Burst
Harriet’s Thursday Burst
By Pimp
A small crowd of runners gathered at the Mount Pleasure
site for what was to be a rainy run. At the allotted time
about a dozen of us started up the hill towards the temple
entrance to begin the muddy climb retracing the steps taken
earlier that day by Tiny and Huge. Edna looked around at
the start and noticed she was the only female to be braving
the conditions that day.
Shit In The Pit and yours truly were first up the hill but
as expected I couldn’t keep the pace and so let the frontrunners pass. It was a slippery one catching many of us out
with muddy slides heading back down the hill during an
arduous climb.
After a slow succession of runners passed me I managed to
cling onto a group consisting of Du La Sing, Silent Man and
Mother Hen as we made our way across the streams and rocks.
At one point I stopped for a breather and let them continue
on without me, Mother Hen made sure I had a torch and later
I could hear Du La Sing faithfully calling paper up ahead
so I wouldn’t get lost……again.
Ten minutes later while taking a slight detour off the
paper trail, I felt a searing pain on my knee and another
on the side of my face and realized I had had my first
painful introduction to the local bees. Loud cries of
f*&%$KK…. reverberated around the jungle as I tried to
remember my Bear Grylls bee survival training, doing even
more damage to my now animated limbs as I blasted through
the jungle aimlessly doing my best impression of the funky
chicken. Eventually stopped at a stream figuring I could at
least roll around in the muddy water if the two muggers had
summoned their mates to rough up the Pimp a bit more. All
clear, found paper again and headed up the last hill
nursing a fast swelling jaw.
As I was cresting the top I heard the trio of Du La Sing,
Silent Man and Mother Hen calling out for me figuring they
would pick my up on their way back down after they had lost
paper for some time at the top and eventually finding the
trail downward. I followed the sound of their voices and
joined them a minute or so later. Of course I had to
recount my bee story, but as experienced Hashers there was
little sympathy. I realized then that this was going to be
a regular feature of the run.
Down we went for the final assault and the twisting,
turning nature of it combined with wet and muddy paper on
the ground (bring more staples next time Huge!), kept us on
our toes. I heard loud crashing behind me when suddenly a
late starting Ice Man pops out and says hello to everyone
and then continues to crash back down the hill like a
raging Elephant.
Black skies had the trail go dark early and the last part
was particularly difficult as we tried to stay on muddy
paper. Later Ice Man would recall he found Good Year. At
some point, Good Year, one of the most experienced Hashers
could not find the paper and had ended up somewhere on the
road for which he was later shamefully placed on the cold
stuff by Ice Man himself.
It was an adventurous& twisty run and I later joked with
Huge that it was like an Indiana Jones trek and had half
expected to be greeted by natives with blow darts at any
moment .Back at base at last and those not willing to brave
the rain and mud made up the sizable numbers for the dinner
club. The night was long and the beers were cold, I told my
bee story to anyone who would listen …..
