In December I moved from Frankfurt to
Hamburg and am now having fun exploring this fantastic city. The Hanseatic city is
especially magical in winter: it is wonderfully peaceful on the Elbe and Alster, and at
the harbour a lot of the ships are decorated
with lights. The perfect place to unwind and
recharge your batteries is one of the many
spa addresses. You will find a selection of

sich im Nordwesten Namibias.
4.500 Quadratkilometer atemberaubende Landschaft im Damaraland! Auf der Wanderung
erfuhren wir sehr viel über Fauna und Flora dieser herrlichen
Region. Hier kann man sehr
viele Wildbeobachtungen machen: Zebra, Springbock, Kudu,
Oryx und Strauß erlebt man aus nächster Nähe. Mit etwas Glück
sieht man sogar die seltenen Wüstenelefanten. Wir waren 1989
das erste Mal in Namibia. Ein Freund hatte uns „überredet“ mitzukommen. Wir waren so beeindruckt von dem Land, dass wir
im nächsten Frühjahr unsere zehnte Reise dorthin machen.

point of our hike, is located in the northwest of Namibia. 4500
square kilometres of breathtaking landscape in Damaraland!
During our tour we discovered a lot about the flora and fauna of
this wonderful region. And it’s a perfect place to observe wildlife
in its natural habitat: you will have the chance to witness zebras,
springboks, kudus, oryx antelopes and ostriches up close. With a
bit of luck you’ll even see the rare desert elephants. We went to
Namibia for the first time in 1989 when one of our friends “persuaded” us to go with him. We were so impressed by the country
that we’ll be travelling there for the tenth time next spring.

hanghai hat 22 Millionen Einwohner, so viele gibt es ja in
Europa fast nicht“, bemerkte Bastian Schweinsteiger nach
seiner Ankunft mit der Nationalmannschaft in Shanghai.
Auch wenn Deutschland allein rund 82 Millionen Einwohner
hat, so hat den Kicker die chinesische Metropole doch sichtlich
beeindruckt. Neben den modernen Wolkenkratzern am Ufer des
Huangpu-Flusses, die Shanghais Ruf als wirtschaftliche Metropole
repräsentieren, finden sich aber auch noch zahlreiche Zeitzeugen
der bewegten Geschichte der Stadt. Im ehemaligen Französischen
Viertel aus der Kolonialzeit östlich der modernen Einkaufsstraße Huaihai Lu stehen Apartmenthäuser im Stil des Art déco und
Villen mit Kolonialcharme. „Die Huaihai Road ist die bekannteste Einkaufs- und Restaurantstraße. Besonders sehenswert sind
allerdings die kleinen eleganten Seitenstraßen“, so Kate Huang.
„Verlässt man die Hauptstraße in Richtung Yan’an Lu, gewinnt
man einen kleinen Eindruck vom romantisch verklärten Flair der
Kolonialzeit. Die kleinen Gassen in Xintiandi, ebenfalls im ehemaligen französischen Konzessionsgebiet, sind ideal für verträumte
Spaziergänge, Candle-Light-Dinner und Shoppingrunden in charmanten Buchläden.“ Die General-Managerin von China Eastern
Airlines lebte über 37 Jahre in Shanghai, bevor sie nach Deutschland zog. Heute wohnt sie in Hamburg und muss feststellen, dass,
obwohl sie Shanghai kennt wie keine andere Stadt, sich dort alles
unglaublich schnell verändert.
Das ehemalige Wohnviertel Xintiandi mit einst heruntergekommenen Häusern und engen Gassen hat sich innerhalb weniger
Jahre in ein trendiges Einkaufs- und Vergnügungsviertel verwandelt. Im südlichen Teil überwiegt eher moderne Architektur. Neben
internationalen Restaurants, klassischen Boutiquen und Souvenirläden gibt es auch luxuriöse Apartmentanlagen. Im Nordblock
sind die alten Shikumen-Häuser in ihrem äußeren Erscheinungsbild erhalten geblieben. Sie verleihen dem Viertel seinen Charme
und den nostalgischen Kontrast zu den nahen Glasfassaden der
Wolkenkratzer. Das Innere der Shikumen wurde modernisiert. Hier
befinden sich gemütliche Restaurants, Bars und Cafés, die neben
chinesischer auch französische, amerikanische, deutsche, brasilianische, italienische und japanische Küche anbieten. Wer die chinesische Küche ausprobieren mag, dem seien die vielen kleinen Straßenstände empfohlen. Klassische Gerichte sind kleine Teigtaschen

Within just a few years the former residential quarter of Xintiandi,
with its once run-down houses and narrow lanes, has been transformed into a trendy shopping and recreational area. The southern part has mainly modern architecture. As well as international
restaurants, classic boutiques and souvenir shops there are also
luxurious apartment blocks. The north block is where you will discover the old Shikumen stone houses, the outer appearance of
which has been preserved. They give the neighbourhood its charm
and form a nostalgic contrast to the nearby glass façades of the
skyscrapers. The interiors of the Shikumen houses have also been
modernised. Here you will find cosy restaurants, bars and cafés,
which, as well as Chinese dishes, also offer French, American,
German, Brazilian, Italian and Japanese cuisine. If you want to try
some Chinese culinary treats we also recommend the many small
street stalls. Classic dishes are small filled dumplings (Jiaozi) and
hot pot, also known as Chinese fondue. Typical ingredients are

over the Huangpu River. Take some time out and observe the
skyscrapers on the riverbanks and the Nanpu and Yangpu suspension bridges, which are well worth seeing.” The boats for the

Bund (Zhongshan Road).

hanghai has a population of 22 million, that’s almost as
many as the entire population of Europe,” remarked footballer Bastian Schweinsteiger upon arriving in Shanghai with the
German national team. Even if Germany alone actually has around
82 million inhabitants, the player was obviously overwhelmed by
the size of the Chinese metropolis. Alongside the modern skyscrapers on the banks of the Huangpu River, evidence of Shanghai’s reputation as a centre of commerce, there are still numerous
testimonies to the city’s eventful past. In the former French district
from the colonial period to the east of modern Huaihai Lu shopping street you will find art-déco style apartment houses and villas
with colonial charm. “Huaihai Road is the most well-known shopping and restaurant street, but the elegant little side streets are also
worth seeing,” says Kate Huang. “If you leave the main street in
the direction of Yan’an Lu, you’ll gain an impression of the romantic flair of the colonial era. The little side streets in Xintiandi, also
in the former French Concession district, are ideal for romantic
strolls, candlelight dinners and shopping in charming bookstores.”
The General Manager of China Eastern Airlines lived in Shanghai
for over 37 years before moving to Germany. She now lives in Hamburg and admits that, although she knows Shanghai like no other
city, everything is changing there at an incredible speed.

