The Newsletter of the Southeast Virginia Dressage Association
December 2013
Volume 30, Issue 12
2013 was an exciting year for
the SVDA!
Our chapter hosted the USDF
L Program and several of our
members went through the Part
1 and on to Part II earning their
USDF L graduate certificates.
And, our president, Kathy
Rowse, was accepted as a faculty member of the USDF Program L Program.
Many members had great recognized and schooling show success and forged
partnerships with new equine partners.
The weather was not with us this year but, thanks to an increase in sanctionedshow approvals, we were able to reschedule our championship schooling show.
On behalf of the board, I hope everyone has a wonderful Christmas season!
Your Newsletter Editor,
Anna

Quotable Quotes:
"Combining straight lines with demi voltes, demi voltes on the
right and left hand, i.e. serpentines, and the transitions from entire
voltes to figures of eight..., etc., is very important. The more creative one is in this area, the more one will make the horse attentive
to the aids and supple." (Friedrich v.Krane, 1856)
“Never rest your hands on the horse's mouth. You make a contract
with it: "You carry your head and I'll carry my hands." William
Steinkraus, US Olympic Jumping team member and coach.

Louise Murray welcomes her new 17H TB Gelding Mikey home!
Mikey came from a wonderful lady who wanted a little girl who would adore him, and was
coordinated through the efforts of Diamonds in the Rough and Anna Schriebl. A former fox
hunter and schoolmaster, Mikey is just the nicest boy, and perfect match for Louise. She
plans to start showing him in the Spring of 2014.

Pferdechen Tip: Pferdechen thanks Kathy Rowse
for this tip that she discovered. He’s taking December off!
"When your veterinarian prescribes cold therapy for your
horse, an easy and inexpensive method is to pour Palmolive dish detergent into a heavy resealable plastic bag and
put it in the freezer. The detergent does not freeze solid
(other brands do), so in a few hours, you’ll have a fully flexible cold pack. Contour it to your horse’s leg, holding it in
place with a self-adhesive elastic bandage. The detergent
is nontoxic, so if a bag leaks or breaks, the liquid can be
washed off. When a bag thaws, put it back in the freezer
and grab another. It works great for people, too!"

pictured with four of her Christopher Newport University Dressage Club members (L-R) Kelsey Minnick, Emily Nelson, Aubrey Kosa and Beth Curran (also SVDA member), along with assistant coach and SVDA member Jennifer
Torres. The CNU girls came down and volunteered for the show and were a huge help ring stewarding, handing out
awards, gate keeping, and many other duties. The girls were very inspired by all the wonderful rides and have helped
