entspricht dann den Vorschriften der VO (EG) Nr. 834/2007 in Verbindung mit VO
(EG) Nr. 889/2008 und VO (EG) Nr. 1235/2008.

Herstellungsverfahren
Ätherisches Massoiarindenöl wird durch Wasserdampfdestillation der Rinde des Massoy-Baumes
(Cryptocaria massoia) gewonnen. Heißer Wasserdampf dient als Trägerstoff für die leicht flüchtigen
organischen Komponenten der Rinde. Durch die Nicht-Mischbarkeit der organischen Bestandteile des
ätherischen Öles und des Wassers findet beim Abkühlen eine spontane Phasentrennung statt, so dass
das reine ätherische Öl abgeschieden werden kann. Die Ausbeute liegt zwischen 0.7 und 1.2%.[1]
Manufacturing method
Essential massoia bark oil is obtained by water steam distillation of the bark of the massoy tree (Cryptocaria
massoia). Hot water steam is used as a carrier for the volatile organic compounds of the bark. Due to the nonmiscibility of the organic compounds with water, the phases readily separate upon cooling and the essential oil
can be easily separated. The yield is between 0.7 und 1.2%.[1]
Botanischer Ursprung des ätherischen Massoiarindenöls
Die Art Massoy-Baum (Cryptocaria massoia) gehört zur Gattung
Cryptocaria in der Familie der Lorbeergewächse (Lauraceae), die in der
Ordnung der Lorbeerartigen (Laurales) steht. Die ursprüngliche
Heimat des immergrünen Massoy-Baumes liegt in den Regenwäldern
Neu Guineas auf einer Höhe zwischen 400 und 1000 Metern. Der
Massoy-Baum wird durchschnittlich 25 m hoch. Zur Gewinnung des
ätherischen Öles wird die braune, raue Rinde ähnlich wie beim
Zimtbaum geerntet. Die grünen Einzelblätter stehen wechselständig,
sind länglich-oval geformt, mit einem glatten Rand. Sie sind etwa 5 bis 10 cm lang und zwischen 3
und 6 cm breit. Sie sitzen an kurzen Stielen. An den Ästen bilden sich gelbe Blüten, die in kleinen
Gruppen zusammen stehen.[2]
Botanical origin of essential massoia bark oil
The type massoy tree (Cryptocaria massoia) belongs to the genus of Cryptocaria in the laurel family (Lauraceae),
which is in the order of the laurel-like plants (Laurales). The original homeland of the evergreen massoy tree is
found in the rainforests of New Guinea at an altitude between 400 and 1000 meters. The massoy tree is on
average 25 m high. To obtain the essential oil, the brown, rough bark is harvested similar to the cinnamon tree.

