Colton High Football Captures CIF Central Division Title
By: Cindy Rhodes
Editor
When the Lakers won the
NBA Title, the city of Los
Angeles threw them a parade.
Ditto when the San Francisco
Giants won the World Series.
In that tradition, the city
of Colton is throwing its local
sports heroes a big parade too.
Colton High’s football team
defeated Moreno Valley Rancho Verde High, 17-7, Friday
night.
The victory marked a number of firsts for the Yellowjackets:
It was their first CIF
•
title in 32 years, having last
won it all in 1978
It was the first title
•
for first-year head coach Rick
Bray
Weather permitting, the
victory parade is scheduled for
Saturday at 10 a.m.
The parade will start at
Colton Middle School, 670 W.
Laurel Street, and will head
south on Rancho Avenue about
1 ½ miles to Colton High.
Once there, a luncheon will
be held in the gym for the
players and their families. The
day will be sponsored by Ashley Furniture, Summit Career
College and Stater Bros.
“That’s what’s nice about
being a one-horse town,” Bray

said to The Press-Enterprise
in reference to the city having just one high school. “The
kids deserve it; they did all the
work. They deserve anything
coming to them.”
Former head coach and current athletic director Harold
Strauss handpicked Bray as
his successor. Bray had been
on the Yellowjackets coaching staff since 1985, with the
exception of four years at San
Gorgonio High.
Two of his sons, offensive
coordinator Rich Bray and
running backs coach B.J. Bray
are on his coaching staff, along
with Chris Mailo, Reuben Morales, Moses Rodriguez and
Misi Fetuuaho.
Although Colton (11-3)
boasts a balanced offense,
running back Tyler Ervin
made the difference in the
playoffs. The senior back
rushed for
nearly 900 yards in the
team’s four playoff games,
including 44 carries for 168
yards in the final.
The Yellowjackets weren’t
considered title contenders
after a third-place finish in
the San Andreas League, but
they were without Ervin for
four weeks as he nursed an
injury.
The title is the sixth CIF
title in school history.
City Fires Back in Longtime Colton School Board
Union Contract Talks
Member Ray Abril Dies
By: Cindy Rhodes
Editor
Without divulging any confidential information, the city
of Colton has set out to dispel
any rumors and misconceptions regarding contract negotiations with the police and
fire unions in the city.
It is city policy not to respond to any media reports of
negotiations, as it believes in
the confidentiality of all employees. Yet, the city council
approved a news release to
discuss, in general terms, its
negotiations in dealing with
a budget shortfall in excess of
$5 million.
In the wake of potential
layoffs, the Colton Police Officer’s Association has come
out strong in the media, making its case to the public. They
have held town hall meetings
and started a website to get
their message across.
Union president Greg Castillo has said the city’s safety
will be in jeopardy if the proposed layoff of 16 officers
comes to fruition.
Last week, the city rejected
a proposal by the police union
to take $1 million in concessions to help the department
avoid layoffs. It has been projected that the city could lay

Ray Abril Jr. fondly known
as the mayor of south Colton
was likened to “EF Hutton”
because when Abril talked,
people listened.
Abril passed away early
Tuesday morning. He was 78.
Reverently, businessmen,
politicians and friends alike
called Abril a mentor. And
many admitted that his wisdom could never be replaced.
A board member and past
president of the Colton Joint
Unified School District from
1973 to 2001, many credit
Abril with putting an end to
discrimination against Latinos in Colton. He ran for the
school board because he had
six children and wanted to
oversee their education, but
soon
realized
he must protect
and educate all
children “which
was the greatest
accomplishment
of my life” he
said in an interview last year.
Pat Nix, a
school
board
member
with
Ray for over 16
years, said “He
was a mentor for
me and he taught
me a heck of a
lot about how the school system works. He will be missed
by our entire family.”
Recently, he was honored
to have the new high school
in Grand Terrace named after
him. Despite the controversy
Ray Abril Jr.
that led to the name change of
Grand Terrace High School at
the Ray Abril Jr. Educational
Complex, he told the city of
Grand Terrace that he was
honored to have his name on

