NEWSLETTER OF THE RENSSELAER COUNTY REGIONAL CHAMBER OF COMMERCE
The Chamber’s EDP:
Economic Growth Worth Investing In
T
he mission of the Chamber’s Economic Development Partnership (EDP) is to develop,
support, and sustain the long-term economic
vitality of Rensselaer County, and to establish a
greater awareness of the quality of life enjoyed in the
region we call home. The EDP’s goal is to encourage
businesses to grow and locate in Rensselaer County
by providing resources, contacts, and
assistance through high-impact marketing initiatives to attract regional,
national, and international attention.
Established in 2008 as the economic
development department of the Chamber, the EDP
is successfully fulfilling its role in collaboration with
private and government entities.
How successful is the EDP?
» Since its inception, the EDP has responded to
more than 800 inquiries from businesses in a variety
of industries, representing more than 8,600 local
jobs. This year, the EDP is already on track to
provide services to more businesses than the
previous two years combined.
recruitment for its Congress & Ferry Street project that
is bringing student housing, retail, and jobs to Troy.
There’s also Next Advance, Inc., a laboratory equipment
manufacturer that needed commercial space and global
contacts to take their business to the next level. All of
these businesses have located and expanded in Rensselaer County, adding to the area’s economic vitality.
What else does the EDP do?
We assist in the success of grand
openings and ribbon cuttings, offer
education and training, provide
advocacy, conduct business retention
visits, produce an informative newsletter and website at
www.renscochamber-edp.com, and maintain a Business Resource Center that includes conference space at
no charge. The EDP does all of this and much more,
thanks to more than $80,000 invested annually by our
partners. Principal Partners are: Center for Economic Growth (CEG); Rensselaer County; National
Grid; Rifenburg Construction, Inc.; and The Troy
Redevelopment Foundation. Lead Investors are: BBL
Construction Services; HSBC Bank; Nigro Compa-
» Services provided to businesses include
start-up information, funding opportunities, site
location, demographics, business plan assistance,
referrals to service providers, and more. This
assistance results in tangible jobs, new business,
and economic growth that benefits the entire
Rensselaer County community.
Chart I (above) shows the
number of businesses served by
the EDP since its
inception. Chart II (at right)
details the types of inquiries,
which include a range of issues,
such as entrepreneurial/start-up
resources, funding, site location,

Northeast Parent & Child Society has a 123year record of keeping children safe through
residential, foster care, and family therapeutic programs. With the opening of its new Career Center,
Northeast continues to provide support to these
children as they grow into young adults and seek
to make their own way in the world. The Career
Center assists individuals to find secure, rewarding,
stable careers that will allow them to build a promising future for themselves.
The Career Center grew out of the success of
Northeast’s YouthBuild Schenectady program,
which has helped hundreds of young adults complete their high school education, learn construction skills, and build affordable
housing since the program began in 2006. Buoyed by that success, Northeast has
built a $1.5 million Career Center to provide free, comprehensive career services
to all Schenectady County young adults who meet income guidelines. In addition to educational assistance, career guidance, and innovative career tracks in
green energy and construction, Northeast partners with local, regional, and national businesses and corporations to develop specialized employment programs.

MEMBER BENEFIT
Save Money on Long Term Care Insurance
Much has happened in the Long Term Care Insurance industry since the first policies were introduced almost two decades ago. Many insurance companies have come
and gone, some forced to apply to the state for huge rate increases in order to stay
solvent. Of the many companies previously offering the NYS Partnership Program,
only four remain, including New York Life Insurance Company. As a Chamber
member, you, your employees, and family members can purchase LTC coverage at a
significant discount through Thomas K. Judd & Associates. Throughout the years,
insurers have redesigned their policies by adding riders, supplemental benefits, and
other features that make owning a policy much more affordable. The state continues to allow a 20% tax credit applicable to residents of New York who own partnership policies. If you’re deciding between an LTC policy or creating a Medicaid
Trust, know this: legislation currently being proposed would in effect eliminate the
current “look back” period for sheltering assets, a serious blow to estate planning.
The advantages of owning Long-Term Care Insurance more than outweigh the cost.
With nursing home care rising close to $100,000 annually in the Northeast region,
every family should investigate the merits of adding LTC coverage to their overall
financial plan. For more information contact the Chamber’s LTC Administrator
Thomas K Judd & Associates at 518.220.4247.
“We work hand in hand with companies to develop training programs so that
workers are job-ready,” said Northeast’s Chief Operating Officer Hector Ramirez.
“There are so many companies out there with a serious need for workers with
specific technical training. We are here to meet that need.”
Career Services graduates are building successful careers with companies such
as Xerox Managed Services, Mohawk Ambulance, GE Energy, and SEFCU.
Northeast is always seeking more business partners. “Our students can and
will lead the workforce of tomorrow,” said Mr. Ramirez. “They’re ready for the
chance to impress the business community.”
For information, contact Northeast’s Director of Job Placement Services David
Taylor at 518.372.4100, ext. 2802, or at [email protected].
