Commune pénitentiaire
comme Saint- Jean du Maroni, les
camps forestiers ou encore les Iles
du Salut.
Le 23 août 1857, le commandant
Mélinon implante face à
Albina une colonie agricole
pénitentiaire, baptisée SaintLaurent du Maroni en 1858.
Penal town
Parallèlement à cette
implantation coloniale sur le
territoire guyanais, le bassin du
Maroni est quant à lui un espace
de refuge pour les Noirs Marrons
et les Amérindiens.
L’estuaire est peuplé d’Amérindiens
Kali’na et Lokono. Plus en amont du
fleuve habitent les Noirs Marrons,
populations descendantes d’esclaves
ayant fui les plantations : les
Paramaka, les Ndjuka et les Boni, et
enfin les Amérindiens Wayana, Teko,
Tilio. Avec la ruée vers l’or sur le
Haut-Maroni de 1880-1888, SaintLaurent du Maroni devient une
étape importante dans ce commerce.
Le village colonial se peuple de
commerçants d’origine diverse,
venus des Antilles, et de Chine via le
Surinam.
At the same time as colonial
settlement took place in French
Guiana, the Maroni Basin was the
place where Maroons and Native
Indians took refuge.
The estuary was inhabited by the
Kalina and Lokono Amerindians.
Upstream river was the place
where Maroons used to live. They
were of fugitive slave descent –
Paramaka, Ndjuka, and Boni. As
far as upstream native indians were
concerned, they were Wayana,
Teko and Tilio. With 1880-1888
gold rush on the Upper Maroni,
Saint Laurent du Maroni became
an important place for this trade.
The penal colony changed its
shape from village to town with
the arrival of traders coming from
many different places -from the
caribbean for most of them, and
from China travelling through
Suriname.
It was only at the end of the
Penal colony that Native Indians,
Maroons and former Maroni gold
seekers came to settle in town. It
had become French Guiana sub
prefecture in 1946, just at the same
time as French Guianan prisons
were closed. The city population
also grew with the arrival of far
away migrants – from mainland
France, Suriname, Guyana, Haiti,
Brazil, China or even Laos and
Vietnam with the arrival of the
Hmongs population in Javouhey
in 1979.
Major Melinon settled a farming
penal colony opposite Albina on
August the 23th, 1857. It was
named Saint-Laurent du Maroni
in 1858.
It became a penal town in 1880 –
a unique status in France at that
time. From that time on, about
70 000 transported, banished and
political prisoners from France
and colonial convicts are sent to
prisons in French Guiana.
The Transportation Camp gathers
the Transported of 1st, 2nd and 3rd
class who build and maintain the
City. It is also the starting point
to other camps like Saint-Jean du
Maroni, the forest camps or Iles
du Salut.
Elle devient commune pénitentiaire
en 1880 – un statut alors unique
en France. Dès lors, près de 70.000
transportés, relégués, déportés
métropolitains et condamnés
coloniaux sont envoyés dans les
bagnes de Guyane.
Le Camp de la Transportation
regroupe les transportés de 1ère, 2ème
et 3ème classe qui construisent et
entretiennent la Ville. Il est aussi le
point de départ vers d’autres camps

C’est seulement à la fin du Bagne
que les populations amérindiennes,
marronnes et anciens chercheurs
d’or du Maroni viennent s’installer
dans la ville, devenue souspréfecture du département guyanais
en 1946, date de la fermeture des
bagnes de Guyane. La population
de la ville s’enrichit également de
l’arrivée de migrants d’origine
plus lointaine : de métropole, du
Surinam et du Guyana, d’Haiti, du
Brésil, de Chine ou encore du Laos
et du Vietnam, avec l’arrivée des
Hmongs à Javouhey en 1979.