The green single leaves are alternate, lanceolate-oval shaped with a smooth edge. They are about 5 to 10 cm long
and 3 to 6 cm wide and sit on short stems. Yellow flowers, which are standing in small groups, are formed on the
branches.[2]
Charakterisierung
Ätherisches Massoiarindenöl ist eine leicht bewegliche, meist hellgelbe bis braune Flüssigkeit. Der
Geruch wird als charakteristisch und mit deutlichem Kokosnussaroma beschrieben. Ätherisches
Massoiarindenöl löst sich in Alkohol (Ethanol), in Pflanzenölen und anderen ätherischen Ölen. Es ist
nahezu unlöslich in Wasser. Charakteristische Bestandteile von ätherischem Massoiarindenöl sind
Massoialacton (bis 60%) und Benzylbenzoat (Benzoesäurebenzylester, bis 8%).[2,3]
Characterisation
Essential massoia bark oil is a mobile, mostly light yellow to brown coloured liquid. The smell is described as
characteristic with coconut aroma. Essential massoia bark oil is soluble in alcohol (ethanol), in vegetable oils
and other essential oils as well. It is virtually insoluble in water. Characteristic ingredients of essential massoia
bark oil are massoia lactone (up to 60%) and benzyl benzoate (up to 8%).[2,3]
Arzneiliche Verwendung, Phytotherapie
Den Inhaltsstoffen des ätherischen Massoiarindenöls wird eine Reihe von gesundheitlich relevanten
Eigenschaften nachgesagt. Massoiarinde wurde von den Einwohnern Javas und Balis zur Zubereitung
einer wärmenden Einreibung verwendet. Weiterhin wurden Extrakte aus der Massoiarinde zur
Behandlung von Fieber und Durchfallerkrankungen sowie zur Verhinderung von Krämpfen während
der Schwangerschaft und der Entbindung eingesetzt. Für diese traditionellen Anwendungsgebiete
gibt es jedoch keine neueren Studien, so dass diese Erfahrungswerte nicht ohne weiteres auf
ätherisches Massoiarindenöl übertragen werden können.[3]
Medical use, phytotherapy
The compounds of essential massoia bark oil seem to have a number of health-related properties. Massoia bark
was used by the inhabitants of Java and Bali to prepare a warming liniment. Furthermore, extracts from the
massoia bark were used to treat fever and diarrhea and to prevent cramps during pregnancy and childbirth.
There are no recent studies for these traditional areas of application. The experience cannot be transferred to
essential massoia bark oil without further investigation.[3]

Aromatherapie
Ätherisches Massoiarindenöl wird bisher in der Aromatherapie nur sehr selten eingesetzt. Eine
ausreichende Datenlage für eine verlässliche Indikationsaussage ist nicht gegeben.[4]

indication statement is not given.[4]
Anwendung in der Kosmetik
Ätherisches Massoiarindenöl wird in der Herstellung von kosmetischen Produkten relativ selten
verwendet. Die International Fragrance Association (IFRA) empfiehlt, ätherisches Massoiarindenöl bis
auf weiteres nicht in kosmetischen Produkten zu verwenden, da die toxikologische Bewertung der
Inhaltsstoffe nicht abgeschlossen ist.[4]

Essential massoia bark oil is relatively rarely used in the production of cosmetic products. The International
Fragrance Association (IFRA) recommends that essential massoia bark oil may not be used in cosmetic
products, as the toxicological evaluation of the ingredients is not completed. [4]
Verwendung in der Küche
Ätherisches Massoiarindenöl wird im Allgemeinen nicht zur Zubereitung von Speisen und
Getränken verwendet. Industriell wurden das Öl, und insbesondere das darin enthaltene
Massoialacton, als Kokosnussaroma verwendet. Heute weicht man allerdings auf preiswertere,
synthetische Aromen aus.
Use in kitchen
Essential massoia bark oil is not generally used in the preparation of food and beverages. Industrially, the oil
and in particular contained massoia lactone are used as a coconut flavour. Today, however, Industry falls back to
cheaper, synthetic flavours.
Anwendungs- und Warnhinweise, Nebenwirkungen
Einige der Inhaltstoffe von ätherischem Massoiarindenöl sind als gesundheitlich bedenklich
einzustufen. Die toxikologische Bewertung der Inhaltsstoffe ist noch nicht abgeschlossen. Ätherisches
Massoiarindenöl sollte nicht unverdünnt auf die Haut aufgetragen werden, da Hautreizungen
auftreten können. Ätherisches Massoiarindenöl eignet sich nicht für die Anwendung bei
Schwangeren, Säuglingen und Kleinkindern. Beachten Sie auch die Hinweise im Sicherheitsdatenblatt
und der Produktspezifikation.[4]

Application and warning notes, side effects
Some of the compounds of essential massoia bark oil are classified as hazardous to health. The toxicological
evaluation of the ingredients is not yet complete. Essential massoia bark oil should not be used undiluted on
the skin, since skin irritation can occur. Essential massoia bark oil is not recommended for use in pregnant
women, infants and young children. Also note the references in the material safety data sheet and the product
specification.[4]