Resident Questions Intent, Colton HS Football Success
Integrity of City Council
Extends to Community
Following Friday’s historic victory of the Colton
High School Yellowjackets in the CIF-SS Central
Division title game, I would like to congratulate
the players and coaches on their victory and on the
tremendous amount of hard work and dedication
required to make such an achievement.
The teamwork, focus and dedication required to
distinguish you as the very best from among an
entire division of strong, formidable opponents is
something they will long be remembered for, not
only at Colton High School, but throughout the
community.
And besides playing great football, our players
also conducted themselves with good sportsmanship, which is something of which I am equally
proud.
I also want to thank the many supporters whose
spirit and dedication matches that of the players,
including the cheerleaders and band.
We as citizens and voters have certain rights.
WRONG! Not in Colton.
It is pretty sad when the Brown Act and Freedom
of Speech is totally violated and nothing will be done.
Why you ask, when tax payers dollars are being used
to fly Baca … from Washington to swear in the trash
now running Colton and then back.
So glad my money is being spent so wisely.
I like how when someone screams recall and attempts to leave, only to be stopped by a certain council member who mind you claims to have so many
back problems, but she sure jumped out of that chair
and darted out the door.
Voters and citizens of Colton get ready to go back
to the days of corruption. We can already see the
writing on the walls.
Soon that will be next – no editorials.

Resident
And of course, without the support of our parents, nothing could happen.
I would also like to thank the legions of individuals and organizations from the community who
supported our team Friday.
Thank you to the representatives from the city
of Colton, including the police, fire and electric
utility departments, for escorting our players from
the field to the freeway.
Thank you also to Stater Bros. for providing a
truck for the escort.
And finally, thank you to the Colton Chamber of
Commerce for planning a special parade at 10 a.m.
Saturday on Rancho Avenue.
It is wonderful to see the community embrace
our students for what certainly will be one of many
victories.
Editor’s Note: If Saturday’s parade is postponed due to weather, contact Laura Morales at
the Chamber office (909) 825-2222.

Charitable Giving to American Cancer Society Gives Holiday Cheer
As budgets are still a concern and the holidays are here
the American Cancer Society
– which has provided free services and created a world with
more birthdays to tens of millions of cancer patients over its
97-year history – is reaching
out for help.
“Cancer doesn’t wait and
we don’t want our patients to
have to, said Richard Jarvis,
volunteer chair of the American Cancer Society’s Inland
Empire Community Council.
“During the cooler months patients who lose their hair from
chemotherapy need wigs and
head coverings offered by the
Society both to maintain body
heat and to improve self-esteem. Many patients also need
our free door-to-door transportation every day. They
can’t just skip chemotherapy
or radiation because they don’t
have a ride,” Jarvis continued.
Although the Society has
been in existence for almost a
century and is one of the most
recognized and well-respected
charities in the world, there’s
a common misperception that
the Society is immune to economic challenges. Many mistakenly believe the Society
receives government funding
to sustain its groundbreaking
cancer research, prevention,
education and patient services
program. In fact, the American Cancer Society is supported almost entirely by private
donations.
“Even the smallest donation
makes a huge difference in the
life of a cancer patient,” Jarvis
emphasized. “No contribution
of money or time is too small.”
All donations are tax deductible.
As a donor to the American
Cancer Society you can provide support to cancer patients
and their families in your
community. With your gift,
the Society will be able to offer a broad range of essential
programs and services at no
cost to the recipient, such as:

Financial Focus: Three Keys to Estate Planning
By: Shawn Price
Financial Advisor
Edward Jones
When people hear the
words “estate planning,” they
often assume it’s an activity
only for retirees or near-retirees. But if you have a family,
it’s never too soon to create
your estate plan.
Of course, estate planning
can seem like a daunting
task. But you’ll find it easier
to handle if you break it down
into three key areas: distributing your assets, protecting
your family and reducing estate taxes. Let’s look at these
topics:
• Distributing your assets
— Obviously, it’s essential
that you let your family know
just how you’d like to see
your assets distributed, and
to whom. At the very least,
you’ll need to draw up a will.
If you were to die without
one, the state could end up
distributing your resources,
and it might do so in a way
you wouldn’t have wanted.
But even a will may not be sufficient. Many people design a
living trust, which provides
them with more flexibility in
distributing assets — for example, you could direct your
living trust to disperse assets
to children or grandchildren
at specific ages — and allows
assets to be distributed without going through the timeconsuming, and public, probate process.
• Protecting your family
— Estate planning isn’t just
about dollars and cents — it
also involves taking the necessary steps to preserve the
welfare of your family if you
are not around or become incapacitated.
Consequently, you’ll need
to name a guardian for your
minor children — someone
who can step in and raise
them should anything happen to you and your spouse.
And when your children are
adults, you’ll want to help
them with decisions that
could prove agonizing. For
example, by creating a living
will, you can state whether
you want your life prolonged
if you ever face a terminal illness or catastrophic brain injury and are no longer able to
make decisions for yourself.
And by drawing up a health
care power of attorney, you
can name someone to make
health care choices for you if
you are unable to do so.
• Reducing estate taxes —
Depending on the size of your
estate, your heirs may never
have to worry about estate
taxes. But that’s hard to predict, especially given the fact
that federal estate laws have
gone through several changes
in recent years, and may do so
again.
Your best bet is to stay informed about the exemption
level — the amount you can
pass on to your heirs, free
of estate taxes — and look
for ways to reduce the size
of your taxable estate. You
could, for instance, make
charitable gifts, thus moving
these assets from your estate.
You may also want to consider arrangements such as an ir-
revocable life insurance trust
— under which you can transfer a life insurance policy out
of your estate and have the
trust distribute the proceeds
to the beneficiaries you’ve
chosen — or a credit shelter
trust, which allows both you
and your spouse to take full
advantage of both your estate
tax exemptions.
A trust can be a complex
instrument, so before establishing one, you’ll need to
consult with your tax and
legal advisors. In fact, you’ll
want to consult with them on
all aspects of estate planning.
It will take time and effort,
but it’s worth it to leave the
type of legacy you desire.
Edward Jones, its associates and financial advisors
are not estate planners and

advice. Please consult your
attorney or qualified tax advisor regarding your situation.
Vacant Freeway Lincoln Mercury Building Gets New Owner
Activity continues at the
San Bernardino Auto Center,
as Toyota of San Bernardino’s
president Cliff Cummings
has just acquired the building
that once housed the former
Freeway-Lincoln Mercury car
dealership, located at 1600
Camino Real.
Facing Interstate 215 at
the entrance to the city, the
former dealership consists of
three buildings, which sit on
a 3.31acre parcel of land and
employed approximately 45
people before ceasing its operations in the summer of 2008.
In a current state of disrepair,
the acquisition is yet another
sign of the revitalization underway at the San Bernardino
Auto Center.
“The location is in pretty
bad shape and will take some
time before we can actually make it functional,” said
Cummings. “If you want to
attract buyers, image is key

Stripped of everything
imaginable, amid a sea of
broken glass, restoration to
the dealership will begin immediately. Cummings predicts the dealership will be
operational by January 2011,
utilizing the space for vehicle
storage, display or perhaps
another franchise, highlighting it as an entryway into the
city.
With an increase of 17
percent in its workforce over
last year, Toyota of San Bernardino is set to add even

County Recorder Goes Live to Accept Documents Electronically
San Bernardino County
Recorder Larry Walker announced today that his office has implemented the
next generation of electronic
recording by electronically
accepting, recording, and returning property documents
from First American Title,
San Bernardino.
This state-of-the-art electronic recording delivery
system was designed and implemented by the California
Electronic Recording Transaction Network Authority
(CeRTNA) of which San Bernardino County is a founding
member.
CeRTNA was the first such
system approved by the California Attorney General’s office under the requirements of
the Electronic Recording Delivery Act (ERDA) of 2004,
as authorized by the enactment of Assembly Bill 578.
The San Bernardino County Recorder’s office received
formal approval from the state
Attorney General’s office to
launch their system as part of
the formal approval process
required for each participating county.
Prior to implementing the
new delivery system, San Bernardino County, as one of two
counties authorized to electronically record documents
on a pilot basis, implemented
a proprietary system which allowed San Bernardino County and associated submitters
to manage the increased volume experienced during the
real estate boom of the early
2000s without significantly
increasing workforce.
This new system will allow
authorized submitters within
the Title, Banking, Mortgage
Lending, and other associated
industries a unified means
to electronically submit land
record documents to county
recorders throughout the state
of California, thereby minimizing the time and expense
of developing a separate system in each county.
The CeRTNA system allows for highly-secure, more
accurate, and timely processing along with increased efficiency and flexibility in a
proven solution.
“The industry no longer
needs a different system for
each county where they record land record documents
electronically,” said De Ana
Thompson, Acting Assistant
Recorder.
“Since this system is based
on industry standards, submitters all over the state and
country can record through
a single portal connected to
many California county recorders who can then take
advantage of the many benefits provided by electronic
recording to include reduced
mailing and personnel costs.”
“Electronic recording is a
great advancement and costsaver for everyone involved,
especially due to the flexibility provided to the submitter
to manage their workflow
and thereby save costs,” said
Walker.
“This has been a vision of
mine to streamline policies
and procedures, while safeguarding our constituents’ records, and I am pleased with
the outcome.”
CeRTNA is a California
Joint Powers Authority (JPA)
organization made up of
County Recorders throughout the state, and was chaired
by San Bernardino County
Recorder Larry Walker from
2007 through December,
2010.
This JPA was created to
jointly develop, implement,
and maintain a secure system
for the electronic recording of
documents.
In addition to San Bernardino, current member
counties include El Dorado,
Fresno, Kern, Merced, Monterey, San Joaquin, Santa
Clara, and Santa Cruz.