Le Service Patrimoine coordonne les initiatives Ville d’Art et d’Histoire de SaintLaurent du Maroni au sein de son Centre d’Interprétation de l’Architecture et du
Patrimoine (CIAP) situé au Camp de la Transportation. Il propose toute l’année
des animations pour les Saint-laurentais, le public touristique et le public scolaire.
Des brochures conçues à votre attention pour mieux appréhender la ville sont
disponibles au Service Patrimoine.
The Heritage Service...
The Heritage Service coordinates the “Town of Art and History” initiatives of
Saint-Laurent du Maroni within the Interpretation Centre of Architecture and
Heritage (CIAP) located inside the Transportation Camp. It offers throughout the
year entertainments for the Saint-Laurentais, for tourist public and public school.
Brochures are designed to your attention to better understand the City and are
available at the Heritage Service.

Entre 1852 et 1938, environ 70.000 bagnards sont
envoyés en Guyane. En 1938, un décret loi abolit le
bagne sous l’influence de Gaston Monnerville, alors
député de Guyane. Il faudra attendre la fin de la
2nde Guerre Mondiale pour que les bagnes ferment
définitivement leurs portes.
A Saint-Laurent du Maroni, le Camp de la Transportation
est progressivement abandonné et racheté par un
commerçant du Village, M. Tanon. De 1949 à 1992, les
cases du Camp sont occupées par des créoles et noirsmarrons installés en Ville suite au déclin de l’orpaillage
sur le Haut-Maroni. En 1992, le Camp est racheté par la
commune et classé Monument Historique en 1995. En
lançant des travaux de restauration dans ce lieu chargé
d’histoire et de souffrance, la municipalité et la direction
des affaires culturelles, inversent le symbole en faisant de
ce lieu un lieu dédié à la culture et au patrimoine.
Between 1852 and 1938, about 70 000 convicts are sent
to French Guiana. In 1938, a decree-law abolishes the
Penal Colony under the influence of Gaston Monnerville,
while he was deputy of French Guiana. It was not until
the end of the 2nd World War that the Penal Colony

finally closed its doors.
In Saint-Laurent du Maroni, the Transportation Camp was progressively abandoned and bought by
a merchant of the Village, Mr. Tanon. From 1949 to 1992, the Camp huts were occupied by Creole
and Maroons installed in Town following the decline of gold panning on the Upper Maroni. In 1992,
it was bought by the Town of Saint-Laurent du Maroni and classed as Historic Monument in 1995.
By launching the restoration work in this place full of history and suffering, the municipality and
the direction of cultural affairs, invert the symbol by making this place a place dedicated to culture
and heritage.

after a long loop back downtown at the Transportation Camp.

l La forêt de Saint-Jean / Saint-Jean forest
La forêt de Saint-Jean abrite deux circuits de randonnée de 1,5 km et 8,25 km,
tracés par l’Office National des forêts. Des repères indiquent le layon sur les
arbres, les promeneurs suivent ce sentier à leur rythme à l’abri du soleil.
The forest of Saint-Jean has two hiking trails of 1,5 km and 8,25 km, traced
by the Forestry commission. Benchmarks indicate the transect on the trees,
hikers follow the trail at their own pace away from the sun.
l Les chutes Voltaire / Voltaire waterfalls
Avec un dénivelé de 35 mètres sur une distance de 200 mètres, les chutes
Voltaire sont parmi les plus belles cascades d’eau de Guyane.
Voltaire waterfalls are one of the most beautiful waterfalls of French Guiana
being 35 meters high and 200 meters long.

