Swift leads American Country Awards nominations
NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) — Taylor Swift is the top nominee for the American Country
Awards.
A news release says Swift received eight nominations, including top honor artist of the year.
Blake Shelton and Florida Georgia Line are next with seven apiece.
The fourth annual fan-voted ACAs will be broadcast Dec. 10 from Las Vegas on Fox with
NASCAR driver Danica Patrick and country singer Trace Adkins serving as co-hosts.
Jason Aldean and Luke Bryan join Swift, Shelton and Florida Georgia Line in the artist of the
year category. Swift is the only performer to have been nominated for the award in every year the
show's been held.
Patent and trademark center opens in Houghton
HOUGHTON -- A new patent and trademark resource center opened in Michigan Tech's Van
Pelt and Opie Library to assist community members in gaining their own patents and trademarks.
The U.S. Patent and Trademark Office has a network of 84 centers nationwide, including the
new center in Houghton. The USPTO funds the center with a small yearly fee from the university of about $50.
Part of the patent and trademark process includes proving a potential invention hasn't already
been patented or trademarked. The resource center will allow anyone to research inventions before
spending money on the USPTO application process.
"Ultimately, if we have more patents and trademarks granted in the area, that will help build up
the innovation and entrepreneurial communities as well," said PTRC representative Sarah Lucchesi. "So, we really hope that it will be a good economic investment for the community."
The patent and trademark resource center is open and free to the public, and no affiliation with
the university is required to utilize the services.

Winter driving tps for staying safe
It seems that each year more and more "Michiganders" are forgetting their winter driving skills.
According to research done by, Icy Road Safety, Michigan ranked fifth in the entire nation for
winter driving fatalities. Icy Road Safety reported that between 2009 and 2010 there were 18
road fatalities in Michigan Most of these winter accidents could have been avoided if people would
just remember to anticipate the road surface conditions. By following a few simple driving tips
you will be able to greatly increase your chances of avoiding an accident.
- Allow extra time to arrive at your destination - Drive slower than normal, and pay attention to the other cars around you
- Allow for extra spacing in-between you and another vehicle
- Clear snow from your windshield to increase visibility - Be
prepared for black ice, stalled cars, and poor visibility from
snow - Avoid skidding by slowly easing off the accelerator and
pumping the brakes - Always wear your seatbelt - Always use
a DD (Designated Driver) after having an alcoholic drink - If
you must travel during harsh weather, be sure to let others
know. Things to let them know would be route, estimated travel time, and arrival time. - Be sure that your cell phone is
charged incase of an emergency, however, refrain from using
your phone while driving. - Stay alert at all times - Watch for
roadsigns, various landmarks, construction signs, and potholes
- Never leave your vehicle running in a closed garage. Vehicle
maintenance also plays a major role in staying safe during the
winter months.
(AP) -In many places people stay up late to see the old
year out and the new year in.
Almost everywhere in the
world church bells ring, horns
toot, whistles blow, sirens
shriek. London's Trafalgar
Square and New York City's
Times Square swarm with
crowds of happy, noisy people. The hullabaloo expresses
people's high spirits at holiday
time.
Chinese New Year - Many
Chinese children dress in new
clothes to celebrate the Chinese New Year. People carry lanterns and join in a huge parade led by
a silk dragon, the Chinese symbol of strength. According to legend, the dragon hibernates most
of the year, so people throw firecrackers to keep the dragon awake.
In the Chinese lunar calendar each of the 12 years is named after an animal. According to Legend, Lord Buddha asked all the animals to come to him before he left the earth. Only 12 animals
came to wish him farewell, and as a reward Buddha named a year after each one.
Rosh Hashanah, Yom Kippur - In September or October, Jews believe that God opens the Book
of Life for 10 days, starting with Rosh Hashanah (the Jewish New Year) and ending with Yom
Kippur (the Day of Atonement). During these days, the holiest in the Jewish year, Jews try to
atone for any wrongdoing and to forgive others. A ram's horn trumpet, known as the shofar, is
blown before and during Rosh Hashanah and at the conclusion of Yom Kippur.
New Year History - Ancient Greeks began their new year with the new moon after June 21.
Before the time of Julius Caesar the Roman new year started on March 1. In most European countries during the Middle Ages the new year began on March 25, the day of the Feast of the Annunciation.

