Hopi Origins May 2009
Painting by Michael Kabotie at Sunset Crater National Monument
Cover: Some spirits from the Hopi mythology depicted in the painting by Michael Kabotie at
Sunset Crater National Monument. In this painting the humpback of the fertility spirit Kokopelli
explodes with fire into the upper world. Eototo, leading spirit of the fire clan, associated with
fire, germination and light, holds the macaw, Kayaaro who stands for the rainbow.
The serpent Paaluluqang is shown rising up from the earth, his movements creating earthquakes
that give rise to volcanoes. People and animals gesture their fear of this volcanic explosion, fear
that gives rise to sacred ceremonies.