Make the Holiday Season a Safe and Happy Time for Pets
The Humane Society of
the United States is reminding
people that as they celebrate
the season, many of the things
that make the holidays special
-- may also pose hazards for
our canine and feline friends.
The hustle and bustle of travel
and large gatherings, festive
food and beverage, and holiday
decorations and plants can pose
particular challenges for the
millions of families that include
pets.
With a few simple precautions, our pets can share this
special time with us safely. The
Humane Society of the United
States offers these tips to keep
our four-legged family members healthy and happy:
• A number of seasonal
plants are poisonous to pets if
nibbled or eaten, including ivy,
holly, mistletoe and others. For
more information, visit www.
humanesociety.org.
• Keep holiday decorations
away from pets. Tinsel, bows,
ribbons and wrapping paper can
be tempting chew toys for pets,
but can damage their digestive
systems. Remember to keep
tree ornaments high enough that
they’re out of your pet’s reach.
• Provide your pet with a quiet, out-of-the-way room during
holiday parties. Though some
pets may enjoy socializing opportunities, others will be overwhelmed by the excitement of a
party.
• As you enjoy candy and
other treats during the holidays,
please don’t share with your
pets. Chocolate can be, hazardous, but also watch out for xylitol, a common sweetener. And
individually-wrapped candies
are double troubles as some pets
might eat both the candy and
the wrapper.
• Avoid the urge to give your
pets table scraps, especially
bones. Bones easily splinter and
can cause serious health problems, even death.
• If you are planning to take
your pet with you when visiting
friends and relatives during the
holidays, be sure to contact them
in advance to find out if your pet
is welcome. Because of the excitement during the holidays, it
might be best to board your pet
or hire a reputable pet sitter instead.
• Don’t leave candles unattended. Pets may accidentally
knock them over and spill wax
or start a fire.
If you’re thinking about adding a pet to your family at this
time of year, choose adoption
and visit your local animal shelter. Wonderful dogs, cats, and
other pets are just waiting in
sheltersfor their second chance
and you can save a life.. Pet
stores and online animal dealers cater to impulse purchases
during the holidays and most
of their dogs come from puppy mills. Puppy mill dogs are
generally kept in overcrowded
cages with poor quality food, a
lack of socialization, minimal
medical care, and too many suffer from an array of immediate
veterinary problems and longterm genetic problems.
Finally, think twice before
giving an animal as a gift:
“The recipient of your furry gift
may not be ready for the commitment involved with the lifetime care of a pet,” says Betsy
McFarland, The HSUS’ senior
director, companion animals.
“Instead of a puppy among the
presents, give the gift of adoption. Many shelters offer adoption gift certificates so the recipient can be actively involved
in choosing the perfect pet who
will share their home for years
to come.”

Angels Announce 66ers 2011 Coaching Staff
New 66ers Manager Tom Gamboa, left, coached the
Arkansas Travelers.
The Los Angeles of Anaheim are putting Tom Gamboa
back in the manager’s seat,
assigning the former Major
League first and third base
coach to be the new skipper
of Inland Empire 66ers baseball.
Gamboa was named Manager December 7 by Angels
Director of Player Development Abe Flores.
The Inland Empire 66ers
new manager spent last season as the manager of the
Palm Springs Power in the
Southern California Collegiate Baseball Association.
Gamboa will be managing
in the Angels system for the
first time since 2005, when
he led the Arkansas Travelers
at the Class-AA level and for
the first time in the California League since he led the
Stockton Ports to the California League finals in 1985 (lost
to Fresno Giants 3 games to
2).
Dan Ricabal will return to
the Angels California League
affiliate as pitching coach in
2011.
It should be a happy return
to San Bernardino for Ricabal, who was a reliever for
the 1995 California League
Championship-winning San
Bernardino Spirit.
He was 4-1 with a 3.88
ERA in 43 appearances for
the ’95 Spirit, during which
he struck out 62 batters. His
slightly better, the constant
drizzle and frigid temperatures
pushed each team to the limit as
SBVC and the Chargers went
into the shoot out period tied

