History of the model*
When the fascinating car was shown at the 1952 London Motor Show, it was admired by everyone. The
first Austin-Healey 100 (BN1) were built at the BMC plant in Longbridge, whereas the chassis came
from Jensen of West Bromwich. Even at that time the car offered a 3-speed gearbox and an overdrive
for the second and third gear as an option. A slightly tuned Austin-Healey 100 finished at a fabulous 12th
rank at Le Mans 1953.
The MK III / BJ8 was the final version of the Big Healey six-cylinder cars. It was introduced in 1963
and built during the last four years of production. With the help of two SU HD8 carburetors, the threeliter engine offered 150 horsepower. The MKIII was the most luxurious of the Healey-roadsters. The
upgraded interior centred around a completely new facia to complement the winding windows and
convertible hood. A central console linked the transmission tunnel to the walnut-veneered facia, which
now incorporated a lockable glovebox on the passenger side. The new instruments included a 140mph
speedometer. The redesigned seats were trimmed in the then new Ambla leathercloth and had fluted
centre panels. A fold-down squab for the rear seats provided a carpeted luggage platform. There were
Girling disc brakes in the front and drums in the rear. A new dual exhaust system with four silencers
culminated in twin rear tailpipes exiting to the opposite side to the earlier cars. A brake servo was now
standard and there was much improved heat insulation at several critical points. BMC stopped
production of the 3000 in 1967 after eight years and a total of 42.926 cars. During its production-period
the 3000 won a lot of Rallyes and even today it is one of the most successful classic cars at vintage-car
events.
Our car in detail
The MK III / BJ 8 we offer here has a totally original interieur with very nice patina. The dashboard is in
a perfect condition without any cracks and the original radio works very well, too. The dark silver-grey
paintwork fits perfectly to the black leather-trim, the folding top and the marvelous chrome-parts with
60-spoke stainlees/chrome wire wheels. From the technical point of view, the car and its 4-speed with
overdrive gearbox, shows great perfection: Everything works well and the car sounds great. The present
owner, a vintage-car specialist, bought the car in 2009 and has used it for daily business during the week
when the weather was fine or to take part at classic-car events at the weekends. The car comes with
German MOT and tax reduced historic registration.