La Guyane, terre d’Amérique du Sud et département français d’Outre-Mer, est
couvert à 90% par la forêt amazonienne. On recense en Amazonie française plus de
1300 essences de bois précieux, une flore luxuriante, 170 espèces de mammifères et 740
espèces d’oiseaux. L’Ouest de la Guyane n’est pas en reste. Saint-Laurent du Maroni,
située entre fleuve et forêt, est une ville riche par son patrimoine architectural, mais aussi
par son patrimoine naturel. La forêt amazonienne vous plonge dans un océan de verdure
et de sérénité. Le Piauhau hurleur* annonce votre visite au cœur de la jungle. Tendez
l’oreille et laissez vous enchanter par les bruits de la forêt !
Des professionnels vous guideront. L’expérience et les connaissances du guide vous
permettront de mieux découvrir cet environnement et cette faune discrète, mais bien
présente. L’œil et l’oreille aux aguets vous partirez sur les traces du jaguar...
Un certain nombre de précautions sont à prendre avant une excursion en forêt. Elles sont
similaires à celles d’une balade sur le fleuve. Nous vous invitons à les retrouver en page

l La crique Tatou / Tatou creek
Cette crique se situe en bordure de la piste Paul Isnard, pour se rendre aux
chutes Voltaire. Détente, pique-nique, baignade, sont les activités à pratiquer
sur le site.
This creek is to be found on the road to the Voltaire waterfalls, along the lane
called ‘Paul Isnard’. It is a place just to relax, picnic or swim and enjoy this
beautiful spot.

French Guiana, land of South America and Overseas French Department, is
covered by 90% of Rain Forest. More than 1300 species of precious trees, a luxuriant
flora, 170 species of mammals and 740 species of birds can be found in French Amazonia.
The West part of French Guiana is between the river and the forest. Saint-Laurent du
Maroni is therefore a rich town thanks to its architectural heritage but also thanks to its
natural diversity. The Amazon rain forest puts you in a sea of greenery and serenity. The

be enchanted by the sounds of the forest!

help you better discover this environment and its wildlife not often visible, but real. Walk
with your eyes wide open and ears on alert you will go on the trail of the jaguar…
A number of precautions must be taken before an excursion in the forest. They are similar

est proposé par un guide expérimenté de l’ONF.
An observation tour in forest is offered by an experienced guide of the
Forestry Commission every first Sundays of the month.

Sur cette île étaient isolés autrefois les bagnards atteints de la lèpre.
Aujourd’hui, ce site, idéal pour pique-niquer sous un carbet et passer une
journée de farniente, laisse derrière lui cette image de terre d’exil pour
malades. Vous pourrez y accéder en pirogue en contactant les prestataires de la
rubrique Maroni (page 18).

Hamac et moustiquaire, sac étanche, chapeau, bermudas, tee-shirts, shorts,
vêtements chauds pour la nuit (jogging) et chaussettes, maillot et serviettes de
bain, nécessaire de toilette, lampe de poche, chaussures de marche ou tennis,
sandales pour l’eau, imperméable ou poncho, sachets plastique, lotion antimoustique et pharmacie personnelle, lunettes de soleil et produits solaires.
Ces recommandations sont identiques pour les excursions en forêt.
Hammock and mosquito net, waterproof bag, hat, shorts, t-shirts, warm
clothes for the night -such as tracksuit and socks-, swimsuit and bath towels,
toiletries, lamp pocket, walking shoes or sneakers, sandals for water, rain
coat or poncho, plastic bags, anti-mosquito lotions and personal pharmacy,
sunglasses and suncream. These recommendations are the same for excursions
in the forest.

A bord d’une pirogue, lutter contre les courants au passage des sauts sur
le plus grand fleuve de Guyane (520 Km), puis établir son campement au
milieu de la forêt, pêcher dans une crique, dormir dans un hamac sous un
carbet…Aller au bout de ses émotions, ça c’est déjà l’aventure !
Excursions de 2 heures à la demi-journée, longs séjours sur le fleuve Maroni
et Mana ou en forêt, un large choix s’offre à vous. N’hésitez pas à demander

leur patrimoine. Il garantit la compétence des guides-conférenciers
et des animateurs du patrimoine et la qualité de leurs actions.

diversité. Aujourd’hui, un réseau de 163 villes et pays vous offre son
savoir-faire sur toute la France.
