City and state
São Paulo ist sowohl der Name der Stadt als auch des Bundesstaates. Die Bewohner des Staates werden Paulistas
genannt, jene der Stadt dagegen Paulistanos. Im Staat São
Paulo leben rund 40 Millionen Menschen, 11 Millionen
davon in der Stadt, 19 Millionen im Grossraum der Stadt.

2013 schaffte es São Paulo auf Platz 6 der Forbes-Liste

São Paulo is the name of both the city and the federal state.
Residents of the state are known as Paulistas while city
dwellers are called Paulistanos. The state of São Paulo is
home to some 40 million people, 11 million of whom live in
the city, whose agglomeration numbers 19 million.
The climate is subtropical. In summer (January, February) the temperature reaches 35 degrees. This is also the
season of heaviest rainfall. In winter (July) temperatures
drop down to 10 degrees, with very little rainfall.
In 2013, São Paulo ranked 6th on the Forbes list of the top
10 cities in terms of billionaires. The magazine claims that
26 billionaires reside in the city. São Paulo is Brazil’s leading
business centre and Latin America’s biggest industrial
­urban area.

Old-fashioned in appearance,
this bar in the popular Vila
Madalena district fills up with
trendy locals and artistic types in
the late afternoon. The bar is
lined with a good 3,600 bottles of
spirits and the kitchen conjures
up deep-fried stockfish balls,
­salads and pepper steaks. People
gather in the late evening down
in the Sub Astor, a cellar bar with
a speakeasy atmosphere.

the Museu Brasileiro da Escul­
tura and its gardens are almost
more interesting than the sculptures on show there. Never­
theless, it’s worth taking a look
at what’s inside the floating block
of cement, with its changing

The Atlantic Forest South-East
Reserves, in the states of Paraná
and São Paulo, contain some of
the best and most extensive
­examples of Atlantic forest in
Brazil.
The 25 protected areas that
make up the site (some 470,000
hectares in total) display the
­biological wealth and evo­
lutionary history of the last
­remaining Atlantic forests. From
mountains covered by dense
­forests down to extended wetlands, coastal islands with
­isolated mountains and vast
dunes, the area comprises a rich
natural environment of great
scenic beauty.
The colourful food market is
housed in an imposing hall with
gorgeous mosaic windows built
in 1933. On sale are locally grown
mangos of all varieties, exotic
cashew nuts, sausages, cheese
and stockfish. Special highlights
are the cachaça booths and the
stalls selling stunning mortadella
sandwiches and “pastels” filled
with stockfish for people to snack
on as they shop.