There are many places to relax in the bustling city. You will find
small parks and large gardens like the Yù Yuán Garden everywhere,
as well as more peaceful sections of the Bund, the famous riverside promenade, where you can unwind and recharge your batteries. When asked about her ultimate Shanghai tips, Kate Huang
gushes with enthusiasm: “The Jade Buddha Temple is breathtakingly beautiful. In the Shanghai Old Street you can still experience
the old Shanghai, starting with the Ming Dynasty (from 1368).
The houses on both sides of the street have adorned lattice windows, wooden doors, painted balustrades and folding doors. The
upturned guttering, the black tiles and red columns give them the
typical Chinese look.” But our Chinese guide can also recommend
a visit to People’s Square with the Shanghai Grand Theatre opera
and the Shanghai Art Museum: “If you have the opportunity, you
should definitely try to see a Chinese opera – a traditional mix of
music, singing, acting, dancing and acrobatics.”

berühmten Uferpromenade, ruhigere Abschnitte zum Seelebaumelnlassen. Nach den absoluten Must-haves gefragt, sprudelt
es aus Kate Huang heraus: „Der Jadebuddha-Tempel ist atemberaubend schön. In der Shanghai Old Street kann man noch etwas
vom alten Shanghai erleben, angefangen bei der Ming-Dynastie
(ab 1368). Die Häuser auf beiden Seiten der Straße haben verzierte Sprossenfenster, Holztüren, bemalte Balustraden und Flügeltüren. Die nach oben gewandten Dachrinnen, die schwarzen
Fliesen und roten Säulen geben ihnen den typisch chinesischen
Anstrich.“ Aber auch den People’s Square mit der Oper Shanghai Grand Theatre und dem Shanghai Art Museum empfiehlt die
Chinesin: „Wer die Möglichkeit hat, sollte sich einmal unbedingt
eine Chinesische Oper anschauen – eine traditionelle Mischung
aus Musik, Gesang, Schauspiel, Tanz und Akrobatik.“
Die chinesische Teekultur ist die älteste der Welt.
Beliebte Mitbringsel sind da natürlich grüner Tee

Kates Tipps für Verliebte: „Nichts ist romantischer,
als am Bund am westlichen Ufer des Huangpu-Flusses
spazieren zu gehen. Abends laden dann die kleinen Gassen in
Xintiandi zum Flanieren und Essengehen ein.“ In dem autofreien
Vergnügungsviertel gibt es sogar noch einige restaurierte Gassen im Shikumen-Stil. Der Name leitete sich von den steinernen
Tor- und Türrahmen der Eingänge ab. Mittlerweile leben wieder
einige Familien in den winzigen Häuschen. Meist sind hier allerdings Restaurants, Boutiquen oder Buchläden eingezogen. Im
Sommer sind die kleinen Gassen voller Kaffeehausstühle und
Straßenkünstler.
Kate’s tips for lovers: “There is nothing more romantic than
strolling along the Bund on the western banks of the Huangpu
River. In the evening the little backstreets in Xintiandi are perfect
for wandering around and going for meals.” In the pedestrian
zone full of shops and restaurants there are still even a few
restored Shikumen-style streets. The name comes from the stone
gate and door frames of the entrances. Some families are living in
the tiny little houses again, but most of them are home to restaurants, boutiques or bookstores. In summer the little streets are
full of street artists and people enjoying tea in front of the small
cafés.

s knarzt und knackt im Mastbaum. Ich muss mich erst mal
an das leichte Schwanken gewöhnen. Der erste Abend an
Bord der „Emma Rosa“ beschert uns Reisenden eine laue
und sternenklare Nacht. Bei einem Get-together lerne ich meine
neuen Freunde aus aller Welt langsam kennen. Wir sind ein bunter Haufen, finden Kapitän Mehmet und seine Crew, wir spinnen
unser Seemannsgarn auf Englisch und lernen gleich ein paar
Brocken Türkisch. „Serefe!“, Prost, heißt es ein ums andere Mal.
„Iyi geceler“, Gute Nacht!, eine ganze Weile später.
Der nächste Morgen bringt den Beweis für das Blau in dieser Reise.
Die Crew unserer Gulet, eines traditionellen Segelschiffs, hat den
Anker gelichtet und die obligaten Motoren angeworfen. Das Meer,
durch das wir gleiten, zeigt sich in tiefem Azur. Wir entdecken
sogar Delfine. Meine Füße hängen über Bord, der Wind im Haar.
Die lykische Küste verwöhnt uns mit einsamen Buchten. Unser
Koch Ahmet hat Fisch gefangen, der sogleich auf dem BBQ-Grill
vorn am Bug landet. Turkish Delights, diese zuckersüßen Naschereien hat er auch für uns dabei. Einige lesen. Andere springen
immer wieder vom Schiff aus kopfüber ins kristallklare Wasser.
Abtauchen und Schnorcheln stehen für mich auf dem Programm.
So verstreichen die Tage im Blau des Meeres.
Wir nehmen Kurs auf Ölüdeniz, was Totes Meer bedeutet, weil das
Wasser hier so still ist, in dieser von Bergen und dem Baba Dagi,
dem Vaterberg, umgebenen Bucht. In meinen Träumen, basierend
auf zahlreichen Türkei-Werbespots, bin ich schon mehrfach über
die weiße Landzunge im türkisfarbenen Meer geflogen. Wer will,
kann das jetzt real erleben. Eine junge Amerikanerin traut sich
per Tandemflug mit dem Paraglider über die Bucht. Ich bin nicht
mutig genug und spaziere lieber über die weißen Kieselsteine, die
den Strand bei Ölüdeniz ausmachen. Wir müssen zurück an Bord.
Am nächsten Morgen heißt es Abschied nehmen von der Crew und
den neuen Freunden. Eine Woche ist viel zu schnell vergangen.

