Herr Brauer, Sie waren ja einer der
„Macher“ des EBC-Hop-Symposiums.
Haben Sie mit einem solchen Zuspruch
gerechnet? Wie zufrieden sind Sie mit
dem Verlauf?
Ich würde untertreiben, wenn ich sagte, ich
sei nur zufrieden. Meiner Ansicht nach war
die ganze Veranstaltung in wissenschaftlicher wie kommunikativer Sicht gleichermaßen ausgewogen. Das Vortragsprogramm basierte auf hoch-qualitativen
Beiträgen, die ich mit Dr. Martin Biendl vor allem danach
ausgewählt hatte, dass alle Themenfelder entsprechend
abgebildet waren. Mehr als ein Drittel der eingereichten
Referate mussten wir leider zurückweisen, was nichts über
die Qualität aussagte, sondern allein sicherstellen sollte,
dass neben dem dichten Vortragsprogramm noch Zeit für
Diskussion und Austausch verblieb. Und ich möchte hinzufügen, dass wir völlig überwältigt waren von der überraschend hohen Zahl an Anmeldungen. Üblicherweise haben
wir bei EBC-Symposien zwischen 60 und 80 Teilnehmer,
diesmal hatten wir unglaubliche 135.
Das Thema „Hopfen“ scheint bei immer mehr Brauereien
eine gewichtigere Rolle zu spielen? Können Sie das aus
Ihrer Arbeit bestätigen? Welche Bedeutung messen Sie
dem Thema künftig bei?
Interessant ist, dass ich vor genau 20 Jahren, als ich meine
Berufslaufbahn startete, ausschließlich mit Hopfen zu tun
hatte. Und zwar am Kap in Südafrika, als die Hopfenfarmer
für ihren frischen Hopfen nach Alphasäuregehalt und Trockengewicht bezahlt wurden. Es war meine Aufgabe dies
abzuwickeln, was nur möglich war mit vielen Extra-Schichten im Labor. Ich habe viele schöne Erinnerungen an diese
Zeit und seitdem eine Schwäche für alles, was mit Hopfen
zu tun hat. Als wichtiger Inhaltsstoff sollte Hopfen eigentlich eine Hauptrolle in der Brauszene spielen. Dies hat auch
- nicht nur meiner Meinung nach - der große Zuspruch für
das Hopfen-Symposium gezeigt. Bei der Auswertung der
Teilnehmerbefragung habe ich mehrmals den Kommentar
gelesen, dass es nicht weitere 16 Jahre dauern darf, bis die
EBC das nächste Hopfen-Symposium ausrichtet.
Sie veranstalten kommendes Jahr vom 22. - 26. Mai den
EBC Congress in Glasgow (Schottland). Das dürfte die
wohl größte Veranstaltung der Branche in Europa werden?
Natürlich. Unser EBC-Kongreß 2011 im Glasgower Scottish
Exhibition and Conference Centre (SECC) wird eine richtig
große Veranstaltung. Dass der Kongreß einen festen Platz
im Terminkalender der gesamten Brauwelt findet, liegt
daran, dass wir Brauereien, Wissenschaften und Zulieferin18

Mr. Brauer, you were one of the brains
behind the EBC Hop Symposium. Had
you expected so much interest? Are you
satisfied with the result?
To say that I'm satisfied with the outcome of
the EBC hop symposium would be a mild
understatement. For me, the whole event
rested decisively on striking the right balance between the scientific programme component and the social side of the symposium. The programme relied on getting high
quality scientific and technical submissions and, together with Dr. Martin Biendl, we strove hard to make sure that the selection would reflect
the different sessions and areas of interest. That also meant that a third of
the submissions had to be rejected. Not on the grounds of quality, it
needs to be said, but simply to make sure that the programme was not
too full, thereby allowing ample time for reflection and exchange. I
would also like to add that we were most definitely overwhelmed and
positively surprised by the number of registrations. An EBC symposium would typically have around 60 to 80 participants. Here we had
over 135, an unprecedented number.
The subject of hops seems to play an ever more important role for
an increasing number of breweries. Have you observed the same?
How important do you consider the subject to be?
What is quite interesting is that exactly 20 years ago when I started my
career in brewing I was involved exclusively with hops. During the
annual hop harvest and processing on the Cape south coast in South
Africa, the hop farmers were bringing in fresh hops and then they were
being paid on the basis of alpha and dry-weight. Not too difficult to
organise, except that the lab was having to run extra shifts which I was
responsible for. I still have fond memories of my deployment there and
that's why I have a personal weakness for all things to do with hops. As
a vital ingredient in the beer making process, hops should occupy a central role in the brewing sector. That I'm not in a minority with my opinion was ably demonstrated by the success of the hop symposium and I
saw quite a number of comments on the feedback forms requesting that
we should not have to wait another 16 years until another EBC hop
symposium is held.
Next year, you will hold the EBC Congress in Glasgow, Scotland
from May 22 to 26. It is going to be the largest industry event in
Europe. Will hops play a role at this event? How can people sign
up for the congress?
Indeed. Our big event next year will be the 2011 congress in Glasgow at
the Scottish Exhibition and Conference Centre (SECC). Key to the success of congress is the "tripartite alliance" of breweries, the academic fraternity and the industry suppliers that should all be marking this congress as an important event in their calendar. You may even say that from a science and technology of brewing point of view - the EBC congress is probably the best-known globally. We at EBC are very pleased
that the 2009 congress in Hamburg was such a success after the con-

