Seit 50 Jahren ausgezeichnet in Form. Ein halbes Jahrhundert ist eine lange Zeit.
Not new.
Und die hinterlässt bekanntlich Spuren. Bei Menschen sind das graue Haare und ein
paar Falten. Bei Alltagsgegenständen ist es schlimmer: Meistens sind sie unbrauchbar
und das Design weckt allenfalls nostalgische Gefühle.
Ganz anders verhält es sich mit dem Besteck mono-a, das 1958 entworfen wurde und
1959 auf den Markt kam. Nicht nur wir behaupten, dass es heute noch immer so neu
aussieht, als sei es eben erst auf den Markt gekommen. Experten auf der ganzen Welt
rühmen seine zeitlos gute Form als Vorbild für ein neues Gestaltungszeitalter.
Viele jüngere Menschen entdecken mono-a gerade erst und sind erstaunt, wenn sie sein
wahres Alter erfahren. Deshalb sagen wir es im Jubläumsjahr einmal klar und unmissverständlich: mono-a ist nicht neu. Aber es wird auch in 100 Jahren nicht alt aussehen.

Wagnis Design.
Der Entwurf von mono-a war ein großer Wurf. Das
konnte vor 50 Jahren noch niemand wissen. Dem
Fabrikanten Herbert Seibel und dem Industriedesigner Prof. Peter Raacke, die das Besteck damals auf
den Markt brachten, war zwar bewusst, dass sie
etwas völlig Neues wagten. Hellseherische Fähigkeiten besaßen sie jedoch nicht. Und so konnten
beide nicht ahnen, dass sich daraus eine Bestecklegende entwickeln würde.
Trotz der euphorischen Stimmung in der Wirtschaftswunderzeit der Fünfziger Jahre war mono-a
in gestalterischer und wirtschaftlicher Hinsicht ein
Wagnis. Zuerst sah es gar nicht gut aus. Der Besteckfachhandel machte sich über das „Stück Blech“
lustig und die teure Investition drohte ein Flop zu
werden. Doch dann fand mono-a über den Verkauf
in anspruchsvollen Einrichtungshäusern seinen Weg
zu den ersten Kunden. Und die waren von dem
schlichten, unkonventionellen Design so begeistert,
dass mono-a schnell in aller Munde war.
Intrepid design.
The design of mono-a was a big gamble. No one
could have known that 50 years ago. Prof. Peter
Raacke and the manufacturer Herbert Seibel, who
launched the product, were fully aware of the fact
that they were daring something completely new.
They did not have the clairvoyance to know that
they were creating a flatware legend.
In spite of the rampant 1950s euphoria of the German Wonder Years, mono-a was a dare both in
terms of design and economic common sense. At
first things did not look good. The trade made fun
of the “piece of metal.” The considerable investment was on the verge of becoming a flop. mono-a
found its way to the first consumers through sales
to high-end interior design stores. These consumers
were so taken by the simple and unconventional
design, that soon after, mono-a was wildly acknowledged.

Tatort Tisch.
Peter Raacke gehört zu den bekanntesten Designerpersönlichkeiten Deutschlands. Ebenso bekannt
ist sein Sohn, der Schauspieler Dominic Raacke,
der als Berliner Tatort-Kommissar Till Ritter regelmäßig im Fernsehen zu sehen ist. „Dominic hat mein
künstlerisches Talent geerbt, denn Design bedeutet
eigentlich Gestaltung. Und als Schauspieler und
Drehbuchautor gestaltet er schließlich Rollen,“ sagt
Peter Raacke. Inzwischen haben Vater und Sohn
schon viele gemeinsame Auftritte in Talk-Shows und
für Reportagen absolviert. Auch mono-a ist dabei
immer wieder ein Thema.

Peter Raacke is one of the most distinguished and
best know design personalities in Germany.
Just as famous is his son, the actor Dominic
Raacke, who regularly appears as Commissioner
Till Ritter on the popular German TV series Tatort
(Crime Scene). “Dominic has inherited my artistic
talent, because design is creating, as an actor and
scriptwriter he creates roles,” says Peter Raacke.
Father and son continue to appear jointly on talk
shows and media reports. mono-a is an ever
present topic.

mono-a. When introduced in 1959 mono-a heralded a new era – it was the first
flatware that totally rejected any decorative elements. The name mono stems from
the fact that the knife was originally made out of one single piece of stainless steel,
a so-called monolith. At the same time, it is a reference to the singular nature of the
design. Prof. Raacke’s design is the most sold designer flatware in Germany, and
continues to enlarge its fan base across the globe. Innumerable awards and exhibits,
at home and abroad, are testimony to the iconic nature of this modern design.

