From t h e e s t a b l i s h m e n t of t h e Tanganyika T e r r i t o r y G e o l o g i c a l
Survey Department by t h e end of 1 9 2 5 , s y s t e m a t i c a l g e o l o g i c a l
i n v e s t i g a t i o n s were c a r r i e d o u t i n t h e c o u n t r y by t h i s i n s t i t u t i o n and t h e i r r e s u l t s were i s s u e d i n a s e r i e s of government
p u b l i c a t i o n s . Annual R e p o r t s were i s s u e d u n d e r t h e a u t h o r s h i p
of t h e G e o l o g i c a l Survey Department from 1926 t o 1934. I n 1934
t h e Department of Lands and Mines was e s t a b l i s h e d and t h e work
of t h e G e o l o g i c a l Survey was t a k e n o v e r by t h e new G e o l o g i c a l
D i v i s i o n which i s s u e d t h e r e p o r t s from 1935 t o 1949. The Geolog i c a l D i v i s i o n was r e o r g a n i z e d i n 1950 and became t h e Geologic a l Survey Department a g a i n . S i n c e 1951 t h e Annual Report was
d i v i d e d i n t o two s e p a r a t e l y i s s u e d p a r t s

t i v e i n n a t u r e , p t . 2 , e n t i t l e d Records o f t h e G e o l o g i c a l Survey
of Tanganyika c o n t a i n i n g t e c h n i c a l and s c i e n t i f i c m a t e r i a l , was
i s s u e d i n 11 volumes from 1951 t o 1961.
From t h e e s t a b l i s h m e n t of t h e Survey o n , t h e g e o l o g i c a l p u b l i c a t i o n s were i s s u e d a s B u l l e t i n s and S h o r t P a p e r s . From 1942
t h e Survey i s s u e d t y p e s c r i p t - r e p o r t s u n d e r t h e h e a d i n g M i n e r a l
Resources Pamphlets which were d e v o t e d t o t h e g e o l o g y of m i n e r a l
d e p o s i t s . They were i s s u e d i n 66 volumes t i l l 1952. The Survey
a l s o p u b l i s h e d a l i m i t e d s e r i e s of Pamphlets of more g e n e r a l char a c t e r on economic g e o l o g y . A s e r i e s of Memoirs was p r e p a r e d i n
1956.
The S u r v e y - s t a f f p r e p a r e d o v e r t h e y e a r s a g r e a t number of unp u b l i s h e d o p e n - f i l e r e p o r t s on t h e geology of T a n g a n y i k a ' s miner a l d e p o s i t s which a r e n o t i n c l u d e d i n t h e p r e s e n t b i b l i o g r a p h y .
However, comprehensive l i s t s of t h e s e can b e found i n t h e Annual
Reports of t h e Survey.
Regional s u r v e y p a p e r s a r e n o t i n c l u d e d i n t h e p r e s e n t b i b l i o g r a p h y , b u t r e l e v a n t n o t e s and p a r a g r a p h s on t h e economic geology
of s e v e r a l d i s t r i c t s o f T a n z a n i a can b e found i n t h e B u l l e t i n s

The Scandinavian Institute of African Studies in Uppsala was
started in 1962 as an element in the initial Scandinavian
collaboration to collect and disseminate information about Africa
and to promote a scholarly exchange of ideas on topics of central
concern to the developing countries.
The Institute's task is to circulate information about Africa to
public institutions, private organizations and individual inquirers
in the Scandinavian countries. This is done through library and
publication work and through educational activities of various
kinds.
Research activities. Another of the Institute's principal tasks is to
stimulate and support Scandinavian research on Africa. Several
research workers are associated with the lnstitute and travelling
scholarships are distributed annually to forward research in
Africa.
The library. The library specializes mainly in material on modern
Africa. Endeavours are made to stock the current literature on the
social sciences, modern history and modern biography. There are
complete catalogues, both of the Institute's own book stock and
of the stocks of Africana in all the major Scandinavian scientific
libraries.
Seminars and courses. Once a year the lnstitute organizes an
international seminar in which specialists from all over the world
are assembled for lectures and discussions. The seminar
proceedings are published in one of the Institute's publication
series.
The lnstitute also arranges courses for teachers and other
persons dealing with information on Africa. Both Scandinavian
and non-Scandinavian experts are engaged to lecture on Africa
and African problems. In many cases lecture tours are arranged,
covering several of the university towns in Scandinavia.
The Institute does not provide any instruction for those aiming at
academic degrees.
