Old Town of Salzburg is, when his guests stand deeply impressed beside him. Indeed, the city of Salzburg – and especially the historical Old Town – is among the most beautiful spots that one can find in Europe, which was also documented through the nomination for World Cultural Heritage by the UNESCO in 1997. The city definitely does not lack visual attractions and if one visits Salzburg, it can only be recommended that he bring along a little time to be enchanted and captured by the unique atmosphere and the city life. Be it art appreciation, a shopping tour, a walk, visiting a café or just “a day in the city” – Salzburg’s Old Town has many charming places. By the way: You can not only visit Salzburg on foot but also on a boat – since 2002 there is a panorama boat, that goes on the Salzach and makes great views possible. MOZART Salzburg’s Most Famous Son – His Life and Work born 1756 (Salzburg) – died 1791 (Vienna) Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart was born on January 27, 1756 as the seventh child of the “Hochfürstlicher Salzburgischer Kammermusikus” (Princely Salzburgish Chamber Musician) Leopold Mozart (1719-1787) and his wife Anna Maria Walpurga (1720-1778), who was from St. Gilgen. Already in early childhood, the extraordinary musical talent of the two remaining children Maria Anna, called “Nannerl” (1751-1829), and especially her younger brother Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart. In January 1762, Leopold Mozart went on his first journey with the family. For Wolfgang, a time of travelling began, a time of restlessness that filled almost a third of his short life and led him to the most glamorous royal courts. In Munich and Vienna, the wonder child Wolfgang celebrated great triumphs. In summer 1763, the Mozart family went on a great journey through Western Europe that led them over Germany, Belgium, and France to London. Later, the desperate, Europe wide search for a suitable employment for the young musician and composer Wolfgang Amadeus, who has been concertmeister of Salzburg’s court music since 1772, was without success. The political and social reforms, which the change of government brought to Salzburg in 1772 – with prince-archbishop Hieronymus Count Colloredo, a modern prince of enlightenment came to power – forced Mozart to live a strictly regulated life. This circumstance led to a conflict with his employer that lasted for years. In 1773, the Mozart family moved to a house on Hannibalplatz (today Makartplatz 8, Mozart’s residence). After the final dispute between Mozart and Salzburg’s archbishop in 1781, Wolfgang tried to settle down as a freelance artist in Vienna, which appeared to be “the best place in the world for his occupation”. From this point onward, he earned his living most of the time as an opera composer (“The Abduction from the Serailo” KV 384, “The Impresario” KV 486, “Le Nozze di Figaro” KV 492), as a virtuoso on the piano with own compositions, and as a teacher. On August 4, 1782, he married against the will of his father Constanze Weber (1762-1842). Mozart gained his last success in opera on September 6th 1791 in Prag with the premiere of “La Clemenza di Tito” and “Zauberflöte” at Freihaustheater in Vienna. On December 5th 1971 Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart deceided at the age of 35 in his house at Rauhensteingasse in Vienna, in which he composed “Zauberflöte” and his unfinished “Requiem”. Salzburg’s most famous son was burried at the St. Marx cemeterie in an anonymous grave. MOZART 1 Mozart’s Birth House 26 years, from 1747 to 1773, the Mozart family lived on the third floor of the “Hagenauer” house in Getreidegasse 9. Here, the famous son Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart was born on January 27, 1756. The house is a museum today. The visitor is led through original Mozart rooms, which are located on three floors that contain among others historical instruments, documents, letters, memorabilia, and many of the portraits that were made in his time. Their mission was, as it was Mozart’s intention, to build a bridge between tradition and contemporaneous culture. The private NGO tends to the legacy of Mozart in its three core areas of concerts, museums (Mozart’s birthplace, Mozart’s residence) and science. In the “Education Area” it invites in its new format “Klangkarton” children, adolescents, and families to concerts, guided tours and visits to classes. Through the connection to around 100 Mozart communities worldwide, the Foundation Mozarteum Salzburg keeps the legacy of Mozart alive. The spatial apartment on the first floor with its eight rooms offered sufficient space for meetings with friends and musicians. Before Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart moved in the beginning of 1781 finally to Vienna, he had lived for eight years in the house. The “Landschaftskanzler” and “Hofkriegsrat” Johann Ernst von Antretter and his wife Maria Anna Elisabeth, whose entire family was tightly connected to Mozart family, bought the house in September 1765. In the house of Mozartplatz 8 the widow of Mozart, Constanze von Nissen, died on March 6, 1842. The center of the square is the Mozart memorial of Ludwig Schwanthaler. Its festive unveiling took place in 1842 in the presence of the sons of Mozart. 7 Mozart City Tour The Mozart City Tour is among the “classics” of the city tours in Salzburg: It brings the participants to all important places of interest in Salzburg and offers a good overview of the architecture and the cities history. Salzburg’s civic and merchant families and famous people have found their resting place among the beautiful arcades of the cemetery. Among them are Mozart’s father Leopold, Wolfgang’s wife Constanze, her second husband Georg Nikolaus von Nissen, her aunt Genovefa von Weber (mother of the composer Carl Maria von Weber) as well as Elia Castello, the builder of Gabriel’s chapel. Mozart’s beloved sister “Nannerl” was not buried on Sebastian’s cemetery but on Peter’s cemetery. In the passage to the world famous Sebastian’s cemetery, the tomb of the famous physician Theophrastus Bombastus von Hohenheim, aka Paracelsus, is to be found since 1564. He chose the name for the round pistachio/ marzipan creation with the sweet nougat hull to honor the back then not yet so popular son of Salzburg Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart. With the same elaborate manufacturing method and recipe, the “Original Salzburg’s