kleine Bruder von mono-a und genauso gut durchdacht wie der berühmte Designklassiker. Größe und Formen wurden kindgerecht angepasst. Auch das Kinderbesteck
mono smile zeichnet sich durch sorgfältige Formgestaltung aus. Dazu haben exakte
Beobachtungen der kindlichen Bewegungsabläufe beim Essen beigetragen.
Die kreisrunde Verbreiterung am Ende der Besteckgriffe sorgt für ausgezeichneten
Halt in kleinen Händen. Messerklinge und Gabelspitzen sind sanft abgestumpft.

brother, and just as carefully thought-through as the famous design icon. Size and
shape were carefully adapted to little hands. The children’s set mono smile also takes
into consideration the requirements of the little hands. Painstaking observations of
children’s eating habits have been central to the design. The circle at the end of the
handle of all pieces, assures the perfect grip for the smallest hand. Fork tines and knife
blade have been gently dulled for safety.

Hinter mono steht das Unternehmen Seibel Designpartner, das aus der Metallwarenfabrik Seibel
hervorgegangen ist und die traditionelle Manufaktur zur Metallbearbeitung weiterführt. Die Familie
Seibel ist schon seit über hundert Jahren in der
Produktion von Tafelbestecken und Tischaccessoires

introduced in 1983 and created a true “teavolution”. The concept of making the sieve
almost as large as the teapot – in order to give the leaves maximum room to expand

in creating the stage for a single blossom. Consisting of an inwardly curved stainless

wieder faszinierende Produkte der Tischkultur entwirft. Born in Varkus, Finland in 1962, Mikaela Dörfel
exhibits an extraordinary sensitivity for innovate shapes. After completing her studies in industrial design
in Hamburg, she spent eight years as Design Manager for Rosenthal. In 1996 she established her own
firm. Porcelain and stainless steel are her materials of choice. She uses these for mono as well as other
companies, creating fascinating products for the discerning table.

der AEG, bevor er an der Hochschule für Gestaltung in Kassel Industriedesign studierte. Anschließend
sammelte er Erfahrungen in Werbeagenturen und Architekturbüros. Seit 1975 ist er mit eigenem Designbüro im Produkt-, Verpackungs- und Corporate-Design tätig. attending the Kassel Institute of Design. Subsequently he gathered valuable experience while working
with advertising agencies and architectural companies. He established his own company in 1975, and
since then has been active in the design of product, packaging and corporate design. He has received
numerous awards for his work.

Außerordentlich schwungvoll präsentieren sich viele Arbeiten des 1955 in Saarbrücken geborenen Designers Ralph Krämer. Vielleicht liegt es daran, dass er nach dem Studium des Industriedesigns zunächst
für einen Sportartikelhersteller Surfbretter entworfen hat. Seit 1983 ist er freiberuflich tätig und hat sich
vor allem auf Haushaltsartikel, Bestecke und Tafelgeräte spezialisiert. Seine Entwürfe bereichern das
mono-Programm kontinuierlich seit fünfzehn Jahren. Born in Saarbrücken in 1955, Ralph Krämer’s designs seem imbued with a great deal of momentum. Perhaps this is because after completing his studies
in industrial design he worked for a sporting goods company designing surfboards. He has been an
independent designer since 1983, specializing in household items, flatware and tableware. His designs
have enriched the mono program for the last fifteen years.
Ute Schniedermann
In zwei Welten, die eng miteinander in Beziehung stehen, ist Ute Schniedermann zuhause. 1959 in
Bielefeld geboren, studierte sie außer Produktdesign auch Innenarchitektur. Seit 1997 führt sie ein
eigenes Büro in Hamburg und widmet sich den Schwerpunkten Innenarchitektur, Konzeption und Planung
im Objektbereich sowie dem Produktdesign für Unternehmen der Möbel- und Konsumgüterbranche. Ute
Schiedermann, born in Bielefeld in 1959 is at home in two worlds that are closely linked to one another – she studied both product design and interior design. She has her own business in Hamburg since
1997, concentrating mainly in interior design, project concept and planning, as well as product design
and development for companies in the furniture and consumer goods area.
Michael Schneider
Mit unkonventionellen Ideen wie dem „Steinzeitbesteck“ mono-zeug überrascht Michael Schneider immer
wieder die Designszene. Er wurde 1962 in Geislingen geboren und absolvierte ein Studium der Produktgestaltung an der Kunstakademie Stuttgart. Nach Tätigkeit bei einer Designagentur in Stuttgart eröffnete
er 1993 sein eigenes Designbüro in Köln. Er entwirft neben Bestecken zahlreiche andere Produkte wie
Möbel, Badezimmerelemente und medizintechnische Geräte. With unconventional ideas such as the
“stone age” flatware mono-tools, Michael Schneider keeps surprising the design scene. Born in 1962 in
Geislingen, he completed his studies in product design at the Art Academy in Stuttgart. After working
at a design studio in Stuttgart, he established his own business in Cologne. In addition to flatware he
designs a myriad of products, such as furniture, bathroom accessories and medical apparatus.
Fried Ulber
Ursprünglich begann der 1947 in Wülfrath geborene Fried Ulber ein Maschinenbaustudium, doch dann
entschied er sich für seinen eigentlichen Berufswunsch und studierte Industriedesign an der Werkkunstschule und der Gesamthochschule Wuppertal. Seit 1973 selbständig, ist er heute ein gefragter Designer,
der hervorragend mit dem Material Edelstahl umzugehen weiß und eine klare Formensprache bevorzugt.
Born in Wülfrath in 1947, Fried Ulber originally studied mechanical engineering, but then he followed
his original career path by studying industrial design in Wuppertal. As an independent designer since
1973, he is much in demand, and at the head of his class in his understanding and handling of stainless
steel, a material that allows him to express his preference for clarity of form.