he mast creaks and groans. I have to get used to the gentle
swaying. The first evening aboard the “Emma Rosa” is mild
and starry for us passengers. At a get-together I slowly get
to know each of my nine friends from all over the world. We are
a motley bunch, according to Captain Mehmet and his crew. We
each spin our own sailor’s yarns in English and also learn a few
words of Turkish. I discover that “Serefe!” means “cheers” and “Iyi
geceler” is “good night”.
The next morning we are reminded why this voyage is called the
Blue Cruise. The crew of our gulet, a traditional sailing ship, has
weighed the anchor and started up the obligatory engines. We
glide through the deep azure blue sea and even manage to spot
dolphins. My feet are dangling over board; the breeze is blowing
through my hair. The Lycian coast impresses us with views of
deserted coves. Our chef Ahmet has caught fish that instantly land
on the barbeque at the ship’s prow. And he introduces us to the
sugary sweet treats known as Turkish Delight. Some passengers
are reading. Others are having fun jumping from the ship, headfirst
into the crystal clear water. Diving and snorkelling are on my itinerary: the perfect activities to while away the hours on the deep blue
sea.
We set sail for Öludeniz, which means Dead Sea because the water
there is so still, in the bay surrounded by mountains and the “Baba
Dagi” (which means “Father Mountain”). In my dreams, based on
countless TV-adverts for Turkey, I have already flown over the white
headland framed by the turquoise-coloured sea many times before.
Now it’s time to experience it all for real. A young American girl
dares to try a tandem paragliding flight over the bay. I am not brave
enough and prefer to stroll along the beach near Öludeniz, which
is distinguished by its white pebbles. It’s time to go back on board.
The next morning we have to bid farewell to the crew and our newfound friends. One week flew by way too quickly.

Wenngleich die Zimmer und Suiten des Hillside Beach Clubs
standfest an den Hang gebaut wurden, ist mein inneres Gleichgewicht durch die eine Woche auf See noch nicht wieder ganz ausgependelt. Ich schwanke. Auch was die Aktivitäten im Hotel betrifft.
Was soll ich machen?
Türkisch lernen? Cocktails mixen? Soll ich mich so richtig einseifen
lassen im türkischen Hamam? Oder ist eine revitalisierende balinesische Massage eventuell passend? Yoga? Tauchen? Mountainbiking? Welchen Ausflug buche ich: Xanthos, Dalyan, eine Jeeptour
nach Saklikent?
Während mir am Nachmittag frische Erdbeeren mit Joghurt kredenzt werden, entscheide ich mich für einen Kurzausflug nach
Kayaköy, einer nahe gelegenen Geisterstadt, und staune auf dem
Weg dorthin über antike Felsengräber und frei laufende Ziegen.
In der Panagia-Pirgiotis-Kirche halte ich beim Blick auf die uralten
Fresken inne, als mir erklärt wird, was mein Name in der Türkei
bedeutet. Sever, so lerne ich, bedeutet die Liebende! Und ja, meine
Liebe für die Türkei ist mit dieser Reise sicher entfacht.
Und so setzt sich die Sonne an meinem letzten Abend noch mal
mit all ihrer Herzenswärme zur Ruhe. Und während ich noch einen
letzten Drink am hoteleigenen Beach ordere, spielen sie meinen
Lieblingssong von Jem, die singt: „It’s amazing, makes my heart
sing!“ – und ich singe leise mit.

in der Disco. Ein echtes Hotelbonbon – ein Turkish Delight!

Even though the rooms and suites of the Hillside Beach Club, built
on the incline, have solid foundations, my inner balance still isn’t
fully stabilised after a week out at sea. I am swaying. And my mind
is also swaying when it comes to deciding on activities in the hotel.
What should I do? Learn Turkish? Mix cocktails? Should I choose
to be immersed in soap suds in the Turkish hammam? Or is an
invigorating Balinese massage just what I need? Yoga? Diving?
Mountain biking? Which excursion should I book: Xanthos, Dalyan,
a Jeep tour to Saklikent?
While being served fresh strawberries and yoghurt in the afternoon,
I decide to venture on a short trip to Kayakoy, a nearby ghost town.
On the way there I marvel at the ancient rock tombs and free-roaming goats. In the Panagia Pirgiotis Church I pause for thought at
the sight of the ancient frescoes, as I am given an explanation of
what my surname means in Turkish. Sever, I learn, means the loving one! And yes, my love for Turkey has certainly been sparked by
this trip.

On the last evening I watch the sun set one more time and my
heart warms. While I’m ordering one last drink at the hotel’s private beach, they play my favourite song by Jem. The lyrics “It’s
amazing, makes my heart sing!” sound out from the speakers and
I sing along quietly.

