„2011 konnten wir Österreich als Partnerland der
Tendence gewinnen. Dabei wird die Galleria 1
zum Zentrum für Inszenierungen, Präsentationen und Darbietungen. Designstudios aus
Österreich machen die Halle 8.0 zum Ziel für
Messe-Gourmets und gestalten Restaurants
und Cafés mit typischen Österreich-Thematiken wie Prater, Alpen oder Heuriger.“

What does Tendence 2011 offer visitors as an
order and trend platform?
“Tendence offers visitors the most international selection of products in
the autumn and, in addition to its long tradition, is characterised in
particular by a very large number of exhibitors and visitors from outside
Germany. This year, around 2,100 exhibitors from all
around the world are showing their latest products on around 130,000 square metres
(gross) of exhibition space in nine halls.
This is equivalent to the area of

products for wining and dining,
through to creative gifts for friends
and family.”
What are the focus points of
the special shows?
“This year, Austria has agreed to be the
Tendence Partner Country and Galleria 1 will be the focus
point for Austrian demonstrations, presentations and performances. Design studios from Austria have turned Hall 8.0
into a must for gourmet visitors by creating restaurants and
cafés with typical Austrian themes, such as ‘Prater’, ‘the
Alps’ and ‘Heuriger’.”

“IRON” combines functional and traditional styling with modern, unadorned design. The shape and

and drinking bowls. The handle on the pot and cup perfectly complements the architectonic design
vocabulary. Optic and haptic extremely stimulating, the relief frosting pays tribute to the past. In
short: An absolute treat for the hand and eye of all tea and Zen-loving minimalists.

Produktentwicklung und experimentellem Design neue Wege geht.
Story-telling designs!
As part of “Partner Country Austria”, alongside companies with a long tradition and artisans and
craft workers, young, design-oriented companies are also presenting themselves at Tendence.
We spoke to designer Julia Landsiedl, who is breaking new ground in strategic product development
and experimental design.
Frau Landsiedl, was zeichnet österreichisches Design gegenüber anderen Design-Stilen aus?
Österreichisches Design ist eine Mischung aus unterschiedlichen Einflüssen
und Stilen. Es verhält sich ein wenig so wie mit der österreichischen Küche,
die Elemente aus anderen Nationalküchen übernommen und etwas Eigenes
daraus gemacht hat. Im Zusammenhang mit österreichischem AutorenDesign gibt es zwei Begriffe, die immer wieder auftauchen: Charme und
Humor. Es gibt allerdings österreichische Designer, die weder das eine noch
das andere besitzen und trotzdem gute Sachen machen. Im Übrigen wird
von staatlicher Seite nicht nur reines Industriedesign gefördert, sondern
auch künstlerisch anspruchsvolles Design.
Welche Rolle spielt Tradition für Sie, auch im Verhältnis zu
Ihrer experimentellen Herangehensweise?
Tradition kann für mich sehr spannend sein, wenn sie über lange Jahre
gewachsen und für die Kultur einzigartig ist. Für mich spielt Tradition eine
große Rolle als Ausgangsmaterial für das Experiment. Nehmen Sie zum
Beispiel „Broken Porcelain“. Der Ausgangspunkt für die Serie war eine alte
Tasse mit einem Riss, die meine Schwester nicht mehr verwenden konnte,
aber auch nicht wegwerfen wollte. Hochwertiges Porzellan hat in Österreich eine lange Tradition und wird sehr geschätzt. „Broken Porcelain“ setzt
sich mit dieser Tradition auseinander. Die Serie fragt: Was ist für Menschen wertvoll? Wie gehen sie mit Verlust und Beschädigungen um? Die
konkrete Idee für die Serie kam mir, als ich in einem sonnigen Hof einen
glänzenden Mantelknopf fand. Ich behielt ihn, um den gebrochenen Deckel
meiner Zuckerdose zu fixieren. Seitdem sammele und verwandele ich
beschädigtes Porzellan. Es geht mir dabei nicht um ein zeitloses perfektes
Imperfektes, sondern um Gebrauchsspuren, an denen die Geschichte eines
Objekts sichtbar wird, um eine Narbe, die etwas erzählt.