shootout differential.
In the Southern California
final, SBVC once again traveled
to Ventura. In 2009, SBVC fell
short of the state finals in the
same round at Ventura. Exacting a ton of revenge, SBVC defeated Ventura 4-2 to advance
to the state finals for the first
time in program history.
SBVC was the number one
seed from the south at the state
finals, hosted by College of the
Canyons. Facing off with Fresno City in the opening round,
SBVC bested the defense-oriented playing style of Fresno to
advance to the Championship
round.

during the Championship
match, the weather-related conditions seemed to benefit SBVC
more, as Santa Rosa made the
only mistake of the match, to
which SBVC capitalized, winning their first state title.

Damon Mashore will be
the hitting coach for the Inland Empire 66ers in 2011. A
Major League veteran with
the Angels and the Oakland

Mashore’s impressive playing accomplishments include
a home run off of future Hallof-Famer and 300-game winner Randy Johnson (hit June

Local Businessman Donates to Charities in Triplicate
It only takes a brief conversation with Jon Melzer to
understand the compassion
and commitment he has to
helping others better their circumstances, in whatever way
he can.
Melzer is the general manager of Print Promotions Plus,
a family-owned printing business based in Colton.
With 27 years of printing
experience, he believes that it
is his duty as a company and
individual is to give back, especially during such difficult
economic times.
“This is my community
too. I grew up right here in
this very area,” Melzer said.
“I believe that I am compelled
by God to serve others and
it’s good to give to the community. I always feel like I get
something back in return.”
As a co-owner of Print Promotions Plus, Melzer is a humanitarian who has worked
silently, assisting such organizations as TrinityYouth Services. Located in Colton, the
organization provides foster
care, mental health services,
therapy and homes for chil-

off up to 16 police and nine
firefighters and eight other
city employees to balance its
budget.
The new budget cycle begins July 1, 2011.
“The city has been meeting
in good faith for many months
with its various employee
unions to discuss new salary
and benefit terms needed to
help resolve these issues,” a
news release dated December
10 said. “The city council respects its employee rights and
believes it is important that
these negotiations occur confidentially between it and the
unions. Therefore, the City
Council will not respond in
like fashion by conducting its
negotiations through the me-
dren who have been victims
of abuse, violence, neglect and
abandonment.
Each year, he assists Trinity Youth Services during
their major fundraiser, the
Trinity Classic. An annual
golf tournament, the organization depends on this event to
raise much-needed funding
to support the multiple programs they offer throughout
the year.
“We have been doing business with Trinity for the last 27
years,” Melzer said. “They are
about helping families. They
were hit hard by the recession,
so more than ever they need
for companies like Print Promotion Plus to bridge the gap
where possible.”
Donating the printing of
programs and tee signs for
the Trinity Classic, Print Promotion Plus has become the
event’s media sponsor. In addition, the Melzer family has
made contributions to Trinity
Youth Services on an individual basis as well.
“Jon has been a long time
supporter of our organization,” said Vanessa Vizzard,
Trinity Youth Services Community Outreach Specialist.
“It is wonderful when you can
have support like this, during
such tough economic times.
Print Promotion Plus really
helped save the day for our
golf classic.”
To add to Print Promotion
Plus’s growing list of community activities, Print Promotions Plus has expanded efforts with the San Bernardino
County Museum to include the
annual Wildlife Art Festival.
The San Bernardino County
Museum Association produces the event, which was held
from November 20-21.
“This is our biggest event of
year,” said Jennifer Reynolds,
Media Specialist, San Bernardino County Museum. “We
have worked with Jon and his
team for three years and they
have always been very giving with their time and understanding of our budget woes.
They are truly wonderful.”
Now celebrating its 28th
year, the festival featured
more than two-dozen artists,
activities for the family and
the top entries for the 2010
dia or its website.
“The City does believe that
its citizens deserve accurate
information, however, and
therefore provides this statement to correct some of the
misinformation that has been
circulated.”
The city points out that no
action has been taken to lay
off employees in 2010, by the
former or current council. It is
only a possible scenario.
“We are 100 percent committed to avoiding layoffs and
maintaining public safety service levels if at all possible,”
said Mayor David Zamora. “As
mayor, I believe I speak for the
entire city council when I say
that we will not take any action which will compromise
the safety of our residents and
businesses.
“All employees should pay
their fair share of their retirement obligations, and we
thank those city labor groups,
including our firefighters, who
are bargaining in good faith
and respecting the confidential nature of negotiations, as
is contemplated by state law.”
A budget approved by the
previous council in June said