Cruise on the Mediterranean
AIDAmar, the new ship in the AIDA fleet, is 252 metres
long and 32.2 metres wide. From 2012 she will
be sailing on the Mediterranean, on a route
which promises several highlights. From
Palma de Mallorca her journey will continue to Tunis/La Goulette, Palermo,
Naples and Rome, then back to
Mallorca.
Ab Herbst 2012 fährt die nagelneue AIDAmar eine traumhafte
Sieben-Tage-Route durch das Mittelmeer. Starthafen ist Palma de
Mallorca – die zweite Heimat vieler Deutscher und Hauptstadt
einer wunderschönen Insel, die es lohnt, vorab ein paar Tage
erkundet zu werden. Anschließend geht es Richtung Süden nach
Nordafrika. In Tunis gehen die Passagiere an Land und entdecken
die romantische Altstadt. Wer lieber auf den Spuren berühmter
Maler unterwegs ist, besucht das Künstlerdorf Sidi Bou Saïd. Weiße
Häuser mit leuchtend blauen Fenstern und Türen säumen die
Treppengänge und erinnern an die Gemälde des deutschen Expressionisten August Macke, der auf seiner Tunis-Reise hier verweilte.
Als nächstes Ziel winkt Sizilien. In Palermo beeindruckt die kirchliche Pracht, besonders der Dom von Monreale. Abschließend wird
auf einer Schnorcheltour eine versunkene altrömische Hafenanlage
erkundet. Italienisches Flair kann man auch auf der nächsten Station genießen: Neapel. Hier soll es nicht nur die beste Pizza und
den besten Espresso der Welt geben, sondern auch eine grandiose
Naturkulisse entlang der Amalfiküste. Weiter die Küste gen Norden
gipfelt das Italienabenteuer in einem Besuch der Ewigen Stadt Rom.
Der Petersdom mit seiner gigantischen Kuppel verschlägt einem
die Sprache. Danach wirft man eine Münze in den Trevi-Brunnen,
wünscht sich etwas und wandert weiter zum Pantheon oder zum
Kolosseum. Zurück geht es wieder nach Palma de Mallorca, wo alle
Reisenden noch eine Woche ruhigen Strandurlaub verbingen können, um all die schönen Erlebnisse zu verarbeiten.

From autumn 2012 the brand new AIDAmar will begin her wonderful seven-day tour of the Mediterranean. The departure port is
Palma de Mallorca – a second home to many Germans and the
capital city of a wonderful island, which is definitely worth exploring
before you board. You will then sail south to North Africa. In Tunis
passengers will have the opportunity to go ashore and explore the
romantic Old Town. But if you prefer to follow the trails of famous
painters, you can visit the Sidi Bou Saïd artist village. White houses
with bright blue windows and doors line the staircased lanes and
are reminiscent of the paintings by the German Expressionist
August Macke, who spent time here during his visit to Tunis. The
next destination is Sicily. In Palermo you will follow a trail of reli
gious splendour and explore the Cathedral of Monreale, followed by
a snorkelling tour to see the sunken ancient Roman harbour. The
next stop is all about enjoying Italian flair: Naples. This is not only
supposed to be the home of the world’s best pizza and best espresso, but also offers a stunning natural backdrop along the Amalfi
coast. Further along the coast, to the north, your Italian adventure
will culminate in a visit to the Eternal City of Rome. St. Peter’s Basil
ica with its gigantic dome will leave you speechless. After that you
can toss a coin into the Trevi Fountain, make a wish and stroll back
to the Pantheon or the Colosseum. And the journey will take you
back to Palma de Mallorca, where all passengers can enjoy a week’s
relaxing beach holiday and plenty of time to reminisce about the
many wonderful experiences of the last few days.

With the world’s biggest launching ceremony on 12 May 2012,
the new ship of the AIDA fleet will be presented to the public
during the 823rd birthday of Hamburg’s harbour. For the first
time in the history of cruises, the three identically constructed

Delhi
Nicht nur Yoga- und Ayurveda-Fans, auch andere Sinnsucher und
Kulturinteressierte zieht es ins Land mit den höchsten Berggipfeln
der Welt. Hier im Norden, am Fuße des Himalajas, findet man noch
das ursprüngliche Indien und auch die Hauptstadt Delhi. Das größte
Bauwerk in der Metropole ist das Rote Fort „Lal Qila“ (siehe Bild).
Mit seinen pompösen Hallen, Marmorpalästen, luxuriösen Privaträumen, einer Moschee und den kunstvoll angelegten Gärten repräsentierte es jahrhundertelang die Macht der Moguln. Wohl genauso
prächtig ist das Mausoleum des Humayun. Gerade mal zweieinhalb
Stunden südlich der Megacity erreicht man Agra und hier eines der
wohl sagenumwobendsten Gebäude der Welt: das Taj Mahal. Mit
seiner kunstvollen Architektur und den traumhaften Gärten ringsum
lädt es zu Spaziergängen ein. Ebenfalls nicht weit entfernt von Delhi
sind die Pilgerstädte Rishikesh und Haridwar mit ihren zahlreichen
Tempeln und Ashrams. Delhi ist ab Hamburg über das Turkish-Airlines-Drehkreuz Istanbul zu erreichen.
Not only yoga and Ayurveda fans, but also people trying to make
sense of their existence and the culturally curious are attracted to
the country with the world’s highest mountain peaks. Here in the
north, at the foot of the Himalayas, you can still experience the real
India and also the capital of Delhi. The biggest structure in Delhi is
the Red Fort, or “Lal Qila” (see photo). With its ostentatious halls,
marble palaces, luxurious private rooms, a mosque and the cre
atively landscaped gardens it represented the power of the Mogul
Dynasty over centuries. Just as impressive is Humayun’s Tomb.
Just two and a half hours south of the megacity is Agra, where you
will discover one of the most legendary constructions in the world:
the Taj Mahal. With its unsurpassed architecture and beautiful gardens it is the perfect place to go for a stroll. The pilgrimage sites of
Rishikesh and Haridwar with their numerous temples and ashrams
are not far from Delhi either. You can fly to Delhi from Hamburg via
the airline hub of Istanbul with Turkish Airlines.