gress had lost a bit of lustre and focus in 2007 in Venice. But, success
does not come easy and has to be worked for, as is well known. Specifically, this means that we are engaging with the suppliers even more, to find
out their preferences and suggestions for a better exhibition and a clearly
defined interface between brewing research in theory and in practice. As
in 2009, we are working together with Interplan to set new standards of
service and customer satisfaction in Glasgow. For more information and

European Beer Star
München/Gräfelfing – Biere aus aller Welt stellten sich dem
fachmännischen Urteil internationaler Bier-Experten. Dabei
wurde der Rekord aus dem bereits sehr erfolgreichen Vorjahr noch einmal deutlich übertroffen! Der European Beer
Star 2010, der dieses Jahr zum siebten Mal stattfand, richtet
sich an Brauereien aus aller Welt, die sich der traditionellen,
europäischen Brauart verpflichtet fühlen. Ausgezeichnet
werden besonders authentische, charaktervolle Biere, die
geschmacklich und qualitativ überzeugen und die Sortenkriterien am besten erfüllen. Der European
Beer Star wurde 2004 vom Verband Private
Brauereien Deutschland und dem Verband
Private Brauereien Bayern in Kooperation mit der Association of Small and
Independent Breweries in Europe ins
Leben gerufen. Ziel ist, die einzigartige Vielfalt der Biere der Welt zu präsentieren und zu würdigen. Neben
Deutschland beteiligten sich 33 weitere Länder aus allen Kontinenten am
European Beer Star 2010. Die Verkostung der Biere durch eine international
besetzte Jury fand im Oktober in der Brauakademie Doemens in Gräfelfing bei München
statt. In 45 verschiedenen Bier-Kategorien wurde je
eine Gold-, Silber- und Bronze-Medaille verliehen. Die Sieger werden im Rahmen der Preisverleihung auf der Brau
Beviale 2010 am 11. November in Nürnberg bekannt gegeben. Bereits einen Tag zuvor können die Messebesucher aus
allen Goldmedaillengewinnern ihr Lieblingsbier küren: den
Consumers’ Favourite in Gold, Silber und Bronze.

REKORDBETEILIGUNG beim
München/Gräfelfing – Beers from the world over were submitted
for professional assessment by international beer experts. The participation reached record levels, exceeding even the extremely successful prior year! The European Beer Star 2010, held for the seventh
time this year, addresses breweries around the globe that are committed to the traditional European art of brewing. Awards are handed
out for authentic, distinctive beers of an impressive taste and quality
that fulfill the criteria of the particular type in the best way possible. The European Beer Star was initiated in 2004 by the
Association of Private Breweries in Germany and
the Association of Private Breweries in Bavaria
in cooperation with the Association of Small
and Independent Breweries in Europe. The
objective is to honor the unique diversity of
beers and to present them to the world.
Apart from Germany, 33 other countries
from all continents participated in the
European Beer Star 2010.
The beer sampling by an international
jury took place in October at the Doemens
Brewing Academy in Gräfelfing near Munich.
Gold, silver, and bronze medals were awarded in
45 different beer categories.
The winners will be announced within the scope of the
award ceremony at the Brau Beviale 2010 on November 11 in
Nuremberg. The day before, visitors can chose their favorite beer
from among all gold medal winners: the Consumers' Favorite in
gold, silver, and bronze.