Those layoffs will be alleviated with concessions.
Still, the city faces a deficit
hovering near $6 million due
to the loss of a utility user’s

In addition, the city’s state-

Colton PD Offers Holiday Safe Shopping Tips
With the holidays upon us
shopping presents a unique
danger. Taking a few prevention measures can help keep
your holiday season joyous.
During this time of the year,
busy shoppers become vulnerable to criminal activity. Law
enforcement agencies throughout the nation provide essentially the same safety tips:
• Shop during daylight hours
whenever possible. If you must
shop at night, go with a friend
or family member.
• If you have to wait for a
ride, wait in a busy well lit
place.
• Dress casually and comfortably.
• Avoid wearing expensive
jewelry.
• Do not carry a purse or
wallet, if possible.
• Always carry your California driver license or identification card along with necessary
cash, checks and/or a credit
card you expect to use.
• Even though you are
rushed and thinking about several things, stay alert to your
surroundings.
• Avoid carrying large
amounts of cash.
• Pay for purchases with a
check or credit card when pos-
sible. Keep in mind that debit
cards may not carry the same
protections as regular credit
cards.
• Keep cash in your front
pocket.
• Notify the credit card issuer immediately if your card
is lost, stolen, or misused.
• Keep a record of all your
credit card numbers in a safe
place at home.
• Be extra careful if you do
carry a wallet or purse. They
are the prime targets of criminals in crowded shopping areas, transportation terminals,
bus stops, on buses and other
rapid transit.
• Avoid overloading yourself with packages. It is important to have clear visibility
and freedom of motion to avoid
mishaps.
• Beware of strangers approaching you for any reason.
At this time of year, “con-artists” may try various methods
of distracting you with the intention of taking your money
or belongings.
• If you find it necessary to
store your purchases in your
car, make sure that they are not
visible from the outside. Lock
your car and make sure the
windows are closed.
• If you are the victim of a
crime, report it to police immediately.
Many find it safer to shop
from the comfort of their own
home by doing their shopping
on the Internet. Although the
Internet has made it easier to
accomplish many things, it also
makes it easier for scammers,
con-artists, and other miscreants to carry out their virtual
crimes. If you find it necessary
to use a credit card online, refrain from using debit cards
that may not offer the same
protections.
Phishing scams trick the
intended victim into visiting a
fraudulent website disguised
to look like a valid ecommerce
or banking site. The victim
believes they are logging into
their real account, but in actuality the information they enter
into the fake site is being sent
to the scammers.
Greeting card scams occur
when an email pretending to be
from a friend or family member is received. Once opened
the recipient is lead to a booby
trapped web page that downloads Trojans and other malicious software onto the unsuspecting victims’ computer.

eagles in the San Bernardino
National Forest’s 32nd annual
winter bald eagle counts in the
San Bernardino and San Jacinto
Mountains on Dec. 18, Jan. 8,
Feb. 12, and March 12.
Concurrent Bald Eagle counts
are held at Big Bear Lake, Baldwin Lake, Little Green Valley
Lake, Lake Gregory, Lake Arrowhead, Lake Silverwood, and
Lake Hemet. This year we have
added Lake Perris State Park
Recreation Area. Volunteers
will be stationed at vantage
points around the lakes, where
they map and note any eagle
observations during a 1-hour
period on the Saturday mornings listed above. Observations
will be repeated monthly for simultaneous 1-hour census/mapping efforts December through
March.
“Through this method, the
Forest Service has acquired
information about areas eagles
use and fluctuations in population numbers,”said wildlife
biologist Marc Stamer. “There
is no experience needed for volunteers and this is a wonderful
opportunity to catch a glimpse

