Hat Juggling

Here are two jugglin g moves with hats .
They can be don e with a standard top
hat, collapsable or solid, or with an,similar type of hat that has a firm
brim.
No.I: The High Hat Twirl
Begin by holding the back part of th e
hat (the short part of the oval) by th e
brim, with the fing e rs on top , outside of
the brim, and the thumb fa cing toward
the leg. The hand is slightly away from
the side of the bod y down by the kne e.
You will swing the hat from the kn ee
upward ove r your h ea d , to a pos ition a t
about 11 o'clock if you were looking at
your body from the left side. During
this swing, the brim of the hat will
twirl once in a • clockwise direction
around th e tips of the fingers .
Hold the hat as in Figure I. Swing
the hat up, not with a hard toss, but
with enough momentum to cause it to be
temporarily weightless at the top of th e
swing. Don't let go at this point (Figur e
2), but do initiate the twirl.
At this moment , the thumb flicks the
hat so it begins to twirl around the
fingers in a clockwise direction. Figure
3 shows the mid-point , and Figure 4
shows the hat as it completes th e trip
around the fingers .
You will notice there is a r eal knack
to all the moves in this series. Thev
will seem very difficult at first; bu.t
with repeated effo rt they will become
second nature . Also, in this particular
move you will notice the hat does
travel around the fingers , bringing the
hat to rest in an off-centre positi on.
You might want to compensate for this
to begin with, but it re all y isn't a
problem once you master the mo ve. Ac tually, it puts th e hat in prope r posi tion to pla ce directly on the head at
the e nd of the twirl, as Lance Burton
doe s to end his act .
Some peopl e might find it easier to
begin if the index finger , and n ot the
thumb, is on the inside of the ha t to
cause the hat to twirl a round th e middle finger.
No.2: The Hand Flip
Figure I shows the starting grip on th e
hat , with the thumb along the inside of
the brim, and the four fingers on the
outside. The hat is held at the small
part of the oval down by the side of
the body.
Twist the hand at the wrist in a
clockwise direction, stopping at the
point shown in Figure 2. Yo u wil l see
the hat at its peak position on the flip
before the hand has to let go of the
hat , al lowing it to continue to fl o p
around on its own momentum.
®
Figures 3 and 4 show the hand has
released the hat and regrabbed it after
it has flipped around the hand once. At
this point you will be holdin g the hat
with the top facing the opposit.e di rection than when yo u start.ed. That is .
th e fingers will be inside the cro wn of
the hat, with the thumb on the outside
of the brim. You ca n now continue with
anothe r flip of th e hat that follows basically the same mot io n .
4
•
Figures -! , 5 and 6 show how th e hat
is caught and held after the fi r st Hand
Flip , and th e wrist turning clockwise
again until the position shown in Figure
5. At this point t he hand must once
a gain let go of the hat, allowing it to
continue its flip around the hand as a
res ult of the momentum generated by
the wrist turn. The hand the n regrabs
th e hat as shown in Figu re 6 . 1; s in g
this Hand Flip, yo u will be abl e to do
co ntinuous flips around the hand with
the hat .
It is poss ib le, with a s li ght regrip on
the position of the brim after the High
Hat Twirl , you will be able to go
straight into the two Hand Flips just
described for a short sequence.
There will be more hat tricks in the
next issu e of f\'askade.

Let the Train Take the Strain!
Any unic.vclist will be familiar with the
problem of trai-elling by commuter train
with a uni. There you are. in front of
the ticket m,qchine, wondering where
they 'Fe

the
button marked
"unicycle ticke ts ". In order to solFe this
problem , we wrote the following Jetter
to the Stutrga rr .o ffice of German Federal Railways. The ,q nswer we recei1i ed
not only sol\led our own problems but
might also be of inrerest to Mr. and Ms.
A llerage - and to Kaskade readers.