Mozartkugels” are still manufactured by Fürst’s descendants in the 21 century. SOUND OF MUSIC THE MOVIE It was in 1965, when one of most successful and popular productions in the history of movie making was released in the cinemas: “The Sound of Music”. The movie is based on the true story of the widowed baron Georg Ritter von Trapp, who fell in love with and married Maria, the applicant and governess to his seven children. As Hitler annexed Austria in 1938, the family decided to migrate to America because their ideals of life were not reconcilable with the ones of National Socialism. Director Robert Wise’s filming of this romantic, yet tragic, fate was awarded with five Oscars. The production made the main actress Julie Andrews to a crowd favorite and marked the beginning of a long, glamorous career. Up until today – from the U.S. to Japan – a very large international fan base exists. Ironically, the movie and the story behind the movie are barely known to anyone in Austria and Salzburg, although “The Sound of Music” is enormously popular internationally. Many scenes from “The Sound of Music” were filmed right in Mozart’s city, others in the surrounding rural area. For example, Anif Palace, Castle Hohenwerfen, Mondsee, Fuschl, St. Gilgen, and St. Wolfgang served as settings for the movie. Fans are recommended to take the four hour Salzburg “Sound of Music” tour, which includes a visit to some of the original movie settings. Another feature is “The Sound of Salzburg Dinner Show”, where songs from the musical as well as other melodies that made Salzburg famous are played. Tom Cruise and Cameron Diaz was filmed in Mozart’s city. Even in 2008, Nicolas Cage was with “Season of the Witch” guest in Salzburg. Information: Salzburg Information Mozartplatz Mozartplatz 5 5020 Salzburg +43 662 88987-330 [email protected] www.salzburg.info A very significant part of its popularity is beside the Hollywood movie also due to the Broadway musical by Rodgers and Hammerstein, which guested in New York, won six Tony awards, and was sold as a record over three million times. After more than 2,400 shows in London and the great success in the German language area, the legendary musical also had its premiere in Salzburger Landestheater on October 23, 2011. “Sound of Music Tour” Booking: Aside from “The Sound of Music”, Salzburg was able to make some headlines in the more recent past by serving as a filming spot for several international productions. Herbert von Karajans basic idea at the foundation of the Easter festival was to further develop the festival idea in Salzburg, although the Easter festival never saw itself as an offshoot of Salzburg festival in summer but as an event with its own profile and characteristics. This was made possible through top directors, high quality interpreters, and elaborate opera productions. 4 6 8 10 Sommerszene is often perceived as the counterpart to Salzburg Festival. Since 1971, “Szene Salzburg“ stands for contemporaneous stagecraft and music. Initially a platform for local artists, the event has developed over decades to an internationally respected avantgarde festival that is unchallenged in Austria. The focus is on the contemporaneous world of dancing in the fourteen days lasting festival. Theater, music, movie, and fine arts complement the program of sommerszene. Border crossing, artistic risk, new forms of presentation, and high quality are the features that characterize the program every year. “Bauernherbst” in the city and state of Salzburg brings many visitors each year to its over 2,000 events. “Bauernherbst” in Salzburg means: Wandering from one alpine pasture to next under a golden autumn sun and enjoying local specialties, celebrating the ceremonial driving down of cattle from the mountain to the valley and Thanksgiving, experiencing traditional customs and crafts, enjoying specialties, and dancing to traditional music. Many villages, even whole valleys know how to celebrate “Bauernherbst” appropriately. 100 concerts in 50 locations provide special musical experiences each year in October in Salzburg’s Old Town. “Jazz & the City” transforms the Old Town for six days – with its cafés, bars, squares, galleries, and many other venues – into a Mecca of the music scene. The program of the event, which is hosted by Salzburg’s “Altstadtverband” (Old Town Union), includes world music, Jazz, and electronic music of international standard but also promising newcomers. And all of that for free. Each year in late autumn, the city transforms into a Mecca for Jazz fans of all ages. “Salzburger JazzHerbst” counts to the most elegant Jazz festivals in Europe and draws since its foundation in 1996 international and Austrian Jazz musicians to Salzburg. Among the artists are true legends, Newcomers, and sleepers of the scene that delight the audience at the fantastic concerts and Jazz sessions. In 2014, “Jazz Herbst” moves to Grafenegg. sommerszene The festival begins each year on Saturday before Palm Sunday with the opera premiere and continues until Easter Monday, on which the second performance of the opera takes place traditionally. Two kilometers deep within the mountain, a worldwide unique medicinal climate unfolds, of which the effect is proven. The ideal interaction of the three power factors warmth, humidity, and the naturally elevated Radon content form the basis of enormous healing successes. Old Healing Knowledge Rediscovered: Health Vacation at the Waterfall: “Hohe Tauern Health” The initiative Hohe Tauern Health offers especially patients with allergic asthma the opportunity of a health holiday where the healing power of the Krimmler waterfalls is made use of. Upon a stay of more than 14 days in one of the ten certificated Allergic Tauern Hotels with waterfall therapy and selected activities in the national park Hohe Tauern, a remarkable improvement of all patients lung function is diagnosed, which continues for at least four months. This effect can be traced back to the finely sprayed drops and unusually high ion concentration in the water, which is due to the drop height and the frequent hitting of rocks. The effect is acknowledged and confirmed by many doctors and scientists. www.hohe-tauern-health.at Traditional European healing art in Saalachtal in Pinzgau The TEH society has collected the old regional healing knowledge of the women in Pinzgau and made it accessible under the label “Traditionelle Europäische Heilkunde” (Traditional European Healing Art) to the public.