Eagle counts for this winter

check and take their portion,

funds to the new “employer.”
The check is bogus and will
bounce. The victim will be liable for the funds spent and

any service fees that result.
The reshipping and payment processing fraud places

The ‘Merriest Place on Earth’ Returns
By: Jules E. Beuck
Entertainment Writer
For most of the year Disneyland Resort is known as
the “Happiest Place on Earth.”
But from November 2 through
January 2 it becomes the “Merriest Place on Earth.” Holiday
ornaments are hung over both
parks and changes are made
on some rides to celebrate the
season.
For example, for the Haunted Mansion Holiday, a madcap
celebration is taking place as
the traditions of Halloween
and Christmas collide. The
ghoulish but well-meaning
Jack Skellington from the film
“Tim Burton’s The Nightmare Before Christmas” has
come to Haunted Mansion and
transformed it with his skewed
vision of the holidays.
“It’s a Small World” Holiday transforms “It’s a Small
World” into a worldwide celebration of the season, boasting
more than three hundred thousand glittering lights on its
facade. The usual theme song
for the ride is interspersed
with Jingle Bells.
The Christmas Fantasy Parade shows all the characters
baking or otherwise getting
ready for Christmas and ends
with a visit from the Jolly Old
Joke of the
Week
Write it Down
An elderly couple with
memory problems are advised
by their doctor to write notes to
help them remember things.
One evening, while watching TV, the wife asks her husband to get her a bowl of ice
cream. “Sure,” he says.
“Write it down,” she suggests.
“No,” he says. “I can remember a simple thing like
that.”
“I also want strawberries
and whipped cream,” she says.
“Write it down.”
“I don’t need to write it
down,” he insists, heading to
the kitchen.
Twenty minutes later he returns, bearing a plate of bacon
and scrambled eggs.
“I told you to write it down!”
his wife says. “I wanted fried
eggs!”
Elf himself as he rides along in
his sleigh.
Speaking of the Jolly Old
Elf, Santa Claus and his reindeer have returned to greet
Disneyland guests at Santa’s
Reindeer Round-up at Big
Thunder Ranch in Frontierland. On the day we were
there, we saw the reindeer but
only saw Santa in the parade.
Sleeping Beauty’s Castle
sports snow during the day
but at night it displays a magnificent array of holiday lights
that stretches all the way to
town square.
Also, at night is the marvelous “Believe in Holiday
Magic” fireworks show. The
fireworks display is immediately followed by snow on
Main Street, New Orleans
Square and “It’s a Small
World” plaza.
In town square is a sixty foot
Christmas tree that is impressive enough during the day but
really dazzles at night.
At Disney’s California Adventure, the iconic “CALIFORNIA” letters have been
transformed to appear as
swirling red and white peppermint sticks.
“A Bug’s Land” has been
transformed as Flik and his
bug buddies spread giant
Christmas lights and oversized ornaments throughout
their realm.
The holiday scene along the
Paradise Bay boardwalk includes a beautifully decorated
Christmas tree and lampposts decorated with seasonal
wreaths. Santa Claus will

these animals today,” continued Scott. “Of course, none of
these classic dinosaurs have

California, but don’t despair–
there are still lots of dinosaurs

are actually dinosaurs. So to
find dinosaurs, all you have
to do is look out your window.

America, explore why dinosaurs never really died out,
and share behind-the-scenes
stories about recent excavations of actual dinosaur fossils
here in southern California.

Get Moving To Treat and Prevent Arthritis
(ARA) - More than just
aches and pains, arthritis is a
chronic disease that damages
joints and can lead to loss of
function or disability. In fact,
it is the most common cause of
disability in the United States,
affecting 50 million Americans or 22 percent of the total
population.
For years it was believed
that people with arthritis
should not exercise because
movement could cause further damage to joints. Now,
physical activity is recognized
as playing an integral role in
the prevention and treatment

of arthritis. According to the
Arthritis Foundation, exercise
provides relief from pain, improves physical function and
quality of life, and delays the
onset of disability without
worsening symptoms or the
progression of the disease.
Unfortunately, the already
staggering social and economic impact of arthritis in the
United States is set to explode
in coming decades.
A new government report
found that the number of adults
with arthritis has increased by
almost 1 million since 2003 to
2005 and it’s estimated that
arthritis will affect 67 million
Americans in 2030.
The effects of arthritis can
be devastating, but self-management strategies such as
weight loss and increasing
physical activity can lessen
pain and improve function,
and may prevent or limit the
impact of arthritis on daily activities.

Move with others.
