UEFA EUROPA LEAGUE | Season 2011/12
National Arena, Bucharest
The new, 55,200-capacity National Arena
has been built on the site of the former
National Stadium. Based on a similar
design to the stadium in Frankfurt, it
features a retractable roof that can be
opened or closed in 15 minutes.
The arena's predecessor closed its doors
in November 2007 with a 6-1 victory for
Romania against Albania in a UEFA EURO
2008 qualification match. The stadium
hosted national team games and domestic cup finals, as well as being home to FC Steaua
Bucureşti and FC Dinamo Bucureşti.
Construction on the new stadium began in February 2008, with the opening game a UEFA
EURO 2012 qualifier between Romania and France on 6 September 2011, followed by the
start of Romanian champions FC Oţelul Galaţi’s UEFA Champions League campaign.