Ms Landsiedl, what differentiates Austrian design from other
design styles?
Austrian design is a potpourri of different influences and styles. It’s a bit
like Austrian cuisine – the ingredients are absorbed from other national
culinary delights, and something especially individual is produced from
them. Two elements constantly put in an appearance with home-grown
Austrian design: charm and humour. There are, however, Austrian designers
that have neither the one nor the other – and still come up with the goods
anyway. And of course the state not only demands a pure industrial
design – it also wants an artistically demanding design.
What role does tradition play for you? With regard to your
experimental approach as well?
Tradition can be very exciting for me, when it has matured over many
years and is unique to the culture. For me tradition plays a big role as a
starting point material – as a base substance for my experiment. Take
“Broken Porcelain” for example. The starting point for the series was an
old cup with a crack, which my sister could no longer use, but didn’t want
to throw away. Top-quality porcelain has a long tradition in Austria and is
highly valued. “Broken Porcelain” goes toe to toe with this tradition. The
series asks: What do people value? How do we deal with loss and damage?
The specific idea for the series came to me when I found a shiny coat button in a sunny courtyard. I kept it to fix the broken lid of my sugar tin. Since
then I have been collecting and transforming damaged porcelain. For me it
is not about a timelessly perfect imperfection; it is more about the traces
of usage, which visualize an object’s history – a scar that relates a story!

Wie setzen Sie Storytelling bei der Produktentwicklung ein?
In den modernen Konsumgesellschaften gibt es viele Produkte, die sich
funktional kaum unterscheiden. Deshalb wird der emotionale Mehrwert
wichtig. Durch Geschichten kann man Gefühle ansprechen, Produkte differenzieren und etwas vermitteln, das über Einzelobjekte hinausgeht. Bei einer
Studie in Kalifornien ging es z. B. darum, Farben für das Gehäuse einer mobilen Festplatte zu definieren. Aus den wochenlangen Mix-Experimenten sind
keine bloßen Farbwerte hervorgegangen, sondern eine Farbreise, „Around
the world, across the rainbow“ hieß sie – von Kalifornien bis ans Ende des
Regenbogens, mit Tönen wie „super sunny yellow“ oder „raindrop blue“. Da
hat man doch gleich ein Bild oder eine sympathische Geschichte im Kopf.
How do you apply storytelling to your product development?
There are many, many products in the modern consumer society that differ
very little in their functional purpose. This makes the emotional added
value important. Stories allow us to address feelings, differentiate
between products and relate something that goes beyond the scope of
individual objects. A study in California, for example, focused on defining
colours for the housing of a mobile hard disk drive. The weeks of mixing
experiments didn’t produce mere colour values, but rather resulted in a
colour journey called “Around the world, across the rainbow” – from California to the end of the rainbow, with shades such as “super sunny yellow”
or “raindrop blue”. I mean, a beautiful story is just inevitable here, isn’t it!?
Im Rahmen von „Partnerland Österreich“ gestalten Sie in
Halle 8.0 ein „Wiener Kaffeehaus“. Wie vermitteln Sie den
Besuchern das besondere Flair dieser berühmten Institution?
Es wäre naheliegend gewesen, ein paar auffrisierte Bugholz-Stühle mit
Tischen mit Marmorfuß und einem Stephansdom-Panorama zu kombinieren.
Jeder hätte gewusst, was damit gemeint ist. Das wäre mir (und wohl auch
den Besuchern) allerdings zu wenig gewesen. Beim „Frankfurter Wiener
Kaffeehaus“ habe ich deshalb erzählerischer gearbeitet. Es handelt von den
Wienern, davon, wie sie im Kaffeehaus sitzen, dort hinter einer Zeitung hervorlugen, beobachten und sich beobachten lassen. Diese Episode wird mithilfe kleiner Details erzählt – Spiegeln, verchromten Kugeln und Rahmen.
Man kann sich dort hinsetzen und das erleben.
As part of “Partner Country Austria” you designed a “Vienna
café” in Hall 8.0. How do you get the special charm of this
famous institution across to the visitors?
Well, it would have been obvious to just combine a few touched up bentwood chairs with tables with marble feet and a St. Stephan’s Cathedral
panorama. Everyone would have known what was intended. But this
wouldn’t have been enough for me (nor for the visitors, no doubt). So with
“Frankfurter Wiener Kaffeehaus (Frankfurt-Vienna café)” I worked in a
more narrative way. This is about the Viennese, about how they sit in their
café, investigating from behind a newspaper, seeing and being seen. This
episode relates with the help of little details – mirrors, chromed orbs and
frames. This is where you have to sit down and experience!

