February 2009
A Word from the
GABC President
Consul General’s
Corner
the intervention of the Bernhard Welschke the Representative of German Industry and
Trade in Washington together
with representatives of a lot of
other countries.
Dear Members and Friends
of the GABC,
I hope you all had a good start
so far into the year 2009, despite
all the bad economical news. The
forecasts still don’t look bright,
but we all have to try and live up
to the challenges and keep our
heads above the water (Oberkante Unterlippe).
The GABC is now a little more
than 20 years old and we went
through good times, bad times
and difficult times, but in all the
years the GABC managed to be
Michael Claus
and remain the forum for business people in South Florida, who
are interested in German-American business relations. It is our promise that we will continue to do our best and remain your business
forum and circle in the years to come.
Our alliance with the German American Chamber of Commerce in
Atlanta and with it the AHK is a fairly new development and a development which all of our members will benefit from.
During a recent meeting with the GACC Atlanta on Board level, we
discussed the first months of our cooperation and the next steps we
will be taking. In the months to come we will have more joint events
with the GACC and you will also have the possibility to gain more
information than ever before, with access to the databases of the
GACC. We will report on this in our next Newsletter.
Since we had so much success with joint events together with other
European Chambers, we continue this fruitful cooperation and will
have another European Cocktail Reception, this time at the Raleigh
Hotel on March 12. Please look out for more information which will
be given in due time.
Enjoy the nice “winter days” in Miami and please continue to support
your GABC. We need you to participate and we will always have an
open ear for any kind of recommendation or critic, positive or negative.
Dear Members and Friends
of the GABC,
the stimulus package and the
foreclosure prevention scheme
have been signed. Let’s hope
they will be a success. The
“Buy American” part of the
stimulus has been softened,
but not completely removed,
so unfortunately elements of
protectionism remain despite
Here in Miami we’ll have the
upcoming SeaTrade – Cruise
Shipping fair with an impressive German participation,
co-financed by the Federal
Ministry of Economics and
Technology. The organisers of
the German booth and myself
will host a reception on March
18. Kristian Wolf from GACC
South in Atlanta will also be
present.
But also have a look at the Consulate General’s cultural calendar. Some interesting events
are scheduled for March.
Best wishes,
Klaus Ranner
New: GACC Corner
On January 12th, 2009 a second annual meeting between the GACC
South (German American Chamber
of Commerce of the Southern US)
and the GABC Miami was held at
the GABC offices. The two organizations review their first year after the
affiliation agreement was signed in
March 2008. The affiliation in Spring
2008 marked a new era for both as
the communication and exchange
of information as well as joint meetings and events was a novum. Both
organizations have already profited
from this relationship and will further strengthen their cooperation
with various planned projects.
Continued on page 6
I look forward to meet you during one of our next events.
Sincerely,
Michael K. Claus
President

German American Business Chamber - Newsletter
Economic survey conducted in January 2009 by the GACC
where members of the GACC and GABC Miami participated:
Guarded Optimism in German American
Business Community
GACC Members expect a tough year for the U.S.
economy; but remain optimistic about their own
companies’ futures
Written by Janka Pieper GACC
In the annual German American business
economic survey conducted by the German
American Chambers of Commerce (GACC)
prior to their Annual Economic Forum 2009
held in Rosemont, IL on January 29th, respondents offered a mixed outlook for 2009. The
majority of respondents expect to see further declines for the U.S. economy in 2009.
Interestingly, when asked about their own
companies’ prospects, 67% of participating
companies expect sales revenues in 2009 either to grow or maintain their current levels,
with only 28% expecting current revenues
to fall. This optimism is indicative that the
majority of respondents feel rather certain
that their companies are strong enough to
weather this storm.
At the Economic Forum, the two presenting financial experts reiterated the GACC
survey respondent’s gloomy outlook for the
U.S. economy in 2009. Senior Managing Director and Chief Economist Diane Swonk of
Mesirow Financial, and Heiko Thieme, Chairman of the American Heritage Management
Corporation also both emphasized the fact
that a stimulus package needed to be passed
by congress as quick as possible to minimize
further damage to the economy: “The longer we wait, the bigger it has to be” said
Diane Swonk.
While both financial experts see the need
for a quick implementation of the stimulus
package, 44% of the survey respondents
were unsure if their companies are going
to benefit from such a package. Ralf Sigrist,
President & CEO of Nordex USA, one of the
executives at the roundtable discussion at
the Economic Forum, expects positive direct
results from the stimulus package for his industry renewable energies, as it is atop of
Obama’s stimulus agenda. The other two
executives at the roundtable discussion, Brad
Haeberle, VP Marketing at Siemens Building
Technologies, and Norbert Weichele, CEO of
Zentis Food Solutions North America, both
expect to indirectly benefit from the stimulus package. Haeberle hopes to benefit from
state supported projects in the construction
industry, while Weichele hopes for a decrease in transportation costs due to infrastructure development.
It was also made clear that while for some
industries the future looks brighter than
for others, access to capital will remain difficult for all borrowers. The majority of the
surveyed companies (63%) expect that ease
of access to capital in 2009 will remain the
same. A quarter of the companies expect
access to capital to become increasingly dif-
ficult, and only 7% think there is a possibility of improvement. Availability of capital
has been a key factor weighing down the
economy; even similar credit opportunities
for 2009 will make borrowing difficult.
In the midst of layoffs and reduced working
hours, GACC and GABC members presented
a somewhat positive outlook for their employment numbers. The majority of the
participating companies (74%) expect their
employment numbers to stay the same or
to increase in 2009. However, respondents’
employment expectations varied depending
on company size or type. 48% of the large
companies (check size) expect a decrease
in employment in 2009, while only 10% of
the small companies (check size) expect this
drop. The majority (69%) expects their employment to stay the same and even 21%
expect an increase in their employment
Overall, the prospects in the German American business community are better than for
the overall U.S. economy, for which a majority of respondents do not expect a turnaround until the end of 2009/beginning
of 2010. Heiko Thieme explained: “We are
bottoming up and it will get better.” Both
Thieme and Swonk are positive that the
U.S. will be the first region to come out of
the recession, closely followed by Europe,
and then Asia. “This is a global problem,
that requires global solutions”, concluded
Diane Swonk.
Advertising opportunities on the GABC website

