Mahler’s Songs
MAHLER Kindertotenlieder
SCHUMANN Symphony No. 2
14th December 2013 (Sat) - 8.30pm
Gustav Mahler was fascinated, almost obsessed, with details of orchestration, both in his own works and
in those of others. He was a keen judge of what “worked” and what didn’t. To this end, listeners already
familiar with Schumann’s wonderful Second Symphony should find in Mahler’s revisions a wonderful
sense of discovery. Mahler the composer is also represented on the programme with his grief-laden
Kindertotenlieder (Songs on the Death of Children).

The Beatles achieved a level of celebrity and adoration never seen before or since in modern times.
They were more than a band. They symbolised an era, an essential part of our collective consciousness
of the 1960s - a time of hope and magic, of freedom and change, of challenge and conquest. The
heart of Beatledom is of course the music. So, come hear a selection of Beatles songs. Some of your
favourites are bound to be on this programme.

The Spirit of the Dance
KHACHATURIAN Masquarde
SCRIABIN Piano Concerto
RACHMANINOFF Symphonic Dances
3rd May 2014 (Sat) - 8.30pm
The spirit of the dance infuses two of the three works on this programme. Much of the music
Khachaturian wrote as incidental music for Lermontov’s play Masquerade is dance music.
Rachmaninoff’s Symphonic Dances are seldom danced, but their exceptionally brilliant orchestration
contributes significantly to making this one of the composer’s finest scores. In between comes Scriabin’s
early Piano Concerto, with its echoes of Chopin and Rachmaninoff.

Quintessence: Ramli Ibrahim and The MPO
21st June 2014 (Sat) - 8.30pm
Three seminal works of Debussy, Ravel and Stravinsky are re-envisioned by Malaysian dancer and
choreographer, Datuk Ramli Ibrahim. L’Apre Midi D’une Faune, Sheherazade and The Firebird represent
a tapestry of romantic and transcendent encounters with the strangely exotic in both dance and
music. Datuk Ramli Ibrahim, familiar to Malaysians not only for Indian classical dance but also for his
pioneering contemporary dance forays, choreographs to these well-known compositions. Datuk Ramli’s
choreography, inspired by Asian dance vocabularies will take the audience on a quintessence journey
where the colours and movement of Asian modern dance are infused with exalted sounds of these great
composers.
