TWENTY-FOURTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME
FROM FATHER GOLAS
I hope this summer was a time of vacation and renewal for
all. The weather provided abundant sunshine and warmth for
being outdoors. As fall begins, I would like to make you aware
of the projects the finance committee has been working on.
These projects were all reviewed and agreed upon by the finance committee and received the permission of Archbishop
Blair. The parish sold a piece of property to Colvest behind the
CVS next to the rectory. This undeveloped parcel was beyond
the sidewalk leading to Naubuc Green and was not considered
useful for any parish purpose because of the location. In addition, a parcel of land adjacent to the sidewalk was also sold to
Colvest. The parish received from the sale $ 215, 700 after the
disbursements and debits. This money is in an interesting bearing account and will be set aside for the replacement of the
parking lot by milling and paving. As was noted in our insurance inspection this past May 2016, “ the parking lot surface
shows signs of damaged , uneven sections. They recommend to
patch/fill/ repair uneven surface sections”. As you look over
the parking lot, you can see quite a few areas that need attention. The finance committee agreed that a complete resurfacing
is needed. The parish is considering working on this project in
late spring 2017, after Easter, First Communion, Confirmation ,
and other spring events.
The finance committee also requested permission from
Archbishop Blair to sell St. Paul Hall on Naubuc Avenue. This
permission was granted August 4. We presently are awaiting
appraisals for this commercial property before the Committee
will market it. The money from the sale of this property when it
occurs as was discussed at the Finance Committee, parish
council, and at the open parish meeting last September 2015
will be set aside for upgrades and improvements to our presently facility on Main St. There is a facilities committee presently organized to study and make recommendations about the
direction the parish needs to proceed in. They have been communicating to the parish through the bulletin about their progress. They will continue to keep you informed of their efforts.
I will also communicate about any proposals that are being
discussed that concern the Church, the South Wing, the Religious Education wing and surrounding property.
I would expect that there will more open parish meetings held
for your comments and suggestions as the Committee makes
progress and has more details to bring forth. At the present
time, we are still in early stages of considering what improvements we should consider.
Finally, in another August 4 letter, Archbishop Blair gave permission for the Rectory Kitchen to be renovated. This project
includes a 10x12 foot addition. The present kitchen maintains
the original design from an earlier time. There have been improvements added over time but the effect has not improved
the effectiveness of this space. New England Kitchen and Bath
is the contractor for this project. This project will provide more
room to work and space for dining for smaller meals. I hope
this is enjoyable fall season and look forward to seeing everyone at the parish picnic, Sunday September 18 after the 10:30
am Mass.
Classes begin the week of September
19th. You should receive an email
the week before with room assignment.
Confirmation Program: There will be a mandatory Parent Meeting on Sunday, September 11 at 5:45 in the South
Wing.
Opening Mass for Confirmation Students (9th & 10th
grade) will be on Sunday, September 18 at 4pm with
Youth Group to follow.

PRAYER SHAWL
Have you – or someone you know – been thinking about
becoming a Catholic? While it may seem strange that a
Catholic Church bulletin would ask readers if they’re
thinking about becoming Catholic – it’s really not odd at
all. Many non-Catholics join us for Mass on a regular
basis, attending with family members, friends, or even on
their own – and several who have become Catholic
through our RCIA (Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults)
program have, in fact, been coming to Mass for years.
Many parishioners were amazed a few years ago when a
man some saw as a “pillar of the church” became Catholic at our Easter Vigil! More information will be available in the coming weeks. In the meantime, if you – or a
friend or family member – are interested in learning
about RCIA, please contact Jim Canivan, Saint Paul
RCIA Coordinator, at 860-633-4569, or email him at
[email protected]. Jim will be happy to provide whatever
information you would like.
Prayer Shawl Ministry will hold their monthly meeting
on Thursday, September 15, 2016 from 10:00 am –
11:00 am. Many beautiful shawls and lap blankets are
available for individuals in need of spiritual comfort. Anyone wishing to obtain a shawl or lap blanket, or join us in
this ministry, please contact Rosemary Nemecek (860)659-4899.
SMALL CHRISTIAN COMMUNITIES
Our first meeting this fall will take place on Sunday evening, September 25, at 5:00 in the St. Augustine church
hall. (Succeeding meetings will likely be on Monday
nights rather than on Sundays.) If you are at all interested plan to attend this seasonal kickoff meeting, which
will give you an opportunity to meet the people involved
and learn what Small Church Communities are all about.
If you would like to attend, or if you simply want more
information, please contact Ann and Phil Lohr (860-4302105), and they’ll be happy to provide details and sign
you up if you choose to give it a try.
BABY BOTTLE DRIVE
Birthright will distribute baby bottles after Mass next
weekend. We ask that you take the bottles home, fill
them with coins, cash or check and return them on October 1-2. As you will see from the insert in the bottle you
may make a donation in honor or memory of a loved one.
This is an opportunity for our church families to have
hands on involvement in a project that saves the lives of
unborn children and makes a lasting difference in the
mothers’ lives.
COLLECTION FOR LOUISIANA
An emergency collection to support the humanitarian
efforts of Catholic Charities in helping those dioceses'
effected by the flooding in Louisiana will take place next
weekend. Please be as generous as you can.
MISSION TRIP
Golf Tournament – Mission Trip Fundraiser: This
year’s Golf Tournament & Fundraiser is scheduled for
Tuesday Sept 20th at Glastonbury Hills Country
Club. Our goal is to raise $10,000 to support next year’s
Mission Trip. The cost is $125 per player/$500 for a foursome. Sponsorships start @ $100 and Raffle Prize donations start @$25. If you are not a golfer, you can attend
the Cocktail Hour & Dinner for $50 and participate in the
various auctions & raffles. Forms are available at the
church entrances & on the parish web-sites. Anyone interested in playing in the tournament, becoming a sponsor, or
donating raffle prizes please contact Melissa Lacafta, at
the St. Paul Rectory, [email protected],
860-633-9419 or Brian Gauthier at [email protected],
860-490-1656.
MOTHER & CHILD
Mother and Child is a group of mostly Catholic moms
who gather to pray together, support each other, and refresh twice a month.
We have two events each
month. We meet in the library at St. Paul's on the Third
Saturday of each month for prayer, fellowship, and a book
reflection. Our new book is "Raising Faith-Filled Kids"
by Tom McGrath, a topic near and dear to all our
hearts!
There is free babysitting in an adjoining
room. Please join us on 9/17/2016 from 9:00-10:30am as
we kick off the new book. We also meet on the First
Thursday of each month for a social night of wine, snacks,
good conversation, and prayer. Our next social is
10/6/2016 from 8-9:30pm.
Contact Sarah Johnson
([email protected]) for more information.
HEALTH CARE MINISTRY
The St. Paul Health Care Ministry will hold its monthly
meeting on Tuesday, September 13, at 7:00 pm in the
conference room in the south wing. All healthcare professionals are invited to join us. Blood pressure screenings
are being held after all Masses (9/10-9/11) in the South
Wing conference room. Have your blood pressure
checked by one of our experienced parish nurses.