bei profaneren Gegenständen. Die
funktionell und ästhetisch perfekt
gestalte Büroklammer wurde erstmals
im Jahr 1894 von der englischen Firma
The Gem Manufacturing Company
angeboten. Noch über hundert Jahre
später wird sie gerühmt: „Ihre Ausführung ist elegant, sodass die Gesinnung
irgendeines Puristen nicht verletzt werden kann.“ “Less is more”. This basic
principle for good design is also valid for
more mundane items. The functional and
aesthetically perfectly designed paper
clip was first introduced in 1894 by the
British firm The Gem Manufacturing
Company. More than one hundred years
later it is still praised: “The execution is
so elegant, that even the most demanding
purist cannot take umbrage.”
Not pretentious.

Als Trinkgefäß für Tee, Kaffee und
Kakao kam die Tasse aus China und
Arabien nach Europa. Im Gegensatz
zum Becher haben Tassen immer einen
Henkel und sind zumeist freier, oft auch
künstlerisch gestaltet. Aufwendig dekorierte, kostbare Sammeltassen dienen
weniger dem täglichen Gebrauch, sondern mehr der Erbauung des Besitzers.
As a drinking vessel for tea, coffee and
cocoa, the cup came to Europe from
China and the Middle East. In contrast
to a beaker, cups always have a handle,
are more whimsical, and are often
artistically enhanced. Heavily decorated,
valuable collectors items are rarely for
everyday use, but are rather acquired for
the sake of ownership.

Die Vorfahren des modernen Menschen
waren keineswegs primitiv. So schließen Wissenschaftler aus dem größeren

dass er mindestens so intelligent war

Evergreens wie Bärlauch, Petersilie,
Salbei und Rosmarin eine Menge zu
entdecken. Allein in Europa wachsen
rund 15.000 essbare Wildpflanzen.
The ever increasing number of ambitious
home chefs is proof that good taste is
on the rise. Fresh herbs and spices are
the stars of modern, light, and healthy
cuisine. In addition to the usual suspects,
such as basil, parsley, saffron, and
rosemary there are many herbs yet to be
discovered. In Europe alone there are
over 15,000 edible wild plants.

the world, the majority eat with their
fingers. 1.2 billion use chopsticks, and
only 500 million people use a knife and
fork at mealtime, and even they resort to
finger food and satiate themselves with

Auch Dickhäuter sind Feinschmecker.
Als reine Pflanzenfresser nehmen Elefanten rund 200 Kilogramm Nahrung
am Tag zu sich, wobei sie Erdnüsse als
besondere Delikatesse schätzen. Als
Greif- und Saugwerkzeug dient dabei
der Rüssel, ein anatomisches Wunderwerk, das über einen feinen Tastsinn
verfügt und selbst kleinste Gegenstände

Deutschland. Zu den beliebtesten gehört das „Frankfurter Würstchen“, eine
schlanke, zart geräucherte Brühwurst

erhitzt und darf keinesfalls gekocht werden. In Frankfurt gibt es diese Wurstsorte schon seit dem 13. Jahrhundert und
ihr Name ist in Deutschland geschützt.
There are some 1,500 different types of
sausage in Germany. Among the most
popular is the hot dog (Frankfurter), a
thin, mildly smoked sausage made of
100% pork. Traditionally, it is heated in
water for some eight minutes, and must
never be boiled. This type of sausage has
been available since the 13th century,
and the name “Frankfurter” is protected
in Germany.

Erste Versuche, einen Feuerlöscher zu
konstruieren, der von selbst, also mit
eigens erzeugtem Druck das Löschmittel
ausspritzt, fanden 1851 in England
statt. Damals wurde noch Wasser
benutzt, doch schon bald erkannte man
die feuerlöschende Wirkung des Gases
Kohlendioxid. Der erste Vorläufer der
heute üblichen Druckgasfeuerlöscher
wurde im Jahr 1912 in Deutschland
patentiert. The first trials with a selfcontained fire extinguisher – dispersion
through pressure – took place in
England in 1851. At first water was
used, but soon the advantages of
carbon dioxide were recognized.
The forerunner of the modern day
fire extinguisher was first patented in
Germany in 1912.