Meisterstücke von Lambert
Um den außergewöhnlichen Schliff der drei „Sarto“ Vasen zu erzielen, wird im Vorfeld
schwarzes Opaqueglas mit Klarglas verschmolzen und mundgeblasen. Per Schliff von
Hand wird dabei ein Großteil des schwarzen Glases vom Vasenkörper so entfernt, dass
nur noch das das dekorative Streifendekor sichtbar bleibt. Die Klarglasflächen werden
abschließend noch satiniert. Es entsteht ein besonderer Kontrast, der die klassische
Vasenform betont. Auch mit den „Colette“-Gefäßen demonstriert Lambert hohe Handwerkskunst. Zunächst wird Stahlblech von Hand getrieben und mit einer feinen Hämmerung versehen, bevor es mit feinem Silber veredelt wird. Für die matte Oberfläche ist der
genaue Grad an Feinpolierung entscheidend.

To achieve the exceptional finish of the three “Sarto” vases, black opaque glass is first
melted and hand-blown with clear glass. Finished by hand, a large part of the black
glass is taken from vase bodies, so that only the decorative stripe pattern remains visible. The clear glass surfaces are then also satinised. The result is a superb contrast that
emphasizes the classic vase form. Lambert also demonstrates top quality handcraft with the “Colette” range.
Sheet steel is first wrought by hand and awarded a fine
hammering before being beautified with fine silver. The
exact level of fine polishing is critical for the matt surface finish.

Handwerkskunst aus Südtirol
Handicraft from South Tyrol
Geboren am 15.02.1961 in St. Ulrich, lebt und
arbeitet Carl Moroder in seinem Geburtsort,
im schönen Dolomitental Gröden. Seine nunmehr 15-jährige Tätigkeit als Bildhauer verrät
Moroders Stilrichtung; eng verbunden sind in
seinen Werken das „Schöne“ und „Elegante“
mit den starken Gefühlen wie die Liebe und
die Geborgenheit. Diese Elemente fand er
in den Werken des Wiener Jugendstilmalers
Gustav Klimt wieder.
Der Familienbetrieb Leo Moroder entwirft
und produziert schon seit über 40 Jahren
Weihnachtskrippen, Engel, Madonnen, religiöse und profane Skulpturen jeder Art
und Größe. Devotionalien und Kirchenbedarf höchster Qualität, 100 % aus Gröden,
Südtirol.
Individuelle Einzelanfertigungen aus verschiedenen qualitativ hochwertigen Materialien. Alle Modelle sind gesetzlich geschützt.
Carl Moroder was born on February 15, 1961,
in Ortisei, a small town amidst beautiful Val
Gardena, in the Dolomites region; he lives
and works here. He has been sculpting for 15
years and establishing and refined his own
style over time: his works combine beauty and
elegance with strong sentiments, such as love
and security. His style reflects elements from
works by the famous Viennese “Art Nouveau”
painter, Gustav Klimt.
Leo Moroder‘s family business has been designing and producing Christmas mangers,
angels, Madonnas as well as religious and
profane sculptures of any type and size for
over 40 years now. Religious articles and
church interiors in highest quality, 100% from
Val Gardena - South Tyrol. Personalized individual items made from different materials.