Re: Anomalies regarding carriage of
unicycles by rail
Dea r Sirs ,
We are a juggling duo and have recentl y
pur chased unicycles. As we often take
the lo cal train to Stuttgart and would
not want t o leave our unicycles behind,
we are now faced with the problem of
dete rmining th e correct fare for transporting the unicycles.
Should we pay:
a) according t o th e number of wheels;
i.e . one bic yc le ticket for two unic yc les,
or
b) according to the number of saddles ;
i.e. two bicycle ti ckets for two unic y -
cles, or
c) according to handlebars; i.e . nothing
at all?
The following points might be taken
into consideration:
a) Unicyclists travelling alone would in
this case have to purchase half a
ticket , whereas a child with a tricycle
would require one and a half, or two if
he or she were driving a pedalcar.
b) In this case tandem riders would
have to purchase two bicycle tickets ,
whereas a damaged bicycle with no
saddle would require no ticket at al I.
c) This is the answer we would of
course prefer!
We would be grateful if you could
give us a speedy reply in order to
avoid unnecessary complications at the
ticket barrier.
Yours faithfully,
The Foxtrotts
From the Stuttgart Transport Authority
VVS:
Dear Mr . Gackle,
German Federal Railways have asked me
to reply to your letter as the VVS is
responsible for setting fares for local
trains .
It is with some envy that we have
studied the various possibilities suggested in your questions concerning the
fares for carrying cycles. We would
List of Addresses
rn so mu ch as I have been maintaining
an address list of jugglers in Europe for
severa l ye ars now and am often asked
abo ut address es of jugglers by people
looking for juggle rs in their area , I
have thou ght about making an official
co nta ct ser v ice available. It would be
co nceived in such a way that those
peo ple who do not wish to hav e their
addr ess in such a contact list could
ha ve it removed should it already be
pr es ent. In addition . anyone wishing to
req ues t information from the listing
wo uld ha ve t o be willing to add their
address (a nd telephone number , if they
req uest t e leph one information) to the
listin g.
T hi s would mak e it poss ible for the
now growing number of jugglers to reach
oth e r jugglers in their area or in a new
a rea s h ou ld they expect to be travelling
or mo v in g to a new area~ Obviously, t.he
peo pl e who would most be helped by
such a service would be new jugglers
wh o h ave n eve r been to a convention
and are not on the inside track of the
juggling sce ne. As a general rule I tend
to be ca lled or written by people who
wish to learn of other jugglers in their
ar ea
and
who have
only recently
learned to juggle: either on their own ,
with a book or at school in a physical
ed ucation c lass.
Obviously the information is privileged and not going to be available in
some massive on -lin e database open to
anyone who wishes it. Requests are
screened by myself and answered personally . Addresses are normally avail.able only to people leaving their address and then only from a small crosssection of the database, i.e. people in a
given small area. Answers are also only
sent to people who supply a stamped ,
self-addressed envelope with their request or e lse who reach me by telephone .
The only other group who normally
has access to this information is the
organizers of juggling conventions so
that they can send out information on
what is coming up to th e people most
likely to want to know , the jugglers in
Europe.
I can be reached at the following
address:
Neil Robinson, Bartelsweg 5. D-6930
Eberbach-Brombach, West Germany, Tel.
(06272) 785 or 3060
Please remember one thing. Despite
the very real danger of Big Brother and
his various clones, this is not intended
to be a service of the government or its
bureaucracy and anyone who does not
wish to participate does not have to.
The name of everyone who is presently
regist e red in the database will be made
public , possibly through Kaskade, by
printing their name and the city they
live in, and if you should see your
name there and wish it to be removed
or notice that your address may be
wrong or decide you want to participate
and want the information on file to be
current, please write and let me know.
I am also interested in the opinions
of the juggling populace on how best
they think this should be implemented
and if it should be done at all. I have
been performing this service on an informal basis for some time now and although it has not been extensively used
it may well become worthwhile. For
those of you who received information
dearly like to impose some of the suggested fares,
but are unfortunately
bound by the regulations , whi ch are as
follows :
We charge a fare for transporting
"normal" cycles, which are defined as
"single-seater bicycles". All other cycles, e.g. unicycles, tricycles, economic
cycles and lunar cycles may be carried
free of charge if the general regulations
concerning the transport of goods are
not infringed.
Unicycles whose saddles are not
mounted so high as to require a chain,
but whose pedals are directly attached
to the hub of the wheel, clearly cannot
be described as "bulky" (under the
terms of paragraph 1 of the regulations). However , the terms "endanger or
inconvenienc e other passengers" and
"unpackaged and unprotected objects
liable to cause injury to other passengers" may apply here . We therefore
recomm e nd that yo u protect the pe dals
of the unicycles and transport th e ve hicles safely, i.e. hold on to them during the journey .
We would like to wish you and yo ur
partner man y pleasant journ eys on our
trains , and much success with yo ur
performances.
Yours sincerely,
Stuttgart Transport Authorit y
Fares Department
on the convention at Saintes, you may
well have already benefitted from the
existence of this service.
Good juggling for all and fun in the
process is the objective I am striving
for.