What is the pledge to the Michigan state
flag?
Michigan has an official pledge of allegiance to its state flag.
Written by Harold G. Coburn, it was adopted as Public Act 165
of 1972. (Look up Public Act 165 of 1972 on the Michigan
Legislature's Michigan Compiled Laws web site.) This is the
pledge: I pledge allegiance to the flag of Michigan, and to the
state for which it stands, 2 beautiful peninsulas united by a
bridge of steel, where equal opportunity and justice to all is our
ideal. SOURCE: http://www.michigan.gov
Did you know?
There are close to 350 million Real Christmas Trees currently growing on Christmas Tree farms in the U.S. alone, all
planted by farmers.
It can take as many as 15 years to grow a tree of typical
height (6 - 7 feet) or as little as 4 years, but the average
growing time is 7 years.

LET YOUR IMAGINATION
SHINE...
www.usatoday.com Imagine this.You buy an
office desk on Craigslist. It
costs you $150. You try to
get it through a doorway in
your home but the gap isn’t
wide enough…by a fraction
of an inch.
To get the desk through,
you need to take it apart.
Upon dismantling it, you
discover hidden under the
desk’s top a plastic bag. You
open it up and to your utter
astonishment it contains not
$1,000, not even in
$10,000, but $98,000 big
ones.
Well, this just happened.
Just like that. To a guy in
Connecticut.
Rabbi Noah Muroff, a New
Haven schoolteacher, said
he felt, quite understandably, utterly shocked to
stumble across the fat bag of
cash.
“The first reaction that my
wife and I had when we
opened the bag and saw the
money was one of complete
and total disbelief. We said
to each other that this only
happens in the movies, we
couldn’t believe it was happening.”
Well, Muroff explained
that when he went to collect
the desk, the seller had mentioned in passing that she’d
bought it from Staples and
put it together herself.
“So I said to my wife that
this is her money that was
sitting in the desk the whole
time,” Muroff said. “It’s
clearly hers. So we had an
obligation to return the
money to her.”
He called the former owner
within 10 minutes of finding
the bag of Benjamins and
arranged to return the money
the following day, which he
duly did. The woman told
Muroff she’d received the

Thieves steal 160 sheep near UK town of Wool
LONDON -- LONDON (AP) — Wool's wool is missing.
Police in southwest England appealed for help in tracking down thieves who made off with 160
sheep from a field near the village of Wool.
Police say the sheep were stolen and that the thieves would have needed a large vehicle to move
the woolly haul.
Constable Adam Taylor says all of the sheep were electronically tagged.
He is urging anyone who has witnessed suspicious activity — or been offered sheep "in unusual circumstances or for very low prices" — to come forward.
Copper thieves knock Spokane radio station off
the air
SPOKANE, Wash., (AP) - A religious radio station in Spokane, Wash., was knocked off the air
when copper thieves pulled the wiring off its transmission tower.
The Spokane County Sheriff's Department said in a written statement it would cost KMBI-AM
several thousand dollars to rewire the tower and get back on the air.
Deputy Mike McNees was called to the KMBI studio when employees noted the monitor on
one of the station's towers was out and the station was no longer broadcasting. Further investigation by the employee revealed numerous wires had been stripped from the tower.
The investigation is continuing.
Purse containing $13,000 found floating
at Florida beach
DAYTONA BEACH (AP) - Authorities in Florida said a woman turned in a purse found floating in the ocean with $13,000 cash inside.
Daytona Beach police said Darlene Curley of Tennessee, who was staying at the Super 8 Motel
in Daytona Beach during the weekend, found the purse floating and turned it over to Beach Safety officers, who discovered it contained a bank bag with $13,000 cash as well as several thousand dollars worth of jewelry, WESH-TV, Orlando.
Curley said she and her daughter spotted the purse, along with shoes and towels, while walking
around 7 a.m.
"We were worried someone might have drowned or something could have happened to them
on the beach," she said.
Police said they were able to return the bag and its contents to its rightful owner, a woman who
lost it while visiting the beach the night before.
Police: Woman using cellphone drove into herd of
cows
MOUNT HOPE, N.Y. (UPI) — Authorities in New York state said a woman allegedly distracted by her cellphone drove into a herd of cows.
Mount Hope police said Daisy Cowit, 21, of Wawayanda was allegedly using her cellphone as
she drove into a herd of cows crossing the road, striking six cows and nearly injuring two farm
hands, the Middletown Times Herald-Record reported. Police said three of the cows had to undergo emergency surgery. All of the animals survived.
Cowit was charged with two counts of second-degree reckless endangerment and one count
each of fourth-degree criminal mischief and reckless driving. She was also ticketed for driving a
car while using a mobile phone and failure to exercise due care.