Die Spitze des Zeltes ...
... das bedeutet Ras al-Khaimah übersetzt. Der Name geht wohl auf
die Gebirgsspitzen des nahen Hadschar-Gebirges zurück, dem das
Emirat seine fruchtbaren Böden verdankt. Hier findet sich noch das
ursprüngliche Arabien: Strände, so weit das Auge reicht, fruchtbare
Oasen und beeindruckende Wüstendünen. Bis in die 1970er-Jahre
war die Stadt nur ein kleines Fischer-, Perlentaucher- und Piratendorf. Das nahe Gebirge setzte dem Städtebau eine natürliche Grenze – der Grund, warum sich Ras al-Khaimah seinen ursprünglichen
Charme bewahren konnte. Luxuriöse Hotels, Golfclubs und Einkaufszentren lassen dennoch keine Wünsche offen: Der erholsame
Strandurlaub mit allen Annehmlichkeiten einer modernen Stadt
ist garantiert. Das Quellwasser aus den Bergen speist die ausgedehnten Orangen- und Dattelplantagen an der Küste. Die grünen
Oasen beeindrucken vor dem tiefen Azurblau des Ozeans und den
sandfarbenen Wüstendünen des Hinterlands. Mitten in der Stadt
befindet sich eine der Lagunen des Emirats, mit üppiger Vegetation
und dem größten Mangrovenwald der Region. Entlang der Lagune zieht sich die Promenade zum Spazierengehen. Sie führt vorbei
am Einkaufszentrum Al Manar Mall und am Tower Links Golf Club.
Bis auf einige wenige Hotelneubauten am Strand sind die sandfarbenen Häuser, in traditioneller Bauweise aus Korallenstein erbaut,
meist nur einstöckig, unterbrochen von Bäumen und idyllischen
Gärten. Spas, Restaurants und Hotels verwöhnen die Gäste. Zum
Shoppen bieten sich die traditionellen Souks an. In der Kuwait Hospital Road befinden sich u. a. zahlreiche Schneider und Stoffläden,
in einer Seitenstraße mehrere Goldgeschäfte. Für Tagesausflüge
bieten sich Touren nach Dubai, nach Huwaylat im Süden des Emirats, in das alte, verlassene Fischerdorf Jazirat al-Hamra oder in das
Oasendorf Munay mit seinen herrlichen Palmenhainen an.

The top of the tent...
...is the translation of Ras al-Khaimah, a name dating back to the
mountain peaks of the nearby Hajar Mountains, which the Emirate
has to thank for its fertile soil. This is where you’ll still find the original Arabia: beaches as far as the eye can see, fertile oases and aweinspiring desert dunes. Until the seventies the city was just a small
village of fishermen, pearl divers and pirates. The nearby mountains
formed a natural boundary for the city’s urban planning – which is
the reason why Ras al-Khaimah has been able to retain its authentic charm. But luxurious hotels, golf clubs and shopping centres
provide everything a tourist needs: a relaxing beach holiday with all
of the conveniences of a modern city is guaranteed. The mountain
springs irrigate the vast orange and date plantations on the coast.
You will be amazed by the green oases in front of the azure blue of
the ocean and the sand-coloured desert dunes of the backcountry.
Right in the middle of the city is one of the Emirates lagoons, with
lush vegetation and the biggest mangrove forests of the region.
Take a walk along the promenade stretching along the lagoon. It
will lead you past the Al Manar Mall and the Tower Links Golf Club.
Except for a few new hotels on the beach the sand-coloured houses,
built using traditional methods from coral, are mostly just one storey high, broken up by trees and idyllic gardens. Guests will enjoy
being pampered at the spas, restaurants and hotels. And the traditional souks are perfect for shopping. There are countless tailors
and fabric stores on the Kuwait Hospital Road, and several gold
sellers down one of the side streets. You can book day excursions to
Dubai, Huwaylat in the south of the Emirate, to the old, abandoned
fishing village Jazira al-Hamra or to the oasis village of Munay with
its wonderful palm groves.

Dubai Creek fündig. 1997 wurde hier das Heritage Village errichtet. Im
Museumsdorf im Stil einer arabischen Siedlung zeigen original nachgebaute Steinhäuser aus den Berg- und Wüstenregionen, Beduinenzelte, traditionelle Windturmhäuser, Marktstände und Gewürzläden
die traditionelle Lebensweise des Landes. Es lohnt sich also, ein paar
Tage länger in Dubai zu bleiben.
No other metropolis embodies more extremes than Dubai: there are
the air-conditioned luxury hotels, like the world-famous Burj Al Arab
on Jumeirah Beach, and green golf courses surrounded by desert
sand. Modern skyscrapers stand next to traditional souks, commercial areas where the markets and handicraft workshops are found. In
the morning tourists indulge in shopping sprees in one of the gigantic malls like the Dubai Mall with the world’s biggest gold souk and
an aquarium over three floors, and in the evening they ride on camels over desert dunes into the sunset. Traditional dhows bob up and
down between breathtakingly expensive yachts on the Dubai Creek, a
lagoon in the Persian Gulf that splits the city in two. The Rose Tower
– currently the highest hotel building in the world at a height of 333
metres – was opened in 2010 and is located opposite The World
islands, a group of 270 artificial islands, which look like a world map
from above. On the other side of the Dubai Creek are historic buildings like the stunning Jumeirah Mosque, which, however, can only be
visited by non-Muslims during guided tours. If you’re looking for the
traditional Arabia, you will find it close to the mouth of Dubai Creek,
where the Heritage Village was built in 1997. The museum village,
in the style of an Arabian settlement with its authentic replica stone
houses from the mountain and desert regions, Bedouin tents, traditional wind tower houses, market stands and spice stalls, shows the
country’s traditional way of living. So it’s worth staying in Dubai a few
extra days.