Die Zuckerwatte ist eine amerikanische
Erfindung aus dem Jahr 1897. Zwei
Konditoren aus Nashville, Tennessee,
kamen auf die Idee, Zucker zu erhitzen,
zu verflüssigen und um eine Spindel
zu schleudern. Dabei verwandelt er
sich von seinem kristallinen Ausgangszustand in die beliebte amorphe,
watteartige Form. Für eine Portion reichen etwa 5 Gramm Haushaltszucker.
Cotton candy is an American invention
dating back to 1897. Two candy makers
from Nashville, Tennessee, got the idea
of heating sugar, liquefying it and spinning it on a stick. This process allowed
the sugar to convert from its crystallized
form to the popular amorphous treat.
One portion is roughly the equivalent of
one fifth of an ounce of regular sugar.

Blumenblüten symbolisieren augenscheinlich, wie eng Schönheit und
Vergänglichkeit miteinander verbunden
sind. Zu den empfindlichsten Blumen
gehört der Mohn, von dem es weltweit
rund 120 Arten gibt. Maler und Fotografen lassen sich gerne von den prächtigen Blüten des isländischen Mohns
inspirieren. Der Blumenhandel liefert
präparierte Mohn-Schnittblumen, um die
Vergänglichkeit etwas hinauszuzögern.
Blossoms, at least visually, symbolize the
fact that beauty is passing. Among the
most delicate flowers are poppies, of
which there are more than 120 varieties.
Painters and photographers are particularly inspired by the striking blossoms of
Icelandic poppies. Commercial florists
add preservatives in order to delay the
wilting process of the cut flowers.

Hektik und Stress werden vor allem
mit dem Leben in den großen Städten
verbunden. Doch genau dahin zieht
es die Menschen. Lebte 1950 noch
70 Prozent der Weltbevölkerung auf
dem Lande, so ist es seit 2007 nur
noch weniger als die Hälfte. Und die
Urbanisierung geht weiter: Im Jahr
2050 werden laut Schätzungen der
UNO rund 70 Prozent der Menschen
in städtischen Metropolen leben.
Hectic and stress are two terms usually
associated with life in large cities. That
is where they are drawn to. In 1950, 70
percent of the world’s population lived in
rural areas. In 2007 it is less than half.
Urbanization continues: according to
UN figures, in 2050, 70 percent of the
population will live in large metropolitan
areas.

„Geben ist seliger denn nehmen.“ Der
berühmte Satz aus dem Neuen Testament macht deutlich, dass es Menschen
glücklich macht, anderen Menschen
etwas zu geben. Dies wird längst auch
durch wissenschaftliche Studien belegt.
Wobei man freilich niemals unbedacht
etwas verschenken sollte. Schon der
römische Dichter Ovid mahnte: „Geben
erfordert Verstand.“ “To give is more
blessed than to receive.” The famous
line from the New Testament says it
clearly: it makes people happy to give
unto others. Scientific research has also
confirmed this premise. One should,
however, never give something away
without thinking about it. The Roman
poet Ovid said: “To give requires
insight.”

Die Erfindung des Teebeutels war ein
Zufall. Anfang des 19. Jahrhundert verpackte ein amerikanischer Teehändler
Teeblätter für den Transport in kleine,
platzsparende Seidenbeutel. Seine
Kunden nahmen an, dies sei als neue,
komfortablere Zubereitungsmethode
gedacht und tauchten die Beutel in
Wasser. In seiner heutigen Form kam
der Teebeutel erstmals 1929 auf den
Markt. The invention of the teabag was
accidental. At the beginning of the 19th
century an American tea dealer packed
tea leaves in small silken bags for easier
transport. His customers assumed that this
was done as a new and efficient way of
preparing tea, and simply dunked the
bags in water. The modern format came
to market in 1929.
Not important.
Nicht wichtig.
Beim Entwurf von mono-a machte sich
Prof. Peter Racke auch Gedanken über
die Herstellung des Bestecks. Sein Ziel
war, das Material effizient zu nutzen
und möglichst wenig Stanzabfälle zu
produzieren. Indem er auch scheinbar
Unwichtiges bedachte, verwirklichte er
bereits in den 50 er Jahren ökologische
Prinzipien. While designing mono-a
Prof. Peter Raacke also immersed
himself into the production process
for the flatware. His goal was to use
the material efficiently, and reduce
the scrap produced during stamping.
While taking into consideration apparent minutiae, he was also ahead of his
time, in 1959, in terms of ecological
principles.