Deer with arrow in its head
rescued in New Jersey
ROCKAWAY TOWNSHIP, N.J. (AP) — Wildlife officials
have removed an arrow from a young deer's head and released
the animal back into the New Jersey woods.
The arrow that had completely pierced the 5-month-old male
deer's head was removed by biologists with the Department of
Environmental Protection.
DEP spokesman Larry Hajna ays the arrow removal was performed at a wooded private property in Rockaway Township,
about 25 miles west of New York City. The property owner first
spotted the injured deer early in November.
The biologists who did the procedure say the arrow had not
damaged any major arteries or organs and the deer's prognosis
for survival is excellent.
The animal was treated with preventive antibiotics and
released back into the wild.

(AP) LANSING, Mich. This guy has all the luck.
Officials say Joseph Palmarchuk won a $1.35 million lottery jackpot in
Michigan’s Classic Lotto

years, Palmarchuk has also
won a $1 million lottery
game in Tennessee.
Palmarchuk and wife
Phillis moved to Mecosta
County, north of Grand

that retailers put aside as

The Palmarchuks plan to
hunt for a condominium in a
warm state to skip Michigan
winters.
Arthritis Tips
http://newsinhealth.nih.govArthritis can damage not only
your joints, but also internal
organs and skin. Talk to your
doctor about what you can do.
Here are some ideas:
Try to keep at a healthy
weight that’s normal for your
height. Exercise. A health professional can show you how to
move more easily. Going for a
walk every day will help, too.
If you had a severe joint
injury, be careful about protecting it during future activities. Don’t smoke. People who
smoke are more likely to get
rheumatoid arthritis, and their
symptoms tend to be worse.
Take your medicines when
and how you are supposed to.
They can help reduce pain and
stiffness. Try taking a warm
shower in the morning.

that each column, each row, and each of the nine 3×3 sub-grids
that compose the grid (also called ÒboxesÓ, ÒblocksÓ, ÒregionsÓ,
or Òsub-squaresÓ) contains all of the digits from 1 to 9. The puzzle
setter provides a partially completed grid, which typically
has a unique solution.

Marilyn Monroe to join Madame
Tussauds collection
WASHINGTON (AP) — Marilyn Monroe has a unique place
in history and now will be remembered in wax at the Madame
Tussauds museum in Washington.
The museum is unveiling its newest wax figure. It will be displayed initially at Washington's O Street Museum in The Mansion on O Street.
An exhibit about the late Hollywood star will also include a
pin-up calendar and photographs, as well as a shampoo advertisement and lunchbox featuring Monroe.
Monroe died 51 years ago but remains a pop culture phenomenon. She was well known for films that included "Some
Like it Hot," ''Gentlemen Prefer Blondes" and "How to Marry
a Millionaire." But for younger generations, Monroe remains an
icon of style.
In Washington, a mural serves as a tribute to Monroe in the
Woodley Park neighborhood.
Bloopers from a Classic Movies
(AP) - In A Christmas Story (1983). This movie, which
was set in the 1940's, contains a few modern day errors.
1980's cars can be seen in some of the street shots, while
modern day logos can be seen on some of the toys in the
movie's fictional toy shop. And according to IMDB.com, if
you look closely in the class room scenes, one of the boys in
the class is wearing a 1980's style "Dukes of Hazzard"
watch.
Actress Melinda Dillon, who played Ralphie Parker's mom
in this hilarious movie, is involved in a couple of bloopers
in the film. In the scene where Mrs. Parker "accidentally"
breaks her husband's hideous leg lamp, she holds the broken
leg in her arms and it's in three distinctly broken pieces. After
Mr. Parker (Darren McGavin's character) screams "What
broke?" Dillon is shown holding one single, vertically broken piece. Also, Melinda Dillon's name is misspelled "Dillion" in the ending credits of the movie. Talk about not giving credit where credit is due!
In A Christmas Carol (1951). One of the most remade
Christmas movies of all time, the 1951 version starring Alistair Sim as Scrooge is still the best. One big blunder though.
Near the end of the movie, when Scrooge looks at himself in
the mirror, several members of the movie's camera crew are
clearly visible in the mirror as well.

$300k Ferrari run over by delivery
truck backing up
NEW YORK - (AP) - If you think you had a bad day at the office,
check out the misfortune of one delivery truck driver who accidentally
backed into a $300,000 Ferrari FF on Columbus Avenue in New York
City. The driver of the Baldor Foods, Inc. truck told bystanders he “didn’t see nothing” as he put the truck in reverse, crushing the hood of the
extremely streamlined FF model. Nobody appeared to be hurt physically. And, in case you were wondering who was behind the wheel of
the Ferrari, it wasn’t the owner, but a paid driver. Hopefully both gentlemen can smooth things over with their bosses.