Daus zwischen atemberaubend teuren Jachten. Der Rose Tower
– mit einer Höhe von 333 Metern das derzeit höchste Hotelgebäude der Welt – wurde 2010 eröffnet und liegt gegenüber den The
World Islands, einer Gruppe aus 270 künstlich aufgeschütteten
Inseln, die aus dem Weltall aussieht wie eine Weltkarte. Auf der
anderen Seite des Dubai Creek befinden sich historische Gebäude
wie die wunderschöne Jumeirah-Moschee, die von Nichtmoslems
allerdings nur im Rahmen von Führungen besucht werden darf.

m 5:30 Uhr beginnt der Tag für Werner
Hebestriet in der Mitarbeiterkantine des
Hamburger Flughafens. Dann müssen
600 halbe Brötchen geschmiert werden. Währenddessen bespricht er mit seinem Team die
Tageskarte. Heute gibt es Erbseneintopf, honigmarinierten Schweinebraten, Frühlingssuppe,
Grießbrei mit Früchten, Indische Reispfanne
nach Weight-Watchers-Rezept und Lammhacksteaks mit Kräuterbutter. Um 7 Uhr beginnen
die Köche, die Kochlöffel zu schwingen, denn ab
11 Uhr stehen die ersten hungrigen Mitarbeiter
vor der Tür. „Wir bereiten alles frisch zu und
benutzen keine Convenience-Produkte. Nur die
Kartoffeln bekommen wir geschält.“ Aber wer
würde schon 80 Kilogramm jeden Tag schälen
wollen? Seit fast sieben Jahren arbeitet Werner
Hebestriet in der Mitarbeiterkantine des Flughafens, vorher war er Koch im Sternerestaurant
Jacobs an der Elbchausse. Die familienfreundlichen Arbeitszeiten haben ihn in die Großküche
gebracht. Um 14 Uhr hat er heute Feierabend.
Eine Fahrradtour mit den Töchtern ist geplant:
„Um die Linie zu halten! Immerhin musste
ich die Erbsensuppe heute fünfmal abschmecken“, so Werner Hebestriet. „Ich kann in der
Kantine zwar nicht so experimentieren, wie ich
manchmal möchte, aber das hole ich zum Leidwesen meiner Familie zu Hause nach“, so der
54-Jährige verschmitzt. Während Werner Hebe
striet Hausmannskost-Rezepte kreiert, geht es
in der Küche der LSG Sky Chefs extravagant
zu. Ein Scheich hat geordert. Zunächst müssen
Jörg Haidinger und sein Team recherchieren,
was eigentlich Machmunia, Muhalabia und Sel-

Ob Hunderte hungrige Mitarbeiter, Tausende Fluggäste oder ein
reicher Scheich – jeder möchte nicht nur satt werden, sondern
es soll auch schmecken. Unsere Redakteurin Anne Sauer hat den
Köchen am Airport einen Tag lang in die Töpfe geguckt.

wie er von allen liebevoll genannt
wird, backt im Mövenpick-Restaurant in Terminal 2 Weltklassepizzen: jede frisch belegt mit den
Wunschzutaten des Gastes.

his guests’ favourite fresh toppings.
t 5:30 am the day is beginning for Werner Hebestriet in the staff canteen
at Hamburg Airport: 600 bread roll
halves need to be buttered. While doing this, he
discusses the menu of the day with his team.
On the menu today is split pea stew, honeyed
roast pork, spring vegetable soup, semolina
pudding with fruits, an Indian rice dish from
a Weight Watchers recipe and minced lamb
steaks with herb butter. At 7:00 am the chefs
begin cooking, as the first hungry staff will be
waiting at the door from 11:00 am. “We prepare
everything from scratch and don’t use any convenience products. Except the potatoes, which
come ready peeled.” But who would want to
peel 80 kilograms of potatoes every day? Werner Hebestriet has been working in the airport’s
staff canteen for nearly seven years and before
that he was a chef at Jacobs, the Michelinstarred restaurant on the Elbchaussee street in
Hamburg. But the family-friendly working hours
influenced his decision to work in a canteen
kitchen: he finishes work for the day at 2:00 pm.
Today he is planning a bike ride with his daughters: “To stay slim! After all, I had to taste the
pea soup five times today,” says Werner Hebestriet. “Although it’s not possible to experiment
in the canteen as much as I would sometimes
like to, I make up for it at home, much to the
dismay of my family,” says the 54-year-old with
a smirk. While Werner Hebestriet creates traditional, home-style recipes, in the kitchen of
the LSG Sky Chefs it is a lot more extravagant.
A sheik has placed an order. Jörg Haidinger
and his team have to firstly research what

und Baklava haben wir in unseren zwölf Kühlhäusern immer vorrätig. Geld spielt für unsere
Kunden keine Rolle. Das Ungewöhnlichste, was
wir je produziert haben, war eine Pralinentorte –
auf jeder Praline prangte ein Swarovski-Kristall.
Viele wollen aber auch typisch deutsches Essen
wie Sauerkraut und Würstchen“, so Haidinger.
Und was hat Michael Jackson bestellt? „Fast
Food. Einer unserer Mitarbeiter fuhr zu einer
bekannten Burgerkette und verpackte jede Zutat
einzeln.“ Als das Essen des Scheichs fertig ist,
bringt es Koch Matthias Stamer zum Flugzeug.
Zwei bis an die Zähne bewaffnete SecurityMitarbeiter nehmen ihm das Tablett ab. „Das
ist jedes Mal ein merkwürdiges Gefühl“, so der
44-Jährige. Zum Abschluss der kulinarischen
Airport-Reise geht es ins Mövenpick-Restaurant
zu „Sergio“, der eigentlich Zarko Stojanovic
heißt. Nach den ganzen Köstlichkeiten mundet
seine Pizza vorzüglich. Das Geheimnis? „Nur
Wasser, Mehl und Hefe für den Teig, und alles
frisch belegt!“ Und so backt er jeden Tag zwischen 100 und 160 Pizzen. „Wenn Sergio nicht
da ist, verkaufen wir bis zu 30 Prozent weniger“,
so Manfred Schmid, Gastronomy Director von
Mövenpick am Airport. Kein Wunder, denn
niemand preist die Pizza so gut an wie Sergio.
Er hat dafür sogar einige Brocken Italienisch
gelernt.

