Gubbins House

This house was built at the base of Table Mountain,
surrounded by protected natural parklands on three
sides, with sweeping views down to the city and
harbor below. The site lies alongside a ravine, where
amid the dense vegetation a stream flows in an
uninterrupted path from the mountain parks to the
city below. An excavated courtyard gives access to
the house, ensuring privacy from the street and adjacent neighbors and also protecting its inhabitants
from the strong southern winds. This tranquil space,
complete with a pond and sculptural indigenous
trees, leads to the six-meter-high foyer tower which
articulates the different elements of the house that
continue out from that central focal point.

Dieses Haus am Fuße des Tafelbergs ist an drei
Seiten umgeben von unter Naturschutz stehender
Parklandschaft und bietet einen atemberaubenden
Blick auf die Stadt und den tiefer liegenden Hafen.
Das Grundstück liegt in einer Schlucht von der aus
sich ein Bach mitten durch dichte Vegetation und
gebirgige Landschaft bis in die tiefer gelegene Stadt
schlängelt. Ein ausgehobener Hof führt zum Haus
und bietet Schutz vor der Straße und den angrenzenden Gebäuden sowie den starken Südwinden.
Diese Oase der Ruhe mit Gartenteich und einheimischen, skulptural geformten Baumarten führt zum
6 Meter hohen Foyerturm. Von diesem zentralen
Verteiler werden die übrigen Räume erschlossen.