context, we would like to extend the opportunity to our members
to increase the visibility of their respective business by offering specific benefits or discounts to other GABC members through different GABC outlets such as website and newsletter.

business. Any suggestions are welcome. Please contact us for details
on advertising these offers at our website and through our newsletters as well as other publications.
On a separate note, we are also offering advertising opportunities
at our website for our members at a discounted rate and at a differ-
ent rate for non-members.

of NE 2nd Avenue and NE 39th Street

Georg Baselitz, Gerhard Richter, Peter Beard, Andy Warhol, and David LaChapelle as well as emerging talents, the venue offers a rare
collection of art currently unavailable in the Miami market.
Wolfgang Roth & Partners Fine Art will host events such as artist
talks, tours, and charitable auctions. In addition, Wolfgang Roth will
lead a new lecture series at the gallery on the art of art investing
commencing in January of 2009. An art advisor for over thirty years,
Roth founded TheArtFund, the only publicly traded art investment
fund, which demonstrates the value of art as a high-turnover commodity. Roth will focus on themes on art collecting, the art market
and investing during an economic recession.
The art scene in Miami is newly vibrant and full of promise; however, historically it has been rather narrowly focused. Miami has the
natural ability to attract people from all over the world and to grab
their attention socially. With respect to art, Wolfgang Roth & Partners, Fine Art opened as an attempt to offer a broader perspective
to the Miami arts community through unique exhibitions which invite deeper thought about contemporary art - Wolfgang Roth.
About the Gallery
With the majority of their expertise culled in European cities renowned for their cultural and artistic influences, such as Berlin, Cologne, and Zurich, and over sixty years cumulative experience trading on the global art market, Wolfgang Roth and his partner Reiner
Opoku maintain that a gallery’s focus should encompass more than
just revenue. By combining their resources they have embraced the
edifying potential of Miami’s culturally thriving art scene.
The gallery will serve as a vehicle to establish world-class exhibitions and is committed to positive community engagement and
social contributions. With six openings per calendar year featuring

Renata Pfuner, Principal of Pfuner Design, a contemporary Interior Design Studio in
Miami, has successfully passed the required examination to practice as a LEED AP.
The LEED AP abbreviation stands for Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design
Accredited Professional and affirms the person’s knowledge and ability to apply the
latest energy efficiency and environmental technologies to building projects. The
certification is awarded by the US Green Building Council (USGBC), which is becoming
the internationally recognized standard in the certification of energy efficient and
environmentally sound buildings. South Florida currently has a handful of LEED
certified buildings and more are planned.
Renata Pfuner has chosen to be certified under the LEED New Building category,
which is the most comprehensive of the available paths to LEED accreditation and has
the widest possibility of application. Renata Pfuner as a LEED AP and Pfuner Design as
a USGBC Member company affirm their ongoing commitment to create sustainable
interior designs for residential and boutique commercial projects in South Florida.
“Nowadays, the use of innovative materials makes it easier to combine visual
appealing designs and environmentally conscious living. We want to meet the growing
demand for sustainability with forward thinking design practices. Improving the indoor
air quality, and maximizing the use of natural light throughout spaces are only two
examples of how to enhance the quality of life and how to act responsibly for the sake
of our environment.”, says Renata Pfuner.
Pfuner Design is a full service interior design studio located in the creative heart of
Miami, on NW 36th Street, between the Design District and the Wynwood Art District.

Concerts from vocaldente are something special:
This group presents popular music from the past 8 decades in a classical way called a cappella art. They
care for an art which is nearly lost: a cappella without microphones, the vocal experience without technical
implements, unplugged, straight and direct, pure and authentic. You'll witness five voices building perfect
harmony, from the counter tenor to the bass, as well as vocal imitations of rhythm and musical instruments,
embedded in their own lush arrangements; all spiced up with hilariously funny and witty interludes, and
performed with sweeping choreographies.