Machmounia, Muhalabia and Sellou are, and
where they are going to find the ingredients to
make these dishes. As well as sheiks, who bring
their private jets to Lufthansa Technik for an
overhaul, VIPs also order food here, like Prince
Charles, the Red Hot Chili Peppers, Michael
Jackson and the Crown Prince of Thailand.
“We always have lobster, caviar, champagne
and Baklava in our twelve refrigerated warehouses. Money is no object for our customers.
The most unusual dish we have ever prepared
was a praline cake – every praline was adorned
with a Swarovski crystal. But many customers
also want typical German food like sauerkraut
and sausages,” Haidinger tells us. And what did
Michael Jackson order? “Fast-food. One of our
staff drove to a well-known burger chain and
repackaged every ingredient separately.” When
the sheik’s food is ready, chef Matthias Stamer
brings it to the plane. Two heavily armed security staff take the tray from him. “It’s a strange
feeling every time,” says the 44-year-old. Our
culinary airport journey finishes with a visit to
the Mövenpick restaurant to see Sergio, who
is actually called Zarko Stojanovic. After all of
today’s culinary treats, his pizza tastes delicious. The secret? “Just water, flour and yeast
for the dough, with fresh toppings!” Every day
he bakes between 100 and 160 pizzas. “When
Sergio isn’t here, we sell up to 30 percent fewer
pizzas,” says Manfred Schmid, director of gastronomy for Mövenpick at the Airport. And it’s
no wonder because no one hypes up the pizzas as good as Sergio. He has even learnt a few
words of Italian to help him with this.

Katja Selle: Ich gehe davon aus, dass sich der
Trend zu Fernreisen fortsetzt. Für British Airways
beispielsweise sind die USA der stärkste Langstreckenmarkt. Besonders attraktiv sind Ziele wie New
York, Los Angeles, San Francisco, Las Vegas und
Miami. Wir fliegen derzeit 20 Destinationen in
den USA an. Auch Südafrika und Kanada sind sehr
beliebte Reiseziele. Und wer mit uns zu den Olympischen Spielen 2012 nach London fliegen möchte,
sichert sich am besten jetzt schon seinen Flug.
Katja Selle: I assume that the trend towards longhaul journeys will continue. For British Airways, for
example, the USA is the strongest long-haul market. Especially attractive are destinations like New
York, Los Angeles, San Francisco, Las Vegas and
Miami. We currently fly to 20 destinations in the
USA. South Africa and Canada are also very popular travel destinations. And if you want to fly with

New security checkpoints
Die zentrale Sicherheitskontrolle am Hamburger Flughafen wurde
ausgebaut. Vier zusätzliche Linien wurden für die Passagierkontrolle eröffnet. Somit verfügt der Airport jetzt über 20 Kontrolllinien.

Ab sofort haben Flensburger die Möglichkeit, vom Flensburger
ZOB direkt zum Hamburg Airport zu fahren. Der Bus fährt täglich ab 15 Uhr und erreicht den Flughafen um 16.45 Uhr. In der

Seit Kurzem gibt es zwei neue Angebote unter den zahlreichen
Shops und Dienstleistungsanbietern am Hamburg Airport. Ende
2011 eröffnete die ZWO24-Textilpflege am Hamburger Flughafen.
Zu finden ist der neue Service in Terminal 1 auf der Ankunftsebene
beim Zugang zur S-Bahn (öffentlich zugänglicher Bereich). Täglich
von 9 bis 21 Uhr reinigen die Mitarbeiter unter anderem Hosen,
Hemden, Blusen, Jacken oder Oberbetten. Für ganz Eilige verspricht die Textilpflege eine Reinigung innerhalb von nur zwei Stunden. Fruchtgummi vom Allerfeinsten bietet die neu eröffnete Bären
Company in Terminal 2 an. Aus eigener, zertifizierter Herstellung
gibt es über 100 verschiedene Sorten und Formen von süß, salzig
und sauer bis zu scharf. Ein nettes Mitbringsel!

service providers at Hamburg Airport. Dry cleaning and laundry
service ZWO24 opened at Hamburg Airport at the end of 2011. It
can be found in Terminal 1 on the arrivals level at the S-Bahn train
entrance (this area is also accessible to non-flyers). Every day from
9 am until 9 pm the staff cleans items such as trousers, shirts,
blouses, jackets and duvets. If you’re in a hurry they offer an express
cleaning service that only takes two hours. And the newly opened
Bären Company in Terminal 2 promises the very finest fruit gums,
made in their own, certified production facility. There are over 100
different flavours and shapes, from sweet and salty to sour and
spicy and they make a lovely gift!

with respect – almost caressingly.” If you want to try the bar belonging to cult artist Rocko Schamoni, take a stroll down to the Golden Pudel Club. Then walk back to the Reeperbahn and left to the
Grosse Freiheit. This street is home to clubs like Grosse Freiheit 36,
Grünspan and the Indra Music Club, where the Beatles played their
first ever concerts. Orphan Sandikci rules the roost here: “Most

the city’s loudest suburban train bridge is Waagenbau, run by John
Schierhorn. And he can take credit for our closing words: “You learn
more in a pub than in a museum or at any university, that’s a fact of

AIRPORT FOR LEAGUE CLIMBERS
Wagen wir ein Gedankenspiel: Was wäre, wenn der FC St. Pauli
bald wieder als Erstligist landet. Let us imagine what would
happen if FC St. Pauli were once more promoted to the top
flight of the Bundesliga and arrived back at Hamburg Airport.