Eine umfassende >Schule des Jonglierens<, eine
Anleitung , di e iibe r die allgemeinen Hinweise
hinausgeht , suchte man bislang vergebens . In
dem nunmehr vorgestellten Buch hat der Autor
D ave Finnigan alles zusammengetragen und
systematisch geordnet , was e r in langen Jahren

Wer

in. Th e agonal (death struggle) tendency
has not disappeared, but it has been
pushed int o the background . Open asse rtion of th e prin c iple of excelle nce is
becomin g less and less popular, but it
is still p rese nt in the form of selfimpo sed compulsion , in which it is
negated. A look at the juggling boom
may sen c to illustrate this aspect of
disguised co mpetition. In certai n respects, th e juggler represents a new
social type. Superficially he is the embodiment. of th e drop-out type who
co ns cio usly rejects a s yste m geared to
hi gh-p e rforman ce and norms. But there
is nothing about him to suggest an apathetic
"co uldn 't-care-less"
attitud e.
The juggler is creative, imaginativ e ,
disciplined and gifted . He works in a
go al-directe d way on a project of selffulfilment in which all his e nergy flows
t hrough his flying objects.
To a high degree, the art of jugglin g
possesses a meditative quality. That
widespread ph e nomenon of our time, th e
ina bility to co n ce ntrate, is not true of
t he pra ctising jugg ler . The fact that he
ta ught hims el f to juggle is often an
important part of the juggle r's self- image . Basically , that is the only possible
way one . can lea rn to juggle: from one's
own mistak es and persistent practice.
Eac h ne w trick requires an ex tremel y
high level of frustration tolerance. Yet
it is pre c isely this kind of autodidactic ism that expresses what is becoming an
increas in gly widespread attitude to life:
"I did it! " Juggling requires a degree of
self- co ntrol ve rging on the autistic. On
a global so ci al level, it exp resses th e
attitude to life gai n ed from ha v ing
achieved something outside the confines
of any s c hools or social norms. It is a
monadic
co nsciousness that attaches
le ss and less importance to measuring
one's pow e r with others. It is enough to
have proved it to OJleSelf.
The juggler on the street co rner and
in the pedestrian precincts is a product
of our leisure and unemployment cultur e. It is important for him to be able
to let go of things and yet still retain
the feeling of having everything under
co ntrol. He is trying to ach ie ve someth in g in co mparable. What appears to the
outside obs e rve r to convey relaxed imperturbability is nonetheless narcissistic
self-imposed compulsion. His filigree art
e le vates the juggler in an a lmost magica l way above the banality and competitiveness of eve ry day life - but h e
is brought back down t o e arth when
another juggl e r appears in the same
pedestrian pr ec inct .

._., Festival
London
The new London festival of New Ci r cus
is a 17-day event (29 .July to I..\ ..\u gust) celebrating the re-invention of
circus as a focus on physical skills in a
theatrical setting
a modern circus
without performing animals.
The festi va l takes place in Jubilee
Gardens , next to the Royal festival
Hall, just a few hundred , ·ards from the
site of London's
first
ever
circus.
opened by Philip Astley in 1768.
for the duration of the Festh·al, Jubilee Gardens will be transformed into a
magical "circus village"
a crowded
canvas sky lin e of big-tops. mini-tops ,
magnificent outdoor flying trapeze rigs,
marquees and stalls. It will be a riot of
colour
and - act1v1t1y
with
jugglers .
c lowns,
musicians ,
acrobats,
street
artists, flocks of stilt -bird s and giant
puppets animating the beautifully illuminated
walkways,
tents,
bars
and
cafes. It will be a wonderful and exciting place to be.
To enthuse those new to circus skills
the festival will be initiating a series
of exciting activities in schools , sports
halls , arts and community cent r es in the
three months leading up to the Festival
itself. For example, there will be two
twelve-week courses
at the Central
London YMCA, drawing kids from all
Camden -bas ed secondary schools, three
twelve -we ek courses in Lambeth and
classes at Camden's Working Men's Club,
, The Ova l House and at Battersea Ar ts
Ce ntre.
The
l2th International folk & fool
Festival is taking place on 20 and 2 1
August in Schlo(lhof \loers. A small but
beautiful fringe festival for the independent
theatre ,
comedy and
music
scene, which has featured ove r 300
artists from all over the world, many of
whom were JUGGLERS - Dr. Hot & Neon,
Leo Bassi, lnstitut de Jonglage and
many more (you forgot to mention Die
Kapriolen and High fidelity - Eds.).
This year, as well as Theatre de Mie
de la Pain , Stoppok Band, Shooting
Party and John Lee, jugglers Mr. Adams
There are very few training opportunities
for
circus skills
in
Britain.
France has no fewer than seventy-two
state-subsidized circus schools whereas
Britain boasts only one. In order to foc us on this issue and to set the course
for change, the Festival is o rgani zing
the CONFERENCE ON NEW CIRCUS which
will take place at Riverside Studios in
September this year.
Groups in vited by the festival will be
giving workshops and classes as well as
performances. This training programme is
as important to the festival as the
shows themselves. There will be opportunities for kids to get involved in New
Ci rcus through free introductory sessions, also a wide range of classes for
those who've already discovered how
exciting circus skills can be and at top
level , a rare opportunity for professionals to work with some of the world's
best trainers.
The Groups participating are:

Re: Whose Trick?
Sandra Gies read about Erik's Trick
Patent Agency in Kaskade No. I I , and,
not knowing Erik, took it seriously. She
wrote the following irate letter, and
after we straightened her out on the
joke, had no objections to ou r publishing it. "I don't mind looking a fool," she
writes , "as a matter of fact , I pride
myself as a professional in the field!"
What a can of worms you Eu r opean jugglers have opened here! I think it is
sad to try to claim ownership i:Jf tricks
in the juggling profession. I would like
to remind you that the International
Jugglers ' Association was founded 40
years ago as a distin ct fa ct ion from the
International Brotherhood of Magicians
to promote the art of juggling by
SHARING. The IBM had a policy which
only allowed certified professionals to
join and a demeanor of secrecy inv olv ing all skills, putting off those who
were trying to learn th e craft .
Now I'm not suggesting that. you adopt
the attitudes of the !JA, BL'T I would
like t o kn ow who you are going t o giv e
royalty fe es to for tricks that we re
developed by vaudevillians wh o are n o
long e r around . Wh o re all y own s a trick
anyway ? What is n ext? Will you try to
patent jokes ? Words? Looks ? A way a
hand is held in th e air ?
I am n ot a pr ofessional ju ggle r and
would not kno1r an y thing about the
dis cipline if ce rtain professionals had
not shown me the basi cs and co ntin ue
to help me out as my ability grows. One
of the best thin gs about learnin g to
juggle has for me been the e agern e ss of
others wh o make their living at it to
show me what they kno w.
It see ms to me that a juggler pays in
learning the trick in the first place .
Many tri cks take tim e and ea rn est application ro be able t o perform reliabl y.
That tim e spent training is already an
invest ment. If this desi re to patent
tricks is out of fear of being surpassed
at one's own tri c k . perhaps it is up to
the c reator to work hard er to stay
ahead of the younger, stronger, and
more
imaginative
performers
that
perennially show up . Jugglin g is not a
uniqu e profession in this respect.
Th e best way to protect a trick you
ha ve created is by being the BEST performer of that trick. No-one ever said
it was going to be easy!

Re: Prench Translation I
It's a good idea . to have Kaskad e
translated into Prench . It shows that
you haven't forgotten the Prench juggle rs . Danke' I've corrected your letter
about the translation to help you improve your Prench. No. 11 is interesting, but contains too much advertising.

Re: Let it dr op !
Last time Danny Avruti ck wrot e a bigoted ri ght-wing lett e r to Kaskade I assumed yo u would be flooded with angry
re plies . None were published , par t ly
because the "silent majority'' of juggle rs
are lazy like me , and partl y because
yo u , the editors, didn 't want a long
slanging match. This time I must say
something in case people think that
Danny (a US emigre) is representativ e
of European jugglers .
I used to run a juggling business and
ha ve come into contact with many
hundreds of jugglers. The vast majority
ar e people who have a lifestyle outside
or on the edges of socie t.y . Buskers,
travellers, hi-ppies , fools , jest e rs , gyp sies, whatev e r you call them. Holy
Danny calls them "de ge nerate, rowd y,
vulgar and decadent". Wel l , let me tell
you, Danny, you're outnumbered. They
may not write to Kaskad e and a lot of
them don 't come t o conventions - they
are down in South e rn Europe busking in
September - but they are out there. I
know because I have had hundreds
through my house, sometimes busking in
town to earn the last few pennies for
their precious clubs, sometimes arriving
in their vans in the middle of the
night , sometimes sleeping on my floor
and hitchhiking away in the morning,
always haggling, often needing a bath,
sometimes having one too , thes e people
are the lifeblood of the juggling movement in Europe. If we exclude them from
our clea n , organized, sanitary co nv e ntions, then our association will become
enough. This is , of co urse, a pe rsonal
view, but I am fed up with being in
international contexts where eve ry one
speaks English
exce pt the Pren ch
participants. Languages are on ly learnt
by necessity - so let them experience
that!