Bar spielt Ähnliches, an ihr vorbei geht es Richtung Fischmarkt
bis zum Pinnasberg. Hier residiert das Christiansen’s. Uwe Chris
tiansen gilt als einer der besten Cocktailmixer der Welt. Wenn er ins
Schnacken kommt, erfährt man einige Storys: z. B. wie er in New
York als Barmann auf der „Queen Mary“ für seinen Freund Udo Lindenberg eine Flasche Eierlikör an Bord schmuggelte. Sein Tipp für
Nachtschwärmer: „Mit Alkohol muss man möglichst zart umgehen
– fast schon liebkosend.“ Wenn Sie die Bar von Kultkünstler Rocko
Schamoni kennenlernen wollen, wandern Sie hinunter zum Golden
Pudel Club. Danach laufen Sie zurück zur Reeperbahn und links bis
zur Großen Freiheit. Die Straße bietet Clubs wie die Große Freiheit
36, Grünspan und den Indra-Musikclub, in dem die Beatles ihre
ersten Auftritte hatten. Hier regiert Orhan Sandikci: „Die meisten
Menschen wissen ja, wo das Problem liegt. Das wollen die gar nicht
von dir wissen. Die wollen nur darüber geredet haben.“ Abschließend laufen wir Richtung Sternschanze bis zur Stresemannstraße. Unter der lautesten S-Bahn-Brücke der Stadt befindet sich der
Waagenbau, wo John Schierhorn an der Bar steht. Ihm gebührt das
Schlusswort: „Man lernt in einer Kneipe mehr als im Museum oder
an irgendeiner Hochschule, das ist mal so.“ Also feiern Sie schön!
Achtung, Ausnahmezustand: Hamburg Airport trägt braun-weiß, mit Transparenten
werden die Millerntor-Profis begrüßt, die
hinter Sonnenbrillen ihre Augenränder verbergen. „Nie mehr zweite Liga, nie mehr,
nie mehr“, hallen die Jubelchöre durch den
Airport. Der kahle Kopf von André Schubert glänzt von den vielen Bierduschen, die
auf ihn niedergeprasselt sind. Der Trainer
strahlt, nass, aber glücklich. Solche Szenen
könnten sich abspielen, wenn dem FC St.
Pauli die sofortige Rückkehr in die Eliteklasse gelingt. Optimisten diskutieren schon
darüber, wann das Team am Flughafen empfangen werden kann: Nach dem 33. Spieltag,
an dem der FC in Dresden antritt? Oder wird
schon nach dem 31. Spieltag gefeiert, wenn
St. Pauli aus Fürth zurückkehrt?
Schon mehrmals verwandelte sich der Airport in einen Ort der grenzenlosen Ekstase:
Als der FC St. Pauli am 3.5.2010 mit Trainer
Holger Stanislawski landete, warteten über
500 Fans auf ihre Helden (Foto oben), die
am Tag zuvor in Fürth den Aufstieg besie-
gelt hatten. Viele der Fans waren erst gegen
Morgen mit dem Sonderzug in Hamburg
angekommen und direkt weitergefahren zum
Flughafen. An Schlaf war nicht zu denken. Im
Mai 2001 betrat der FC als ÜberraschungsAufsteiger den Flughafen. Als Außenseiter
war St. Pauli in die Saison gestartet und
hatte mit seinem Offensivfußball alle begeistert, bis zum rauschenden Höhepunkt, dem
Sieg in Nürnberg. In einem Autokorso wurden die Profis zum Heiligengeistfeld begleitet, wo sich magische Momente abspielten,
für die Ewigkeit.
Einmal, am 29. Mai 1988, stürmten die
begeisterten Fans sogar das Rollfeld, nichts
und niemand konnte sie mehr aufhalten. Mit
dem jungen Trainer Helmut Schulte hatte St.
Pauli in Ulm den Aufstieg perfekt gemacht.
„Das waren wahnsinnige Glücksgefühle.
Nach unserer Rückkehr am Flughafen wurden wir von Tausenden Fans gefeiert“, erinnert sich Verteidiger André Trulsen nur zu
gern daran, dass Hamburg für den FC St.
Pauli der Aufsteiger-Airport ist.
All hell would break loose. Hamburg Airport
would be covered in the club’s colours of
brown and white, and huge banners would
greet the footballers from Millerntor (St. Pauli’s ground), who would be wearing sunglasses to hide the rings around their eyes. Jubilant
fans would be singing “Goodbye second division – never again, never again” throughout
the airport. André Schubert’s bald head would
be shining as a result of all the beer showers he has had to endure. The trainer would
be beaming, wet but happy. These are the
scenes that could play out if FC St. Pauli were
to gain promotion back to the Bundesliga at
the first attempt. Optimists are already speculating about when the team can be welcomed
back at the airport in this way. Perhaps after
the 33rd match day following an away game
in Dresden. Or will celebrations be in order
when St. Pauli return from Fürth after the 31st
match day?
The airport has experienced scenes of unrestrained ecstasy on several occasions in the
past. On 3 May 2010 FC St. Pauli and then
trainer Holger Stanislawski landed to be greeted by more than 500 fans (see photo above)
after sealing promotion the previous day in
Fürth. Many of the fans had only arrived back
in Hamburg by special train that morning and
had simply continued their journey to the airport. There was no question of sleeping. FC
passed through the airport as surprise promotion team in May 2001. St. Pauli had kicked off
the season as rank outsiders but then inspired
everybody with their attacking football, finishing off the campaign with an emphatic victory in Nuremberg. The players travelled by
motorcade to the Heiligengeistfeld district of
Hamburg, where the crowds enjoyed magical
moments destined for eternity.
Once, on 29 May 1988, enthusiastic fans even
stormed the runway and nobody was able to
stop them. St. Pauli had just achieved promotion with their young trainer Helmut Schulte
in Ulm. “We experienced an incredible feeling
of happiness. There were thousands of fans
waiting at the airport to celebrate with us on
our return,” recalls defender André Trulsen,
pointing out that, for FC St. Pauli, Hamburg
Airport is closely linked with promotion to the
Bundesliga.
